Abid Ali is in the form of his life right now.

His last few First Class innings :

85 & 52 vs Australia
81 & 61 vs NZ A
10 & 105* vs NZ A
11 & 113 vs Eng Lions
101* vs SNGPL (QEA final)

QEA last year: 541 runs Avg 49.18
QEA this year(before the final) : 422 runs avg 52.75
QE Oneday : 299 runs Avg 59. 80

He is also among the top 5 run-makers in List A cricket, worldwide,in 2018.

He is 31 right now and this is his peak as a batsman.

He has scored on the most pacer's friendly green and bouncy wicket of Diamond cricket ground Islamabad in last 2 seasons before this season too and has a solid technique. Right now he has scored a 100 in this season's QeA final. He is also a make-shift wicket keeper. Should be on plane to SA. MUST!

Especially since we don't have any solid openers. Imam is failing and Fakhar is injured. Azhar could be pushed to open I guess but Abid should be included.

PP always claims that the next guy in domestics will be the one.

Let's believe it when we see it.

Shans masood will probably get picked again on family connections.

It’s been the truth recently. Shaheen, Hasan were both tipped to do well before their debuts and they didn’t disappoint.

Fakhar’s name was doing the rounds a good year or two before his debut and he delivered. Same with Haris.

I would take into consideration everyone under 25 innings and select.

30+ cricketer..... no thanks.

Whatever happened to Saad and Saud?

He is a opener so I think he deserves a opportunity as he has been consistent. Think Saad hasn’t had a great season in first class barring a couple of big scores. And Saud has done well but not picked.

Both are not openers though and opener is something we need at the moment. Age doesn’t matter as much for a batsman imo. Though his fitness looks pretty bad.

Yoyo test might be a challenge.

That's a very valid point Abdullah.

Given his current performances for me He should open with Azhar (fitness permitting)

Umar Akmal and Abid Ali would be called for the camp I guess. What do you think ? Who among those two can pass fitness Test on the whole including Yoyo test ?

He isn't competing with Saud & Saad.

The only challenge he has infront of him is fitness Test. He has ticked all other boxes required for Selection.

I’d bring him and Umar Akmal back into the test side. Both are scoring runs.

Drop imam and ofc Hafeez is retired.

Abid
Azhar
Haris
Shafiq
Babar
Akmal
Sarfraz
Yasir
Hassan Ali
Abbas
Amir

Should be starting xi vs SA.

He'll only be selected if somehow Chief selector Inzamam is sacked or is put under pressure. By the time the match ends the lifaafa media and ex-players would divert the attention from our pathetic lousy batting lineup towards Mickey Arthur.

For 2 years Inzamam has got away with choosing from a pool of few players for the opening slot and slowly bringing in Imam into the team.

There should be 6 ALIs in the playing 11.

Azhar Ali
Abid Ali
???
???
???
Saad Ali
???
Anwar 'The All Rounder' Ali
Hassan Ali
???
Rahat 'The Destroyer' Ali

Has decent stats in FC especially the runs he has been scoring off late, but I am not too sure if investing in a 31-33 year old (33 in retrospect that mostly are older than age stated professionally) is a good move as it may work in the short term for a year max but I would rather go and pick Sami Aslam who I think can be a test opener if he can churn out the flaws in his technique and running.

good back foot player, gets back and across old school style, bit suspect with planting the front leg flicking across the line, a bit fat too, but given pak literally have no openers i don't think can be too choosy.

I would open with Fakhar and Azhar with Abid Ali as the reserve option if one of them flops hard during the series or gets injured.

Yes he is 31 however we need them short term results and Imam + Sami Aslam are not the answers, they're awful and totally sub-standard. They simply don't belong to international cricket, let's give someone in form a chance (or in the set up at least).

I have no issue with him getting a chance. He has performed at domestic level.

deserves a chance for sure based on his stats 'if' he clears fitness test

Can anybody tell me whether Abid Ali is injured or not? Shan's selection over Abid doesnot makes sense at all.

He is currently playing in the SNGPLvHBL QEA final and made 134

Abid is officially 31 and slightly overweight. Nobody knows if he successfully passed fitness Test at NCA or failed it. For him and U Almal (overweight guys) it's not easy to pass Yoyo test with a score of 18.2 + which is now bench mark. I do not know how one of my fav Haris Sohail passes it because he is too lazy, by no means an athlete and also has a tummy which needs getting rid off soon given his knees history.

Shan Masood on the other hand is most Fit domestic player in Pakistan along with Shehzad Azam Rana. Both of them train very hard and are strict wrt Sports Nutrition.

Shan Masood was highest rungetter in two FC matches between Pakistan A and New Zealand A. (From both sides)

2 hundreds in 2 matches
352 runs at @88
SR of 72.

He had best SR amongst top 5-6 scorers of that series.

Mickey & Inzamam value SR for Test Selection.

Imam-ul-Haq: 4 hundreds and 13 fifties with average of 34 in FC cricket.
Shan Masood: 10 hundreds and 30 fifties with average of 33.
Abid Ali: 17 hundreds and 31 fifties with an average of 38.

Guess which openers got picked and which one was left behind at home ?

He must feel hard done by but to be fair, South Africa is a hard place to debut and part of him is probably relieved he doesn't have to face the likes of Steyn and Rabada. If he was to fail, he could be dropped and that would be awful for his confidence so it would be better for him to debut in UAE

I dont have words for the selectors and management for not picking him in SA and now in Aus (management's fault). How can they be so bad.

Should get a chance next game hopefully. Shan hasn’t done much unfortunately. So let’s hope if Abi’s gets a chance he can impress.

I would try him out. 31 isn't that old in the modern world, and maybe he is the 31 who comes in and is very mature to start and scoring runs from day one.

Really bad stuff from Malik and selectors, poor guy has been piling up runs whatever chances he got and has not been give a run. Why Bhanja has to play every single game .

Looking at his stats, he seems like an inferior version of Azhar ali. But let’s see how he goes.

His stats are very good in last 3 years.

But he is more of a test player.

One reason i want him in Odi squad too is he is a makeshift wicket keeper and used to keep for Islamabad.

Would be a good headache if he gets a score of 60+ at a good click if he gets a game. Although his List A and T20 SRs do not inspire alot of confidence. Why is it that we either produce complete laparu type hacks or full on tuk tuks.

Hope he scores decently tomorrow (if given a chance)

Good point. Failure of the system. They should work on aggressive batsmen to improve their defensive techniques and shot selection. Players like asif ali can be destructive if they learn proper shot selection.

Now why wasn't he playing against New Zealand and South Africa ?!

Will never forgive these losers for not selecting Abid vs SA. Heard Mickey was against his selection aswell.
