Roman Reigns gives up title due to leukaemia

WWE star Roman Reigns is giving up his Universal Championship title because he has leukaemia.

The four-time world champion told fans on Monday he had been diagnosed with the disease 11 years ago but was in remission.

But he says the leukaemia has returned which means he can no longer "be that fighting champion".

WWE Universal champion Roman Reigns confirms leukaemia

WWE Universal champion Roman Reigns has confirmed he has leukaemia and has vacated the title.

Reigns, real name Joe Anoa'i, made the announcement live on Raw on Monday night that the condition he had 11 years ago has returned and as a result, he will relinquish WWE's top singles title.

The 33-year-old made it clear he was not delivering a retirement speech but that he could no longer be a "fighting champion".

‘Courage - strength in the face of pain or grief.’ You have given us your everything including a courageously vulnerable moment. We, your WWE family, give you all of our love and support. #ThankYouRoman #NeverGiveUp

"When I come back it's not going to be about titles and being on top it's going to be about a purpose," he said. "I'm coming back because I want to show the whole world, my family, my friends, my children and my wife that when life throws a curveball at me I will stand in that batter's box and swing for the fences every single time.

"Because I will beat this and I will be back, and you will see me very, very soon."

Reigns' Shield partners Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins embraced him on the entrance ramp after his speech and emotional tributes continues on social media.

Finn Balor wrote: His real name is Joe & he's a stand up guy! Inside the ring one of the best I've battled with. Outside the ring one of the most genuine people I have ever met & learned from. See you soon good brother ( ..and he smells great)."

Daniel Bryan summed up the mood among Reigns' fellow wrestlers by saying: "I've never seen the air sucked out of a locker room like it was tonight. Our thoughts and prayers are with Roman and his family."

SmackDown women's champion Becky Lynch said: "You are the definition of what it means to be a leader and a champion and one of the toughest lads on the planet. We are all behind you and sending love. You will beat this."

Awful, awful news. I was absolutely shocked to read about it. :(

Let's hope he recovers and returns to action soon.

OMG just learned that about Roman’s cancer and i’m in tears! :((( I absloutley loved roman he was my fav wredtler along with AJ. What are the chances of him beating Leukaemia and coming back?

I was watching his announcement live. I was surprised to see that he came into the ring in his casual gear and chain. And then he started talking, at first I couldn’t quite understand where he was heading with his talk, and then he said ‘my real name is Joe’. I still thought this was going to turn out to be a shoot interview or something on another wrestler. But then he said I have had Leukaemia for 11 years and now it’s back. My heart just sank at hearing this. The first time I’ve actually witnessed pin-drop silence for a brief moment on a live WWE show. So, so sad.

If I’m correct, Roman’s bigger brother has recently passed away! I really pray for this family. You can tell these are genuinely good guys/boys that have been raised well and love their families and profession.

I found out this morning didn’t watch raw last night, and I am was in shock. Do not think I’ll be able to watch WWE for a while.

Really sad news. Also knew that Shield is going to break on the same night. And it happened with Dean Ambrose becoming a heel again.

Not a fan, but have immense respect for him it's inspirational how he has dealt with all the setbacks and obstacles he's had in life.

Not sure off the numbers, but I read if everything goes well he could be back for Survivor Series 2019 or RR 2020. But again, we don't know much about it so it could be shorter or longer.

Absolute distraught at this new. I hope he can recover asap. Should take as long as he needs off. The hate for him is OTT. He is much improved , just over booked to be too strong but that isn't his fault.

You can tell by watching the vidoes on WWE YouTube channel how much he is respected by the locker room.

Horrible horrible news. He is so young and at the peak of his career. I hope he recovers from it and leads a long and healthy life.

Good decision to give up the title to concentrate on his health. I don't watch the WWE anymore nonetheless good luck to him. Wishing him a speedy recovery.

Cancer treatment has really advanced these days. His prognosis all depends on how advanced it is and what time of leukemia he has. The fact that he relapsed automatically gives him a poorer prognosis. Hopefully it hasn't advanced too far and that he bounces back with a few cycles of chemo. He'll probably be out for a year or so though juts to fully recover.

Devastating news, it was the saddest segment I have ever watched since Owen, Eddie and Benoit's deaths being reported on live TV. Not going to lie I did shed a few tears, not many people can relate to the connection we have with the product; had a really bad feeling in my stomach when this news was reported and that promo was just so hard to sit through.

I share the same views as Hasan123, we've been among a few who have defended the character; during his initial push was not a fan but with time he got better and better, the toughness he showed so young in his career to bounce back from hostile reception to a premature push are a testament to his elite talent, that immediately resonated with me; his work in the ring became much much better and his delivery on the mic also improved, soon after became one of the best all round performers having tremendous matches with the likes of AJ Styles and even elevating new comers like Braun Strowman. Not everyone has to be a high flyer to be seen as a good wrestler, the art has many forms and Reigns is P4P the best brawler in the world. Unlike in Japan, in the WWE you're not always working with the most skilled performers on the roster constantly, you need to excel against a variety of opponents in many match situations, not to mention endure a gruelling schedule and sell tickets at house shows all around the world, in this regard a small number of folk can truly compete with his all round performance.

It's a damn shame, right at the peak of his powers this has been a huge set back. He had been battling this privately for 11 years and now it has returned again, to have reached so far with these issues he has been having is nothing short of inspirational. People shouldn't pay attention to what smark dweebs have to say and look at the respect he commands in that locker room to see where he stands in the industry. I hope he can maintain this fighting spirit and return once again at the highest level.

I have always respected him as a competitor and always thought he would do well. It's a shame what has happened. I hope he can come through. Respect for him trying to keep it to himself. Not easy thing to go through.

He will be back.

11 years. Respect. Although I haven't watched any WWE (was WWF back then) since Owen Hart died.

Same here, you can never bet against a samoan doing well in the business. The usos are also very under rated. Those types of things you're meant to share with people I can't imagine it have been easy keeping it away from people he was very close to, I think only his family and maybe one or 2 other people knew about this. God willing he can make a triumphant return.
