Zafar Gohar - Performance Watch

He's been overlooked this tournament with all the focus on Nawaz and Asghar and came good today!

Top class performance from z gohar.
This is type of competition we want to develop amongst our young guns- future of Pakistan provided we don't panic and bring back the dads army players.

He definitely looked better than Imad Wasim. At least he puts some revolutions on the ball unlike Wasim.

Exactly- Imad just doesn't turn it enough and isn't going to be a threat unlike Zafar & Asghar

High quality bowling by him today.

# Headache for selectors.

Ahson8 has lahore got a game tommorow ?

The first round of the tournament finished today, with the prior concluded game between LHR & QT. Will now shift to Sharjah, with the first game there taking place overmorrow, and tomorrow being a rest day.

There is no game tomorrow. A break day from PSL.

No games tomorrow.

The first round of the tournament finished today, with the prior concluded game between LHR & QT. Will now shift to Sharjah, with the first game there taking place overmorrow, and tomorrow being a rest day.

This means rehearsals are over or may be may be sekectors may watch first match of Wednesday but I don't think so they would and I think they will announce the squad before that game or would send names to ICC and would request them not to make it public next 7 days to keep up PSL intensity and moral of players.

In my team I had :
Imad, Nawaz , Asghar , malik & Afridi.

I had one place for allrounder or pacer or batsman or Usama Mir or Saeed Ajmal. Now we can pick Zafar Gohar. Left arm spinners are less risky than legspinners who are wrist spinners.

But still it's huge headache for selectors. Whom to select whom to drop ¿

Zafar and Asghar are specialist where as Immad and Nawaz are all rounders.

Zafar and Asghar are both good, I like Asghar little better because he is tall and gets extra bounce... Selectors and coaches may know more who is better... Based on what I have seen, I would pick Asghar thus far...but we have to see the whole PSL to make up the final selection...

Immad does not spin the ball and has very little variation... I would pick Nawaz over him... There batting is comparable, Immad is poor player of pace... We need to see more Nawaz's batting to judge how good he is... Today he played well...

I can see we taking two of these four to the WT20 and they would be useful against western teams, as I said many times in other threads... Spin strategy is key for WT20 success.

Yasir on Wednesday we have to announce the squad. We took 2 days extension. We had to announce it on 8th but now we have to announce team on 10th.

It's tricky pick, I am sure selectors will have more data then me... I would pick Nawaz and Asghar!!!

But two left arm spinners are must for WT20...

Aaliya Rasheed Sports Journalist has told that Zafar did not play 2nd game because he had problem with his wrist.

I've been most impressed with Zafar ever since I saw him play live in England for the under 19 team. He looked head and shoulders above the rest and he is very much a modern cricketer. A very good fielder and no mug with the bat.

Since you are selecting your T20 team based on PSL players , Pakistan A last 2 series & Pakistan team players performance of last 3 months so you don't have a quality seam up allrounder or a quality fast bowler among these players who have been tested. No batsman either.

So on spin friendly Bangladesh and Indian wickets you need to pack the squad with spin bowling allrounders who can bat plus genuine spinners.

In a squad of 16 you can have :

1. Afridi
2. Malik
3. Imad
4. Nawaz
6. Asghar
7. Gohar / Anwar Ali
8. Rumman
9. Amir
10. Wahab
11. Junaid
12. Hafeez
13. Shehzad
14. Babar
15. Sarfraz
16. Umar Akmal

You are saying only 2 left arm spinners. Ok Asghar & Nawaz. So if we take out Zafar, & Imad from my proposed team and you don't want Anwar Ali or Rizwan than who would you select for these 3 places ?

Keep it in mind that there is only one performer with significant performances outside this bunch i.e Fakhar Zaman and he isn't playing PSL.

Don't think he was that good, was again inconsistent in lines and wayward.

Did get the ball to turn. But then there's pitch factor.

Interesting comment of former left arm spinner Nadeem Khan which I would like to share here.

Aaliya Rasheed asked him if you have to pick one of Asghar or Nawaz for Pakistan who would you pick ?

He said I don't think Nawaz is a genuine left arm spinner. He is an allrounder so there is no comparison.

He further illustrated that today we saw Zafar Gohar taking 4 wickets where he turned the ball and was successful but Asghar is class apart.

He said Asghar has a simple action and his reach to the crease is slow due to which he has more time than other spinners around to check the feet movement of the batsman. Nadeem said that due to his height he gets more bounce than all others and he turns it too. He said that Asghar bowls two different types of straight deliveries one which is loopy and one which is very fast and his armer is very difficult to pick.

So he concluded that his first pick would be Asghar.

Poor Hawkeye still in denial hoping his analysis was right lol. You will join the bandwagon just like you did for Babar.

Desperate one, ain't ya?

Everyone played on the same pitch.

Nawaz, Babar, and Nabi got hit around. There is no way you can put him down because of the pitch.

This team has way to many bowlers... T20 is batsman's game...

The problem is we have lot of holes, for instance:

Top Order:

This is where you win matches and this is the least settle area. Ideally if Kamran can open, this solves many problems, he can play pacers well and can provide extra batsman in middle order (since he is keeper)... Then you don't have to deplete bowling to add extra batsman...Rizwan and Sarfraz don't give us that leverage...

I think even now Kamran plays pace better than Shezad...

Bowlers
For Asian Teams
Amir
Tanvir
Wahab/Irfan

Tanvir is handy with bat, generally good in T20, even Indians have never really taken him to cleaners, so he should be ok...
Irfan extra bounce could be good specially for asian teams...

For Westerners:
Amir
Irfan/Wahab/Tanvir
Asghar for western teams.

We need extra spinner for

Allrounders

Afridi
Nawaz/Anwar Ali (asian Vs West, but generally mostly Nawaz because conditions might be spin friendly anyway)
Malik

Batsman

Hafeez
Shezad/Mukthar (I don't know we have much choice, Mukthar has not played in a while so it will be Shezad)
Umar
Babar

After that I am blank :(
We need atleast one more batsman, I don't know who that would be, that is how pathetic our batting is...

That is my concern too.

I was hoping both Nauman Anwar & Fakhar Zaman play PSL and both outscore other openers and get selected. But one wasn't picked my anyone and other had a worst start to his campaign. Than I had hope that naveed Yasin scores , but he was sent at number 7.

So selectors may not pick Fakhar out of the PSL and Shehzad has stroked that 70 which he needed to raise his hand again.

In T20 cricket you need two batsman to score big and you get a decent score. With all the options we have I think if out of Hafeez , Shehzad , Malik , Babar , Umar two cannot score big than we don't need any extra batsman. If they can than don't expect keeper or tail to do there job.

With all the options in hand Our strongest suit could be spinners , spin allrounders , pacers and at last batsman. This is why I picked lots of spinners & spin allrounders in my squad and considering resources that is the best bet.

I think only 1 spinner & 1 spin bowling allrounder is way too less considering Malik & Afridi who aren't genuine allrounders.

yasir

Tanveer isn't handy with the bat. His batting is worked out by Int teams. His bowling has been poor in PSL. His strike rate as a bowler is very very poor.

Irfan's case is closed. 15 kph slower and lots of line length issues.

In T20 cricket you need pacers who can take wickets and be ecomical or those pacers who are slightly expensive but can buy you wickets when team is in dire need.

As per PSL matches undoubtedly best pacers have been Amir , Junaid , Wahab & Rumann.

I think these 4 would be selected. And should be selected too.

Batting is more like lottery, little chance that 2 out of 6 will fire, most of the time no one fires...

In bowling I am not sure about Rumann, he is another trundler, his fastest ball is 130, he is more like fast left arm spinner than a fast bowler.... Before PSL is over people will figure him out...

From other bowlers, my main concern is Yorkers, without that you cannot be successful in death...

I say that about Asghar as well re. pitches. They're conductive to spin and it's the right thing to take advantage of such conditions.

You aren't good enough for captain Afridi, coach Waqar , chief selector Haroon & Co selectors.

He went for only 15 runs in 2 overs on this flat wicket and small ground.

As usual Azhar clueless Ali did not bowl one of his better bowlers.

Best left-arm orthodox in the country. Selecting personifications of mediocrity like Imad ahead of him make no sense when you have the accomplished Nawaz in the team already.

Another baffling decision along with the selection of Iftikhar over Rizwan.

So far 2 wickets, 8 runs in 1.4 overs against karachi in a crunch game. Also got the important wickets of Shakib and Malik, 2 good players of spin. This too on a flat wicket. Special talent

we have too many spin options and all of them are young

don't think he will play for pakistan again

How's he doing these days? Anyone know?

Recovering from injury.

He's the biggest turner of the ball in Pakistan and a better a bowler than Asghar. He will play for Pakistan again, he's too good not to.

Looks like some improvements in his bowling these days.

Zafar Gohar has been drafted by Oval Invincibles in The Hundred Vitality Wildcard Draft. The Pakistani left-arm spinner joins the squad as one of the 32 players selected to complete the teams ahead of the tournament's fifth edition.
