Ahmed Shehzad - A star in the making

Yep, he has played very well in T20s ever since his comeback.

His ODI career is hanging by a thread though.
 
Minnow bashers having a great day :hafeez and :ahmed :p

Good score again by Shehzad, though again many of his shots were poor. Specially when he tried to improvise, looked crap :/ Umar does that beautifully.
 
Hafeez ate too many balls in the last 3/4 overs :/

^^ yeah he did, but i'm sure Shehzad will rather Pak get more runs than him get a century, he batted beautifully
 
Absolutely awesome and stunning talent. Just 21! He will dominate world cricket for the next decade.

First of all shehzad is not a minnow basher. So you are wrong.

Second, umar akmal is a middle order batsman and no i have seen umar getting many times out doing his improvisation thing.

Good knock but you should take it with a grain of salt. Mamoons point stands till the day Shehzad performs like this against a top team.
 
Good knock but I'm not convinced until he can pull off big knocks against the better side. He will become a mainstay in our T20 side but really don't think he's good enough for ODIs. Will be found out with the full outswinging delivery as he has poor footwork and his gameplay is mostly based on premeditation.

I didn't knew you were this thick.

When did I pinpoint his T20 performances? they don't change the fact that he averages 26 in ODIs with a strike rate of 67 which is less than the guy you call cancer to Pakistan cricket - Misbah.

He has always done well in T20s but he has been rubbish in ODIs.
 
number of hundreds doesn't mean much when your average is low.

Hussey has 3 hundreds but he's one of the best ODI batsman ever while Tharanga has 13 hundreds but he is still an average opener.

Shehzad has more hundreds than Umar Akmal but the latter is miles better.

Shehzad will be better in ODIs than T20s. He has that rare ability for an opener to stay not out for the long haul. Today, 20 overs, 40 overs against WI and 30+ against NZ.

I don't remember Farhat scoring these type of knocks at 150 SR when he was 21 :misbah

I have always compared his ODI performances with Farhat.

Show me one post where I have compared the T20 performances of Farhat and Shehzad.


He is the next Farhat/Hafeez = TTF in ODIs but he is a good T20 player.

Stop banging on about t20s until he translates that form in ODIs he'll always remain a t20 specialist who couldn't cut it at ODI level. Of course this game should be taken with a grain of salt, first of all it's a t20 and second it's against Zimbabwe.
 
Let him perform in ODI cricket against non minnows, we can make a decision after that. As of now he averages 25.91 at an SR of 65.56 in 24 ODI innings.

Guys reserve your judgement for the next series. It is zimbabwe and hafeez has just scored a 50 so you know the bowling is mediocre.
 
All his innings of note in international cricket have come against relatively weak attacks. May be good enough for the fanboys but anybody sensible or who has high standards won't hold their breath until he does this against class attacks. Good that he's keeping Farhat out atm though.
 
Good innings but please lets not get overexcited, even Imran Nazir has a 168 against Zim. But with that being said still credit to Ahmed for todays knock.

he just needs to perform in ODIs regardless of the opposition and the venue.

Yep, what happens is that he misses a loose delivery and then attacks a ball which deserves respect because of his premeditation.

Also, he needs to improve his front foot play. Stand and hit policy won't work against 2 new balls and that too in the next World Cup in Australia.
 
very happy for Shehzad, he has done well, this is why if you identify a talent then you should persist with him.

Not getting carried away though but he has done well enough to give himself a longer run and this will do his confidence a world of good!
 
I think he deserves a run of at least 10 ODI matches before a decision is made on him.

The only problem I see with him in the T20 format is his approach at the beginning of the innings. He starts very slow, sometimes even slower than run a ball, and then accelerates after crossing 30 odd runs.

Today he scored 12 of 19 balls during PP overs and thats just not good enough. And against better oppositions he would have to take full advantage of PP overs, as chances are he might dismissed before he even goes into attack mode.
 
So Shehzad is scoring runs but some people are still finding reasons to whine. :))

If he had failed to score in both matches, these same bunch of fellows would be crucifying the lad. So what is it?

Glad he scored some much needed runs, his confidence has definitely picked up since scoring that 64 in the last ODI vs WI. Needs to cash in now in the ODIs as well to cement his spot for good. Does need to improve his middle game.

Actually, that's why I think he is a better ODI player. He has every shots in the book & has the knack of converting starts. His ODI average & SR actually is poor because in a short career, lot of times he has tried to go after very early. What he needs a run of ODI (say next 13) with the confidence of not been dropped, what's so ever. If he plays all of next 13 ODI, my hunch is he 'll score 3 hundreds, all of them match winning.

He starts off selfishly. He is being very clever. Something I want Shahzaib to take note of.

:)) selfishly? Are you blind? He does it for the team and everything he does is for the team. Gets him self set and he KNOWS he will stay at the wicket.

He likes staying out there for long which is a great sign but needs to work on his game against (quality) spinners. He also needs to improve his front foot play, these slogs over midwicket won't do against quality bowling.

Having said that, its a treat watching him field #BestWe'veEverHad

yes, apart from his batting Shehzad is a world class fielder, after a very long time I have seen such a fantastic fielder in the Pakistani side, he is brilliant in the field!!!
 
well this was a brilliant knock... missed the entire match but that 98 was very good. too bad he didnt get a hundred though. he still has weaknesses like premeditation but hopefully he will work it out. we will see how he improves in the ODI and the next series....

Other than 4 ODIs against Australia and 1 against Sri Lanka I don't think he had faced any non-minnows.

1 T20 vs Australia, England and South Africa each. 2 each against Sri Lanka and India
 
^ West Indies, if you include them in 'non-minnows'. Was terrible in ODIs, except the last one.

Sledger mentioned that all his significant international scores have been against minnows. He has a century against West Indies.

He definitely needs to develop his game, if he wants to be a regular in ODIs.

LOL! He was selfish in India. He was selfish in WI also. Zimbawbe's attack is much poorer than our domestic teams. And Ahmed uses the power plays very aggressively in domestic. But in both the T20s, He didn't utilized the PPs. He started off selfishly just to save his spot.

Why? This performance keeps him in the T20 side.

He should be ultimately dropped from ODIs if he fails against such a weak team in ODI series.

That is favouritism. On merit, he should be dropped IF he fails against such a poor bowling line up. (ODIs Only)

And I heard that PCB will not renew his contract with Dav? :P

Always backed him since the under 19 days , a lot of positives in his batting .
Can play big innings . Has a great eye , plays pace very well , Best fielder in the side .excellent player of short bowling .

Needs work on his footwork when the ball is swinging , needs to back himself more often ( goes into his shell ) , needs a bit of improvement when playing quality spin .If he puts on a bit of muscle he could be hitting gayle like sixes , clean striker :afridi

Much better than the likes of farhat , latif and shahzaib etc .About time he is more consistent in ODI cricket , has the all the ability in the world , this should give him confidence.

He got out always early to utilize the PPs. Shahzaib failed in T20s likewise Shehzad is a failure in ODIs uptill now.


Shahzaib averages 33 and Sr is 88. Whereas Shehzad's average is 24 and Sr 65 (ODIs). Universal FACT!

no, Ahmed seems nice, Kohli is an arrogant ****. They do look like each other though
 
An average of 25.8 with a strike rate of 65.

22 out of his 25 innings have resulted in scores of less than 50.

His averages against respective countries:

1 against Kenya

12 against Canada

13 against Sri Lanka

16 vs Zimbabwe

25 vs West Indies

39 vs New Zealand

A nothing player with glaring deficiencies who is well on his way of becoming a certified TTF in ODIs.

Its all cool and okay to be a Kohli wannabe, but copying his style, aggression and attitude counts for nothing when you don't even have 1% of his batting ability.
 
He needs to go he can carry on in the t20s but not good enough at ODI level.
 
No player is a finished article at 21 unless you are Tendulkar but the ingredients need to be there.

Shehzad does not have the ingredients of a world class batsman, which some one like Umar Akmal has and in my opinion, Babar Azam, Haris Sohail and Maqsood have as well.

Well said despite only having one hundred its obvious Umar is much better.

Doing the same thing in ODI as well.
 
Proving himself to be a T20 slogger only.

AND WORST than Farhat in ODIs.

This is not what an opener should be! If he doesn't perform in this series, bring in another consistent domestic opener for SA series.
 
give him this series, if he fails, it's time to bring back someone else, and knowing the Pakistani selectors, it could well be Kamran Akmal, cos no one knows if Umar Akmal can keep or not, and Kamran is much better as an opener
