At least 44 people, including 26 professors have died at the Aligarh Muslim University after getting infected with the lethal novel coronavirus, within just 20 days, officials said, adding the new variant is suspected to have caused the deaths.

Tariq Mansoor, Vice Chancellor of the AMU, has urged the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) to investigate the samples taken from the varsity. His brother had also died of Covid-19.

Among the 26 professors who have lost their lives to Covid-19 include 16 working and 10 retired faculty members.

Officials said that samples have been collected from the university after the VC's request. The samples have been sent to the CSIR Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology in Delhi for examination.

The AMU has written a letter to ICMR, asking for a genome study of the Covid samples as soon as possible. From this study, it can be found out whether a new variant of Covid-19 has spread in the university.

Prof. Mohammad Ali Khan, 60, of the Department of Post Harvest Engineering, Prof. Kazi Mohammad Jamshed, 55, of the Department of Political Science, Sajid Ali Khan, 63, professor of the Department of Psychology, Mohammed Irfan, 62, Chairman of the Museum Department, among others are among the deceased.

Such loss of knowledge as well as the human cost. Horrible.

My wife's uncle has also died a couple of days ago. Very unfortunate as he could not find a hospital bed in Bangalore.

Lot old people are dying due to this 2nd wave of Covid in India which is spreading like wild fire. The new strain of the virus looks unstoppable and proving to be deadly for old people with pre-existing conditions.

This is what I mean, the numbers given by the Indian govt are fabricated. 26 professors is a very high number, 1 or 2 makes sense.

It is still a very high number and showcases the magnitude of destruction caused by corona in India.

Everything in India will be high numbers thanks to its excess population. Even if only 0.01% of population are dying due to Covid, the number will still run into millions.

Whenever we talk about India, we should remember than we are talking about 1.34 Billion people.

I know but we are talking about one institution here.

They were more than just numbers.

Speaking to some from Aligarh, I am told 44 faculty have died!

This is a huge loss for an institution like Aligarh.

They were more than just numbers.
True. This is a huge loss. Professors (as well professions like engineers, doctors etc) aren't overnight production. They take years and years of research and hard work to get there. And for them to be culled like this by a pandemic is great loss for any nation.
