One World Cup campaign ends, in a rather underwhelming fashion, and the grind for the next begins almost immediately - that's life for the chasing pack in the ODI Super League that guarantees direct qualification to next year's showpiece event in India.

Interestingly, Afghanistan find themselves in one of the direct qualification spots - at seventh with 100 points, 12 ahead of eighth-placed West Indies. But they will need results in the next week to add more cushion to their chances as there seems to be uncertainty about their series against India and Pakistan that are still to be confirmed.

Sri Lanka are on a slightly more slippery slope. They find themselves two spots beneath West Indies, with 62 points. Results in the next three ODIs could have a big bearing on their fate for next year as their only other series is an away tour to New Zealand.

Thus begins a series between two sides that have very little ground to give up and far more to gain. The ever-impressive Afghanistan saw another captain step down following the T20 World Cup this year after citing differences with the selection panel. With less than 12 months left for the big event in India, Afghanistan should take heart from the fact that they now have a steady captain in this format in Hashmatullah Shahidi, who was appointed midway through June 2021. Aiming for better communication and seeking more consistency starts in Pallekele on Friday.

The home side have recently been wounded by off-field issues more than what they've done on the field. They still have the recent success of an Asia Cup victory to use as a springboard and build Dasun Shanaka's side up for the 50-over campaign. For them too, a reset and a fresh start beckons.

When: Sri Lanka vs Afghanistan, 1st ODI, November 25, 2022, 02:30 PM Local time

Where: Pallekele International Cricket Stadium

What to expect: A warm afternoon to start off with, as temperatures could hover closer to 30 degrees. The venue has sided with teams that chase in ODIs, with 19 wins out of 33 games.

Leaving the obnoxious Afghan fans aside and some of their petty players, their rise as a cricketing nation has been nothing short of miraculous.

Afghans are all but through to the World Cup. So basically 2 of WI, SL and RSA will go to the Qualifiers. The poor performances of SL and WI mean that the door is still ajar for the Proteas.

Slow from Afghanistan - not sure what par score is here.

SL have done well to limit Afghans to a low score, at one stage it looked they will get 300. Once the ball is old it is getting difficult to bat, so SL need a strong start here. From Afg side they have Fazal Haq Farooqi who is such a good bowler, if he gets wickets up front then it's game over for SL against the Afghans spinners.

What an innings by ibrhim zardan. They are in to win the series in srilankan soil.Hostory for them

What a run chase by SL, at one stage they looked down and out, it was a terrific performance and a thriller of a game.

Great advertisement for ODI cricket as well.

Afghanistan opener Ibrahim Zadran smashed 162 in the third and final ODI against Sri Lanka in Pallekele, breaking the record for the highest score by a player from his country in this format.

Zadran's epic knock of 162 came off a mere 138 balls and included 15 fours and four sixes. The opener completed his hundred in the 39th over, getting to it off 100 balls before smashing 58 runs off his next 38 balls.

The opener broke the record for the highest individual score by an Afghanistan player in ODIs, beating Mohammad Shahzad's unbeaten 131 against Zimbabwe in 2015.

Zadran already has three hundreds in just eight ODI innings, and is Afghanistan's joint-third-highest century-maker in this format.

Zadran has already racked up 433 runs in 8 ODIs, averaging 61.85 with the bat and converting each of his fifty-plus scores into hundreds. He now has hundreds in three of his last five ODIs.

Afghanistan had already booked their place in the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023 in India with the win in the first ODI of this series.

With 313 on board, their third highest total in ODIs, Afghanistan look well set to notch up a rare away series win.

Charith Asalanka Stars As Sri Lanka Clinch Thriller To Level ODI Series

Charith Asalanka smashed an unbeaten 83 as Sri Lanka pulled off a record chase of 314 to edge out Afghanistan by four wickets in the third one-day international and end the series level at 1-1 on Wednesday. Afghanistan opener Ibrahim Zadran's record 162 -- the highest individual score for the Afghans -- went in vain after he steered the tourists to 313-8 in Pallekele. Sri Lanka were in trouble at 249-6, but the left-handed pair of Asalanka and Dunith Wellalage put on an unbeaten stand of 65 to steer the team home with two balls to spare.

The island nation kept up their hopes of earning a direct entry into next year's ODI World Cup in India with crucial 10 Super League points from the win.

Asalanka, battling cramps during the later half of his 72-ball knock, hit the winning six as the home crowd erupted in joy with the highest-ever chase at the venue.

Wellalage, 19, also kept his calm in his 31 off 21 balls as he smashed Gulbadin Naib for three fours in the 49th over to take some pressure off Asalanka, who refused many doubles as he hopped around.

Afghan spin wizard Rashid Khan returned figures of 4-37.

Sri Lanka had started strongly with openers Pathum Nissanka (35) and Kusal Mendis (67) putting on 101 runs.

Dinesh Chandimal and skipper Dasun Shanaka also made useful contributions of 33 and 43.

Asalanka then put on a 79-run stand with Shanaka as the duo mixed the right dose of caution and aggression.

Rashid broke through to get Shanaka bowled with a googly that rattled the stumps and soon struck his fourth blow as Wanindu Hasaranga walked back caught behind for two before Asalanka and Wellalage took over.

Ibrahim, 20, stood out for Afghanistan, who had earned their automatic qualification for the World Cup with the previous rained off match, with 278 runs including a match-winning 106 in the opener.

He put on 154 runs with the left-handed Najibullah Zadran, who made 77, to rebuild the Afghan innings after three early wickets and put Sri Lanka on the back foot.

The effort was Afghanistan's best fourth-wicket partnership, breaking a 2013 record of 144 between Nawroz Mangal and Samiullah Shinwari against Scotland.

It was Ibrahim's third century in just his eighth ODI and surpassed Afghanistan's previous top score of 131 not out by Mohammad Shahzad.

Ibrahim stood firm to take on the bowlers as he surpassed his previous best of an unbeaten 121 before departing on the final ball of the innings.

He hit 15 fours and four sixes in his 138-ball knock.

Sri Lanka star Wanindu Hasaranga has been reprimanded for breaching the ICC Code of Conduct in the final ODI against Afghanistan.

Wanindu Hasaranga received the official reprimand for breaching the Level 1 ICC Code of Conduct during the final Cricket World Cup Super League match of the series against Afghanistan in Pallekele.

The star all-rounder was found guilty of breaching Article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to "showing dissent at an Umpire’s decision during an International Match." He received one demerit point, his first in a 24-month period, as well as a maximum penalty of 50% of match fees.

Wanindu Hasaranga was unhappy with the LBW decision being overturnedWanindu Hasaranga was unhappy with the LBW decision being overturned
During the match, Najibullah Zadran's LBW decision was overturned during Hasaranga's third over after being given out by the on-field umpire initially. Frustrated at the decision, the 25-year-old pointed at the giant screen.

Hasaranga admitted the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by Ranjan Madugalle of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, thus a formal hearing was not required.

The charges were levelled by on-field umpires Nitin Menon and Lyndon Hannibal, third umpire Raveendra Wimalasari and fourth umpire Ruchira Palliyaguruge.

Sri Lanka pulled off an incredible chase, hunting down down a target of 314 set by Afghanistan. With the win, they levelled the series 1-1 and also moved to ninth in the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup Super League.
