I was going through this and I got a record of the historical year-end ranking of top players in ODIs.
Felt sharing this.

Below are the players who were number 1 ICC ranked by the end of the year:

2018: - Virat Kohli
2017: - Virat Kohli
2016: - AB de Villiers
2015: - AB de Villiers
2014: - AB de Villiers
2013: - AB de Villiers
2012: - Hashim Amla
2011: - Hashim Amla
2010: - Hashim Amla
2009: - MS Dhoni
2008: - MS Dhoni
2007: - Ricky Ponting
2006: - Mike Hussey
2005: - Ricky Ponting
2004: - Adam Gilchrist
2003: - Sachin Tendulkar
2002: - Michael Bevan
2001: - Michael Bevan
2000: - Michael Bevan
1999: - Michael Bevan
1998: - Sachin Tendulkar
1993- 1997: - Brian Lara

Discuss!

Tendulkar was quite clearly and by far the best in the world in all formats from 1994 to 2003 i.e., some 9-10 years of absolute and complete domination in all formats and tournaments. Basically from when he started opening in ODIs in 1994.

Similarly 2003-2007 belonged to Ponting. I see Hussey and Gilchrist there but everyone recalls that time period as Ponting's reign as the best in the world.

In simple terms and without needless statistics :-

1990-1993 - Dean Jones/Azharuddin
1994--2002 - Tendulkar
2003-2006 - Ponting
2007-2010 - Dhoni
2011-2012 - ABD/Dhoni
2012-2014 - Dhoni/Kohli/ABD
2015 ------- ABD
2016-2018 - Kohli

Special mentions to Lara (mid 90s), Bevan(late 90s), Amla (late 2000s/early 2010s), Sharma (late 2010s) who had terrific years as well shadowed by players above havign even more phenomenal streaks.

Players from only 3 countries for last 20+ years! India, SA, and Australia are in a league of their own.

ABD is still better ODI bat than Kohli imo. 100+ SR at 53+ average is unreal. Kohli must do better in WC to surpass ABD, who was a champion in WC despite his teammates choking.

Kohli's averaging 90+ in current form. He's surpassed all previous streaks in terms of numbers.

ABD definitely is more exciting as a batsman but Kohli towers over him in delivering when the backs are against the wall.

AB's SR is also deceptive. He and Gayle often go into a shell and playout an embarrassing 70 SR knock when put under pressure.

Doesn't mean those players were best throughout those years. They were at the #1 rank at the end of those years.

Then it would make sense for austrialian and South African players to be at top so consistently because their home seasons begin near the end of the year in nov/dec.

Guess its simply top averaging batsmen during those years. That explains Amla and Bevan scooping quite a few years in there.

Batsmen only?

Spot on analysis.

Cricket is unlike some of the other sports (F1, tennis, badminton, athletics etc) which have a consistent year long season finishing in November-December. In cricket depending on country the season finishes differently. Example India hardly plays in the March-July period (IPL, scorching summer, monsoon) except in years featuring England tours. Same with Pakistan but England has a dedicated home window in summer. So a September or April ranking gives us as much insight in cricket as the year end ranking.

I would prefer a stat which can capture the adjusted annual ranking which is the average of all 12 month end rankings, but again some modifications will have to be made which statisticians can figure out.
