What's new

20th June 1999: Australia beat Pakistan by 8 wickets in a World Cup final at Lord's

The most one sided and dead af boring World Cup final ever. Pakistan got violated that day.

Tbf, we basically violated all our final opponents in 99, 03, 07 and 15.

1999 was the biggest let down. The match was over by lunch time almost. I mean damn that’s crazy for a final. No fight whatsoever

Wasim pulling out of the 1996 QF was definitely suspicious. This one I don't get.

Relaid Lord's pitch had extra bounce. And there's the slope at Lord's and no bowler knew how to exploit it better than McGrath.

Opening 5 overs was 1/5 I think. Fleming was getting hammered at the other end.

2001 Natwest final was at Lord's as well .

Wasim was not the captain. It was his then arch nemesis Waqar who was the captain and made the same call and got bowled out for 152

McGrath first 5 overs 1/12

Had the toss gone differently how do you think the final would have turned out?

Lol, you clearly didnt watch aus vs Nz 2015 final 🤣

That’s close second but come on man a cold morning in England and the game getting over by lunch. No fight shown. Literally nothing from Pakistan team. Not even some useless cameo or a spirited spell. Just 3 and a half hours of Australia beating the crap out of supposedly the most gifted white ball team in Pakistan cricket history according to many Pakistani fans.

No wonder the players couldn’t go back home safely.

I mean under usual circumstances even playing the final is a matter of huge pride, win or loss.

But Pakistan lost an unprecedented 4 matches during that tournament and made it to the final because of the format, NZ being chokers as always in the semis.

Moody and Reiffel also bowled quite well that day and kept Pakistan under pressure.

Its a close 2nd because you're indian and loser was pakistan 🤣🤣🤣.

Bhai enough with the bias

The most one sided final in my viewing history boring end to probably greatest start of any tournament.

True. But it was McGrath's opening spell that was particularly furious. Was generating a lot of lift and I think it's the fastest he has ever been clocked on the speedgun

Crazy how that final changed the trajectory of Australia as a tournaments team.

Point to be noted before 1999, Australia had only won 1 major trophy and they lost a few finals and semis before that. They couldn’t even win 1985 WSC and 1989 Nehru Cup where by then standards as good as Champions Trophy.

They even made it to the final controversially after a tie with South Africa in the semis.

Their classic era started with Pakistan and their era ended with Pakistan (2024 test).

Will take a while before aus becomes a champion again.

It’s crazy.
In an alternate timeline, South Africa won the 1999 WC boosting the confidence of their entire roster to go on to have even more impactful careers, going on to win 1-2 more trophies along the way. Kallis, Pollock, Klusner, Donald, Bouche, Gibbs etc could have had a different legacy. Not just of great cricketers but of champions. South Africa were the actual team of the 90s just ahead of Pakistan. Pakistan had more raw talent. South Africa had some freak individual brilliance and supplemented by top notch fielding , athleticism were the best.

Without Warne, we don't win the 1999 world cup. As mentioned previously, his performance in the semi final in particular was unreal. Lifted the whole team from the floor and made them believe.

In 1996, we couldn't overcome a mastermind in Ranatunga.

Warne also took you to the finals in 1996 single handedly.

His overall record as an ODI spinner maybe behind Saqlain, Murali but his big match performances still put him right up there among the greatest ever ODI spinners

In 1996 there was only one reason Australia didn't win the World Cup.

Aravinda de Silva.

Lahore’s dew was punishing.
I feel like you saying that just downplays what an incredible knock it was. Coming in at 23-2...in a runchase...in a World Cup final...against the mighty Australians...in an era when 241 was often considered a match-winning total, especially in such a high-pressure match.

Yep, he played clutch knocks in the semi and final that everybody has forgotten about.

Im glad we lost that world cup.

Wasim Akram didnt deserve the legacy that Imran got because of his corrupt practices.

It was a heartbreak. That team was the strongest one among all teams that have played in the WCs for Pakistan till now.

Not taking anything away but it’s fact. The dew situation was bad the bowlers couldn’t do much. Just look at how Shane Warne did a match ago against West Indies compared to his final’s performance and you would understand.
