12 best one down batsmen of all-time in test cricket in order of merit.

1.Don Bradman
2.Viv Richards
3.Brian Lara
4.Walter Hammond
5.George Headley
6.Ricky Ponting/Rahul Dravid
8.Rohan Kanhai
9.Kumar Sangakaara
10.Ian Chappell
11.Ken Barrington
12.Hashim Amla

Bradman's figures spoke for itself and strike rate who would have been at the top in any era..Viv's domination of supreme pacers with an average of 61 won him the edge over Lara evaluating the bowling and the fact that a majority of Viv's aggregate runs were scored at one down while in Lara's case around 3/5th were scored at later positions.Lara's average was only an inch behind Viv's.Placed 3rd because his 2 best scores were registered at one down.In pure match-winning prowess Viv was the king.Hammond's outstanding average of around 74 was scaled considering the bowling and opposition of his era whose domination was in the Viv Richards class.Just a shade behind was Headley averaging around 71 who tackled wet pitches better than Bradman and singlehandedly carried the shoulders of team's bating like noone ever with Lara being the closest.Hammond's greater domination made me rank him above Headley. At 6th I tied Rahul Dravid and Ricky Ponting who rendered an equally invaluable service to the team's cause.Their playing styles contrasted with each other like chalk and cheese but still sculpted many a famous win..Rahul the ultimate man to revive a sinking ship while Ponting could take agression to it's ultimate zenith to win games. Both had outstanding averages in team wins and at their peak were rated even above Tendulkar aound 2004-06.Arguably no batsmen was ever as consummate or talented as Rohan Kanhai who at his best could even surpass Bradman. Some experts rated him a better batsmen than Sobers ,averaging over 58 in test wins.He topped the averages in Australia in 1972 representing the rest of the world.Kumar Sangakaara was statistically next to only Bradman but is rated lower than many because he played relatively weaker opposition being at his best against Zimbabwe,Bangladesh etc. and not playing Australia at it's best like past greats. In a crisis Ian Chappell would overshadow brother Greg and the great Viv Richards averaging 50.94 with 12 centuries at one down. The ultimate man to ressurect a team from the grave. Both Ken Barrington and Hashim Amla were masters in building an innings when the chips were down, both having remarkable bating records.

Bradman,Viv,Lara,Hammond,Ponting,Kanhai and Sangakaara were basically batsmen in the attacking or agressive mould.Headley,Dravid,Ian Chappell,Barrington or Amla played more painstaking or laborious innings.

Lara over anyone as Bradman is overrated in today's game. The only reason Lara is not rated higher is because he was on a terrible team. If he played just 5-6 years earlier, he would be ranked as the greatest of all time rather than one of even though he came at 4 instead of 3.

What about Viv?I think he was more of match-winer being more dynamic or explosive.More opponents prized Viv's wicket than Lara's.
