How are people confidently including players like Garner. You can't have seen them play and pure stats don't mean much. The One day game was completely different. Averages are hardly comparable. Test matches at least have some similarity. In no particular order,
Garner
Akram
McGrath
Pollock
Waqar
I can't leave out statistically the best ever ODI bowlerHow are people confidently including players like Garner. You can't have seen them play and pure stats don't mean much. The One day game was completely different. Averages are hardly comparable. Test matches at least have some similarity.
Then why have you picked Waqar?I can't leave out statistically the best ever ODI bowler
Yes this seems fair. Steyn is the only one I could maybe question. I feel he was better in tests than ODIs.Since the thread is about the players I have watched, my list is:
McGrath
Akram
Warne
Steyn
Bumrah
He is one of the best ever. 13 ODI fifers are hard to ignoreThen why have you picked Waqar?
He is one of the best ever. 13 ODI fifers are hard to ignore
That is an impressive accomplishment, but his economy rate of 4.68 during the time he played is not outstanding. He also did not achieve significant success in the World Cups.He is one of the best ever. 13 ODI fifers are hard to ignore

Perhaps. It was a different era of cricket. It's like comparing Sydney Barnes with Kuldeep Yadav. Who knows who's really better given so many variablesHe was 1979 WC Final key performer. Best ODI bowler of one of the greatest ODI side of all-time.

You cannot just cannot drop McGrath. He was the ideal of one-day bowling. Should be the first name on any selection.Only based on preference and from the players seen on Live TV and not YouTube videos.
Warne
Steyn
Wasim
Murali
Ambrose
Cannot. Simply cannot.I can't leave out statistically the best ever ODI bowler
Shami's strike rate is unrivalled by any bowler in ODI historyCannot. Simply cannot.
Shami is top 5 easy.
Also you have to factor in Shami bowled entirely in 2 new ball era. A world class reverse swing bowler never had the benefit of reverse swing due to this. Imagine him bowling with old ball in 90s.Cannot. Simply cannot.
Shami is top 5 easy.
If only the great idiot kohli picked him for semis in 2019. We would have wiped them out and England. Also you have to factor in Shami bowled entirely in 2 new ball era. A world class reverse swing bowler never had the benefit of reverse swing due to this. Imagine him bowling with old ball in 90s.
Yes McGrath has strong case against Steyn,You cannot just cannot drop McGrath. He was the ideal of one-day bowling. Should be the first name on any selection.
I wouldn't go so far as to call it a joke but Steyn's very difficult to consider all-time in ODIs. Neither his average nor his strike rate are in the top 20. He doesn't have an iconic performance on the biggest stage either.Steyn in odi is a joke. Cmon steyn doesn't deserve top 7 lol in odi
Tests yes top 5
But not odi.
Malinga's a good one. Ambrose had a lot of aura and excellent economy but he just wasn't enough of a wicket taker. Less than 1.33 wickets per game as reflected in his strike rate.Akram
Malinga
Warne
Ambrose
Bumrah
Am fan of ambrose so u can call as favouritism. As per ambrose he never pushed himself in odis as much as test matches .we need an intimidating one and I don't see any one as intimidating and equally probing one.Malinga's a good one. Ambrose had a lot of aura and excellent economy but he just wasn't enough of a wicket taker. Less than 1.33 wickets per game as reflected in his strike rate.
this cannot be a serious opinion...Shami and Bumrah are way better than Wasim, Waqar who were chokers in tournaments.
Shami is literally the GOAT
My man, SA and you dont mention Donald? Steyn? Ntini?Top 10:-
Aus - McGrath, Starc, Warne
SA - S Pollock
Eng - None
WI - Garner
Pak - Wasim, Saqlain
Ind - Bumrah
NZ - Hadlee
SL - Murali
That's my top 10.
Donald, Waqar, Shami, Lee were on a tad expensive side.
My man, SA and you dont mention Donald? Steyn? Ntini?
And then for WI no Ambrose? Walsh?
17 greatest ODI bowlers of all-time:-
Aus - McGrath, Starc, Lee, Warne
SA - Pollock, Donald
Eng - None
Ind - Bumrah, Shami
NZ - Hadlee, Bond
Pak - Wasim, Saqlain, Waqar
WI - Garner, Holding, Ambrose
SL - Murali
All these are top ODI bowlers and not sub 25-26 average or beyond bowlers. The likes of Boult, Bracken, Zak, Vaas etc would do well if paired with any two of above names but in terms of rankings are below them as ODIs bowlers purely.
SA with Pollock and Donald were a team to beat in 1999 while the best odi bowlers to come from NZ were Hadlee and Bond. England's best bowler is Darren Gough, averaging a sub 26 while Flintoff was a superb all rounder but purely as bowler, not at the same level as any of these guys.
Imran and Kapil were again sub 26-27 averaging bowlers and so were Marshall and Steyn. Malinga was excellent but that average of 28 won't cut for me, definitely a must in T20Is.
His bowling is available in full and or highlights on YouTube bro, you can see him play lolHow are people confidently including players like Garner. You can't have seen them play and pure stats don't mean much. The One day game was completely different. Averages are hardly comparable. Test matches at least have some similarity.
Wasim

Greatest match winners in history of ODI cricket
Agreed on Steyn but Donald and Ntini were just over hyped bowlers! My man, SA and you dont mention Donald? Steyn? Ntini?
And then for WI no Ambrose? Walsh?
He probably is not GOAT. But his point has merit. Look at world cup performance of bowlers agianst non minnows. Show me anyone that can remotely match Shami. Let us not forget post DRS fast bowlers suffered more. In addition to that Shami bowled during the two new ball era all his career.this cannot be a serious opinion...

Shami is better than Bumrah in ODIs. At one point he was picking 2 wickets every match on an average. He has the best strike rate in history. Average, Strike rate. All in the current era where ball is not allowed to be scuffed up, two new balls are used. Imagine the bowlers from past without reverse. Statistically he is better than Bumrah as well. Bumrah is probably more versatile. I don't say he is GOAT. He is definitely one of the best in ODI history.Being better than Waqar in ODI is a low bar to be honest, but Shami being way better than Wasim? That hardly makes any sense.
Wasim was in the same class as Bumrah. May be slightly easier to hit but in the same class. Are we going to put Shami over Wasim/Bumrah just based on 10-12 ODI games? Yes, Shami record is really great and unmatched, but 10-12 games won't put him over Wasim/Bumrah.
Nah, I think you are reading too much into 10-12 WC games here.Shami is better than Bumrah in ODIs. At one point he was picking 2 wickets every match on an average. Here is Shami stats: Shami goes for 5.5 runs per over and Bumrah goes for 4.5 runs per over. That's a very huge gap. SR is 25 for Shami and 30 for Bumrah. Not a big gap there.

Against top sides in that listShami's sample is low due to continuous injuries and team management undecided on whom to pick- Bhuvi or Shami?
Unless you watch your cricket on paper, you shouldn't pick Shami over Bumrah. If Shami played 10 matches in World Cup instead of 5, his WC average would have been same as Bumrah instead of 11.
Against top sides in that list
Shami 12 matches 42 wickets
Bumrah 15 matches 24 wickets
So it is not even close. Bumrah is a better bowler. Nobody denies that as he has too many tricks up his sleeve. But in terms of sheer performance, match breaking spells Shami has proven record. Bumrah is breathing fire only in the last 2 or 3 years in LOIs. Shami has been doing over a decade. Did exceptionally well in all 3 world cups.
They bowled the the most deadly spells in history of ODI cricket. Performances that will never be repeated. What exactly did they win together.
They bowled the the most deadly spells in history of ODI cricket. 70/1 would become 110 all out in a matter of few overs.
Twice made WC final in 90's.
My favourite was their routing of India in pepsi cup 1999
Only once have I have seen Aussie batsmen being scared of getting hit.
Shoaib at the Gabba in 2002
Bhaijaan, there was no mention in the OP that all the bowlers have to play together to be rated as greatTwice made World Cup final
What an achievement. We all were witness to Waqar playing such crucial role in those tournaments lol
Thought this thread was about ODI cricket.Bharat’s last two tours of Australia had them running for their lives against bouncers from our bowlers. Bowlers who actually won something in Australia.
I am always amazed how he shows up twice the bowler in the World Cups. It's like glasses coming off Kent Clark. How an uncle looking guy starts rattling stump after stump, very unexpected. If Shami played the 2003 World Cup, we were winning it. He would have wrecked havoc on those pitches and would have broken the wickets record.

There are so many intangible factors based on evolution of the format. For the first 15 years or so one dayers had a template of start very slow and score in the last 10 overs. Srikkanth was an exception. Then power play aggression became the new thing in the 90s. Then the flat pitch era in the 2000s where totals of 350 even 400 started happening. Then the two new ball era where batsmen dominated. Then that 4 fielder rule which transformed England into a beastly unit. So bowlers were relatively under less pressure for the first 15 to 20 years. Post 2000 bowlers started feeling the heat. After 2013 or 14 bowlers were at the mercy of batsmen.Note - above 2 posts are performances against SENA , Ind , Pak , SL , WI
I did create a thread taking ERA factor into account 5 years back. There are so many intangible factors based on evolution of the format. For the first 15 years or so one dayers had a template of start very slow and score in the last 10 overs. Srikkanth was an exception. Then power play aggression became the new thing in the 90s. The highest accolade of them all: immortality at the hands of Sachin Tendulkar. What exactly did they win together.
Four of those five aren’t even that country’s best ODI bowlers. My 5 greatest ODI bowlers of all time:
1) Wasim Akram
2) Glenn McGrath
3) Murali (I know some call him a chucker but he is not a chucker as per ICC)
4) Waqar Younis
5) Chaminda Vaas.
Why the double weight? Why not triple? Or quadruple, or 10x? Or 50x? It is after all the most important tournament for that format is it not?I made ODI bowling table giving weightage to WC performace.
Criteria used min 100 overall wickets , 5 WC wickets.

Bruh, Venkatesh Prasad had better figures in that game than any of the fellas you mentioned. That game was won by Azhar Mehmood’s fiver. And I really do hope that your next argument is arguing that Azhar Mehmood is an all time great ODI bowler. They bowled the the most deadly spells in history of ODI cricket. Performances that will never be repeated.
70/1 would become 110 all out in a matter of few overs.
Twice made WC final in 90's.
My favourite was their routing of India in pepsi cup 1999.
Before you respond, just want to add that Shoaib did take two wickets too in that game, those of batting stalwarts such as Sadgopan Ramesh and Amar Khurasiya. The two venerable titans of Indian batting.Bruh, Venkatesh Prasad had better figures in that game than any of the fellas you mentioned. That game was won by Azhar Mehmood’s fiver. This one just keeps giving, Prasad also outscored Anwar in that game. So yeah. Top example bro. Before you respond, just want to add that Shoaib did take two wickets too in that game, those of batting stalwarts such as Sadgopan Ramesh and Amar Khurasiya. The two venerable titans of Indian batting.
