2020 Democratic Party presidential candidates [Bernie Sanders drops out Update#741]

Warren should now do the right thing and drop out and endorse Bernie, to consolidate the progressive vote.

Warren is only staying in to split the vote in California and cut Bernie's lead. She doesn't care about the progressive cause.

Sanders is leading in Texas right now, already won Vermont and Colorado as expected. Biden picked up Alabama.

Not looking good so far for Bernie. Massachustus and Minnesota so far are not going in favor of Bernie. Need big wins in Texas and California, and hopefully end results in Massachustus and Minnesota will be in Bernie's favor.

Warren is trailing in Massachusetts of all places. Also Bloomberg isn’t doing too badly, which means he’s probably cutting into Biden’s votes.

In other news, the RSS woman came second in Samoa. Impressive. Not.

Biden is winning. Congratulations to Trump in advance.

Not really. This super tuesday result seems like it's going to end in a tie between Bernie and Biden, all that means that this nomination will be neck and neck like the Obama-Hillary battle in 2008. Warren and Bloomberg are done.

She's from neighboring Hawaii and is part Samoan, Polynesians support their kin.

Sanders is dominating Colorado and suprisingly Bloomberg is a distant second, Biden is no where near. Western states in America are known as the frontier and go against the tide.

Well I do hope Bernie wins California and Texas. If he subsequently wins in New York it’s going to make things interesting.

Poor Liz isn’t even meeting the threshold to revive delegates in most states. I suspect she’ll be dropping out tomorrow, and I hope she has the decency to endorse Bernie.

She burned that bridge when she played sexist card on Bernie.

Cannot believe the low standard of Candidates from both parties this year. Trump and Biden unbelievable.

There really aren’t any burnt bridges in politics. It could happen.

Bernie might not hold any grudges, but voters don't forget. Bernie was able to build grassroots support due to his consistency and policies that are beneficial to the working class. Elizabeth has backtracked on most of her progressive policies during this campaign, and going forward it will be hard to get progressives back on her side.

AP called it as soon as polls closed. Must be a big margin of victory for Bernie.

Bernie won Utah and California lol, Texas is so close right now. I don't understand the wrist-slitters, this race isn't over.

It seems like the centrist democratic electorate is easily manipulated and largely stupid. Biden, the guy who wrote the crime bill, was leading the Iraq war efforts, who wrote the bankruptcy bill, is by far the most popular among African Americans, the same people the complain about economic issues. The same economic issues that Biden helped create and will help in continuing. The whole electability argument is so idiotic, Biden can barely complete a single sentence without a blooper if not reading from a teleprompter. Not to mention, Biden's record is something Trump can hammer on constantly, which he can't with Bernie.

Aaand Biden's back in the game! I came to this country to make $$$, ain't going to pray for some red socialist to come in and take away my $.

Joe Biden has won eight of the 14 states that voted to pick a Democratic White House candidate on Super Tuesday, a remarkable rebound for his campaign.

The ex-US vice-president has swept Massachusetts, Minnesota, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Alabama, Tennessee, North Carolina and Virginia.

But Bernie Sanders is being projected to win the biggest prize of the night, California, and three other states.

They lead the race to face Republican President Donald Trump in November.

All the latest results
Michael Bloomberg spent more than half a billion dollars of his own money, but did not win a single state.

How important is Biden's performance?
Virginia and North Carolina are crucial because they are key swing states in the 2020 election.

Exit poll data across the board suggests Mr Biden has won large majorities of African-American voters, a crucial bloc for the Democratic party.

Mr Biden also appears to have won convincingly among the type of suburban voters who pollsters say have been turning away from the current US president.

"We are very much alive," Mr Biden told a crowd in Los Angeles. "Make no mistake about it, this campaign will send Donald Trump packing."

If Mr Sanders does win California, as the Associated Press news agency projects, he will pick up the lion's share of the whopping 415 delegates that the Golden State sends to the party convention.

Super Tuesday awards more than 1,300 of the 1,991 delegates needed to clinch the Democratic White House nomination.

The left-wing senator also won his home state of Vermont, along with Colorado and Utah.

All eyes now are on the second biggest voting state of the night, Texas.

Mr Sanders had been heavily favoured to win the Lone Star State, but it is currently too close to call between him and Mr Biden.

Partial results from Maine's primary also show Mr Sanders and Mr Biden neck and neck.

In a victory speech, Mr Sanders lambasted Mr Trump, but also took a shot at Mr Biden.

"We're taking on the political establishment," he said. "You cannot beat Trump with the same-old, same-old kind of politics."

I plan to move to Canada when it's time to raise a family. This country is not for raising kids. Just need to pile on $ while I'm here.

Doesn't bother me - I plan to move to Canada when it's time to raise a family. This country is not for raising kids. Just need to pile on $ while I'm here. I should be clear - I don't get a vote, but I do care who gets elected since I'm living here for now.

So you're admitting you don't care about Americans, all you care about is making money at the expense of Americans and their wellbeing. You want to profit off of America and then take your money to Canada so you can "raise a family" in a welfare state that you believe Americans don't deserve. You're kuku.

I'm just acting in self-interest?

Are you trying to imply that only Indians act in self-interest? What about the rich non-Indian Americans who would also never vote for Bernie or Warren?

Some cultures kinda give themselves away. Lol you just fit the stereotype, that's all.

I'll admit that the healthcare and education system in your country needs a massive fixing. I grew up in Canada and I can't even imagine trying to raise a family here unless a household brings in $300K+.

Keeping my self-interest aside, I think you all will be better off in the long run by fixing healthcare and education. Problem is even today Bernie or Warren's ideas don't buy majority support by Americans, who are (supposedly?) thinking and acting in their own self-interest.

They are voting for Biden because they think he can beat Trump (which in itself is an idiotic conclusion to reach to) but they largely agree with Bernie's ideas. The exit polls show large support for Bernie's ideas. Mind you, if the US mainstream media covered Bernie's ideas fairly and objectively, they'd be even more popular. But given how much the media continues to bash his ideas, and that they are still so popular, speaks volumes.

You know, I am mostly disappointed in African Americans, the older ones at least. They're the ones that resurrected Biden's campaign and gave him the wins today. As I said earlier, these are the same people who would complain about the social and economic issues that the black community faces, a lot of which are a direct responsibility of Biden because he wrote those bills. He's a status quo politician who will do jack s*it for them.

They feel comfortable with him because of his association with Obama, who appointed Biden as VP to appeal to white voters. Imagine the irony there. Obama himself didn't do much for black people, because of his affinity to big donors and corporations.

It seems like most people voted for Biden because they thought he'd be the best to beat Trump. To me, that's asinine and backwards, given he can't complete a sentence coherently and has a record that Trump can easily attack. Biden would look like a school kid in front of Trump. This entire electability argument against Sanders is a media and establishment creation, since if anything it should work in Sanders' favour. I saw a lot of Americans living in Canada because they thought the US public was too far gone to work in their own interests and instead easily get manipulated by big money and its influence. I didn't understand it at the time but now I can see it.

Yes, sadly they think Biden is Obama's guy even thought Obama didn't do much for minorities anyways.

While I'm no fan of Biden, I think people who say he can't "complete a sentence coherently" aren't aware that Biden has a speech impediment, ableism aside - I don't think people should vote for him cause of his policies and track record.

To me, it appears Obama turned out to be a trojan horse for the US progressive moment. He ran as a progressive, and when it came time to govern he was fully in the pockets of the very wealthy and corporations. Got nothing done in 8 years and gave us Trump by getting nothing done. And is now actively pulling strings to make sure Bernie doesn't get elected. The events of the few days before super Tuesday was just Obama pulling to make sure Bernie doesn't get elected. For me this entire theatrics have ruined Obama's legacy and I hope other progressives realize that too.

The American headlines this morning are all about how Biden's performance was "shocking" and "unbelievable". But I do not think it was either shocking or unbelievable to anyone who learned the key lesson from the last election, which is that American "polls" have zero credibility.

I’m almost hoping there’s some Hunter Biden/Burisma bombshell that emerges soon, forcing his withdrawal. Better now than in the last week of October with him being the nominee.

I guess another 4 years of Trump it is then... Creepy uncle Biden ain't gonna cut it .

Told you Bernie hasn’t convinced all Dems he is the man.

Let’s not lose hope entirely.. Biden is scrapper but this is far from over. A win in CA may turn Bernie’s campaign around

Surprise surprise, simply repeating the same message over and again without making any attempt to expand your core base, labelling anyone who disagrees with you a corporate sellout, has led to a poor showing for Sanders. So who's to blame for this one ? The MSM ? The DNC ? Israeli Gov ? At some point the excuses wear thin.

I am totally for Sanders's policy programme - he is a centre left European social democrat, and a New Deal Democrat. Sadly in the corporate fascist state that is America, that possesses some of the most misinformed and clueless voters in the industrialised world, that's had anti-government rhetoric injected into the political bloodstream for decades - the political spectrum is so far to the right that Sanders is seen as a wide-eyed communist.

What some leftists in the Democratic Party don't understand is that the Democrats have always been a diverse coalition ranging from blue collar working class voters, suburban middle class liberals, graduates, women, minorities, LGBT voters, centrists, social democrats and democratic socialists. Pre-1964 you could've added Southern Segregationists. In order to win an election, not only must you hold onto this coalition - but attract independents and some moderate Republicans too. Many of these don't support a form of coffee house, leftie YouTuber Woke Socialism, and just want a quiet life.

That's how Democrats scored a crushing victory in the House in 2018 with even some traditional GOP held districts flipping blue, and how Obama won a landslide in 2008 when he won 20% of self-identified conservatives. Most of the 2018 Democratic intake were moderates not Berniecrats.

Despite more Democratic voters wanting to build on the ACA and support a public option over single payer, Sanders pledges to abolish private health insurance though Medicare For All has no chance of passing Congress even with a blue Senate (Joe Manchin, Krysten Sinema and others will make sure of it.

Despite many voters over the age of 40, wrongly, associate socialism with the worst excesses of the USSR, Sanders doubles down on calling himself a democratic socialist.

Whilst most Americans oppose Trump's barbaric border policies, including family separation, they do not support abolishing ICE like the pro-Sanders "Squad" such as AOC and others do.

Whilst Obama DID betray his promises of political reform and watered down too many policies to please corporate donors - how's it politically savvy to attack a guy with an approval rating of over 90% amongst Democrats, and 99% among black Democrats (whose votes Sanders sorely needs) ?

Why double down on your Cuba comments (yes I know Obama also praised Cuba's education system) when many Floridians of Cuban descent despise Castro and live in a swing state ?

Sanders is a great guy and on foreign policy he smacks every other candidate for six. However America simply will not vote for a revolution. How ironic for a country founded on revolution.

warren needs to get out and support bernie. otherwise its biden and trump wins

Tbh, there is no guarantee that Bernie beats Trump although he’s the only Dem who stands a chance against Trump.

Centrism is a very unpopular political position in 2020. Right-wing populism and Left-wing populism are the only two really attractive ideologies in today’s age.

The left have never won an election. Populist leftism and populist right both lose

I did not say bernie beats trump. but i think he is a better chance. If i was a betting man i would say trump has this election in his back pocket. Imagine how he will act come 2021

I agree , I may have been in the the young people echo chamber a little to much .

Great summary man , All is not lost but sanders will need to ease up a little if he wants the nomination . The demns will fall in line and vote blue , its the independents that need to be won over .

Looks like Biden may just win the nomination. I actually predicted it a few months ago. Some people here actually thought Bloomberg and Warren were going to win.

It was always going to be either Biden or Bernie. Biden is more experienced and he will likely get the nomination due to having more support from the super-delegates.

I expect Biden to win the Democratic nomination and defeat Donald Trump. You can bookmark this post.

Told you guys, America is not ready for Bernie.

Just accept it and move on.

Told you guys, America is not ready for Bernie.

Just accept it and move on.

That would be true if both the candidates were portrayed fairly by the media. However, media gives free positive publicity to one of the candidates and lies, misleads, misinforms, ask right-wing framed questions in the other case. If they were working on a level playing field then I'd understand. But they're not.

Then they should get ready for another 4 years of Trump. There is no way Biden will beat trump.

I actually think Biden can beat Trump.

Bernie has a label on him. People think he is a hardcore socialist. Americans generally view socialism as a bad thing.

I am a Bernie fan but I always knew Biden was probably going to beat him.

Would you be happy with Biden over Bernie as a muslim?

It'll be a miracle if Sanders gets through.
Biden is far ahead right now

Well I would take Biden over trump but hopefully Bernie can still turn this around.

I am not American so not sure how the primary works or how much is left. Does anyone here know if Bernie still has a realistic chance of winning?

I would say no. Bernie needed to do well during Super Tuesday and he failed.

Biden should get the nomination thanks to super-delegates.

What is impressive is Biden didn't even try, he did not step one foot in either of Southern states that voted (if not any of the states this Tuesday) and absolutely crushed the opposition.

The tragic irony is these southern states would probably most benefit from Sanders policies and also have a sizable black population whom Biden has done no favours too in his political career as compared to Bernie. Icing on the cake is these same states will be unwavering red come November.

I have a theory that as of now all the states that Biden has won in primaries will be lost to Republicans come November.

Yeah his "electability" will be of no use if he can't win the swing states and the formerly reliable blue states of wisconsin and michigan.

Yes; I believe Trump will win again.

After a crisis (coronavirus and its shockwaves through the economic sector will become more prevalent), the public stands firm behind the incumbent.

Nothing is in the way of another 4 years of trump unless a major scandal breakouts right before election ala Comey reopening hillary's email investigation .

Biden reminds of deer in front of headlights. He will probably completely melt in front of Trump and fall apart.

Bloomberg apparently spent $560-million on ads. What was he thinking?

He shouldn't have run in the first place. He never had any chance.

Perhaps it was never his idea to run for himself in the first place.

Like Perot doing Clinton a solid in 92’ by taking votes away from Bush Sr.

A conspiracy but food for thought.

Who was he trying to stop? Biden?

$560-million down the drain literally.

Also, those days of ad purchase are over. Candidates now have to win with charisma.

He thought he could win, as he had previously had electoral success in NYC. His calculation was that non-stop ads on TV could buy him the elections.

As for spending $560 million, he was previously worth $62 billion. Do you think it makes a difference to him now that he is worth $61.44 billion?

Money is not the point, what he probably didn't realize before he got in was the amount he would get insulted and the hit his reputation would take. He is now famous as "Mini Mike", and his insulting comments about blacks, latinos and women has been given wide publicity. Maybe he doesn't care, certainly he remains wealthy enough to choose any lifestyle he wants other than a powerful elected office.

Man this is depressing, I don't understand why Southern African Americans are so keen on Biden despite the fact that they are the ones who stand to gain the most from Bernie. On top of that, how do they not see Biden's awful record on racial justice?
