Sri Lanka, who won the toss and batted, reached 227-4 at stumps on the opening day of the first Test against Pakistan in Abu Dhabi on Thursday.

Opener Dimuth Karunaratne led his his team to recovery with 93 and added 100 for the fourth wicket with skipper Dinesh Chandimal (60) to lift their team from a precarious 61-3 at lunch.

Niroshan Dickwella was unbeaten on 42.

Pakistan had the advantage in the first session as Leg-spinner Yasir Shah grabbed two wickets to leave Sri Lanka struggling at 61-3 at lunch.

Shah dismissed Kusal Mendis for 10 in the last over before the interval after earlier removing opener Kaushal Silva for 12 to kick-start Pakistan on a greenish wicket at Sheikh Zayed Stadium.

Karunaratne had a solid opening stand of 34 with Kaushal Silva before paceman Hasan Ali provided Pakistan with the breakthrough.

Silva had helped his fellow opener build a cautious start of 34 as Pakistan's fast bowlers failed to get any assistance from the pitch.

The two-hour session saw only two boundaries as Pakistan, who entered the Test with three pace bowlers and one frontline spinner in Shah, pressed for wickets in the second hour.

It was seamer Hasan Ali who gave Pakistan the breakthrough when Silva misjudged an incoming delivery and played on after scoring 12.

Left-hander Lahiru Thirimanne, playing his first Test after a 15-month break, became Shah's 150th Test wicket as he missed a full-length delivery and was trapped leg-before without scoring.

Shah joins fellow countryman Waqar Younis as the joint second fastest to 150 wickets — both achieving the milestone in their 27th Test. Australia's Sydney Barnes holds the record after reaching 150 wickets in 24 Tests.

Shah then had Mendis caught by keeper Sarfraz Ahmed on the stroke of lunch to give Pakistan an ideal first session.

The Test is Pakistan's first without ace batsman Younis Khan and their most successful Test skipper, Misbah-ul-Haq, who retired in May.

Pakistan handed a Test cap to batsman Haris Sohail, while Sri Lanka, who won the toss and opted to bat, went into the game with three spinners and two seamers.

English umpire Ian Gould became an early morning casualty as the 60-year-old suffered an upset stomach and was replaced by his fellow countryman Richard Kettleborough, originally the television umpire.

Pakistan's Ahsan Raza is now the television umpire and can be replaced by Gould in the TV room if he recovers by Friday morning.

SL read the conditions better and have a balance of 6-5 where as Pakistan even if they go with 11 batsmen would still struggle to put up a decent score.

Even 1st days play. SL slow scoring means they havent got away from pakistan here. However we need to be making sure we get them out for less than 350 and then need to bat well as wicket is generally best for batting here on days 2 & 3.

Very disappointed with sarfaraz's poor use of reviews! he needs to learn and learn fast!

going to be a draw, this sri lankan side shouldve been steam rolled, whos idea was it to choose just 1 spinner on this track? replace amir and ali.

A brave new era this was not.

I've strongly backed Arthur and Sarfraz but they have messed up on multiple fronts here. Firstly the selection of walking wicket Shan Masood and displacing Azhar Ali from the opening position where he's had a golden run of form in tough away tours.

Then, seemingly encouraged by the grass on the pitch, deciding to select three pacers and just one spinner. The grass however is only there to hold the pitch together, its not going to offer any assistance in the blazing sunshine in Abu Dhabi, its a dry surface that'll break up and we needed 2 spinners to exploit that.

Abbas is not suited to these conditions, he should be bowling with the Dukes ball in places like England, West Indies and New Zealand NOT the UAE with the Kookaburra. His average pace was 129kph today which isn't going to trouble anyone on this flat deck. Amir's also looked toothless with the Kookaburra since his return to Tests.

I wasn't happy with the fielding either. Hasan Ali was sloppy and Yasir Shah seemed unfit. Sarfraz was visibly disappointed at times.

Need to step it up tomorrow.

I am surprised Lankans are not all out on Day-1. A great achievement for them to lose only 4 wickets at the end of the days play.

I still doubt Lankans would score over 300 against this Pak attack with Amir/Yasir/Hasan.

Didn't SL just recently score 380+ on the last days of a test match against the number 1 test team in the world? So why is it so shocking that they are only four down on a flat day 1 track?

one of the dullest days of cricket I've seen

this is exactly what is wrong with test cricket - abysmal crowds, dead pitches, slow batting, lackluster bowling...

here's hoping the test can be a little more exciting going forward

That's the UAE for you.

And playing against Sri Lanka, probably one of the worse teams you want to play in terms of attracting a crowd, wouldn't be surprised if 0 people were there.

Lankans got badly destroyed in the Test series. India were scoring 500 for fun and Lankans were struggling to eek out 250.

Sure but they did score nearly 400 in the last innings of the 2nd test. So my point being it's not shocking to see them score a few runs.

The ball is turning for spinners but pak team picked a single spinner which is very very strange.

The team is playing in damn uae and not a green mamba in England, nz or sa

Zero wickets for Pakistani bowlers after lunch. This team would be massacred by Pujara/Vijay/Rahane/Kohli/Rahul/Pandya in a Test that will never be played.

India won that game by an innings and 53 runs. The game ended at the midpoint of day 4, I don't think Indians were trying all that hard.

I think, PAK still will win the Test - may not be by innings, but comfortably. SRL isn't that good a side these days to bail out draws.

In an even contest, I don't see any result in 5 Day Test here - apart from the wicket, the outfield is so slow on a large ground that teams can't score fast even from advantage. It's a painstaking slow venue.

Abu Dhabi is the worst cricket ground to play cricket on. The pitch is so dead and the outfield so grassy that apart from swing for 5 overs at the start, you get absolutely nothing.

Indian bowlers wouldn't be able to get a single wicket at Abu Dhabi in a Test that will never be played. :ashwin

I'm seeing talk of bowlers aren't suited to these conditions, they're unfit, crap selection, wrong batting order, can't field, coach is useless, the list goes on...

I miss one day of test cricket and everything falls apart :mv
