ndia captain Virat Kohli played down concerns over Ajinkya Rahane's batting form, saying the India vice-captain will continue to be one of their most important Test batsmen alongside Cheteshwar Pujara. Kohli said the team management believes in Rahane's abilities and that the deputy captain is an "impact player".

Ajinkya Rahane stepped up as stand-in captain in Australia and hit a series-defining hundred in Melbourne but he has been inconsistent with the bat. 4, 22, 24, 37, 1, 0 have been his series of scores since that match-winning hundred in the 2nd Test against Australia in December 2020.

Rahane has also lacked consistency as a batsman in home Tests, especially under Virat Kohli's captaincy. Since his hundred against South Africa in October 2016, Rahane has managed just 779 runs at 29.96 in 18 matches with a single hundred and 6 fifty-plus scores under Kohli's leadership in India.

In India's 227-run defeat against England in Chennai, Rahane managed 1 run in the first innings before getting caught at cover in Dom Bess's bowling. In the 2nd innings, Rahane was dismissed for a third-ball duck when James Anderson got one to reverse swing.

India made 337 in the first innings and were bundled out for 192 in the second after England posted a mammoth first-innings total of 578 and followed it up with 178 in their 2nd innings.

'We believe in his abilities'

"Ajinkya Rahane is, I have said this many times in the past as well, along with Cheteshwar Pujara is our most important Test batsman and he is going to continue to be. We believe in his abilities, we have believed in his abilities for a long time now. He is an impact player," Kohli told the press on Tuesday.

"In the MCG Test, he stood up and scored a hundred for his team when we wanted it the most. You can look at the number of innings and what happens from there on, the reality of the situation is we won the series in Australia.

'And here, there is just one test, two innings. Today, yes, you can put that innings aside. In the first innings, he wanted to score a boundary. It was a brilliant catch by Joe Root that got rid of him. If that had gone for a boundary and he had scored runs, we are not having this conversation.

"There are absolutely no issues. Everyone is playing well, we need to execute better. Understand the conditions better, nothing is given in Test cricket and play well as a team. That's our focus."

India and England meet in the 2nd Test in Chennai from February 13. The hosts, who have slipped to the 4th spot in the World Test Championship standings, will be keen on bouncing back but there is only a 3-day turnaround time to regroup and work on their shortcomings against a spirited England side, who have won 6 of their last 6 matches in Asia

Is this some sort of reverse psychology on Kohli’s part? Make it seem like Rahane is in wretched form and is only making team due to backing and trust. And as a result totally kill off any talk of him being potentially a captain.

Kohli’s recent form (even despite this 70 odd yesterday) hardly inspires confidence either and I would put them in same boat in terms of form. Heck Rahane atleast scored a match winning century 3 test matches ago.

Nothing can be ruled out. :))

Probably a generic statement but you never know what power play is going on.

I think sth is definitely brewing.

Enough statements have been thrown around to say there’s no smoke without fire..

Even Cook was commenting on same.

I think since Rahane has given us arguably the greatest test series win of all-time, he is allowed to be the only player to play 50+ tests in the current Indian team even without averaging 45 as specialist batsman.

If Pujara would have averaged 42-43, he would have been dropped by now for sure.

I guess.....

If i am not wrong... Kohli has now blamed everyone and everything except himself:

Support spinners didnt create enough pressure.

Batsman didn't do their job.

SG Ball is bad.

WTC points are illogical.

-----

Not that there isnt merit in any of his points, but it feels like he sells everyone down the river.

Maybe i am reading too much into it but this has been pretty sub par leadership on and off the field.

Were they not using a reformulated SG ball for this Test series ? Apparently this version would behave more like the Dukes.

Yeah and its performing pretty badly right now.

The ball looks atrocious after 60 overs.

SG ball makers will be under pump.

They are saying that the balls are from the same batch as the 2019-20 season, when the ball was reformulated according to the team's demands in 2018.

The manufacturers would obviously blame the pitch, but Kohli and Ashwin have always been vocal critics of SG. I can't tell if there's a hidden motive due to any relationship with Kookaburra or Dukes.

On topic, this is a clever ploy by Kohli to put pressure on Rahane. He is not naive, and has always understood the politics involved to remain influential with the BCCI.

This one really made me laugh. Can't decide whether it's a compliment or a dig.

I doubt there is a hidden motive.

Ashwin has been complaining for ages now.

But I dunno the full story.

If only he had known Rahane....who ALWAYS plays out of his skin when his spot is on the line. :P

Right now, I feel like our batting is literally Gill, Pujara, Pant and Washi.

Very less confidence in Rohit, Kohli and Rahane.

Speaking from a gut feeling. Tho Kohli did pretty well today.

Hope we see the 2016 Kohli and the "about to be dropped" Rahane this series. :))

Regardless of what he feels personally...he did handle it well here.

Even if Kohli feels pangs of jealousy, it's natural.

He's just a human after all.

MSD winning everything.
Rohit winning IPL trophies.
Now Rahane winning probably the greatest test series there ever was.

Who wouldn't feel it?

It's how he responds to it that matters.

Hopefully there are no internal battles in the team.

If there are, a series loss against Eng can't be ruled out.

We need to bounce back at all costs.

Rahane seems like an Asad Shafiq type player. Very good technique and will play some amazing innings here and there but very inconsistent for Indian standards - a once in a series player.

I didn’t watch much but James has said that the ball is reversing beautifully, guess we are missing Umesh/Shami as well.

I’m honestly don’t like constant criticism of SG ball but if English can do it you should be able to as well.

Jimmy has become master of reverse though

Errrm, I think Kohli should be thinking maybe his spot as Captain will be on the line and Rahane taking over as CAP while he takes a demotion....

I thought the same. He’s a Shafiq with actual good technique
