Body of five-year-old girl found from Essa Nagri

(Karachi) In a brutal incident, a five-year-old girl was found dead inside a gunny bag in Essa Nagri area, media reported on Sunday. There were burn injuries on the face of the victim.

As per details, some passers by witnessed the body in a garbage heap on an empty plot in Pir Bukhari colony.

The people immediately informed the police which reached the site and shifted the body to hospital for legal formalities. The victim has been identified as Marwa, who had gone missing from PIB Colony a few days ago. An FIR of her missing was registered at the relevant police station on her father’s complaint.

Meanwhile, the police claimed to have arrested a man and his son during a raid on a house in PIB Colony on suspicion of their involvement in the gruesome incident. The man along with his two sons had moved to the house a few days back.

One of the two sons is at large and a search is underway to locate his whereabouts, the police said.

The police said that the girl had a head injury which apparently led to her death with her face burned to mangle her appearance. The police said they suspect that she might have also been subjected to sexual assault but await a final post-mortem report to ascertain it.

Later, area residents and relatives of the victim took to streets and protested against the police inability to arrest the suspects. The protesters blocked main artery from Jail Chowrangi to Civic Centre and demanded immediate arrest of the criminals.

A police team reached the spot to negotiate with the protesters and assured them the accused will be awarded punishment.

The latest rape and death of a child in Pakistan has prompted a surge of anger on social media.

This article contains references to rape and child abuse.

Angry Pakistanis are demanding justice for a five-year-old girl who was reportedly kidnapped, raped and set ablaze in the city of Karachi.

According to local media, the body of the girl, named as Marwah, was recovered from a garbage heap on 6 September two days after she was reported missing.

An autopsy report seen by local media confirmed she had been sexually assaulted, struck in the head and set alight, and at least one person has been arrested.

It follows the 2018 death of seven-year-old girl Zainab Ansari, whose raped body was also found among garbage near the city of Lahore, sparking waves of protests and accusations of negligence by Pakistani authorities.

According to non-profit child protection organisation Sahil, Pakistan sees nearly 10 cases of child abuse reported each day, most of them affecting girls.

Marwah’s death sparked an outpouring of rage and grief on social media, with many posts using the #JusticeForMarwah hashtag.

“When will this stop?” actress Armeena Khan asked in a Twitter post.

Pakistani international cricketer Shan Masood said it was “high time” to place "the utmost importance” on fighting the scourge of child abuse.

“We cannot lose our youth to such disgusting and inhuman acts. Keeping quiet is contributing to the issue. We must stand up to these cowards and take action,” he said on Twitter.

Footage uploaded to social media also appears to show a group of people protesting in city streets over the incident.

Earlier this year, Pakistan’s parliament passed a law against child abuse which requires police to register a case within two hours of a child’s parents reporting them missing.

The anger over Marwah's death comes days after thousands of Islamist protesters rallied across Pakistan over a French magazine's decision to republish cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed.

Charlie Hebdo, the target of a 2015 terror massacre, reprinted the controversial images last week to mark the beginning of the trial of the alleged accomplices in the attack.

Police detain 12 suspects in girl’s rape-cum-murder case

KARACHI: Police on Monday detained a dozen suspects in the rape-cum-murder case of a five-year-old girl in PIB Colony on Sunday and expanded the scope of the investigation by collecting DNA samples of the suspects.

Area residents who blocked the main University Road for hours on Sunday have given a three-day ultimatum to the authorities for arrest of the culprits.

Separately, Opposition Leader in the Sindh Assembly Firdous Shamim Naqvi with several MPAs of the PTI met the family of the deceased girl and assured them of raising the issue before higher authorities for the provision of justice.

The Karachi police chief, Additional Inspector General Ghulam Nabi Memon, told Dawn that “we are working on it but so far the accused has not been identified”.

Mr Memon added: “All efforts are directed to carry out DNA of the suspects.”

According to relatives, the girl came out of her home near old Sabzi Mandi on Friday at around 7am to buy biscuits from a neighbouring shop when she was kidnapped. The family lodged her missing report at the police station the same day. Her body wrapped in a piece of cloth was found on a garbage dump in the same locality early on Sunday morning.

Police surgeon Dr Qarar Ahmed Abbasi said that the minor girl was subjected to criminal assault before being murdered. He said she suffered head injuries caused by hard and blunt instruments. The police surgeon said that she was not torched.

On Sunday, police detained a suspect, said to be a neighbour, whose DNA samples were taken and sent to a lab at Karachi University.

A delegation of PTI lawmakers led by Mr Naqvi on Monday visited the area and met the family.

PTI legislator Jamal Siddiqi, who is elected from the same locality and was part of the delegation, told Dawn that DIG-East Nouman Siddiqi informed them that over a dozen persons had been detained for interrogation whose DNA samples had also been taken and sent to the KU lab to see if they were involved in the gruesome incident.

The lawmaker revealed that the investigators had still not received the lab report of the one suspect who was detained on Sunday. He said they assured the grieving family that they would take up this issue before the Sindh chief minister and inspector general of police, and justice would be served.

The PTI lawmaker said that it was a highly congested locality from where the girl was kidnapped. It was not possible for outsiders to go there and kidnap the girl, said the lawmaker.

Mr Siddiqi criticised the police for the “traditional manner” with which they dealt with the kidnapping case of the girl and did not take it seriously when the FIR was lodged by the family.

what was the poor girls crime? Why can't the law makers wake up and make strict laws against pedophiles.

Just feel so bad for the poor girl.

Man who raped-murdered Marwah arrested, claim Karachi police

KARACHI: Police on Wednesday claimed to have apprehended the alleged perpetrator behind the rape and murder of five-year-old Marwah in Essa Nagri neighbourhood, ARY NEWS reported.

It is pertinent to mention here that police officials found a five-year-old girl missing since two days stuffed inside a gunny bag in the port city’s Essa Nagri neighbourhood on Saturday late night. She was identified as Marwah.

According to police, the accused identified as Nawaz, was arrested after evidence collected by the police matched with his belongings. “A piece of cloth from the accused’s home was found from the garbage heap where Marwa was found dead a week back,” the law enforcement authority said.

They said that the accused lives nearby Marwa’s home and during a raid at his home, the police found his home washed properly raising concerns among the investigating team.

He is shifted to an undisclosed location as investigators announce to lead the probe on the basis of forensic evidence.

Earlier in the day, it was reported that police investigators have started using geofencing technology in Marwah rape and murder case for ascertaining the location of suspects detained by the security officials over suspicion of their involvement in the cold-blooded incident in Karachi.

The investigators told media that geofencing of the detained persons will help the police department to track the suspects’ locations. Police officials said that a ‘prime suspect’, Nawaz, is being interrogated who is consistently changing its statements time by time.

They added that Nawaz has failed to provide satisfactory answers to the investigators so far which increased the suspicions of his involvement in the brutal rape and murder of the five-year-old girl. Police claimed that many evidence is also indicating the involvement of the prime suspect.

I saw her parents/relatives on TV. I am physically and emotionally drained. What has happened to us. Is this why our ancestors got us this country. This and now the motorway accident in the span of a couple of days. This will continue to happen unless the wolves are stoned to death in public as a moral for every one.

Rapes of Woman and 5-Year-Old Fuel Outrage in Pakistan

The girl’s burned body was found two days later. The woman was dragged from her car. The two cases have focused the country’s attention on its handling of sexual abuse.

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — A 5-year-old girl in southern Pakistan was raped, hit on the head and set on fire. Five days later, a woman in the country’s east was dragged from her car and sexually assaulted on a highway in front of her children.

The two episodes, which occurred hundreds of miles apart, have prompted protests and an outpouring of rage in a country that critics say has a toxic culture surrounding sexual assaults and child abuse.

Hashtags calling for justice for the victims have been shared widely on social media by ordinary people, opposition politicians and high-profile athletes, including Shan Masood, a member of Pakistan’s national cricket team.

“We cannot lose our youth to such disgusting and inhuman acts,” Mr. Masood wrote on Twitter. “Keeping quiet is contributing to the issue. We must stand up to these cowards and take action.”

Pakistan has been plagued by episodes of rape and child abuse over the years. Victims are often treated as criminals or blamed for the assaults. Human rights activists have long said that officials at all levels of the national government have regularly failed to address the issue in a comprehensive way.

“There is a lot of indifference” to such cases from Pakistani officials, said Mehnaz Akber Aziz, a member of the opposition in Pakistan’s National Assembly and a prominent children’s rights advocate. “There is no empathy, only silence. That is changing, because the public is pushing back.”

Ms. Aziz said that most of the child rape and abuse victims come from small towns or villages, and their cases do not usually catch fire on social media. Officials generally do not visit them either, she said, and perpetrators are often quietly released after public outrage has subsided — lending a sense of impunity after the crimes.

“You are signaling to these people, the rapists, that ‘It’s OK, you can continue doing what you’re doing and there will be a way out, even if you’re arrested,’” she said.

But she said that the public rage over the girl’s killing was the largest groundswell of anger in a case of child rape and murder that she had seen on social media in recent memory — outrage that has had the government scrambling to respond.

The girl was kidnapped last Friday after going to buy cookies at a shop in the southern port city of Karachi, the police said. Her body was found two days later, and an autopsy indicated that she had been sexually assaulted.

The police have arrested more than 20 suspects in the case, and investigators said on Wednesday that one had admitted to kidnapping and murder.

In the second case, the woman was driving late Tuesday night with her three children from Lahore, the provincial capital of Punjab Province, to the city of Gujranwala, when her car ran out of fuel. She called the police, and as she waited for assistance, two men, both believed to be in their 30s, broke the driver’s-side window with sticks and stones and dragged her and her children off the road.

The woman was raped multiple times, and the men stole her A.T.M. cards, jewelry and cash, the police said. The Lahore police chief, Muhammad Umar Sheikh, later said that an extensive search for the culprits was underway.

But the police chief also appeared to blame the woman for the crime, questioning why she had been traveling late at night without an adult male companion, and why she had not checked to see that her car had enough fuel for the journey.

The backlash was swift.

Social media users — writing under the hashtag #motorwayincident — several leading politicians, television talk show hosts and celebrities called for him to be fired.

“If a top police officer can openly engage in victim blaming imagine how junior policemen treat rape survivors,” Ailia Zehra, a Pakistani journalist, wrote on Twitter on Thursday. “THIS is why women don’t report sexual crimes.”

Shireen Mazari, the minister for human rights in Prime Minister Imran Khan’s cabinet, condemned the comments by the police chief, who serves in a province that is controlled by Mr. Khan’s governing party. “Nothing can ever rationalize the crime of rape,” she wrote on Twitter. “That’s it.”

Dr. Mazari did not immediately respond to a request for comment early on Friday.

Reacting to both cases, Mr. Khan said in a series of tweets on Thursday that officials would bring the perpetrators to justice. “Such brutality and bestiality cannot be allowed in any civilized society,” Mr. Khan said.

Pakistan ranks 147th out of the 182 countries that have ratified the U.N. Convention on the Rights of the Child, according to an index on children’s well-being published by the KidsRights Foundation, a research and advocacy group in the Netherlands. The index measures the prevalence of child labor and rates of mortality and malnutrition, among other criteria.

Pakistan’s consistently poor ranking in the survey proves that “policymakers and state machinery in Pakistan have utterly ignored welfare and rights of children,” Ms. Aziz, the opposition lawmaker and children’s rights advocate, wrote last year in The News International, a major English-language daily in Pakistan.

Some sexual assault cases in the country have led to calls for a national reckoning.

In 2015, Pakistan was rocked by accusations that at least 280 children under the age of 14 in villages in eastern Punjab Province had been subjected to sexual abuse by a gang of 15 men, who made videos to extort money from the children and their parents.

More recently, the case of Muhammad Faizan, an 8-year-old boy who was raped and killed in the eastern Pakistani city of Chunian, drew more outrage and protests. People surrounded the local police station and accused officers of neglect.

There are signs that the country is moving to tackle the issue.

Under legislation that Parliament passed in March, anyone who kidnaps, rapes or murders a minor can face life imprisonment or the death penalty. On Friday, Ms. Aziz said that the measure should be the start of a broad array of reforms to promote child welfare.

But to her knowledge, Ms. Aziz said, no one had been prosecuted under the legislation so far.

Salman Masood reported from Islamabad, Pakistan, and Mike Ives from Hong Kong.

KARACHI: The case of Marwah, a five-year-old who was gang-raped and killed in the city's Essa Nagri area, made important progress on Thursday after the fingerprints found on her clothes matched with the DNA of one of the suspects, Faizu, on Wednesday.

Once the police obtain the DNA reports, they will hold a press conference to share the details of the case with the public, sources said.

Both suspects — Faizu and Abdullah — have confessed to raping and murdering the five-year-old, sources said.

Faizu lives near Marwah's house and worked as a tailor, while Abdullah — an Afghan national — used to pick trash.

Faizu abducted the minor girl and took him to his house's rooftop where both the suspects allegedly gang-raped her.

Police arrested both suspects, according to sources, who revealed that the cloth in which Marwah's body was found wrapped in had been taken from Faizu's shop.
