He was a superb player. Underrated but he would be a colossus today. I recall his 203 fondly. Just a tribute thread to a great bat.

Is that the one he got at the Oval where Holding bowled like lightning?
Poor fella, copping Lillee and Thompson (away and home), then Roberts and Holding straight after. No wonder he was the first to put a helmet on!
He manned the breach at a time when Boycott had made himself unavailable to England.
Yes. One of the truly great knocks. The Aussies did him in but he was a wall against the great WI attacks. Really fine player. One of my heroes in a bygone era (when my hair has colour).![]()
Seemed ahead of his time as a ODI player to.

Only played 18 ODIs so the sample was small, but he got four centuries, average 48. I wonder how he would have done in an era of more ODIs.
Can one ask how has a tribute to Denis Amiss become him v SRT thread?

No idea. I was just reliving wonderful memories of an epic innings and great player.
Only one of two cricketers to score an ODI hundred in his first and last ODI! The other one is Desmond Haynes.
The more I read from Tusker, the more I cannot help thinking how much sense he makes. I was reading an article about Arunabha Sengupta from Cricket Country reg memories of legends from bygone era, as to how people make sound that that the bygone era was something else and the current crop can only dream of matching that skill. Unfortunately, due to lack of extensive video evidence, one may have to take their word on face value. However, what Arunabha says is that as years dwindle by, the shots get more elegant, the sixes go longer and the bowler gains a few yards of pace! No expect a select few know how difficult or easy it was!
No disrespect to Amiss, I have read some great things about him, and for someone to have an Away average 10 points higher than home average, I would think is a great achievement (even if i take into consideration, most of the folks played county cricket in England around that time) but two things bother me
1. I thought his test average of 15 vs Australia as compared to 46 overall, sticks out like a sore thumb! He was exposed against Lillie and Thommo.
2. He was never captain of England.
Thanks for the kind words. It is a natural human tendency to cling on to our memories from our best years. And back in the day it was also easy to pass them off as absolute indisputable facts. But the advent of modern tech has rudely disrupted this aspect of cricket. As such there is a short clip of Dennis Amiss 203 on YT and it is predictably nowhere near as spectacular as described by the fanatics. I would rather watch Ravi Ashwin bat.

Look at how far back the slips are in the panoramic shots.
How can you tell the distance from any of the angles in that footage ?
By estimation of the ratio between the length of the pitch and the distance from the wicket to the slips in the panormaic shots.
