What's new

2nd Test between England [258, 258/5d] and Australia [250, 154/6] finishes in a draw

Really sad what happened to Smith. A blow to the back of your neck is much more different to a blow anywhere else on the body.

The worst bit is he is now out of this test, and most possibly the next test as well.

Stokes is slowly establishing himself as one who will be mentioned in the league of these five men:- Imran, Hadlee, Botham, Kapil, Kallis.

In my books, he has already surpassed Flintoff now.

What's England plan now?

Bat 10 overs, hit 60 runs and ask Australia to chase 250 in 50 overs?? Worth a shot IMO.

Ben stokes- what an year he is having. When I first watched him bat thought he was another t20 player.

Chief Destroyer, still think Warner will finish as the GOAT opener? :)))

Scored a hundred in his second test match against a rampaging Johnson.

Brilliant, with Warner out and no Smith, England can level the series.

Oh my, Archer is crazy.

This is WI of 1980s stuff. Yet another batsman hit.

Mitchell starc has to play the next test, Aus need an enforcer who will terrify the English batsmen. If he is fit and in form can easily bowl 95mph spells.

Jofra Archer is what England really needed.

They now are a complete unit.

There's just no clues to pick up before Archer bowls those bumpers. He has that gentle, Holding-esque run-up and action, and bang out of nowhere it comes at you.

If only Archer was playing for West Indies, Holding would’ve been proud of Jofra.

I think this match will be a draw in the end, but Archer has completely changed the physical and psychological complexion of the rest of the series. Can’t wait for Headingley - I will be there for at least two of the days! 😃

Archer bowling great but no one is checking for no balls.....

No one checking for when he runs down the pitch either...…

No consistency from series to series in England.....

English Comms completely silent on it too?

Or maybe he just isn't bowling no-balls or running down the pitch... :13:

This is why cricket needs a great west indies team. No team produced those many dangerous bowlers like WI.

Leeds is the fastest deck in England these days. AUS are in for some hot stuff.

That Marcus harris guy looked good against us. Don't know why Aus dropped him. They should try him in next match.

England would've probably won this. Rain ruined the party completely.

If it becomes a draw, Aussies will just have to win one more game to retain Ashes.

Jofra bowled 10 overs out of 21 overs, root has given more work load to him considering he was having back stress fracture

Remove khwaja and bring Labuschagne for the next test,Labuschagne has played well in county cricket this year

Windies were unbeatable in the era many bouncers could be bowled in an over, the rules were changed as no one wanted to see bouncers all day long.... gradually Windies stopped producing the likes of Holding, Marshall, Ambrose...…..

No we are back to two bouncers per over...….

Looks like Super Sub Labuschagne is leading Australia to safety.

So, 1-0 Australia after completion of 2 tests.

England advantage currently as far as 3rd test is concerned. No Smith,Archer really making buzz with his hostile pace bowling and century from Stokes would have brought a sort of enthusiasm in the England dressing room.

England a bit lucky to get that wicket. Marginal decision, looked like his fingers were probably under the ball but can’t be 100% sure.

Never a catch the ball clearly touched the ground. We need to develop a new technology, 3D like so the umpires can actually be in the fielders position.

England have made it interesting but not many overs left now. However, the game isnt finished yet.

A great match. Such a shame that four sessions were lost to rain.

Ben Stokes recorded a fantastic century on day five at Lord's, but his efforts were not enough to push England to victory in the second Test.

The draw means Australia maintain their 1-0 lead, and the home side now must avoid defeat at Headingley in the third bout to maintain a chance of winning the series.

Steve Smith did not take to the field on day five after taking a blow to the neck just a day prior, when Jofra Archer caught him painfully with a searing bouncer. Marnus Labuschagne replaced him in Test cricket's first ever concussion substitution. The rule, which changed on 1 August, means that the player who is brought in can bat and bowl in the match.

A battling effort from Travis Head (42*) and Labuschagne (59) ensured honours were even for this one, the pair quelling the threat of Archer and co with some impressive, diligent batting. A late wobble almost looked perilous for Tim Paine's side, but England were four scalps short at the finish.

Stokes and Jos Buttler began day five well, adding to their side’s overnight score of 96/4 with a sensible approach early in the day.

England's Cricket World Cup final hero then began to accelerate after having reached his half-century in a more measured manner, while Buttler fell for 31, top-edging Pat Cummins to long-leg. It was an innings of real determination and class from England's all-rounder, the 28-year old blasting 11 fours and three maximums on the way to an impressive seventh Test hundred.

Nathan Lyon received some brutal treatment, Stokes smearing him for consecutive sixes over mid-wicket along the way, and Australia’s spinner reached three figures of his own, going wicketless from his 26 overs at the expense of 102 runs.

Jonny Bairstow chipped in with a decent 37-ball 30 before Joe Root called for the declaration (258/5) with Stokes unbeaten on 115, setting the away side an unlikely 267 to win.

The tourists, who had 48 overs to endure to avoid defeat, made a shaky start to their second innings. David Warner’s poor Test form continued, the left-hander notching his fourth single-figure score in as many innings when Archer (3/32) had him nicking off to the slips in the fourth over.

Usman Khawaja then followed suit, edging behind to gift Test debutant Archer a second scalp, and England fans, buoyed by the impact of their new, exciting fast-bowling sensation, started to believe that they were in with a chance of victory. Cameron Bancroft departed via an lbw from Jack Leach soon after, leaving the Aussies flailing on 47/3. Marnus Labuschagne dug in though, soaking up 100 deliveries for his 59 and forming a stoic partnership with Travis Head, who was dropped in the slips on 22 by Jason Roy, denying Stokes his first wicket.

The Aussies survived a late barrage from the England attack, but spirits in the field were lifted once again following Leach's (3/37) dismissal of Labuschagne. Matthew Wade followed soon after as Leach cashed in again, and Paine became Archer's third victim to a stunning diving grab at mid-wicket from Joe Denly, leaving Head with all of the responsibility out in the middle.

He ushered his side through to a draw though with the help of Pat Cummins, Joe Root's men just four wickets short of victory.

Ben Stokes is already an ATG
What a player he is
#Salute
lol calm your ****. He hasn't even proven that he can do it away from home. He has done absolutely nothing in subcontinent. Overrating of English players much.

He is a fine player but he has a long way to go. Prove himself in sub continent pitches.

he has taken a 5 wicket haul in india. he was not amazing in sri lanka, but pretty handy. he is a good player of spin.

he is no doubt the best all rounder in the world. pandya, jason holder and maybe neesham are the next best. those 3 are no where as good as stokes

and stokes is that type of player whose stats dont reveal the degree of impact he has on games

No doubt stokes is the best of the current lot, but he's certainly not a all time great yet

Average 30 with the bat and 26 with the ball in Asia.

Has a test match 256 in SA.

Got 120 in his second test, against Johnson.

I disagree here. He has won his team a match already in Bangladesh vs a good BD side. He has a 5-fer and a hundred in India as well.

He was a player of the series in England win in SA 2016 and was very good in that Ashes 2013 in Australia in the series where only him and Stuart Broad had notable performances from England.
