It was a botched attempt and I wouldn't single out Amla anyways.
The 2 batsmen who were playing reached 190-1 after 40 overs and had an excellent view of the conditions. They also knew they were playing a spinner short with Tahir the only spin option in the side.
The surface was suited to Pakistan in general, but they refused to accelerate or show intent even from 190-1 and even Shaun Pollock was frustrated and said "Do they really think they can lose 9 wickets in last 10 overs.
South Africa were clearly short of 40 runs today and I would blame both Amla and Van Dussen for complete lack of intent to score heck in the 43rd over for that matter.
They could have been forgiven if there were few wickets remaining but when you shouldn't be ending the innings on 266 for 2 , rather your innings should always end at 300-9 or 350-8 or something like that.
Amla becomes fastest to 27 ODI tons, 2 innings faster than Kohli.
Hail Amla!
South Africa ability to get bogged down by spinners is a big issue. Even in the MLS. The rate was good against quick bowlers, but as soon as spinners came the rate would go down from 7/8 against quick to 3.5 against spinners. That's why there were few run chases in the tournament. What should worry CSA is that none of the new guns looked comfortable against spinners, even leading run scorers such as Reeza and Rassie were woeful. I'm perplexed by the inability to rotate strike tbh. QdK was the only one who maintained a similar S/R against pace and spin.
It showed that the role of an anchor in ODIs is just an excuse for a batsman to bat selfishly.
The guy batting with Amla was on debut so he had an excuse, but what on earth was Amla doing.
Is an important batsman getting his confidence back more important than team winning a match? That's the question.

Why People Most People Saying Amla has been Selfish Batsman thru out career...He debuted at ODI very late at age of 25 in 2008
still He is fastest Batsman to reach 2k, 3K, 4k,5K, 6k, 7K Runs in ODI with Career Strike Rate of 90 & Fastest to to 27 Tons too
For Opener in ODI, 90 SR is Superb, How many Openers has 90+ Career SR in ODI...I think only 5\6
Dhoni who usually bats at no 6 has Career SR of 87.5 less than Opener Amala who is dubbed as selfish batsman by fellow indians
I know...We cant ompare Dhoni(no 6 batter) with Amala(Opener) in terms of Volume of Runs scored...but what about SR, he is lagging behind selfish Amala....Dhoni should have 100+ SR, may be 105 or 110 but he is has been Selfish for Notouts and Avergae...evryone knows
20 times Amala scored tons in 1st inning and SA won all, but only this time Amala scored ton in 1st inning but SA lost...actually Amala was out of form thruout 2018 and he needed to gain form for WC....not only Amala others too failed to accelerate including Miller...so stop blaming Amala he had one bad day bcoz of poor patch earlier and
He scored 100 with Six too
This is not the first time he has done this. Rohit sharma might have lesser career strike rate than Amla. But he has th extra gear that not even Kohli is blessed with. Impact players have more gears and they seamless move between gears. Amla can score at one pace. There are several like him. But atleast some of them try to go after bowling at the right time and don't mind getting out. Amla hardly lifted his bat until he was forced to. In this day and age who would remain 105 not out after 50 overs.
. Only if he could replicate that more often....
Most people don't have that record because they play for the team. If they would have played for themselves, many others could have replicated the same. You get out while trying to score quick.... A concept that amla will never understand.
I don't have stats but the OP just said Amla has 20 tons batting first and SA lost just one. It's clear Amla scoring hundreds benefits SA more often than not. Amla understands he has his limitations, why model his game differently?

ABDV was there to fulfill the deficit and to bring the score to a competitive level.
He retired, RSA failed to increase the RR.
Selfish is stretching it , lets not forget hes out of form as well . That said Amla was always a limited player in LOIs , the difference is without AB who in the past would take a start like this one it 350+ totals
Actually the more I think I feel this was an inning which even Amla would feel he would have done better.
His first 50 came of 52 balls, next 50 of 61 balls, wickets were hardly falling from other end. I mean even Amla generally won't play his second 50 this slow. Obviously he doesn't change gears enough but he should have got atleast 70 of his next 60 balls(that's definitely he is capable of, so a 120 of 110 perhaps would have been a better reading and the game would have been more tighter in that scenario. For me, he is 20 runs short of what he should have scored.
