Mike Hesson in a press conference after the defeat against India in the T20 World Cup 2026 in Colombo:

Q: Did Pakistan fail to handle the pressure of the India-Pakistan contest, especially in the batting department?

Mike Hesson: Initially, the ball was spinning quite a lot. Ishan Kishan’s play really took the game away from us. India probably got about 25 runs above par on that surface. From a batting standpoint, we didn’t give ourselves a chance to adjust to the conditions. When pressure is on, you have to trust your basics; today, the pressure made us go outside of that.

Q: Do batters "overthink" in these high-stakes games despite their experience?

Mike Hesson: I think they can. When you see a score that is above par, you feel like you have to play like "Superman" and take the game on earlier than the conditions allow. We lost wickets early to tough shots that might have worked on a quicker surface, but not here.

Q: Why was Usman Tariq held back so late in the innings?

Mike Hesson: Usman has a very specific role for us. While he could have bowled after the powerplay, Abrar Ahmed and Shadab Khan have been doing a great job for us in that phase over the last five wins. It didn't go their way tonight in terms of lengths, but I’d back those guys any day. I thought Usman was exceptional when he did come on.

Q: Whose decision was it to open the bowling with Salman Ali Agha?

Mike Hesson: We had planned that for about three days. We knew India would expect certain matchups with their left-handers, and we felt Agha bowling into the wicket while it was "tacky" would give us an advantage. He had been practicing with the new ball specifically for this.

Q: Was it a mistake to bowl first, similar to Australia’s recent loss to Zimbabwe?

Mike Hesson: Not at all. You have to look at the facts: the ball spun twice as much in the first innings as it did in the second. In the second innings, the ball actually skidded on. The decision to bowl was correct; the issue was the quality of our bowling in the first six overs and the poor options we took with the bat.

Q: What makes Ishan Kishan so challenging to bowl to?

Mike Hesson: He is fearless and can score on both sides of the ground. He isn't just a leg-side player; he can reverse-hit as well. He’s in a "rare vein of form" and his aggression forced our spinners away from their basics. Aside from him and Shivam Dube, no one else really scored better than a run-a-ball.

Q: Does a visit from the Board Chairman the day before a match add extra pressure?

Mike Hesson: No. The Chairman is a big supporter and he visits often before games. It’s part of his role and our guys know they are representing Pakistan. It doesn't add extra pressure.

Q: How do you keep the players emotionally stable for such a massive event?

Mike Hesson: We try to limit distractions and focus purely on the job. The reality is that it’s impossible to ignore the occasion completely, but in the dressing room tonight, we acknowledged it wasn't the occasion that beat us—it was our cricketing skill. We’ve won five on the bounce before this, so we just need to pick ourselves up for the next game in a few days.

Good analysis by Hesson of this one game, but he’s missing the big picture.

And the big picture is, why are Pakistan losing to India something like 9 out of 10 times?

Why does a an Indian player almost always turn up for India to win the game? Day before it was Kohli, yesterday Tilak and today Ishan. Why doesn’t a Pakistani player do the same for Pakistan?

We are all wasting our times, we will win the last game, everything will be forgiven and forgotten, onto Super 8, and then it goes on an on

Pressure talk is just non sense and If a player with 7/8 years of experience can’t handle pressure then he definitely doesn’t deserve a spot in the playing XI.

The real problem is the lack of skill and difference in the ability to execute whatever skill they have.

Why can't he be asked difficult questions:

Shaheen not bowling with discipline and letting the country down, Babar's batting form a big liability, Faheem's role in the team?

The spin, spin talk is making it sound that it's a group of school girls cheerleading for an imaginative warrior.

Not sure why there are 6 spinners. LOL. That's an overkill.

If M Nawaz is playing, there is no need for Shadab as both have similar roles. Even Saim and Agha have similar roles.

Shadab should be replaced with a proper batter in my opinion.

For Hesson to say Ishan isnt just a legside player is poor. He has weakeness outside off and bounce. It was very poor for Pak bowlers dishing freebies on the legside early on. Hesson has been in the IPL and should know basic things.

I would say, cut your nonsense. Your players under your coaching have no sense of: how to pitch the ball and how to pace it on what surface.

While you have no sense of who to pick on what surface, and have been playing musical chair with the batting order to no end. But this kind a nonsense is expected from a coach representing an extremely nonsense board.

The point about pressure would make sense except if you see the youngest/newest guys like both usmans and saim bowling did the best. So they could handle pressure but super experienced Shaheen Babar shadab cant ???

Please learn that its time to move on from players playing just based on their past history, or fan following.

I wouldn't mind losing but with all young guns instead.

Also, there had to be limit to number of all rounders maybe ICC should do something. 8 bowlers I mean that is crazy. Even NZ probably didnt ever do this.

Pakistan gave away 25 runs too many. Shaheen gave away 30+ in 2 overs. Abrar gave away 38 runs in 3 overs. Shadab also gave away 12+ in 1 over.

Those were decisive.

Just 25 ? I mean the final margin was 61 despite Bumrah bowling only 2overs and we bowled a whole bunch of part timers to help their runrate :ROFLMAO:

this pressure stuff from him doesnt make sense to me
anyways, what he can do with minimum resources and not 100% authority where he is always forced to choose Babar

I didnt see one ball in the match neither bothered with highlights so is the above correct then ball spun twice as much in the first innings so how on earth did they make 180 must be damn good

Shaheen Eagle gave 31 runs in 2 overs. Captaincy was super defensive too, the supposed 'mystery' spinner Usman was introduced in the 11th over.

Overall the analysis is ok.

The gap is too big between the teams so I don't think toss etc ultimately would have made a difference.

Still it's bad thinking.

The other thing is the one dimensional approach. Ok you budgeted that Usman will bowl after X overs. But when Ishan took the game away surely it's time to rethink a little bit.

When there is a signficant skills gap you need eveyrthing going in your favour and Pakistan needed everything to line up so they could do their cookie cutter approach of bowling this bowler after X overs and this bowler after Y. Agha will bowl first over and then this will happen and that will happen in a pre-defined plan.

Abrar was taken apart and the plan fell apart. but Agha still ran the plan to the end. Including not bowling Faheem.

Maybe, just maybe, India are like two tiers above Pakistan as a team and we have no one gifted enough to replicate what someone like Ishan did.

We haven’t produced a world class cricketer since Shaheen Afridi. Do you know how insane that is for a country who plays one sport lol? It’s been 8 years since Shaheen made his debut mind you

Should have asked him why they aren't playing enough spin-all rounders?

Missed a trick by not playing a couple more.

Hesson, you couldn’t figure out that you didn’t need 8 bowling options to complete 20 overs?

Hesson is a con artist. He is the guy who keeps posting useless stats like 15 wins out of 18 or whatever on social media which simple fans like @TheSultan lap up and do bhangra without mentioning that 3 losses were against India and wins were against UAE and Afghanistan and Uganda. Same is true for Farhan's entire career.

Ball turned more during 1st innings. Yes.

Shaheen, Abrar, and Shadab bowled poorly. They gave away 85 runs in 6 overs approximately. That was decisive.

It's amazing how Pakistan make these legendary coaches - Gary Kirsten, Dav Whatmore, Mike Hesson - look so ordinary.

Faheem went for 8.5 cores? I mean given he is the reason why Pakistan is still in this world cup but cmon he's played his one innings for the next ten years either bowl as well or get out. If Fakhar plays send him one down. Agha at 3 is only workable when an opener falls within power play and fakhar is better suited to bat in the power play than Salman anyway even though both are utter crap
