Babar?....

Brook already surpassed Shafique

Who would you select instead of Babar?

Brook had 1 good series...I feel like the sample size is too small with just 4 matches if we go with past years

Brook made a bigger impact across two series in Tests & T20Is than timid Shafiq did across multiple series. No way he is losing out to Shafiq.

Babar had had a rubbish year in T20Is & achieved nothing but humiliation in Test format, but I agree he is the front runner for the cricketer of the year which shows this wasn’t a great year as far as individual performances across formats are concerned.

Iyer for ODI cricketer of the year.

Babar for Cricketer of the Year and ODI Cricketer of the Year. Bairstow for Test Cricketer of the Year. Brook for Emerging Player of the year. Surya for T20 Player of the Year.

Tests - Bairstow
ODIs - Babar
T20Is - SKY
Emerging - Harry Brooks

Could Babar Azam be a candidate for an award?

Two left-arm quicks and a pair of openers are the four men in the running to take out the ICC Men’s Emerging Cricketer of the Year award for 2022. We take a look at their respective breakout years.

Marco Jansen - South Africa

36 Test wickets at 19.02, 229 runs at 22.90 (correct at time of publication)

Two ODI wickets, one T20I wicket

The year that was

Just when we thought South Africa’s bowling attack could not be strengthened, up stepped a 206cm left-arm quick who made an impression of his own.

Jansen’s first nine* Test matches (*including Boxing Day in Australia) have turned heads in the cricket world, and moments with the white ball show there will be little respite for batting line-ups no matter the format.

After a strong Test debut on home soil on Boxing Day 2021, Jansen continued to trouble his opponents no matter where he travelled in 2022. Taking 14 Test wickets in the calendar year in South Africa at just 13.50, Jansen emulated the success on tour in England and Australia, averaging just 13.11 and 13.33 respectively. His nine Test wickets in New Zealand came at a respectable 28.55 to boot, as he contributed with the bat for Dean Elgar’s side.

Jansen made four appearances for South Africa across the two white-ball formats, showing early glimpses of his quality. He claimed Shreyas Iyer in his only T20I, and a pair of wickets in an ODI against Bangladesh.

Memorable performance

Making 30 with the bat in South Africa’s paltry 118 at The Oval, Jansen brought his form into the bowling performance, finishing with a maiden five-wicket haul on a surface historically good for batting.

Jansen made a mess of Alex Lees stumps to start the run, before trapping Zak Crawley plumb lbw in an early double-strike. He claimed Joe Root and Harry Brook when he returned to the bowling crease, before dismissing Ben Foakes for his fifth.

He finished with 5/35 as South Africa hit back in the match, bowling England out for just 158.

Ibrahim Zadran - Afghanistan

431 ODI runs at 71.83, strike rate 88.31
367 T20I runs at 36.70, strike rate 109.55

The year that was

Afghanistan made huge strides in the One Day International game in particular thanks to Ibrahim Zadran’s work, making a number of vital contributions, on top of showing his mettle in the shortest format.

The country’s automatic qualification for the Cricket World Cup came with the help of 431 runs in seven ODIs opening the batting, making three Super League centuries in the run.

In T20 cricket, Zadran again played a key part. A knock of 64* from 59 balls against India stands out as his team fell away in their reply, with steady runs at the T20 World Cup. He finished with 367 runs at a strike rate of 110 and an average of 36.70, playing an important holding role as more aggressive players could move forward around him.

Ibrahim’s T20I runs came in important knocks, making 276 at 46 across the T20 World Cup and the Asia Cup.

Memorable performance

Zadran can boast the highest individual ODI innings for an Afghan after his effort of 162 against a strong Sri Lankan bowling attack in Pallekele, breaking Mohammad Shahzad’s 131* seven years prior.

Ibrahim fell on the last ball of the innings after smashing 15 fours and four sixes prior in a dominant knock, with only Najibullah Zadran’s 77 accompanying him.

It was the second century for Ibrahim in the three-match Super League series, taking his year ODI run tally to 431 at an average of almost 72.

Finn Allen - New Zealand

411 T20I runs at 21.63, strike rate 155.09
387 ODI runs at 38.70, strike rate 94.39

The year that was

The Black Caps have unearthed another gem in Finn Allen, who kicked on with an excellent 2022 and building on his first T20I appearance back in 2021.

Making a century against Scotland from just 56 balls against Scotland jump-started his game in the build-up to the T20 World Cup, where he gave the Kiwis another dimension at the top of the order. His 42 from just 24 balls against Australia put the defending champions’ campaign in disarray almost before it started, and Allen also made his ODI debut in July.

Allen made a half-century on his team's Super League tour of Ireland, before half-centuries against the West Indies and India. He averages 38.70 in the early stages of his ODI career, at a strike rate of 94.39.

Early look at New Zealand rising star Finn Allen and what drives the young opener at the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2022
Memorable performance

Similar to his blitz against Australia at the T20 World Cup later in the year, Allen stole the fourth match away from Pakistan in their tri-series with Bangladesh, making 62 from just 42 balls in a chase of 131.

Allen stole the show with six sixes in the knock, hitting three off the bowling of Shahnawaz Dahani, also taking on the spin of Shadab Khan, Mohammad Nawaz and Iftikhar Ahmed.

Arshdeep Singh - India

33 T20I wickets at 18.12, economy 8.17, strike rate 13.30

The year that was

It’s admirable just how quickly Arshdeep Singh took to the international game, already an integral part to India's bowling assault with the white ball.

Building on a strong IPL career, India’s national setup took on the left-arm quick, and he made the most of the chance with the team looking to bounce back after a disappointing 2021 T20 World Cup. The fast-bowler played 21 T20Is for India, taking 33 wickets at an economy of 8.17, providing strong competition in Powerplay and death-over situations.

Arshdeep was also handed an ODI cap on India's recent tour of New Zealand, and the future is bright for the 23-year-old seemingly destined to take India's game forward.

Memorable performance

Unflustered by the pressure of an India v Pakistan fixture in a global tournament and in front of over 90,000 people, Arshdeep stood tall on the big stage.

With prodigious swing at pace, Arshdeep removed both members of Pakistan’s prolific opening pair. He claimed Babar Azam with his first ball lbw, before taking the wicket of Mohammad Rizwan at the end of his next over.

Arshdeep returned at the death to curtail Asif Ali’s plans of a late onslaught, finishing with 3/32 from his four-over allotment.

Batters from three different continents have been shortlisted for the ICC Men's T20I Cricketer of the Year 2022 award. Here, we take a look at their exploits.

ICC Men’s T20I Cricketer of the Year 2022ICC Men’s T20I Cricketer of the Year 2022
Suryakumar Yadav - India

1164 runs in 31 matches

The year that was

Suryakumar Yadav had a sensational 2022 in the shortest format of the game, becoming just the second batter to score more than 1000 runs in a year in the format. He ended the year as the highest run-getter, scoring 1164 runs at a ridiculous strike-rate of 187.43.

His tally of 68 sixes in the calendar year in T20Is is the highest anyone has recorded in the format in a year by a fair distance. Yadav's incredible consistency in the format is reflected in his average which stood in the mid-40s. With two hundreds and nine half-centuries in the year, Yadav was the standout men's T20I batter.

In the ICC Men's T20 World Cup in Australia, Yadav recorded three fifties in six innings, averaging nearly 60 in the tournament while going at a strike-rate of 189.68.

He continued his stellar year after the tournament too, recording his second hundred in T20Is in the year in the bilateral series in New Zealand. The year also saw Yadav become the top-ranked MF Tyres ICC Men's T20I Player Rankings, achieving a career-high 890 rating points.

Memorable performance

In what was an outstanding year for Yadav in T20Is, there were quite a few eye-catching performances. His maiden T20I hundred, a stunning 117 off 55 balls against England in Nottingham, however, stood out.

From 31/3 in a run chase of 216, Yadav lifted India with his outrageous stroke-making, giving the visitors a chance at chasing down the target. His dismissal sealed India's hopes, but he put the team within touching distance of what would have been an incredible win.

Sikandar Raza - Zimbabwe

735 runs and 25 wickets in 24 matches

The year that was

Sikandar Raza had a stellar year with the bat and also contributed significantly with the ball in T20Is. A remarkable showing in the T20 World Cup in Australia capped off a memorable year for the Zimbabwe all-rounder.

With 735 runs in the year at a strike-rate of over 150, Raza scored more than 250 runs over the next best Zimbabwe batter in T20Is. He also led the wickets chart for them, taking 25 wickets at an excellent economy rate of 6.13.

Memorable performance

While Raza's year with the bat was truly remarkable, his standout performance came in a game where he made little contribution with the bat. He played a massive role in Zimbabwe's win over Pakistan in the T20 World Cup, taking 3/25 with the ball before inflicting the run out off the final ball to give Zimbabwe the one-run victory.

Sam Curran - England

67 runs and 25 wickets in 19 matches

The year that was

The Player of the Tournament at the 2022 T20 World Cup, Sam Curran's bowling stocks in T20s rose in the year with his death bowling, in particular, earning plaudits.

With England missing key fast bowlers at the tournament, Curran stepped up admirably to finish the World Cup with 13 wickets to his name, second only to Wanindu Hasaranga of Sri Lanka.

Record-breaking haul just the beginning for composed Sam Curran
His best of 5/10 against Afghanistan in the tournament was the first time any England bowler took a five-wicket haul in men's T20Is. The left-arm quick made up for missing the 2021 edition of the tournament through injury with his impressive showing in Australia with the ball.

Curran's exploits, including a three-wicket haul in the final, proved to be crucial in England winning their second T20 World Cup title.

Memorable performance

Curran's remarkable T20 World Cup was the highlight of his year in this format, and his best showing came in the final against Pakistan in Melbourne, where he conceded just 12 runs in his fours overs while taking three wickets.

His victims included Mohammad Rizwan, Shan Masood and Mohammad Nawaz as Pakistan put up just 137 runs on board, a total that England overcame with an over to spare.

Mohammad Rizwan - Pakistan

996 runs, nine catches and three stumpings in 25 matches

The year that was

The wicket-keeper batter amassed 996 runs in the year, continuing on from his record-breaking year in T20Is in 2021. Only Suryakumar Yadav made more runs in the year in men's T20Is.

Rizwan hit 10 half-centuries in the year in T20Is, and finished with 175 runs in the T20 World Cup, the joint-most by a Pakistan batter. Averaging 45.27 in T20Is in 2022, Rizwan enhanced his reputation as a high-quality anchor at the top of Pakistan's batting line-up.

The year also saw Rizwan claim the top position in the MRF Tyres ICC Men's T20I Player Rankings for batters for a brief while. He ends the year at No.2 with 836 rating points.

Memorable performance

Rizwan's best came in the home series against England in the build-up to the T20 World Cup, when he made an unbeaten 88 off just 51 balls as Pakistan scaled a 200-plus target without the loss of a wicket.

Three star all-rounders and a prolific top-order batter have been nominated for the ICC Women’s T20I Cricketer of the Year category.

ICC Women’s T20I Cricketer of the Year 2022ICC Women’s T20I Cricketer of the Year 2022
Smriti Mandhana – India

594 runs in 23 matches with five half-centuries

The year that was

Last year's ICC Women's T20I Cricketer of the Year nominee features yet again in the same category. That is some consistency from India's batting mainstay – the super-talented Smriti Mandhana.

From smashing the quickest fifty by an India woman (off just 23 balls) to breaching the 2500-run mark in T20Is, Mandhana enjoyed a good run this year, leaving her mark on the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, the Women's T20 Asia Cup in Bangladesh, and a memorable five-match T20I home series against Australia towards the business end of a fruitful year.

Memorable performance

Mandhana's most exciting innings of 2022 came in the second T20I of the bilateral series against Australia in December. In front of over 47,000 spectators – the highest turnout for a women's cricket match in India – at the DY Patil stadium in Mumbai, Mandhana smacked a 49-ball 79 while chasing Australia's 187/1.

She was India's top-scorer in the match, taking the match to the very end as India set up a Super Over clash after levelling the scores at 187/5.

In the Super Over, India came out to bat first and scored a competitive total of 20/1, out of which Mandhana scored 13 off the last three balls (4, 6, 3). This turned out to be a total well enough for India as they restricted Australia to 16/1, sealing a memorable win in front of a roaring crowd.

Nida Dar – Pakistan

396 runs in 16 matches at an average of 56.57, and 15 wickets

The year that was

The first and the only Pakistan bowler to have claimed 100 T20I wickets, and currently, the second-highest wicket-taker in Women's T20Is, all-rounder Nida Dar impressed more with the bat this year.

She struck three fifty-plus scores this year: an unbeaten fifty at the Commonwealth Games, similar exploits against India at the Asia Cup, and a well-made 61 at home against Ireland in November.

Dar was exceptional in the Asia Cup in which she amassed 145 runs in six matches, at a superb average of 72.50, and also claimed eight wickets at a meager 14.87 runs a piece. For her all-round brilliance, she was also voted as the ICC Women's Player of the Month for October.

Memorable performance

Dar's best performance of the year in the shortest format was in the Asia Cup, against Pakistan's arch-rivals India. After a shaky start, with Pakistan struggling at 33/3 at the end of the Powerplay, skipper Bismah Maroof was joined by Dar. Together they stitched a crucial partnership of 76 runs.

Even after Maroof's wicket, Dar kept the momentum going with a fiery knock. She smashed 56* from just 37 balls with five fours and a six, helping her side post 137/6.

With the ball, she gave away 23 runs from her four overs, and claimed two important wickets of Jemimah Rodrigues and India skipper Harmanpreet Kaur, as Pakistan cruised to their first-ever win over India in women's T20Is in six years. Dar was adjudged Player of the Match for her match-winning contributions.

Sophie Devine – New Zealand

389 runs in 14 matches at an average of 29.92 and 13 wickets

The year that was

The No.1 all-rounder on the MRF Tyres ICC Women's T20I Player Rankings, White Ferns skipper Sophie Devine, is at the top of the rankings summit for a reason. She proves time and again why she is one of the best all-rounders of the game.

Under her leadership, New Zealand won 11 out of 14 games this year, including one Super Over win over West Indies in the fourth T20I in Antigua.

Memorable performance

Another memorable performance of an ICC Women’s T20I Cricketer of the Year nominee featured a Super Over thriller. In the fourth T20I of a five-match series against West Indies in October, Devine emerged as the Player of the Match.

It was a low-scoring thriller, with New Zealand making 111/4, thanks to Amelia Kerr's 49. Devine was dismissed early, running out for 13. But she was brilliant with the ball, returning 3/29 from her four-over spell as West Indies went on to level the scores on the last ball with just one wicket in hand.

In the Super Over, West Indies made 15/0, and the onus was on the experienced duo of Suzie Bates and Devine, to take their side across the line and seal the series. Devine sent the first ball for a six, she then ran a two and a single. Bates then rotated the strike with one run (leg bye), and at this stage, New Zealand still needed six runs to win with two balls remaining.

Devine ran a two on the next ball, and only a boundary on the last ball could have sealed the deal for the White Ferns. Devine hit a six off the last ball, and not only won the match for her team but also won the Player of the Match award for her match-defining exploits.

Tahlia McGrath – Australia

435 runs in 16 matches at an average of 62.14 and 13 wickets

The year that was

Made her T20I debut in October 2021, and is one of the nominees for the ICC Women’s T20I Cricketer of the Year – such has been Tahlia McGrath's meteoric rise this year in the shortest format. One of the most exciting talents around, she is also a Commonwealth Games gold medalist, and the current World No.1 MRF Tyres ICC Women's T20I batter.

At the Birmingham Commonwealth Games, she amassed 128 runs in five matches, averaging 42.66. For her stellar showing, she was voted as the ICC Women's Player of the Month for August this year.

Memorable performance

McGrath started her 2022 with a bang against England in the multi-format Women's Ashes series opener in Adelaide. She made a quick-fire unbeaten 91, her highest T20I score, off just 49 balls. Her entertaining innings was studded with 13 fours and a six.

Prior to that, she also made an impact with the ball as she returned 3/26 from her four overs, restricting England to 169/4. However, the way McGrath took the attack and batted fearlessly, the total seemed below par, as she along with skipper Meg Lanning chased it down with 18 balls to spare.

McGrath was well-deservingly awarded the Player of the Match title.

And it will be well deserved

ICC needs to try and make sense of it. They didn’t mention his strike rate. Maybe this was written by a Pakistan fan working for ICC

An impressive four-player shortlist has been finalised for the ICC Men's ODI Cricketer of the Year 2022 Award.

The nominees for ICC Men’s ODI Cricketer of the Year 2022

Babar Azam - Pakistan

679 runs in nine matches

The year that was:

The ICC Men's ODI Cricketer of the Year 2021 is in the running to do a repeat in 2022. Pakistan captain Babar Azam once again showed his prowess in the 50-over format, showing once again why he has ruled the roost at the top of the MRF Tyres ICC Men's ODI Player Rankings since July 2021.

In the nine matches Babar played this year, the 28-year-old registered eight scores of more than fifty, three of which he converted into hundreds. He finished the year with 679 runs at a stunning average of 84.87.

It was a memorable year for Babar as captain of the Pakistan ODI team, winning three series out of three. Pakistan were unstoppable in the ODI format, losing just one match (against Australia) out of nine.

Memorable performance:

Babar Azam put up one incredible ODI performance after another in 2022, but none more memorable than the 114 against Australia in Lahore.

Already down 1-0 in the series, Pakistan needed to win the keep the series alive. They were set a daunting target of 349 by Australia and needed their talisman to step up.

Openers Fakhar Zaman and Imam-ul-Haq laid the foundation with a 118-run stand, after which Babar put on a masterclass in chasing a total. Walking out to bat when his team needed 231 from 187 balls, Babar almost took his side home with an exceptional display of shot-making.

He brought up his hundred off just 73 balls, his fastest ever in ODI cricket and stuck around till the 44th over. The rest of the batters finished the job as they recorded their highest-ever successful chase in ODIs.

Adam Zampa - Australia

30 wickets in 12 matches

The year that was:

Adam Zampa continued to show why he has been a vital cog in the Australian white-ball setup, finishing the year as the highest wicket-taker for his country in ODI cricket.

The leggie enjoyed his joint-most prolific year in ODI cricket, matching his tally of 30 wickets from his debut year in 2016. His feat was even more impressive this year considering nine of the 12 matches he played were at home, where conditions aren't favourable for spinners.

The 30-year-old began the year on a high with a four-wicket haul and finished with a couple more to round off a great 2022.

Memorable performance:

Defending just 196 against Trans-Tasman rivals in the second match of the three-match ODI series, Adam Zampa spun a web around New Zealand with a stunning five-for that wrapped the innings up for a meagre 82.

The rub of the green was on Zampa's side as Kane Williamson missed a full toss to be trapped LBW. In his very next over, he trapped Daryl Mitchell in front of the stumps, leaving New Zealand reeling at 38/5.

Zampa wiped out the tail and finished with figures of 5/35, which was his maiden five-wicket haul in ODI cricket and his best figures in the 50-over format.

Earlier in the same match, Zampa scored a crucial 16 runs, stitching a 31-run stand with Mitchell Starc for the ninth wicket which helped Australia post a fighting total.

Sikandar Raza - Zimbabwe

645 runs and eight wickets in 15 matches

2022 witnessed the resurgence of Zimbabwe on the international scene and a lot of it was down to one man – Sikandar Raza.

Raza aggregated 645 runs at an average of 49.61 and strike rate of 87.16, making two fifties to complement the three centuries. All of his runs came against top sides that have been brilliant in the white-ball game in 2022.

The 36-year-old scored three centuries, all of which came while chasing, with two resulting in victories and another almost taking Zimbabwe across the line against India.

With the ball in hand, Raza was ever-reliable, scalping eight wickets while giving away just more than five an over.

Memorable performance:

Sikandar Raza made a habit out of winning games from impossible positions for Zimbabwe. The second ODI against Bangladesh in Harare in August was one such instance.

In the first match too, Raza pulled the rabbit out of the hat with 135 off 109 while chasing 304. He followed it up with an incredible all-round showing against the Tigers.

Zimbabwe were in a spot of bother at 49/4 chasing 292 when he once again pulled the rescue act. He had Regis Chakabva for company and together the pair took their side to victory.

Mixing caution with aggression, Raza (117* off 127 balls) stayed till the end and took Zimbabwe home as they recorded a rare series victory for the hosts. He also starred with the ball while bowling the difficult overs in the death and finished with figures of 3/56 in his 10 overs.

Shai Hope - West Indies

709 runs in 21 matches

Shai Hope made his ODI debut in 2016 and since 2017, he has finished every year as West Indies' highest run-scorer in ODIs. 2022 was no different as Shai Hope was once again one of the few shining stars for the West Indies in a difficult year.

Hope did not get off the greatest of starts in 2022 but in typical fashion started to grind out runs in the latter half. He finished the year with 709 runs, which include three hundreds and two fifties, at an average of 35.45.

Memorable performance:

Shai Hope was often the lone warrior for West Indies in ODIs this year and as a result, four of his five fifty-plus scores this year came in losses. The one that didn't – his 119* off 130 against the Netherlands – fetched him the Player of the Match in the first game of the three-match series in May-June 2022.

Chasing 241 in Amstelveen in a rain-reduced 45-overs-a-side game, Hope displayed the immaculate temperament he is known for and batted through till the end.

He was part of two 100-run partnerships, first with Shamarh Brooks for the first wicket and then with Brandon King for the unbeaten fourth wicket. Between the two partnerships was a mini-collapse but Hope weathered the storm to guide West Indies to victory.

Raza and Babar seem to be the leading contenders. Would be nice to see Raza winning. Always great to see Zim cricket doing well.

Surprised that Iyer is not even nominated in ODIs.Looks like the criteria for ODIs was that you have to play atleast one match vs Zimbabwe based on the contenders picked there. :kp :inti

The four nominees for the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy for the ICC Player of the Year put up memorable performances in 2022. We take a look at their achievements.

Sir-Garfield-Sobers-Trophy.jpg

Babar Azam - Pakistan

2598 runs in 44 matches

The year that was

2022 was yet another year of Babar Azam making and breaking records. Babar was the only player to breach the 2000-run mark in the calendar year across formats, with his 2598 runs coming at an average of 54.12, which included eight hundreds and 17 fifties.

The 2021 ICC Men's ODI Player of the Year continued to rule in the 50-over format, scoring 679 runs in nine matches. It is a testament to his consistency that he registered scores of 50 or more in eight of those innings. He continues to hold on to his top spot in the MRF Tyres ICC Men's ODI Player Rankings and is once again in the running to win the ICC Men's ODI Player of the Year 2022.

Babar also enjoyed a tremendous year in Test cricket, despite the team results not going his way. He accumulated 1184 runs in just nine matches and did the bulk of the heavy lifting for Pakistan in the longer format.

It was also a memorable year for Babar as captain in the white-ball formats – Pakistan won all three ODI series they played, losing just one match out of nine. In the T20I format, he led Pakistan to their first T20 World Cup Final since 2009.

Pakistan players react after a thumping win over New Zealand in the T20 World Cup 2022 first semi-final.
Memorable performance

The chips are down, Pakistan are staring at defeat but one man stood between Australia and victory in the second Test in Karachi.

Pakistan were bowled out for 148 in the first innings, giving Australia a mammoth 408-run lead. The visitors batted again and set them a target of 506 with close to six sessions remaining.

Pakistan got off to the worst possible start, losing two wickets with just 21 runs on board and with five sessions remaining. In walked Babar Azam and thus began a gritty 10-hour marathon that almost took Pakistan from an inevitable defeat to almost pulling off an impossible win.

His 425-ball 196 not only fetched him his first Test century in two years but also his highest Test score. He stitched crucial partnerships, first with Abdullah Shafique (228-run stand) and then Mohammad Rizwan (115 runs).

The equation was down to 196 runs in 36 overs but the wicket of Babar four runs short of a well-deserved double ton followed by two quick scalps shut down all hopes of victory.

Babar Azam walked off to a standing ovation, having registered the highest score by a Test captain in the fourth innings of a Test.

Pakistan skipper Babar Azam participated in an optional net session ahead of Pakistan's semi-final against New Zealand in Sydney.

Ben Stokes - England

1066 runs and 33 wickets in 28 matches

The year that was

England were living a nightmare in Test cricket after humiliating series losses in the Ashes and the series against West Indies. Joe Root resigned as the Test skipper and the reins were handed over to Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum, the coach.

Since then, Stokes has taken England to new heights, winning nine of the 10 Tests as captain. Along the way, he has scored 870 runs, including two centuries and picked up 26 wickets.

The talismanic all-rounder did not have a brilliant white-ball year. In fact, he announced his retirement from ODI cricket to focus on the other formats. In T20Is, scored 143 runs in nine matches and picked up seven wickets. The numbers may not seem significant, but 52 of those runs came when England needed it the most.

Memorable performance

2022 will be remembered for Ben Stokes' captaincy and performances in Test cricket but it is his innings of 52* in the final of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup that proved to be invaluable.

The bowlers, including Stokes who picked up one wicket, did their job in the first innings to restrict Pakistan to just 137 in the final. But given the circumstances under which they made the final, Pakistan showed incredible belief and scalped three big wickets inside the Powerplay.

Batting at No.4, Stokes came in clutch for England and showed great temperament at time when the dugout was jittery after the early wickets. He was going at less than run-a-ball for the most part of the innings but took the game deep to keep England alive.

He turned the tide in England favour with a six and a four off Iftikhar Ahmed in the 16th over. He got to his fifty, which was his first in the 2022 T20 World Cup as well as his only half-century in limited-overs cricket this year, and hit the winning runs to bury the ghosts of Eden Garden from 2016.

Sikandar Raza - Zimbabwe

1380 runs and 33 wickets in 39 matches

The year that was

Sikandar Raza emerged as a crisis man for Zimbabwe in a year that saw the African country's stocks rise in international cricket.

Raza was a force to reckon with in both white-ball formats, scoring more than 600 runs in both T20Is and ODIs. The star all-rounder enjoyed his most prolific year with both bat and ball since making his debut in 2013.

Raza scored 645 runs at an average of 49.61 in ODIs. All three of his centuries in the 50-over format came when the chips were down while chasing – two of them resulted in wins over Bangladesh and the final one gave India a huge scare.

In T20Is, Raza struck at an incredible strike rate of over 150 to accumulate his 745 runs. He was also the highest wicket-taker for in the shortest format, scalping 25 while giving away just 6.13 an over.

He was the Player of the Tournament at T20 World Cup Qualifier B in July and carried his form into the marquee event, winning the Player of the Match thrice, including Zimbabwe's epic win over Pakistan.

Memorable performance

Sikandar Raza scored a mountain of runs for Zimbabwe in 2022 but it was his bowling spell in the T20 World Cup match against Pakistan that made the most impact.

Chasing just 131 runs for the win, Pakistan recovered from the early stutter and were cruising along to a win. At one point, they needed only 43 off 39 balls but that's when Raza weaved his magic with the ball.

Having been hit for a six the previous ball, Raza roared back with consecutive wickets of Shadab Khan and Haider Ali. In the next over, he scalped the well-set Shan Masood down the leg side with a stumping, thus turning the tide of the game in the five balls he bowled.

The pacers held their nerve in the final overs and led Zimbabwe to a memorable win.

Tim Southee - New Zealand

65 wickets in 31 matches (correct at time of publication)

The year that was

The ever-reliable Tim Southee was one of the stars for New Zealand with the ball in 2022. Southee was consistently amongst the wickets and finished with 65 scalps, the highest by a Kiwi in the calendar year.

In a year where New Zealand were far from their best as a team in Tests where they finished without a single series win, Southee was the highest wicket-taker for his country with 28 wickets in eight matches.

The 34-year-old was particularly lethal in the white-ball formats, picking up crucial wickets across all phases of the game. He was a vital cog in the New Zealand team that went through to the semi-final of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup, snaring seven wickets in five matches at a miserly economy rate of 6.57.

Memorable performance

Tim Southee set the tone for the rest of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup with a stunning spell of 3/6 in the opening match of the tournament against neighbours and hosts Australia.

Southee struck off his very first ball of the tournament to dismiss David Warner and added another in the Powerplay with the wicket of Mitchell Marsh, all while giving away just six runs.

It was he who started Australia's downfall on the day and it he who finished it as well as the hosts succumbed to an 89-run defeat on the opening day.

An inspirational leader, an aggressive batter, a classy opener and a fiery pacer constitute our nominees the ICC Men's Test Cricketer of the Year 2022 award. Here, we take a look at their exploits.

Ben Stokes - England

870 runs and 26 wickets in 15 matches; nine wins as captain

The year that was

Ben Stokes, along with Brendon McCullum has changed the fortunes of English Test cricket in 2022. Struggling for results and at the rock-bottom of the World Test Championship standings, Stokes took over an English side that was struggling for confidence.

His inspirational leadership has now built up a confident and attacking unit, who have won nine out of 10 Test matches under his tenure in 2022. Stokes has repeatedly stated about taking the fear of failure away from the players and that has reflected in the ultra-aggressive brand of cricket that England play under him.

Stokes has also led the charge by example, having a good year with both bat and ball. He has scored 870 runs, two centuries and four half-centuries and also scalped 26 wickets at an average of 31.19.

Memorable performance

England had their first hiccup under the Stokes era, losing the first Test against South Africa at home. Needing a response, Stokes stood up and delivered the goods, scoring a brilliant 103 in the first innings. He also registered figures of 2/17 and 2/30 in the match, as England roared back to hand South Africa an innings defeat in Manchester, enroute to winning the series 2-1.

Jonny Bairstow - England

1061 runs in 10 matches

The year that was

Jonny Bairstow has arguably been the biggest benefactor of Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes taking over the leadership of England's Test team. Given the freedom to play his attacking game, Bairstow had one of the most fruitful years of his Test career, leading to somewhat of a resurgence.

Bairstow played 10 Test matches in 2022, scoring 1061 runs at a staggering average of 66.31 and a strike rate of 76. He notched up 6 centuries and 1 half-century, showcasing his brilliant conversion rate. The year could have been all the more better if not for a freak golf injury, which ruled him out of the final home Test against South Africa and the tour of Pakistan.

Memorable performance

Bairstow showcased what a threat he had become in the middle-order in the rescheduled fifth Test against India. He first hit a counter-attacking 106 off 140 in the first innings to help England stay alive in the game in Birmingham. In the second innings, he went one better, scoring 114 and establishing a brilliant stand with Joe Root as England chased down 378 to level the series.

Usman Khawaja - Australia

1080 runs in 11 matches

The year that was

Khawaja made his return to the Australian side from the wilderness in 2022 during the Ashes and ensured that no one was taking his spot away again. There were some memorable performances, both in the middle order and then as an opener.

Khawaja played a vital role in Australia's batting unit during the latter half of the Ashes, as well as their famous win during the away tour of Pakistan. Overall, he scored 1080 runs in 11 matches at a stunning average of 67.50. He has four centuries and five half-centuries in the calendar year as his contributions have helped Australia put one foot in the World Test Championship final.

Memorable performance

Making a comeback in the side after a prolonged absence, Khawaja punished the England bowlers during the Sydney Test in the Ashes. He scored centuries in both innings (137 and 101*), as Australia aimed to take a 4-0 lead in the series. Final day heroics from the England though ensured that they held on for a draw but Khawaja nevertheless had made his presence felt.

Kagiso Rabada - South Africa

47 wickets in nine matches

The year that was

Kagiso Rabada was again South Africa's shining light with the ball in 2022, delivering breakthroughs at crucial junctures. He had a year to remember, starring in some famous Test victories for South Africa against India, New Zealand and England.

Overall, Rabada picked up 47 wickets in only nine matches at a remarkable average of 22.25 and a devastating strike-rate of 34.1. He also registered two five-wicket hauls, with best figures of 5/52.

Memorable performance

Rabada was on a rampage in the first Test against England at Lord's, bowling some fiery spells. He registered figures of 5/52 in the first innings, helping South Africa bowl England out for 165. He then followed it up with a disciplined performance of 2/27 in the second innings, as South Africa bowled England out for 149 to win the match by an innings and 12 runs to take a 1-0 series lead.

I think gary sobers award is gonna be between ben stokes and babar azam.

Ben stokes deserve it

In Men's Odi cricketer of the year, Iyer should have been nominated instead of Shai Hope. Rest all seems fine.

ICC CONFIRMS CONTENDERS FOR DECEMBER PLAYER OF THE MONTH AWARDS

Prolific Test batters form the shortlist for the ICC Men’s Player of the Month award for December; Babar Azam (Pakistan), Harry Brook (England) and Travis Head (Australia)

Shorter format superstars are honoured on the women’s shortlist; Suzie Bates (New Zealand), Charlie Dean (England) and Ashleigh Gardner (Australia)

The ICC has today revealed the names shortlisted for the Player of the Month awards for December 2022, casting light on the outstanding performers across men’s and women’s international cricket during the month.

The shortlist for the ICC Men’s Player of the Month for December features three batters who piled on the runs during ICC World Test Championship (WTC) battles last month.

Pakistan skipper Babar Azam is nominated and seeks his third Player of the Month crown following a fruitful month at the crease, with two centuries in home Tests against England and New Zealand. England’s Harry Brook is shortlisted thanks to a breakout month with the bat, scoring centuries in each of their Tests during the 3-0 series victory in Pakistan. The final contender is Australia’s Travis Head, who excelled in their WTC series against both West Indies and South Africa, scoring consistently throughout.

The nominees for the ICC Women’s Player of the Month all enjoyed remarkable form during their respective short format series during December.

New Zealand icon Suzie Bates celebrates her first nomination for the award after a glut of runs helped her team secure T20I and ODI series victories over Bangladesh. Charlie Dean is shortlisted for the award after her superb form inspired England on their successful white-ball tour of West Indies. The lineup is completed by Ashleigh Gardner, whose brilliance for Australia in their T20I series victory against India helped her reach the summit of the MRF Tyres ICC Women’s T20I Player rankings for all-rounders.

An independent ICC Voting Academy* and fans around the world can now vote to decide the winners, which will be announced next week. Fans registered at icc-cricket.com/awards are invited to cast their votes until Sunday.

ICC Men’s Player of the Month Nominees for December:

Babar Azam (PAK)

Pakistan’s influential skipper is no stranger to ICC Men’s Player of the Month nominations. Having won the award on two previous occasions (April 2021 and March 2022), Azam is in line to win his third prize after another prolific month in the recent WTC series against England which carried into the subsequent series against New Zealand. In the four Tests played during the month, he scored 523 runs at an average of 65.37, top scoring for his side in five out of eight innings. Among the highlights from his showstopping month were scores of 136 against England in Rawalpindi, and 161 scored in the first Test v New Zealand at Karachi.

Harry Brook (ENG)

England’s 3-0 series victory in Pakistan featured several fine individual performances, but Brook arguably provided the most important contributions during their landmark success. In what was only his second-ever Test match, the England youngster dazzled in Rawalpindi with scores of 153 and 87 to claim a historic victory and set the tone for the rest of the series. Eventually, Brook finished the series having scored centuries in each of the three Tests, registering a total of 468 runs at an average of 93.60 to earn him his first nomination for the ICC Men’s Player of the Month award.

Travis Head (AUS)

A number of crucial performances in Australia’s recent WTC series against touring West Indies and South African sides characterised Travis Head’s month. His 99 in the first Test against the West Indies was followed by an epic 175 in the second to seal the series win, but arguably his most important innings was reserved for the first Test against a blistering South African pace attack. His 92 in the first innings came as most of the others around him faltered, earning him the Player of the Match award in the four-wicket win. Head ended the month having scored 455 runs at an average of 91.00, picking up two wickets along the way.

ICC Women’s Player of the Month Nominees for December:

Suzie Bates (NZ)

Bates has so often been at the forefront of the White Ferns success in recent years, and her performances in December personified her prowess in the short formats. A key figure in both the ODI and T20I successes against Bangladesh, her highlight came as she scored a graceful 93 not out in the first 50-over match. With 223 runs across both series, the New Zealand opener has her first nomination for the ICC Women’s Player of the Month crown.

Charlie Dean (ENG)

England enjoyed a dominant series of results over the West Indies in last month’s ODI and T20I encounters, and Dean was a constant threat with the ball as she claimed 18 wickets across both formats in December. The leading wicket-taker in both series, Dean took four wickets on two separate occasions. Alongside her impressive strike rate, she also boasted an astonishing economy rate – 2.92 in ODIs and 4.64 in T20Is, further highlighting her restrictive impact on opposition batters.

Ashleigh Gardner (AUS)

Gardner rose to the top of the MRF Tyres ICC Women’s T20I Player rankings for all-rounders in December after her heroics with bat and ball inspired Australia to a 4-1 T20I series victory in India. Also celebrating her maiden nomination for the Player of the Month award, Gardner’s month culminated in 115 runs at an average of 57.50 and seven wickets at 18.28. She saved perhaps her best performance for the final game, scoring an unbeaten 66 to save a stuttering Australian innings before two crucial wickets, including that of the dangerous Shafali Verma, helped restrict the home team to fall short by 54 runs.

If we are talking impact, no player has made more of an impact for his team this year (across formats) then Ben Stokes. If he was playing ODIs he would have made an impact there as well.

If we are talking about one player just having an incredible year across formats and making a strong case for why he is the best all-format batter in the world right now, then Babar wins hands-down.

Purely comes down to what fits into your definition of player of the year.

I don't think we should be disappointed if either guy wins.

What isn't up for debate though is SKY winning T20 Player of the Year, Babar winning ODI Player of the Year and Jonny Bairstow winning Test Player of the Year.

Emerging Player of the Year is a packed field and honestly, Jansen, Ibrahim Zadran and Finn Allen have all had remarkable breakthrough years. Either one could win it. Harry Brook is a pretty notable omission though. Only reason that I can think of would be that most his best performances didn't come within the qualification period.

So the ICC T20 Men's Team to be announced on 23rd Jan....

The winner of the ICC Men's T20I Cricketer of the Year had one of the best years any player has had in the format's history. Here, we take a look at his outrageous 2022 and the standout performances from the year.

Suryakumar Yadav - India

1164 runs in 31 matches at an average of 46.56 and a strike-rate of 187.43

The year that was

Suryakumar Yadav had a stellar year with the bat breaking an array of records and setting a benchmark like never before in the format. He became just the second batter to make more than 1000 runs in a calendar year in T20Is and ended the year as the highest run-getter, scoring 1164 runs at a ridiculous strike-rate of 187.43.

Yadav hit a stunning 68 sixes during the year, easily the most recorded by anyone in a year in the format's history. The Indian was the key batter for his team through the year, smashing two hundreds and nine half-centuries.

Yadav was at his stupendous best during the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia, recording three fifties in six innings and averaging nearly 60 during the tournament. Notably, his strike-rate was yet again right up there at 189.68.

Having already recorded a ton earlier in the year, Suryakumar continued his brilliant year after the multi-nation tournament, making his second hundred in T20Is in the year in the bilateral series in New Zealand. Yadav also became the top-ranked MRF Tyres ICC Men's T20I Player Rankings, achieving a career-high 890 rating points.

Memorable performance

There were quite a few standout performances from Yadav during the year. But perhaps his best came in Nottingham against one of the best white-ball teams in recent times - England - when he made his maiden T20I hundred, a stunning 117 off 55 balls.

From 31/3 in a run chase of 216, Yadav lifted India with his outrageous stroke-making, giving the visitors a chance at chasing down the target. His dismissal ended India's hopes of a famous victory, but he put the team within touching distance of what would have been an incredible win.

ICC

The International Cricket Council (ICC) today revealed its first individual award winners in the ICC Awards 2022, naming the stars honoured in the Associate, Emerging and T20I categories following a global vote conducted among the specialist panel of media representatives – the ICC Voting Academy – and global fans who voted for their favourite stars.

Winners in the 13 individual categories were based on overall performances and achievements throughout the calendar year, with the first set of results announced across ICC digital channels.

T20I Cricketers of the Year

The T20I Cricketers of the Year both find themselves at the summit of the MRF Tyres ICC T20I Player Rankings for batters – India’s Suryakumar Yadav claiming the ICC Men’s T20I Cricketer of the Year award, and Australia’s Tahlia McGrath named the ICC Women’s T20I Cricketer of the Year.

Yadav showcased the full array of his inventive strokeplay in 2022 and his performances at the crease thrilled fans the world over, not least during his phenomenal campaign at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia. Scoring 1,164 runs during the calendar year which included stylish centuries in England and New Zealand, no one amassed more runs in T20I cricket. Indeed, he was the only player to surpass the 1,000 run milestone in the format, at a staggering strike rate of 187.43.

Reacting to his award win, Yadav stated, “It is a great honour to have been voted the ICC Men’s T20I Cricketer of the Year by the panel, especially after being nominated alongside such a strong list of contenders. I enjoyed many highlights during the year and to receive this award is another reason why 2022 was very special for me, with a lot of positives to take moving forward.

“This achievement is only made possible thanks to the teammates, coaches, support staff and cricket fans who helped me on my journey. We have a big year ahead in 2023, and I will strive to continue this success for my country in every performance.”

ICC Women’s T20I Cricketer of the Year Tahlia McGrath reached the summit of the T20I batter rankings back in December, and despite only having made her debut for Australia in late 2021, her rise to the top has seen plenty of individual and team success. Across several notable performances in the format during the year, she registered 435 runs at an average of 62.14. One of those moments came in her side’s Commonwealth gold-medal winning campaign in Birmingham, starring against Pakistan with an unbeaten 78 and three wickets – a display which helped her win the ICC Women’s Player of the Month award for August.

McGrath expressed delight, commenting “It’s an incredible honour to be named the ICC Women’s T20I Cricketer of the Year, especially with so many incredible players across the world taking to the game to the next level.

“It’s been a great year for the team in the T20 format, winning the first ever women’s cricket gold medal at the Commonwealth Games and beating India at home; this is a really nice way to cap it off.”

Emerging Cricketers of the Year

Among the wealth of exciting talent to have surfaced in international cricket during 2022, India’s Renuka Singh claims the ICC Women’s Emerging Cricketer of the Year from a competitive field, and South Africa’s Marco Jansen has beaten strong contenders to win the ICC Men’s Emerging Cricketer of the Year award.

Renuka gained her first cap for India in October 2021 and hasn’t looked back since. Her customary threat with the swinging ball helped her claim 40 international wickets during the year – 18 in ODIs and 22 in T20Is. Her tours of Sri Lanka and England were particularly prolific, and the former helped her gain her first nomination in the ICC Player of the Month category. She now stands comfortably in the top ten of the ICC Women’s T20I bowler rankings, and could be a key weapon for India’s campaign in the upcoming ICC Women’s T20 World Cup.

On winning the award, Renuka commented, “It was a dream for me making my debut for India in late 2021, and to be identified as the leading emerging talent in the women’s game gives me great confidence that I am on the right track. I have received great support from my teammates and coaches along the way, and I would like to thank them all for their encouragement over the past 12 months and more.

”It is a privilege to know that I was chosen for this award not only by the voting panel, but by fans around the world. I am truly humbled to be named the ICC Emerging Women’s Cricketer of the Year, and I will use this to drive me and my team forward, not least as we approach next month’s Women’s T20 World Cup in South Africa.”

Marco Jansen has made a significant impact on international cricket since making his debut for South Africa in December 2021, most notably in the longest format. The athletic left-armer took 36 wickets in eight Test matches during 2022, all of which came against high-ranking Test sides; Australia, India, England and New Zealand. In addition to his impressive bowling average of 19.02, the 22-year-old also provided valuable runs in the lower order, underlining his credentials as a promising all-rounder to watch.

Jansen was equally thrilled with his award win, stating, “I am absolutely delighted to receive this award. I have worked hard on both my disciplines over the last 12 months, especially my batting, so to be rewarded by being named the ICC Men’s Emerging Cricketer of the Year for 2022 is a special honour.

“I would like to thank all the coaches, support staff and my teammates that have helped me develop over the past year and hopefully I can keep improving and performing for South Africa in the years to come.

Associate Cricketers of the Year

Two eye-catching performers celebrate the Associate accolades in the ICC Awards 2022, as Namibia’s influential leader Gerhard Erasmus claims the ICC Men’s Associate Cricketer of the Year award, and the UAE’s all-round starlet Esha Oza secures the ICC Women’s Associate Cricketer of the Year award.

Erasmus became a familiar figure following Namibia’s historic campaign at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in 2021, and he built on this success to find plenty of success in the shorter formats last year. From his captaincy in Namibia’s upset over Sri Lanka in their opening T20WC 2022 fixture, to his match-winning unbeaten 121 against Oman to claim a vital Cricket World Cup League 2 victory, his 2022 was littered with success. Individually, he ended the year as the leading ODI run scorer around the globe, with 956 runs at an impressive 56.23 average.

Speaking on his accolade, Erasmus commented, “It is a great honour to win the award as ICC Men’s Associate Cricketer of the Year amongst a growing group of coveted cricketers. Associate cricket continues to push the level of cricket closer to that of higher ranked teams.

“The standard has never been higher, and I’m therefore delighted to have won this award with my on-field performances. A huge credit also to our management and my teammates.”

Claiming the Women’s Associate award following a superb 2022, UAE’s batting all-rounder Oza scored 675 runs in T20Is during 2022, including two big centuries. Her accomplishments at the crease meant the 24-year-old was the second-highest run scorer in the format for the year in women’s internationals. Not limited to just her batting achievements, Oza also took 15 wickets through the year at 15.40, highlighting her prowess at both disciplines of the international game.

Oza reacted to her award win by saying, “I feel deeply honoured to receive the ICC Women’s Associate Cricketer of the Year 2022 award. I was delightfully awestruck and couldn’t believe my ears.

“2022 was a great year for me as a player as well as for us as a team. It feels great to be rewarded for all the hard work and this award also acknowledges the immense motivation and guidance received from family, teammates, coaches and Emirates Cricket. I will cherish this moment forever and I would like to thank each and every one who made this possible. I will keep giving my best to the game.”

Ben Stokes - England

870 runs at an average of 36.25 and 26 wickets at an average of 31.19

On the basis of his numbers alone, England’s talismanic all-rounder Ben Stokes had an excellent year in the whites of international Test cricket.

But sometimes the game is about more than just numbers, and in 2022 Stokes – along with new England head coach Brendon McCullum – completely transformed the form, fortunes and style of England Men’s Test team.

Players and teams have played extremely attacking cricket before. But Stokes has delivered a new level for his consistent commitment to England’s entertaining and aggressive approaches with bat, ball and in the field.

Since taking over as England captain, Stokes has led the team to nine wins from 10 Tests, completing series victories over New Zealand and South Africa at home, beating India in the one-off postponed Test to level the series at 2-2, and hammering Pakistan 3-0 away from home – England’s best ever margin of victory in the country.

Prior to his appointment as captain, England had been beaten in each of their four most recent completed series and had won just one of their previous 17 Tests.

As a captain Stokes was hugely impressive, setting clever traps with his fields and utilising his bowlers brilliantly throughout the year. He was also fair but decisive with his selection decisions, bringing in new faces when required but not afraid to leave out form players if the conditions merited it.

With the bat Stokes enjoyed a strong 2022, scoring 870 runs at an average of 36.25 and an aggressive strike rate of 71.21, notching up two centuries.

His first-innings 103 in the second Test against South Africa was the standout knock of his year, giving his team some impetus immediately after their only Test loss of the English summer.

Stokes also took four wickets in that match, finishing the South Africa series with 10 dismissals to his name and an average of 15.70.

While his overall numbers with the ball for 2022 don’t jump out as exceptional (26 wickets at 31.19), Stokes deployed himself in a number of different tactical roles throughout the year, prioritising impact and team balance over his individual statistics.

Team records tumbled under Stokes’ captaincy. And it was with the bat that the records were most eye-catching.

England’s scoring rate of 4.13 across 15 Tests in 2022 was the second highest in history and the most since Australia in 1910. Those stats include the away defeat to West Indies and the end of the Ashes loss under Joe Root. In the matches in which Stokes led England, the team struck at a game-changing 4.77 per over.

England’s 506/4 on the opening day of the first Test against Pakistan was the most runs scored by any team on the first day of a Test match. Even more impressively, they came from just 75 overs as bad light ended play prematurely.

And of the front-line batters (from numbers one to six) to have scored at least 100 runs in Test cricket in 2022, five of the seven highest strike rates belong to English players – of which Stokes is one. Only outliers Rishabh Pant and Travis Head stop an English sweep of those stats.

Stokes was earlier this week named as the captain of the ICC Men's Test XI for 2022.

He was joined in the select XI by his fellow ICC Test Cricketer of the Year Award nominees - his compatriot Jonny Bairstow, Australia's Usman Khawaja and South African bowler Kagiso Rabada.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) today unveiled the final list of winners celebrated in the individual categories of the ICC Awards 2022. Among the categories revealed on ICC’s digital channels were the prestigious Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy for ICC Men’s Cricketer of the Year and the coveted Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy for ICC Women’s Cricketer of the Year.

Pakistan icon Babar Azam was revealed the winner of the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy, as well as scooping the Men’s ODI Cricketer of the Year prize, while England’s all-round sensation Nat Sciver emulates the feat by securing the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy and the Women’s ODI Cricketer of the Year award.

Elsewhere, Ben Stokes was confirmed the ICC Men’s Test Cricketer of the Year following a landmark spell as England captain, Richard Illingworth was named the ICC Umpire of the Year and Nepal wicketkeeper Aasif Sheikh was honoured in the Spirit of Cricket category.

The winners were selected following a global vote conducted among an independent panel of prominent media representatives – the ICC Voting Academy – whose votes were combined with those of cricket fans from around the world registered to icc-cricket.com.

Winners in the 13 individual categories were based on overall performances and achievements throughout the calendar year.

Babar Azam – Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy and Men’s ODI Cricketer of the Year

By winning the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy, Babar becomes the second winner from Pakistan in consecutive years, emulating the feat of his teammate Shaheen Shah Afridi, who won the prize in 2021. Babar also set new records in 2022, not least becoming the first, and still the only, player to win the ICC Men’s Player of the Month award on two occasions.

Picking up where he left off in 2021, Babar enjoyed another momentous year, captaining his side to two Finals, including the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia. At the crease, he piled on the runs in all formats, scoring over 2,500 international runs across ODIs, T20Is and Tests, ending the year as the leading run-scorer in the latter.

The Pakistan batter also claims the ICC Men’s ODI Cricketer of the Year award for a second successive year – the first to do this since Virat Kohli in 2017 and 2018. Babar consolidated his position atop the ODI batter rankings thanks to his staggering scoring consistency, registering 679 runs in 9 matches at an average of 84.87. Within these numbers came notable performances against the likes of Australia, West Indies and New Zealand.

Reacting to the awards, Babar said, “I feel humbled to have been voted as winner of the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy and join the ranks of some of the most iconic and respected names who have previously won the biggest and most prestigious individual award in our great sport. I continue to look up to these players as well as champions of the past for inspiration, motivation and improvement.

“As cricket is a team sport, this recognition and achievement would not have been possible without the overwhelming support of my family, team, fans and the institution, to all of whom I am greatly indebted and thankful.

“Every match I played for Pakistan has been special and memorable, but the most satisfying and accomplishing aspect for me was to compete and perform in front of my home fans against Australia, England and New Zealand’s touring sides. Of course, reaching the finals of two major tournaments in the United Arab Emirates and Australia were also some of the highlights for me and my team, and we hope to do better this year, which is going to be equally demanding but highly rewarding.”

Nat Sciver - Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy and Women’s ODI Cricketer of the Year

England’s Sciver enjoyed a remarkable year of form across all three formats of the game, and in claiming the prestigious Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy, becomes the first English winner of the award since Sarah Taylor back in 2014.

A regular figure in a highly successful year for England in T20Is, she excelled in the longer format too, recording a classy half-century in the Women’s Ashes Test against Australia in January and a dominant 169 not out against a touring South Africa later in the year.

However the ODI format was where Sciver truly excelled in 2022, becoming the first English winner of the ICC Women’s ODI Cricketer of the Year award. She now stands second in the MRF Tyres ICC Women’s ODI Player Rankings, after 833 runs during the year at 59.50.

Among her thrilling performances is the memorable century scored in the Women’s Cricket World Cup Final in March, where despite falling short of the mammoth total set by Australia, she took the fight to a fearsome bowling attack to record a memorable century, dragging her side back into contention in a high scoring spectacle.

Sciver evoked the legacy of Heyhoe Flint in her reaction, adding, “It’s lovely to have been awarded the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy for ICC Women’s Cricketer of the Year, especially as Rachael was such a legend of the women’s game in England and Wales. It’s always a privilege to be given individual honours but no personal achievements are possible without the hard work and togetherness of the whole team. Picking up a trophy or a medal is all the more special when you do it alongside your teammates so hopefully that’s what 2023 has in store.”

“It means a lot to have been awarded the ICC Women’s ODI Cricketer of the Year. It’s funny that two of my standout moments in ODI cricket in 2022 came in losing causes. It’s a cliché, but I would happily swap individual honours for team success because they are the moments you really remember. Congratulations to my fellow award-winners and thank you very much for the award.”

ICC Men’s Test Cricketer of the Year

Ben Stokes was an influential figure at the heart of the England team that saw a revival of fortunes in 2022. The former Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy winner becomes the third Englishman to win the ICC Men’s Test Cricketer of the Year award, behind teammate Joe Root who won the award last year, and Alastair Cook, who won in 2011.

Alongside his outstanding individual performances in the longest format, scoring 870 runs and taking 26 wickets, Stokes secured the England captaincy in April and this immediately heralded a return to success.

The England skipper drove a pioneering approach to Test captaincy, initiating a more direct, aggressive style of play in terms of both batting style, and declarations. Since the change, England have won nine of their last ten Tests, including dramatic series wins against Pakistan, South Africa and New Zealand.

Stokes reflected on a momentous year in the Test arena, commenting, “I’d like to thank the ICC, the panel and the fans for voting for me as the ICC Men’s Test Cricketer of the Year. This is down to the England players and management for what has been such a positive year in Test cricket. We have played some incredible cricket with series wins against New Zealand, South Africa, a significant performance against India and a historic victory in Pakistan.

“We are enjoying our cricket and love having fun wherever we play. The way in which we approach Test cricket is to excite the fans and making it a spectacle for everyone to get behind and enjoy regardless of the result for England.

“We cannot wait for what is in store over the next 12 months.”

Bairstow is handsdown the best Test player of the year. Turned atleast 3 tests on its head. But for Bairstow there was no bazball or stokes culture. He was trully robbed.
