Are Hindus allowed to eat at restaurants that serve beef? Have you guys ever been to a Pakistani restaurant? Just wanted to see what was culturally acceptable before I make plans. :afridi

Of course they're allowed to eat wherever they want. Best thing about Hinduism is that there are no rules.

So this person is a vegetarian, would they be offended going to a restaurant that served meat on the same plates and prepared with same utensils? I know some Hindus here are very strict about it and don't even eat eggs although this person is more liberal but just wanted to make sure.

This is a generic question.

There are many Indians who won't even eat onions etc. They avoid food in places where it is used. The level of hysteria reaches different levels for different people. Some Jains/Brahmans discriminate people who eat eggs, will go to any extent to pass comments if you eat chicken, fish, mutton. But normal non veg eating Hindus will go nuts when it comes to eating beef. I do not like the hypocrisy. Some of my cousins own Subway chains here in CA. They do not eat the sandwiches in their own shop. They happily serve beef in their shops. But funny thing is that, they are big supporters of BJP in India and do not want beef to be consumed by any in India. They will wear branded leather jackets which is made from how many dead animals but do not eat eggs or any other non veg items.

In the current political climate in India, people are killed for political reasons just by spreading the rumours that a person has eaten beef. I think in future, there is a possibility, people could be lynched by being falsely accused about thinking about eating beef.

I am not sure if Hinduism has no rules. The current flavor of Hindutva supporters has made their own rules and will be willing to lynch, commit murders as needed if beef is even mentioned.

My parents used to prevent me from even drinking water from my friend’s house who ate eggs. I used to follow all the rules when I was in India because I had to be part of the community. I grew up in a Gujarati neighborhood in Malad, Mumbai. For past many years I am based in US and I am not that conservative any more though I do not eat beef. But my cousins who are still in Mumbai are real nut jobs when it comes to such restrictions and are involved in the current behavior followed by the lynching supporters of the current political dispensation ruling India.

Any Indians who say that there are no rules in our Hindu religion, I am not sure if they are saying it with their heart in the right place. They are as bad as any other fanatics from other religions, because I not see any condemnation for the lynching’s that is done in India right now over what people eat etc. If people are being killed over what they eat, then people should condemn people or political parties who incite illiterate people to commit horrendous murders in India. But they won’t. All are silent supporters. I rarely see any condemnation from the Indian folks over here. I may be wrong, I do see some. IndianFan being one. But such sane minds are rare in India. Jaded is also a fine human being. I think there are some more sane and fair Indian minds over here. But I am bad with names.

I think this is my first and kind of last post. I prefer reading over writing.

Of course there are dietary rules in Hinduism. The faithful perceive and practise them differently. Many Hindu's see the consumption of beef as being and unpardonable sin.

Thanks, I'm pretty sure Hinduism has some rules. this person is also of gujarati origin so I'm not familiar with the culture although she's really liberal, just wanted to make sure I don't do anything culturally insensitive.

No Hindu eats beef if they follow the religion.

Hinduism has rules like all religions. However the rules are very lose. There are no rules when it comes to prayer and rituals. You can pray to any god in any form and nobody bats an eyelid.

We can eat at restaurants that serve beef or any form of meat. Very few Hindus and Jains may have objections over it. Overall overwhelming majority of Hindus are adaptable.

I saw Brahmins and Jains Making pepperoni pizzas even though they don’t eat it themselves.

If he's a Gujarati vegetarian, take him to a vegetarian restaurant. End of.

Go case by case on decisions like these, and not the consensus from a thread on a forum.

Idk any vegetarian restaurant's lol and she's Indian-American so her taste may differ. Are gujaratis really strict about dietary rules?

I have friends jains, forget non veg ,they dnt even eat onions. I have friends who only eats egg and other any non veg is big no. I have friends who doesnt eat non veg at all.i have friends who eat beef and everything. I have friends like myself, who eat non veg but dnt eat beef. Beef is big no. But wont mind if someone is eating even infront of me.
So answer would be. Talk to her.hindus have different food habits and most common food habit is they consume non veg but dnt eat beef. Rest it depends.

From experience, yes they are. Many of them don't drink and don't eat non vegetarian food.

Gujarati origin? Play safe and take to a veg or atleast non beef serving restaurant.

As an Indian Muslim, I think you can test them by asking politely what meat they prefer. If they like beef, they will let you know. Otherwise fair to assume the opposite. In our weddings, when we invite Hindu guests we have to make sure that there is no beef served.

Of course. You can visit any restaurant and eat any type of meat offered irrespective of your religion.

It's a 100% personal choice. There are no codified rules.

Yes. Religion never prohibits anyone from not eating anything in sanatana dharma/ hinduism. Some caste's are prohibited from eating including mine, still it's a personal choice and in here no one enforces or looks down on people who break such things.

Many Pakistanis are ignorant of the fact Hinduism is actually not a religion; it is a group of beliefs & thoughts to identify ones own inner self.

If that is true, why was the Australian guy who had a tattoo of an Indian goddess on his leg surrounded by hostile diners then asked to leave the premises?

It'll depend upon the locality. More of a social reaction rather than based upon religion.

Who's "this" person btw? Is the wedding bell ringing eh?

Not sure what the connection with eating beef is, and I don't even know anything about this incident. But since you asked, all I can say implementation what a religion says is never perfect (just like there is a variance between what a country's constitution says and what you see on the ground). People take things in their hands and tend to have their own interpretations.

Not ideal, but can't expect a billion people to behave in a regimented way.

If she is Indian American, I am sure she has friends who eat meat. I lived in the US for 14 years and I am a vegetarian. I don't eat meat but I have no issues with my friends ordering the same when I am with them in restaurants.

More of a reaction led by the rise of Hindutva culminating in the appointment of a Hindu nationalist party to govern the country. Would stuff like this or the threats to cartoonists have happened twenty years ago?

If you go to Sabri Nihari in Chicago on a Sunday morning you will be shocked to see many South Indians gulping down some solid Pakistani Beef Nihari.

Yeah I've seen many south indians at pakistani restaurants lol but I'm not sure if north indians are more strict about dietary rules.

Here is a radical idea.... how about you ask the girl herself where she wants to go to have food.

*shock and horror*

Didn't know you were in Chicago, I just went yesterday to Devon, tbh most of the bachelors either go to Hyderabad house or Gharib Nawaz for obvious reasons.

Annapurna, good place if you are veg like me.
Do you know any place where the naan or tandoori roti doesn't have yeast in it? Everything feels like a damn white bread here.

I'm in Detroit...only 4 hours away and frequently visit Chicago for family and friends. Honestly if you can't find it on Devon it will be hard to find it anywhere else. I would say try some of the grocery stores...or Delhi Darbar.

Sorry...wish I could've helped.

I don't think there are rules are these in Hinduism. There are Hindus who eat beef as well and are religious. There is nothing strictly defined rules as islam in Hinduism. I think people can choose to be agnostic (unsure about existence of God) and still follow Hindu ceremonies like Hindu marriage and Hindu naming of children.

No issues, its bad across Devon, hell I tried it in high end Desi restaurants as well and it wasn't great, the frozen ones from Patel bros are ok..better than the restaurant ones.
