What's new

You made the laziest century in the history of cricket, and play for yourself: Journo to Babar Azam

Yeah, lets bash our only player who seems to be consistently successful at his job. Today is a good example of why you need a player who holds the innings together while others do the power hitting around him, had Babar gotten out playing big shots then the team would not have even crossed 200. This is the reality, on tough pitches, this batting lineup cannot even score 280.

What do u propose. That the next man gets out for 99?
We lose because we can't finish with the bat and or our bowling has been off

Why aren’t such tough questions asked of Sarfaraz? Such as “how do you feel about not finishing the game for pakistan?”

How often has he helped us through now?

Having Sarfaraz bat down the order is like having an Audi in a F1 race

Next match Babar should hit a 6 and get run out with the SR of 600. Let’s see how much other Bradman score. Without Babar we would not even score 150.

Babar's response explains why he'll never be a great player. So meek! He basically let a nobody call him out like that and basically sat there like a sissy!

Come on, dude! Show some guts and give that journalist a piece of your mind! Still addressing him as 'sir'

No personality or character!

Pakistan just lost a match to freaking Afghanistan.... alarm bells should be going off instead people are concerned that a journalist asked Bobby a sharp question which was completely on point. Perhaps the wording were a bit rude and unrefined but can't say Bobby didn't have it coming. Today like countless times before Babar scored a ton at an ok pace and just when the time came to up the scoring rate and actually cash in he got out. It wasn't the first time it happened and definitely won't be the last time.

I think some questions are designed to instigate the player into saying something rash and stupid. This is one of those questions. We have seen Kohli has been left fuming at times in his press conference

Like this question to Kohli after the Champions Trophy final

'Did you feel any pleasant moment in the match?' :)))

He is a professional, this is how they are supposed to behave. Simply because certain players behave like angry children doesn't mean Babar has to follow them. Instead of making a big deal out of it he simply replied in a calm professional manner.

Considering the embarrassment that Pakistan cricket team has been for the past 2 years, and particularly Babar's relatively slow 100 against England in a very high scoring match, the question raised by the interviewer in frustration is not as ridiculous as people are making it out to be. However, Babar could have easily responded by giving him "a piece of his mind" but his response was very professional which adequately explained the pace of his batting.

This shows more character than players acting like spoiled, entitled brats. This is how professionals handle such questions. Good on Babar.

Who mentioned 100+ SR?

BTW - I am a Babar fan, and my point was towards his critics.

Just an arbitrary benchmark - there is no way a no. 3 scoring at a SR of 100+ should be criticized for playing selfish - that too batting first.

Just my opinion...

Babar would not be receiving this question if he was batting at 4 for India or England.

I'm sorry but nowhere in the world do professional athletes take this kind of crap from journalists. Not sure which professionals you follow, but they're definitely not "supposed" to behave like that.

Babar did not have to respond "childishly" but should have stood up for himself and shown some self respect. He did not remain calm but stuttered his way out of an insulting question by not showing any spine!

Ridiculous how you are equating standing up for yourself to acting like spoilt brat. This is how softies would fare in the face of insult, poor on Babar!

will you repeat the history of becoming the prime minsiter of pakistan if you win the world cup.

As i have explained earlier, the interviewer was not wrong. Babar played incredibly slow in a very high scoring match, which can be termed as selfish. Babar's intentions might not have been selfish, he was most likely following the incompetent team management's plans, however, it doesn't not change the fact that was an incredibly poor 100. I'm certain millions of people were asking the same question, why did Babar play so slow? So i'm not entirely sure how else Babar could have stepped up for himself knowing his team has been utter garbage and his innings have not been great. Instead of reacting in a poor manner, Babar handled it well.

Babar did stand up for himself, but in a professional manner without getting angry or misbehaving. He said "i followed the team management plan and if not for me the team would have been bowled out for much less". That's all that needed to be said. How else should he have stood up for himself? By telling the interviewer how great he is and how many records he has broken? How without him the team would be nothing? Yeah, i think Babar handled it well.

As far as Babar stuttering, this is how he is, even when he is with friends.

The validity of the question is a separate topic. Regardless of right or wrong, the question was asked in an insulting manner which no professional athlete with strong character would tolerate.

You again mentioned professionalism which I've already addressed in my previous post so I won't repeat it all over again.

As for how he should've responded, I'd suggest you watch how other top athletes respond to dumb questions like this. YouTube has loads of examples.

Except it was not a dumb question. The question was harsh, but a valid one. The team has lost 11 straight matches. It has lost to a minnow. In fact the team has done nothing but lose for the past 2 years, and nobody is held responsible. And on top of that, in a high scoring match, Babar plays one of the worst innings that can only be termed as selfish. These sort of innings have been an issue for us for awhile now. No matter how many 100s our players score we end up losing because of the SR of those 100s. I'm surprised the question was raised sooner. This question is harsh, but certainly not dumb. The fact that this question by asked only shows how pathetic our team and players have been, and how frustrated the fans are.

Again, not questioning the validity of the question. Still, nothing justifies total disregard of ethics when asking a question. Point was, Babar should not cop abuse like that and the fact that he did shows lack of spine.

If Babar’s role in this team is to play out the 50 overs, then I’m sorry to say he didn’t do a good job.

what kind of third grade journalism is this. Half the Pakistani population has no idea of decorum and common decency.

It is a very valid question. You bat for at least 80 to 100 balls every other match and yet all your runs are inconsequential.

He is a good player but certainly not a match winner.

Babar Azam: 112 off 108 balls, SR 103
10 other Pakistani batsmen: 147/9 off 179 balls, SR 82

Journalist: yOu MaDe ThE lAzIeSt CeNtUrY

This is the key stat.

In this match there wasn't much else Babar could do.

Reminds me of the opening question to Kohli after the CT 2017 final.

All-time cringe moment.

Poor journalist he was a bit on the older side I think I get what he was trying to say he actually meant to ask that you probably never felt in the whole match if there was anything pleasant for you but his English didn’t help him out really and saj bhai can you please confirm who this reporter was who asked babar this mediocre question and how dare he honestly

I don't understand why everyone targeting Babar, our best player. Blame Malik, Hafeez, fakhar, sarfraz,, imaad
You need to understand how lobby system works in Pakistan. Players who do not wish to serve interest of these lobbies will be on their hitlist. In some cases, these lobbies target players who are in way of their favourite players like Imam. They will never be happy with these player's performances even if they consistently do better than the rest.

His job is to score 300 alone
Lol

When Kohli does the same for his team he is said to be a world class and when we have Baber achieving same stats which are outstanding but yet we are here targeting him. It's like Baber is the only batsman in this line up and other are here to sell fruits.

He works for Samaa in the UK.

I know his name but won't disclose it here. He asked Kohli a question that irritated Kohli at captain's day, turned up late for Mickey's presser at Headingley and started asking questions that had already been asked.

That was unprofessional of the journalist but its nothing new. Kudos to Babar for giving a reserved reply. I hope he doesn't take it to heart.

I don't think there was anything wrong with Babar's innings. People say he should increase his strike rate but I don't he's a finisher nor does he have the ability to increase his strike rate. Its his weakness but this weakness should be compensated by the other members of the team. Its a whole team. If others had stepped up we would have won. Seniors like Shoaib and Hafeez should realize this the most. They're extra baggages.

Baber does his job outstandingly well and he has been very consistent especially against top teams. Pakistan has never had such a treasure in last 10 years and then we have people with belpw 50 iq like this reporter and instead of praising his knock he disrespect him in thoroughly unprofessional way.

Babar is a good batsman, not a match winner. When he scores a 100, it ensures we get to 250. This was good in 1990s but on these pitches, any score below 310 is easy.
Babar needs to realise he needs big hitting.

He made century he had sr over 100, what about Malik, Hafeez, Harris.

This is utter stupidity. Babar will be an automatic choice in any international team, some Pak fans don't know what a gem of a player they have. Don't ruin him ask others to join party..

You need to realise how low is your understanding of cricket. Baber scoring 112 at 100+ strike rate coming at 3 is good enough. That is all he can do, anchor innings while scoring run a ball. Big hitting is job of batsmen coming down the order. 203 for 3 wickets with more than 10 overs to go is a very good position to be at considering Pak lost 3 quick wickets. It's not his fault rest of the batting is pathetic.

Babar's response explains why he'll never be a great player. So meek! He basically let a nobody call him out like that and basically sat there like a sissy!

He did it well. You know "lobbies" waiting to destroy careers when players lose their temper even though they are right. These media lobbies are disgusting thing to happen to Pakistan cricket. Still remember how Harris Sohail personal belief was targetted in media and they were criticising him for seeing ghosts. Pakistani media is worst out there. They are talk more gosspis rather than constructive criticism or talk about logic.

Pakistani people appreciate 0 over 100 with great hard work. Mind blowing.

Not sure why my post has been deleted in this thread.

Anyway, this guy made a lazy 'century'. A century is 100 runs out of 262. I hope the journalist knew this before asking. Idiot.

Calling him sir wasn't coz he was scared it was coz he's in a professional environment. It's not that big of a player to show attitude. Also what do you mean by 'he sat there like a sissy'? Do you want him to stand up and start punching the journalist?

Used to be a time when before asking a question you had to say your name and organisation, but of late that's stopped.

Read the first sentence of my statement again, triggered fan.

A team that has lost its last 11 games on the trott and has now lost to Afghanistan should not expect love and support from the public.

No ones expecting love and support However questions shouldnt be insulting or personal They should be professional and based on facts Babar player well today the others didnt So to call his inninngs slow and selfish was just plain nonsense

If reporters cant talk sense they have no business asking questions

So let me get this straight.

All the Babar critics on PP have been criticizing Babar's selfishness and slow SR when batting, and now a journalist asks a questions raising these points, the journalist is unprofessional? Right.

There is a way of asking questions Journos are supposed to be professional and intelligent and not asking stupidly worded and frankly insulting questions

He couldve asked something like this

"pakistan have been consistently losing more games than they have won lately and one of the reasons for this is the overall batting strike rates over the last couple of years being the lowest among most international teams, what is the reason for this"

"Why is that pakistan batting have been posting under par scores over the last year or so whether its in england or in uae, is there an issue with the batting game plan or are batsman afraid to express themselves for fear of failure?

You can ask probing questions intelligently without attacking or insulting people

<iframe src="https://player.vimeo.com/video/338359947" width="640" height="480" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay; fullscreen" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Surely Babar and other players have lot to improve.

But, how can a journalist be so unprofessional and with zero ethics?

You can't question that way.

You've have all rights to question, but that's not the way you question.

And, he's the only reliable batsman too.

Can you explain how yet another century at a Sr of above 100 is the laziest ever?

if he scores 100 at 100 strike rate it ensures 250. waao...
it means only babar is playing as a batsman in the team. what others are doing in the team.

Babar Azam is only player in world cricket whose game favors the opposition. If he gets out early than we have one batsman less and if he performs by going to his milestone at snail's pace we end up 30-40 runs short.

Pakistan team total is getting lower and lower with every game and the bowling department is not able to cope with these batting favored conditions. Coach and Chief selector are trying to push their own favorites while bowling coach Mahmood is failing to devise a plan for bowlers.

Babar Azam quest for milestones will only result in more agony for Pakistan fans as well as the team morale.

Mind telling us if he has played a match winning innings so far in his first 3-4 years?

Yes he has. But as I said, if we feel he isn't winning enough matches, the simple answer is to replace him with a superior match winner.

Please spot a replacement for number #3 or #1 batsman or even an opener in WC PAkistan squad.

This is not new Inzamam has been not picking any replacement since Mani the ignorant became chairman in 2018. Babar Azam has been made sure to play all series across all formats for last 2 years. The guy who averaged 6.20 in NZ tour 2018 has been given a free pass.

Can Faheem or Rizwan bat on #3? Abid Ali is also opener/wicketkeeping option. There is no one down ooptin for last many years since Inzamam became cheif selector.

And he is still playing politics.
Faheem has returned to Pakistan and what I know is Abid is soon to follow. Only Rizwan will remain there with Inzamam already in UK.

Haris Sohail is the #3 backup.

There is no one-down option for the last few years because Babar Azam has been doing an excellent job.

I was being facetious of course. For the tactical geniuses out there who don't appreciate sarcasm let me simplify.

Pakistan batting is not that good. We have one batsman who has a relatively sound technique against all types of bowling, and specifically fast bowling including bouncers, and that is Babar Azam.

The rest of the options are both poor in technique, and neither are they match winners. But if there are some anyone would like to put forward as an alternative then please go ahead.

They want the best batsmen to be dropped and most likely to be replaced with slower, poorer batter in Harris. Man can't run and field..

Unbelievable... Don't chuck out Malik or Hafeez but drop your best batsmen who can bat, field and has one of the best fitness in team.

Bunch of jokers...

What is your case? Who would you like to see instead of Babar at one down?

Hardly matters there is no other option. They've made the team to ensure he plays all matches.
In a chasing scenario they'll put Babar as opener as he plays his shots when 6 players are in the circle.

Unfortunately now average of a selfish player matters more than the team wins.

Check the post how Azam is being called doing a good job while Pakistan team has lost almost all of its ODI matches this year. Pakistan has lost 12 straight matches where Azam's average is 52, shows how low we have gone now. This PCB needs an overhaul.

Theres bigger issues than babar strike rate which does need improving but isnt no 1 on the list of concern

The mid order of malik hafeez and sarfraz is poor The team doesnt have any finishers with the bat, the new ball ball bowlers dont take any wickets The death overs bowling cant close off innings, the fielding and catching is lowsy, theres no quality spinner in the team

Id say these deficiencies are contributing to the losses rather than babars hundreds at a run a balls Dont you?

His case is Inzi not picking Pakistani AB de Villiers who is striking at 120 and averaging over 80 in domestic cricket.

Forget DeVilliers Inzi has'nt picked a consistent batting position for last 3 years.

He has been playing musical chairs with Azam and Haris Sohail. REally insane to think someone picking player of DEvilliers calibre when he has'nt picked any solid bat during his tenure.

I don't think you have witnessed torture of YK, Azhar and Asad at 3. Baber is the best we had at 3 in long long times.

You yourself say there is no other option, then you complain they've made the team to ensure he plays every match. If there is no other option, then what is it you expect?

For the record, I have said Babar is selfish and not a natural finisher. But he is a class batsman and no other Pakistan batsman is. Neither have I seen any other Pakistan batsman who is capable of finishing. But I am still waiting for you to advise if there is one you have in mind that I have missed.

When you have player(s) being rewarded for playing for themselves than the team than morale also takes a hit.

Pakistan team is low on morale and to an extent fearful as their only working department can't help the team. Batting was always deficient and lacklustre it was bowling that defended scores of 137 or 140 for T20s where Azam was making 50s with 98 strike rate in T20.

Team's morale is effectedas almost all probables have cut out apart from Inzamam favorites and he has brought in more TTFs like Wahab Riaz. Coach Arthur has lost most of the investment like Faheem and is now need to putup with Imam and Babar which means more pressure on the bowling to defend totals which will 20-30 runs short.

I don't consider this Pakistan team for me this is Inzamam XI

You yourself say there is no other option, then you complain they've made the team to ensure he plays every match. If there is no other option, then what is it you expect?

For the record, I have said Babar is selfish and not a natural finisher. But he is a class batsman and no other Pakistan batsman is. Neither have I seen any other Pakistan batsman who is capable of finishing. But I am still waiting for you to advise if there is one you have in mind that I have missed.

You need to watchn Quaid e Azam trophy and can see Pakistani players ignored by this selection committee given even 50% of similar opportunities to this backed Akmal cousin Babar Azam they would've done much better and for the team.

Class is meaningless when you're contributing to team losses. I've already replied there is no #3 in this team or in the reserves.

What about taking stats from last 5 matches or more and compare the rest strike rate with Azams.

Or why not put the percentage of dot balls Azam played compared to the rest of the team.

Making selective stats to back this selfish player will not help Pakistan team. Only put pressure on the bowlers who already have to contend with underperformers in batting lineup.

I have shown you his dot ball stats in the past but you ignored them. He's a better strike rotator than almost all of our batsmen, barring Sarfaraz.

You're the one relying on selective stats.

Babar has some weaknesses but most want him to work on those and rectify them. Your method of replacing him with XYZ player and expecting that player to deliver at a similar level is not realistic.

Babar does'nt consider his selfish game his weakness, he is being picked and rewarded for slowing down run rate for last 2 years, why would he rectify this?
When inzamam has been replacing new players from the bench without getting chance, Azam is easily replaceable given a batting performer is given a full series. When was last time Azam was replaced by a youngster under chief selector Inzamam. It has'nt happened. Once Babar was injured with a bowl hitting his wrist he was replaced by Malik and Hafeez.

The selection committee has been playing with the Pakistani nation for far too long.

I can't comment on players I haven't seen, but of the ones who are in the squad, I can think of at least half a dozen who should be replaced before Babar. That is why I consider him the least of our problems. Asif Ali is a fantastic clean hitter but he hasn't finished a single match in Pakistan colours, usually gives his wicket in some lame manner despite being picked to do specifically that job. World cup is another level to domestic cricket and your everyday local hacks need exposure to the best to develop.

Name the players that can replace babar. Either name them or kindly stop with the hate.

And please dont mention fixers like sharjeel or shahzaib.

What r u on about?
Calling him sir wasn't coz he was scared it was coz he's in a professional environment. It's not that big of a player to show attitude. Also what do you mean by 'he sat there like a sissy'? Do you want him to stand up and start punching the journalist?

Instead of asking me silly questions, that I've actually already answered, I'd suggest you watch how top athletes from others sports deal with insulting question like that.
