So 20 overs will need to be bowled by spinners? If the conditions are overcast, it might not be ideal.

Also, hasn’t Afridi been your best bowler lately. He should have started before Wahab.
 
Drop Imad and keep both Haris and Asif.

Haris can and Hafeez can easily share Imad's overs.

I would have kept Malik over Haris.

WI is a powerhouse and if we get a flat pitch there is no way in hell Babar and Haris chase down a 350+ target with their SRs and power shot capabilities.

I guess we will see!

I just don't rate his power hitting. If WI put 350+ on the board and we have Babar and Haris at the crease, I can put my house on them two on not being able to chase the total down.
 
Whoa.. no Afridi and no malik.. I think that’s a great squad. I would drop Imad.. because WI will play him like a medium pacer and destroy him. Also he will be a bunny for short stuff that cottrell, roach, Gabriel who all have pace will be dishing out. I think with Hafeez and Shadab we can manage the bowling. Harris and asif are better players if pace than Imad.

But I also know they won’t drop imad and asif will probably sit out. Which will be a mistake because asif can really do well against their pacers. He likes it when the ball comes on to the bat.
 
Hafeez will be picked over Haris as apparently he is successful in getting Gayle out. I have a feeling windies will massacre pak bowlers

Fakhar - fast start
Imam - consolidate
Baber - partnership building
Sarfaraz - counter punching
Asif Ali - wreck havoc
Imad - all rounder
Shadab - Main spinner
Amir - keep down runs
Wahab - aim at the stumps
 
They are probably banking heavily on Imad and Hafeez to restrict the booming west indian batsmen. Suspect both or one of these guys will definitely be bowling in the first ten overs.
 
Need to focus on picking wickets. If Sarfraz goes for his usual containing runs tactic, it'll backfire and we are looking at heavy damage.

Amir, Hasan and Wahab is a good enough pace bowling attack to trouble the Windies, along with Shadab and Imad as the spinners.

Haris sits out for me.
 
I think one of Shadab or Imad will not play. Looks a pretty decent team with enough batting depth to get us to a good score.
 
pathetic choice not to back Shaheen, seems like they will certainly bowl spin from the other end be it Imad or Hafeez.

axing Malik was a fair choice.

Bhai jaan Shaheen has been in atrocious form. He has not gone for less than 8 rpo in any of his previous 5 one day matches. It is good decision to leave him out for the opener.

which pacer has shown anything on this tour so far? all have been hammered, 2 were so bad they even got dropped from the WC squad itself.

I would rather back the guy who performed vs NZ and in SA than Wahab who is making a comeback from nowhere.

In an ideal world, I would too, but even in that warm up where Wahab and Shaheen played together Wahab thoroughly out-bowled Shaheen.

We need to go by recent performances and by recent performances Shaheen has been getting smashed consistently.

Pleased with this 12 probables. Should stick with these 12 throughout the wc' unless one of pacers, messes up big time, then you can try hasnain. No need for malik or shaheen in this wc.
I guess for the WI game its a choice between asif and haris. I would try asif, if he fails then haris can have a go.
Alternatively, out of the box - drop hasan ali and go with 2 pacers and spin from imad, shadab, hafeez and haris. Sounds crazy, but WI are poor against spin and it would give pak a crazy batting line up. With the instructions to batsman to play aggressively and at a high sr.

And it's the right decision.
Look at how many left handers there are in the west indian lineup and look at Hafeez's record against left handers.
Imad with the new ball could possibly get Lewis and Gayle.
Nothing to lose.
 
Glad that Shaheen is not there. Not greatly disappointed to see Hasnain missing but would have liked to see Shoaib. His experience in the middle order will be missed if the match gets tight.
 
This squad is actually better than my expectations.
I never thought they would have the courage to drop Malik.

I am afraid that Shaheen might be down in the dumps though.He has bowled inconsistently in this tour but cant discard him so quickly.

he bowled very well at the death after initially getting smashed in his first spell.

the issue is who takes the new ball alongside Amir, neither Wahab or Hassan prefer to do so.
 
Bit bottle to drop Malik but with overcast conditions and this dynamic west Indies team its best to trust a top 4 with sarfraz, middle order with Hafeez, asif, Imad, Shadab. Hasan, Amir, Wahab tomorrow shall show. Amir and Imad open bowling Amir takes our Gayle and Hope and Shadab spins the tailender out. If we bat first look to score 300 plus n we still win. I see us winning our 1st 3 games which will be essential
 
Great desicion!!!

Finally we have had the courage to drop a senior player like Shoaib Malik for someone better.

Hard on Shaheen, but his bowling form was pretty poor and could have been a big risk against WI power hitters. That being said, we can expect Wahab Riaz to still bowl even poorer and be taken apart for 100+ runs.

Hetmyer and Hope are amazing.

Pooran if he plays murders spinners.

I would back Amir and Riaz more than just spinners in a slugfest.
 
Got to feel for shaheen, I still feel he’s much better than both Amir and Wahab but probably sitting out and relaxing a little bit might actually help him

Riaz is as awful as it can get in a slog fest

I would open the bowling with Hafeez for 2 overs (more if he picks a wicket) and Amir at the other end

They kinda do.
Wi have lost a lot of matches and the first excuse has been "Gayle wasn't playing".
If Gayle hadn't played so well against eng I don't think wi would have won 2 matches.

Windies have 4 lefties in top 5. This will be their top 5.

Hafeez gives control in the middle overs... sneaking 10 overs of economical overs that pass by quickly allowing captain to get a stranglehold on the game with an attacking bowler in Hasan or Shadab at the other end. That was the winning formula for CT.


If we are going to open with a spinner I would like it to be Imad.
 
We are yet to see this bowling formation. In our last couple of series we have not had full 50 over from these 5. Especially with Wahab and Amir experience I see Pakistan. Prospering, its going to be a great game hopefully with Pakistan ticking all boxes. Need 100% commitment, execution and a good start and build blocks.

I think it might just be wise to put Haris in. If I recall correctly last year's WC he looked more than a gem. The Babar + Haris hopefully becomes our backbone this world Cup.

The tournament is quite long, he will get many opportunities.

He is not that effective anymore.
 
The one positive I draw from here is that they understand that you can play two mediocre 40 year olds at the same time.
As a few have mentioned above, hafeez should enjoy bowling to the line up. having said that, what sticks with me is hafeez's dismissal in the game he got a fifty against england; he was bounced out.

My hunch is, if it’s a sunny day, PAK might go with one additional batsman & one pacer less. I believe in last 2 ODI (ENG), one additional batsman was used and it almost worked - without Imam’s finishing, PAK could have won the 4th ODI with one make shift bowler. On gloomy day, don’t know, may be still one extra batsman, but don’t know whom to drop - may be Wahab, doesn’t look useful unless it’s dry conditions.
 
People overestimating Asif. He is basically just a slogger, although he has improved his game recently but I would prefer a proper batsman over him like Haris. Asif st best would give you a quick 50, but Haris could score 100 at good rate. They both terrible fielders, with Asif having done more blunders in recent series, some could be excused for the tragedy he was going through.
 
Inzamam has left the team with no choice whatta biased joker. What is the need to keep Malik why not replace him with Abid who is still in UK on stand by?

Can't count on Asif or Sohail.

There are only 5 bats in the squad. Hafeez and Malik can't even be counted with all rounders.

What exactly has abid ali done at int level? Played 3 games - scored 1 hundred and 2 fails(including a duck). Yeah, real wc material!

I agree. Asif has potential but I would go with Haris. I will always take an aggressive Haris over a conservative Asif. We will need batsmen who can bat the whole 50 overs.
 
Wow brave decision to drop malik but glad they have done that

Id leave out asif as hes still hit and miss Play harris and bat deep with everyone expected to score a min of run a ball

Spin with hafeez imad and shadab key to restricting and strangling the wi
 
Will be great if they can drop imad as well. I have a bad feeling about him opening the bowling.. they should open with amir and Hafeez and let professor deliver a lesson on the WI to order. :)
 
In terms of bowling I think we have gone with the best combo considering the form and also all 3 pacers bring in some experience.

In batting I think if wicket and conditions are easy Asif Ali should play over Haris however if there is even a little something for the bowlers Haris is the way to go.

How Sarfaraz uses his bowlers especially his spinners, will be the key in the result of the match.

Still better than middle order batsman(Shoaib Malik) of 17 years career with average of 14 in UK.

Agree, the captain and coach are spineless and are a perfect example of recency bias. Khair, luckily its the first match.
 
I don't know what kind of mental state Asif Ali is in he is coming back from a massive tragedy. I think he needs to be rested for tomorrow.
 
Every time Wahab plays I have the same nervousness that I have when Shinwari plays: he will either go for a 100 runs or maybe 5-fer. Nothing in between.
 
I cant figure out what line up they will be playing tomorrow.

First of all, lets stop crying about the left out players

now, the players that have been selected. Pakistan will play all 3 pacers, the confusion is on the spinners

If Pakistan plays both Imad and Shadab, then there is no need to play Hafeez. He should be left out. If one of imad or shadab is played, then hafeez is needed along with Haris aswell to share overs for the 5th quota

But i think both Imad and Shadab will play. The sacrificial goat will most probably be Harris Sohail.

Because either Malik and Hafeez are confirmed in the line up, and if one doesnt play the other will be added due to experience, Plus malik performed against the Afghans and if he is not playing then Hafeez will be.

My bet is Haris will be left out.
 
If Windies click on this flat and small Trent Bridge wicket, we could be in for a right hammering
