From Sarfraz Ahmed's presser today:
"It's a big opportunity for me that I've received an offer to play for a county and hopefully it will be a good experience. People have always given positive feedback previously and God-willing if I go there soon, I will learn a lot and I will also pass on to the knowledge to the other players here."

It appears he will be joining a county (which one is not confirmed yet) for T20s soon.

Imad recently joined up also, good to see Pakistani players getting involved.

This is what u get when u win the major ICC tournament. :)

hope Fakhar, Shadab also get in some county expierience.

Don't think Shadab has played enough international games to be able to be signed as an overseas player in county cricket yet.

Hes signed for yorkshire. Its on twitter

Johnny Bairstow the 1st choice keeper is unavailable for most of the season and the backup keeper isn't good enough to be representing Yorkshire.

I hope he plays some first class matches and not just t20's. Would be good for both sides.

Ah, if only Sarfraz had joined earlier so he could play for Yorkshire tomorrow against Junaid Khan's Lancashire. Oh well, still will be a good experience for him. Why is it such a short stint? Why can't he play longer , Pakistan have no commitments, can't he hop on the next plane and play for the whole tournament?

With Pak players free of any international comittments, surprising that players like Hassan Ali and Fakhar haven't been snapped up by the counties.

Brilliant news. Hopefully a couple of others get offers too.

He seems to be filling in for Peter Handscomb hence it only being a short stint until Handscomb returns, although I'm not sure where Handscomb is going.

I believe Fakhar Zaman has the same issue as Shadab Khan in not having played enough international cricket to play county cricket yet.

These guys have such a long break with the PCB, I'm sure it's gets boring

There's only so much time you can spend with family. At some point you want to start doing what you love

YES !

Pakistan's tournament winning captain will come to God's Own Country.

Big Mac and shaz619 will be having some stomach bugs at this news :))

Not the best signing from a player perspective. Far better t20 keepers going around

However great he will get this experience

These counties plan well in advance esp with just 2 internationals allowed meaning that spots for internationals are not that open

Only when an unexpected spot of an int'l opens up can they sign up

Yorkshire in full blown panic mode trying to catch the mighty Birmingham Bears.

He was prolific in the Pak is Eng series and that's why he's been selected. That's what mostly happens. Sharjeel did good, made it to the team. Amir did good, got a team. Sarfraz did good, got an offer. Imad did good, he's playing. So all players who were good made it

Would like to have seen him play some 1st class games as they would have helped him improve his batting and fitness. But nonetheless happy to see Sarfraz play county cricket.

lol don't be envious he is No.1 or No.1 keeper in the world.. you gotta be kidding.. the two time icc cup winning captain.. i guess you should watch cricket pretty soon..:sarf

Really?? How many are better ?

2 or 3 maybe are better? De cock. Bairstow is similar to Siffy.

But not too many better. So even if you are in the top 10 keeper batsmen, there are many opportunities available.

Siffy is in top 3.

Sarfraz signs for Yorkshire in 20/20 blast.

Pleased for him.

Throughly deserved

Not played enough international games to have a county contract yet.

quality over quantity. I'm sure scoring a century in the final of the Champions Trophy against your arch rivals will make people stand up and take notice

Not to mention the fact the tournament in which he scored that century (as well as his 2 fifties) was in England. It shows he is a proven performer in English conditions, which would make him attractive to any county side.

No I mean he quite literally hasn't played enough international games to be valid for a county to sign him.

Just out of curiosity, how many games does that amount to? I tried finding the regulations for the NatWest T20 but couldn't.

Believe for someone who hasn't played tests the qualification is 15 ODIs/t20is in the last 2 years or something like that. Can't remember the other combinations/the periods off the top of my head.

Seems bizarre considering Sarfraz is not even a great T20 player...

MARTYN Moxon admits Yorkshire are caught between an overseas rock and a hard place with regards to Peter Handscomb's availability and sourcing a potential replacement.

The contractual dispute threatening the short-term future of Australian cricket is having a knock-on effect on the white-rose county.

Handscomb has been selected in Australia's squad for their two-Test tour of Bangladesh late next month and into September, but that tour is not certain to go ahead given all of Australia's top stars and more besides are unemployed having not accepted Cricket Australia's terms of contract.

It is a row which has even put the Ashes in jeopardy later this year.

As for Yorkshire, they have been left scratching their heads with regards to filling the spot which Handscomb currently has for the second half of theNatWest T20 Blast.

Handscomb is scheduled to leave after Sunday's Blast clash with Notts at Trent Bridge ahead of a training camp back in Australia.

Do Yorkshire bide their time and hope Handscomb stays or do they move to release the Aussie and bring in a replacement, understood to be Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed, who would play in T20 cricket only?

The latter option would seem to be the only way Yorkshire could guarantee definitely having two overseas players at their disposal.

Shaun Marsh would take Handscomb's place in the Championship if needed.

Whatever happens, we should know this week.

"Pete's desperately trying to find out what's happening, and at some point soon, over the next few days, we are going to have to make a decision as to what we are going to do," said Moxon, Yorkshire's director of cricket.

"Pete's due to be leaving us after next Sunday. Over the next couple of days, it's going to have to come to a head.

"Given his situation, it's particularly frustrating for us.

"I'm not aware that there's any other player in the tour party that it affects like this.

"It's certainly not ideal for Cricket Australia to be in this situation either.

"We could do with knowing one way or the other.

"If Pete goes to Bangladesh, Shaun will take over the four-day duties until the end of the season, but our problem and Pete's problem is that he's due to leave after next Sunday's game.

"The idea is that he has some time at home before he has to go to the training camp.

"If we are going to bring somebody in, we've got to do it next week. We're running out of time."

Sarfraz joins Vikings, Handscomb to depart for Australia duty

The Yorkshire County Cricket Club can confirm that Sarfraz Ahmed has signed a short-term deal with the Club, as a replacement overseas signing for the outgoing Peter Handscomb.

Handscomb is due to depart the UK after the Vikings’ trip to Trent Bridge on Sunday July 30 and will head home for a scheduled week-long training camp in Darwin ahead of Australia’s tour of Bangladesh. Sarfraz is due to arrive in the UK before the end of the month, subject to obtaining a visa. It is anticipated he will play the final five qualifying NatWest T20 Blast fixtures, as well as any potential involvement in the knockout stages of the compeititon.

On Handscomb’s departure, the Club’s Director of Cricket Martyn Moxon said: “The Bangladesh tour was planned so it’s something we always knew could happen, but Pete has settled really well and we have got to deal with these international calls. We’re used to that and we have to manage it. Obviously there has been some trouble between the Australian players and their board, which has made things slightly more difficult for us and for Pete himself, but that’s unavoidable. We hope Pete continues his fine form but doesn’t get too many against England in the winter. He’s a fine young player and I’m sure will go on to great things.”

The Club have moved swiftly to fill the void left by Handscomb and have added the Pakistani wicketkeeper-batsman to the playing group. Karachi-born Sarfraz, who recently captained Pakistan to an unlikely victory in the Champions Trophy, has accrued 359 runs in 29 T20Is, at a strike rate of 118.48. The 30-year-old averages 28.03 in domestic T20 cricket, including eight half-centuries.

"I've always wanted to play county cricket so this is an exciting opportunity for me,” Sarfraz told yorkshireccc.com. "Yorkshire are a big club with a rich history and huge reputation and I'm proud to be following in the footsteps of other Pakistanis who have played at Headingley like Younus Khan and Inzamam-ul Haq. It’s a dream come true for me and hopefully it can help me become an even better professional.

"I hope I can contribute towards some victories while I'm there and provide the crowd the sort of entertainment they’re looking for. I look forward to having a taste of the T20 Blast.”

The potent right-hander captains Pakistan across all three formats, having recently been appointed as Test captain, and has led Club side Quetta Gladiators to the last two Pakistan Super League finals. During those two seasons Sarfraz has contributed 168 and 183 runs respectively across the competition’s nine innings.

“We looked at Pete’s role in T20 as a wicket-keeper batsman who bats in the top five,” added Moxon. “Through trying to keep the consistency and balance of the team as it is currently, Sarfraz was the perfect choice for that role. With his recent success in the Champions Trophy, we asked a few people about him as far as his cricketing prowess and all the reports coming back are that he’s an outstanding cricketer both as a keeper and batsman. I believe he’ll fit in well to our structures and will be a success.

“When we knew that Pete was going to Bangladesh, we started to think about what we could do. ‘Do we go with our own players? Do we try and bring someone else in?’ We were quite prepared to go with our own players if need be but when we looked at it and enquired about the availability of Sarfraz, it seemed to make sense that we would make him an offer and fortunately he’s agreed to join us.”

Shaun Marsh will play the remaining five Specsavers County Championship matches, beginning with Essex at Scarborough on August 6.

Good little opportunity for Sarfraz.

Yorkshire are a strong side and good experience for the Pakistan skipper.

Yeah I agree it will be a great opportunity for him to enhance the craft of batting and wicketkeeping. I feel this is a great chance for to improve his skills.

"I am very happy to play for them and hopefully I will do well"

"I am looking fwd to the first game against Derbyshire"

"I have heard a lot of good things about Yorkshire, 2 of our legendary players Inzi and MoYo have played for Yorkshire"

"Its a learning process for me and hopefully I will learn a lot"

"I have great memories of playing at this ground as we played an ODI last year and a lot of Pakistanis who live here came to see us so hopefully many will come to support me also"

The club’s new overseas signing was officially unveiled at Park Avenue after joining for the rest of the NatWest T20 Blast.

The Pakistan captain, who debuts against Derbyshire at Headingley tomorrow in his first game since leading his country to Champions Trophy glory against India at The Oval on June 18, said that he was proud to follow in the footsteps of former Yorkshire players and fellow countrymen Younus Khan and Inzamam-ul-Haq.

And although he is only here for the final five group matches, plus up to three knockout fixtures, Sarfaraz believes that his presence can help Yorkshire towards their first T20 trophy and also fuel added interest in their activities among the Asian population.

“There are lots of Pakistani people living in Leeds and Bradford and hopefully they will go and watch Yorkshire,” said the wicketkeeper/batsman, who replaces Peter Handscomb after the Australian was called up for his country’s tour to Bangladesh.

“Bradford almost looks like a Pakistani community, and when I got the contract to play for Yorkshire I got lots of messages from people on things like Twitter and Instagram saying that they were happy.

“Hopefully, the youngsters among them will go on to play for England or Pakistan in the future.

“Lots of Pakistanis play in the Sunday league, or the Saturday league, and hopefully I can help encourage more youngsters as well.”

Sarfaraz, who met local local cricketers and mingled with around 200 fans at a Park Avenue ground undergoing redevelopment, is a marquee signing for a club committed to engaging with people of all ethnicities.

Yorkshire have worked hard in the past decade and more to rid themselves of a reputation that was perhaps not as impressive in this area as it might have been, and they recently entered into a ground-breaking partnership with the England and Wales Cricket Board, Sport England and Bradford Council to restore Park Avenue to its former glory and encourage more participation in cricket among Bradford’s South Asians.

The signing of the Karachi-born Sarfaraz can only help in that respect, with the player yesterday pronouncing himself impressed with the ground’s new state-of-the-art eight-lane net facility and willingly chatting to youngsters present.

As Yorkshire paraded him to the press and public on Yorkshire Day, a symbol of the county’s pride and togetherness, Sarfaraz said that he hoped his immediate impact would be to inspire the club to on-field success.

“The position is very good (in the table),” he said.

“I’ve met the players and they are a very good bunch, and hopefully we will qualify for the finals.

“I’ve also talked with Younus Khan and he said it’s a very good county with a very good management.

“Younus said it’s very professional and hopefully I will learn a lot.”

Sarfaraz, 30, will be the fifth Pakistan overseas player to represent Yorkshire after Younus, Inzamam, Rana Naved-ul-Hasan and Imran Tahir, the leg-spinner who now plays for South Africa.

Like Younus, whose name suddenly changed from Younis after arriving at Headingley a decade ago, Sarfaraz has suddenly gone from “Sarfraz” after he insisted that Sarfaraz, in fact, is the correct spelling.

It is not the spelling of his name that matters, of course, but his cricketing ability, with his T20 record standing at 1,626 runs from 120 games at an average of 28, with a strike-rate of 126 runs per 100 balls.

Sarfaraz also averages 40 from 36 Test matches and 36 from 75 one-day internationals, and he hopes to bring various qualities to Yorkshire’s T20 team.

“I’m a middle order batsman and can strike the ball,” he said.

“I can also rotate the strike and play some tricky shots – late cuts, reverse sweeps – and I will try my level best to help us qualify.

“I feel very lucky to play for Yorkshire, and I’ve always enjoyed playing in England.

“I’m very excited about playing my first game.”

Andrew Gale, Yorkshire’s first-team coach, is equally excited to have Sarfaraz on board.

“He’s someone that we had our eye on for a while, knowing that there might be a chance that Pete would go during the Twenty20s,” he said.

“We wanted to go down the route of replacing Pete like-for-like because we believe that the balance of the team is just right, and that if we’d brought in another batter, it would have meant that we’d have had to drop a bowler.

“I think he’s a fantastic guy, and we spoke to a few coaches who have worked with him and the feedback was really good.”

Gale: Sarfaraz is ideal fit for Yorkshire's T20 Blast campaign

SARFARAZ Ahmed is the ideal fit for Yorkshire’s NatWest T20 Blast campaign, according to Vikings coach Andrew Gale.

Sarfaraz has arrived at Headingley ahead of his spell as one of the county’s two overseas players for the second half of the Blast, replacing Australian Peter Handscomb and joining Shaun Marsh.

And the Pakistan captain, 30, was unveiled to the media and fans at Bradford Park Avenue this week.

The wicketkeeper-batsman has not played since captaining his country to their shock Champions Trophy success in June, and he will debut in tonight’s home clash with fellow title contenders Derbyshire.

“He’s someone we’ve had our eye on for a while, knowing there might be a chance Pete would go during the Twenty20s,” explained Gale.

“We wanted to go down the route of replacing Pete like for like because we believe the balance of the team is just right this year.

“Had we brought in another batsman, we’d have had to drop a bowler to bring Andrew Hodd into the side.

“We’ve felt that being able to play six bowlers has been a real strength of ours.”

This is Sarfaraz’s first taste of county cricket, and he said: “I’m very excited about playing for Yorkshire.

“I’ve heard a lot of good things about Yorkshire. A couple of Pakistan legends in Inzamam-ul-Haq and Younus Khan played here, and hopefully I will do well.

“There are lots of things to achieve for me. It’s a learning process playing county cricket for the first time."

Sarfaraz has scored eight fifties in 120 T20 career appearances, averages 28.03 and has taken 82 catches and stumpings.

“I think he’s a fantastic guy,” continued Gale.

“We did our research on him. He’s meant to be an in your face cricketer on the pitch, and I think that will suit us. Off the field, he’s a real nice guy.

“We’ve spoken to a few coaches who have worked with him, and the feedback’s been really good.”

On the potential of Yorkshire benefitting from the player’s confidence from winning the Champions Trophy, Gale admitted: “That final against India was the last game of cricket he played, so he’ll be pretty confident.

“He’s experienced, he’s a leader, and having leaders in the camp is always good.

“I think he will be a great addition.”

Sarfaraz signed autographs, posed for photos and passed on coaching tips to youngsters at Park Avenue.

“There’s a bit of a buzz around Bradford cricket with what’s happening at Park Avenue at the moment,” said Gale.

“I know Adil (Rashid) has been down there and practiced off his own back, which is great.

“It can only be good for the Asian community, and hopefully we get a few more coming down to watch the Blast games over the next few weeks.”

Sarfaraz echoed those thoughts: "I played at Headingley for Pakistan last year, and the atmosphere was good. There are a lot of Pakistan fans from Leeds and Bradford. Hopefully they come to support me again."

Handscomb left after Sunday’s high-scoring defeat to Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge, in which he scored 31 – his highest score of the T20 campaign.

He returned to Australia for international duty having scored 1,042 runs from 29 matches for Yorkshire in all competitions, including five fifties and two hundreds.

Gale added: “I think Pete’s been outstanding. In the dressing room he’s been a solid character.

"He would have probably wanted a few more runs in the Championship, but he’s been a good guy who has worked hard.

“He’s been everything you’d want from an overseas player. He’ll definitely be someone we’ll look to bring back in the future.”

Hopefully Sarfraz dons the gloves and scores good runs

This is a really unexpected gig so he should make it count

Bowled by Viljoen for 42 off 31. Two fours and three sixes He's the top scorer for Yorkshire tonight.

Commentators on Radio Leeds sounded impressed. Shame the match wasn't televised.

Do you know if he's keeping wicket as well?

If you read one of the two articles above, they mentioned how management did not want to let go of a bowler to add another batsman...with Sarfraz, they get a keepr and a batsman and can still play their 6 bowlers (including all rounders I guess)

I'm baffled

Some matches of the top t20 tournament aren't even televised? Lol then how can some fans even have the gall to compare it with PSL, CPL or even BPL

Not all of the Barclays Premier League matches are televised. It's just that there are a lot of matches. I like Natwest T20 Blast and the last couple of seasons it has got bigger, there are highlights of every match on channels like sky sports news and you can find most highlights online. Most Natwest T20 blast matches are sold out these days.

Way more games than any other t20 competition, would be a logistical nightmare to televise them all alongside ongoing international games as well.

Who was their regular keeper?

Peter Handscomb (Bairstow when not with England).

Both Sarfraz's and Junaid's team have lost their respective matches in very close contests.

Pakistan skipper Sarfaraz Ahmed is Keighley Cricket Club's special guest

KEIGHLEY Cricket Club held a special net session on Sunday morning for Pakistan's Champions Trophy-winning captain Sarfaraz Ahmed, who has signed for Yorkshire for the second half of the NatWest T20 Blast campaign.

"One of his entourage rang us up on Saturday to see if we could arrange it, and about 30 bowlers from the Asian community turned up to bowl at him," said Keighley Cricket Club's chairman Paul Barker.

"Sarfaraz batted for an hour and looked very good technically, and he hit the ball sweetly – like when you time a golf ball."

The 30-year-old, who was unveiled to the media last week at Bradford Park Avenue, has joined Shaun Marsh as one of Yorkshire's two overseas players, replacing Australian Peter Handscomb.

Sarfaraz made his debut in last Friday's one-run defeat to Durham at Chester-le-Street, and his next opportunity could come at home to Lancashire on Friday.

Blow for Yorkshire as Sarfaraz Ahmed recalled by Pakistan

YORKSHIRE director of cricket Martyn Moxon has spoken of his frustration after overseas player Sarfaraz Ahmed’s time at the county was cut short.

The Pakistan captain will make his final appearance in tonight’s must-win NatWest T20 Blast game against Northants at Headingley.

Along with all Pakistan centrally-contracted players, Sarfaraz has been recalled for fitness tests in Lahore ahead of a three-match T20 series between Pakistan and an International Cricket Council World XI.

The series, designed to hasten the return of top-flight international cricket to Pakistan after the terrorist attacks of 2009, was originally due to have been played late next month.

But it has been rescheduled as the Punjab government now want it done and dusted before a political election on September 17, while Pakistan are also preparing for a series against Sri Lanka in the UAE.

It means that Sarfaraz would be unavailable for the NatWest T20 Blast knockout stages should Yorkshire qualify, with the quarter-finals taking place from next Tuesday to Friday, with Finals Day on September 2.

Other counties are similarly affected, with Championship leaders Essex facing the loss of star pace bowler Mohammad Amir, while Pakistanis taking part in the Caribbean Premier League have also been withdrawn.

For Moxon, whose side must win tonight and then hope that other results go their way before the climax of the group stages tomorrow, it is further proof of the escalating difficulty in signing overseas players due to schedule clashes.

“It’s disappointing, and it kind of sums up the situation that we have with international cricket,” he said.

“It’s such a difficult problem to get overseas players for any length of time, and even for the short space of time that we were guaranteed to have Sarfaraz, suddenly the goalposts have changed and he’s not now available.

“It’s a common theme, I’m afraid, and it’s very frustrating. It frustrates all coaches when something unexpected is just dropped on you, and when you sign someone thinking they’re going to be available right to the final if need be, and then within a couple of weeks that’s changed, then it’s very difficult.”

Should Yorkshire progress, they cannot sign an overseas replacement for Sarfaraz, who was himself a replacement for Australian batsman Peter Handscomb after he was chosen for his country’s upcoming tour to Bangladesh.

Competition rules state that counties cannot draft in players for the knockout stages unless they have featured earlier in the tournament.

Yorkshire signed Sarfaraz specifically so that they could maintain the balance of their team, with the 30-year-old a like-for-like replacement for Handscomb as a wicketkeeper batting in the top five.

Should they qualify, they would likely have to recall specialist wicketkeeper Andrew Hodd.

Sarfaraz’s short stint at Headingley has strengthened Yorkshire’s ties with the Asian community but has so far had limited on-field impact.

He started well by top-scoring with 42 in a defeat to Derbyshire at Headingley but has since registered scores of 6, 3 and 2 and performed indifferently behind the stumps. “I thought he played brilliantly against Derbyshire in his first game when he got 40-odd,” said Moxon.

“Since then, he hasn’t got double figures, and obviously it would have been nice for him to get a few more runs, but these things aren’t guaranteed.

“But he played fantastically well in that first innings and I thought: ‘Wow, he’s going to tear it up for us.’

“It’s not quite happened yet, but, hopefully, we can get a good performance from him against Northants.”

Moxon has been impressed with Sarfaraz in general.

“He’s a good bloke, a really nice bloke, who’s fitted in well and got on with the job,” he added.

“He’s worked hard and practised hard, so I’ve no complaints there at all.”

Yorkshire could be boosted by the return of club captain Gary Ballance tonight after a broken left index finger.

Ballance has not played a first-team game since sustaining the injury against South Africa in mid-July, but he hit 69 for the Yorkshire seconds against Durham at Chester-le-Street yesterday. England all-rounder David Willey is set to play as he continues his recovery from a minor knee injury caused by bruising on the bone.

The start-time has been put back from 6.30pm to 7pm to accommodate television coverage.

Yorkshire (from): Ballance, Bresnan, Fisher, Kohler-Cadmore, Leaning, Lyth, Marsh, Patterson, Plunkett, Rafiq, Rashid, Sarfaraz, Willey.
