Steve Waugh, the former Australia batsman and team mentor for their ongoing Ashes series, backed openers David Warner and Cameron Bancroft to come good during the remainder of their English tour.

Warner, who was the second-highest scorer at the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2019 – with 647 runs he was just behind Rohit Sharma – has struggled to replicate his white-ball form in Test cricket, where he has failed to register double figures so far in the Ashes, totalling 13 runs in three outings.

Bancroft hasn’t fared much better, aggregating 28 runs in the series so far. Their struggles have put the onus on Steve Smith to do the heavy lifting at No.4 and Australia have, in fact, been saved by the former captain’s brilliance.

"I think it's just Test match cricket, and they haven't been easy wickets,” Waugh said, defending the pair of Bancroft and Warner. “Batting last night was difficult. Six o'clock at night, an hour to go, under lights, overcast conditions – that's as tough as it gets, and this morning was difficult again.

“It's a fine line. You can analyse and scrutinize players, but that's Test match cricket. Sometimes, you are going to miss out. If you pick a guy, you back him for the long term, and right now, we are confident those guys are going to bounce back."

Though he was dismissed for only 13 on Friday, 16 August, Bancroft soaked up 66 balls during his stay and did his bit to blunt the new ball in extremely difficult conditions. His resistance ensured that Smith was protected until the 23rd over, when the ball had lost some of its shine.

"I don't think you look at the runs too much. I think Dave Warner looked really good last night. It was a pretty good delivery which got him. I don't think that's too much cause for concern,” Waugh said.

“Bancroft stayed in there for quite a while, did a good job for the team. They both want to get a lot more runs, obviously. It's challenging, and the conditions over here are not easy for batting. It's not as if the ball is coming on and you can play a big cover drive. You have to work really hard for every run."

It’s with Warner that the greater concern lies, both because of his lower returns as well as the fact that he has been dismissed by the same bowler – Stuart Broad – on each occasion. Broad has routinely beaten both edges of Warner’s bat and has had him lbw, caught behind and bowled so far.

If you pick a guy, you back him for the long term, and right now, we are confident those guys are going to bounce back.
Steve Waugh

"I don't think I've done anything majorly different, apart from bringing the stumps into play a little bit more,” Broad said of his plan to the ace opener. “In the past, I've seen Warner as looking to find his edge all the time, whereas this has been a slight change of plan.

“That's been on the pitches we've played on. They've been quite dry, much drier than we were expecting as a side. That wobble seam has moved off the dryness of the pitch rather than there being a bit of moisture and swinging. I've just been looking to wobble it onto off stump. There have been a couple of decent balls in there to Warner.”

Have really enjoyed Mitchell Johnson's punditry in this series. Fantastic demonstration in the Zone on Sky right now.

That’s an excellent inswinger by Archer on his first ball of the day.

Nearly got Smith plumb.

Nearly 43 overs bowled by England still Jack leach is still not bought what type of captaincy is this from root.

All results possible if we do not have any further deduction in overs.

Especially when you consider how Smith only averages 32 against SLAs.

England failing to get wickets this whole morning.

Doesn't seem to be a result in this test. Australia just looking to bat out time.

I am sure Root would settle for a pair of 35s from him.

The reason for that 35 is that he played a lot of spin on rank turners in sub continent. It would idiotic to think that jack leach of all people will get him comfortably for
30 odd everytime

Warne saying on commentary that Viv Richards is the best batsman he has ever seen.

Smith hit on the arm...... looks to be in some pain. Hope it's not a serious injury. 89mph by Archer.

The only way you getting Smith out

Hopefully it isn’t a series ending injury

Archer bowling express pace, 96.1mph tops. Super exciting!

Archer in 2019 reminds of Akhtar in 1999. A great world cup and this reminds if Akhtar in 99 in Australia where he bowled rapidly and got Langer hurt with a 96 mph bullet.

Barbados express is here to rule test cricket.

Incredible talent

The past hour or so has been incredible to watch.

Smith will surely have to be taken off for concussion tests now. This is a brutal spell by Jofra.

Concussions test

First ever substitute?

Do they have like to like replacement ?

I don't think Australia will replace him just yet, they'll wait for the concussion tests first. Though they probably should replace him considering that this match is as good as drawn.

English crowd is the worst crowd I ever seen, the man got hit on neck and crowd still booing

That was some battle between Smith and Archer

Fantastic test cricket right there.

Smith battled it out brilliantly and was very wise decision to get him off the park for a bit after that hit he took.

Nasty hit! This is some spell from Archer. Haven't seen fast bowling like this in quite a while. Never from an english bowler. This guy might be able to hit 160 as well!

Absolutely hypothetical, but imagine if Smith comes back at 9 down for Australia and completes a century...

Archer is looking like an assassin out there. I hope Smith is fine though.

That looked really bad, hit him on the neck. Hopefully he's fine and can come back out and complete his century.
Brilliant stamina from Archer, he's been bowling 93 mph+ for the past 5 overs in his 4th spell.

But why is he not bowling the yorker?

Did anyone observe that archer is smiling after that nasty delivery. This guy seems to like breaking helmets of the batsmen.

Langer wanted to get Archer into his 4th and 5th spells and see his speeds but infact he has only got faster in them and looking much more dangerous.

I love it. I absolutely love this stuff. I don't care. I want to see blood on the pitch. I want to see players bleed and get hurt. it's amazing how tough smith is.
if you can't get a player out, then just hurt him and get him retired. Excellent strategy. well done archer. I want Aussies to win but I love to see short stuff.

bumrah did the same to the Aussies and now we see joffra implement a similar game plan.

Archer is a genuine fast bowler unlike the array of no-name fast bowlers many Pakistani fans hype to the moon.

People are going gaga over Hasnain and Musa, who haven't played a SINGLE Test match, based on one season of pyjama league PSL. I don't see them maintaining this sort of pace either.

This.

Pakistani fans seem to forget that T20 isn't really proper cricket where you have to just turn up and bowl 4 overs so pace in there would be high up even then most of ours don't do so.

Ours can't seem to sustain this pace that Archer is bowling in his 5th, 6th spell.

How West Indies couldn't recognize this talent.

Much of the old guard of the English cricket establishment were tut tutting at West Indian fast bowling in the 80s. So-called guardians of the game like David Frith (and vicious racist) called them brutes.

Now I see a packed Lord's cheering Archer, very much in that 80s West Indian fast bowler mould, hitting helmets for fun. How times change !

Former chief selector of West Indies, Courtney Browne is the man to thank for that.

Gabriel, Thomas, Archer, Roach and Holder would've been an extraordinary sight. Oh well.

Is Root trying to break Archer? While Archer is pumped up playing his first test match but bowling more than 30% of the team’s over and that too at such pace is too much workload in my opinion.

pretty cruel from archer. if im not mistaken, philip hughes was hit round the same area before he died. should have at least checked on him for a second

Which is why I was comparing him to Akhtar. Genuine pace and injuring Steve Smith on the slowest Lords pitch in atleast 14 years.! This guy's one hell of an athlete to be maintaining these speeds into his 25th over.
Fast tracking him is the best thing ECB has done all year.

How the fu*k West Indies couldn't recognize this talent.

he played for west indies u19. i think he made his intentions for playing for england. west indies cricket board is almost as bad as pcb.

windies have missed out big time.

but i think its better because archer deserves to play in a better team then windies. he would not have played that many tests, he has a much bigger chance to become a legend now.

Yes and not to forget Archer has played 28 FC matches and got over 100 FC wickets before debuting for Eng and now playing test match.

Bowlers like Hasnain, Musa etc need more 4 day cricket under their belt. Though they are still 18-19 and Archer is 24 so one can expect they will get to play some number of matches before they are 24 but not with playing T20 leagues all around before even playing handful of matches.

Thing about Arther is that he produces so much pace with such a small run up and with so littler effort. It must be something to do with his genetics as he has naturally very athletic body and physique.

No need. this is war. screw them. they will do the same to your team. cummins hurt him? so he should now check on smith ? get outta here.

Why did you mention Bhumrah when Markhor didn’t talk about Archer being the best in the world or anything?

Bhumrah has got nothing to do with his post.

bumrah hurt the Aussies the exact same way. joffra is replicating what bumrah did not too long ago although he is being wildly overused. I like what I am seeing regardless. I am becoming a huge joffra fan. nasty stuff. love it.

Dunno who the “old guard” were - certainly not the players, just a few journos stirring trouble.

England have always had fast bowlers, but since the 1980s have struggled to keep them fit.

What the hell, is this guy the Terminator or something ?!

Whacks it for four.

Steve Smith, what a resilient fighter. Truly the best Test batsman in the world.

Steve smith has come to bat but shame to English crowd still booing
Lord crowd was not classy this time around, disappointing stuff, get over this pre-mediated booing for Smith, they look fool

Smith is a true Champion and one of the nicest AUS, as far as I can remember, if you got a like one AUZ player, Smith's name will be the one most people will come up with!!

Archer is probably more athletic . Effortless pace. But Akhtar had that hyperextending elbow as well which gave him an advantage .

smith is a fraud. a real one. don't get that twisted but make no mistake he is the greatest test player ever. Far better than kohli in test.
