I think SA's missed opportunity in the inaugural match was huge. Not sure if they were influenced by ENgland vs Pakistan series. If they had batted first their fortunes would have been different.

Sarfaraz deciding to bowl first vs India.

Quite a few teams opted to bowl first when batting first could've been better.

Afghanistan chose to bowl first against BD and it backfired.

South Africa did the same against England.

Pakistan did the same against India.

BD did the same against England.

I know chasing has become easier but batting first on a good track is still the right thing to do.

I think pakistan ended up where they did due to two very critical and terrible toss decisions. Against Australia and India. They chose to chase in both cases when all the teams were wise to bat first.

Still don’t understand the logic behind it.

You know you’re strength is bowling.

So why would you back yourself to chase against two of the top three batting sides in the world?

It’s mind boggling.. my best guess is it was a number of small contributing factors.

1. Failure to defend 300 plus totals against England before the tournament.. but that should not have been a major issue because our bowling lineup had totally changed. Plus scoreboard pressure in the World Cup is totally different from a bilateral series.

2. They didn’t want to set a target for the likes of India and Australia because they are good chasers.

3. They thought first innings conditions would be consistent with their first game against WI when the ball did all sorts of things..

Bottom line is those two toss decisions were a total pooch screw because those were ideal batting conditions and all the teams were racking up big totals batting first.. a total miscalculation and misreading of the situation by our think tank.

Batting first has been a massive advantage this World Cup as it has been in almost all World Cups. Morgan putting Pakistan in also cost them the match imo.

Nothing beats Sarfraz choosing to bowl vs India as we simply can’t chase. This has to be one of the most idiotic decisions.

Sarfaraz chasing vs India
Gulbadin choosing to chase vs Afghanistan
BD fielding first against England

Harsh to criticise SA for fielding against England, that was the start of tournament and obviously the bat first trend wasn't clear.
