What's new

Ahmed Shehzad's signs of poor behavior continues

Back to the drawing board then.

Was dropped after the last World Cup and restricted to T20s for a year. Four years later, dropped after the World Cup and restricted to T20s only.

Of all the formats to drop him from, it ain't Test matches where he's got a 47 average. And you want to drop him for disciplinary issues then don't pick him for ANY format !

PCB are so inconsistent in their selection policies. They drop Azhar Ali from ODIs for 2 years and is not even in WC squad, then is made captain. Shehzad is not suited to T20s at all yet he's kept in the squad. Babar Azam is being thrown into Tests rather than being gradually blooded into the team through ODIs and T20s.

None of this makes sense - this is what happens when you have 3 different captains for 3 formats, there's no joined up thinking or planning. What a mess.

Message and lesson for him today :-

Carry on as you are and you will also be dropped from the T20I squad.

The ball is in your court !

I hate using statistics to prove my point, because there really is no substitute to watching the game, and anyone who has watched Shehzad since his return in July 2013 can testify his worth (or lack of) to the ODI team.

Excluding Bangladesh and Zimbabwe, this is the performance of the openers of Test playing nations in the same period. I have chosen minimum 20 matches to exclude outliers, such as a particular player having a great series or a very poor one. 20 matches just seems to be the right figure, but you can also make it 25 or 30 or even 15.

Meanwhile, Shehzad has played 46 matches in the same time period.

So his Strike Rate is better than Cook only who was dropped by England as captain. Everyone else has a better average and Strike Rate barring K. Perera and Moeen.

22.8 @84 is definitely worse than 37.7 @73, but not many people will take 37.7 @73 over 32.8 @100.6

Like I said in an earlier post (which seems to have been deleted), he only has a case of making the Sri Lankan team who have issues with their second opener, which effectively makes him one of the worst opener in world cricket excluding associates and teams like Bangladesh and Zimbabwe.

This is supposed to be the best period and purple patch of his career so far, and even in his best period, he's well behind the pack.

Players like Shehzad is the reason why if persisted with, Pakistan will remain a sub-standard, mediocre ODI team and will not do better than 5th or 6th in terms of ranking, because he is mediocre in every sense of the word.

The scariest bit is that he might as well be the best opener we have, which is scary and sums up Pakistan cricket and its bleak future. If that's true than you cannot drop him based on performance, performance that is nothing compared to other openers.

I would expect his strike rate to increase to about 80 if he is persisted with. I do think he is talented and has potential and certainly better than the likes of Khalid Latif, Imran Farhat, Nasir Jamshed, Imran Nazir, Kamran Akmal that we have seen in the last few years.

Our new captain has an even lower strike rate than Shehzad yet people want him to open our innings....

IMO - it is unfair to drop him based on this Twitter nonsense. However, if the reports about him having an attitude problem are true - then I hope he does some self reflection, for his own sake atleast.

Azhar will definitely average around the 40 mark, and I'd back him to up his Strike Rate to 75. No doubt in my mind that Azhar is a better batsman.

This is the third time he has been dropped due to his attitude. Clearly PCB's patience with him will run out very soon. There is no cure for being an idiot.

He will open for us in the World T20 that's why he has been selected and will continue to be selected. Mark my words.

Carry on as you are?

So score hundreds and you will be dropped. Seems fair! :)

How many hundreds out of how many innings against which weak/strong opposition?

And how many fights with how many journalists and coaches? Yeah, it's pretty fair :)

Maybe the t20 will help him understand urgency of strike rate.

Shehzad is a way better bat than Azhar.

I am sorry but there is just no argument there.

His attitude is another thing. Rightfully dropped and I hope he learns a lesson from this.

Kaptaan will prove his doubters wrong and end up as a Pakistani great. :azhar

No one will remember Shehzad in 10 years time.

Shouldn't be Shehzad vs Azhar.

Azhar is my favourite batsman in test and has been since 2010.

I have watched EVERY ball of his test career. Some find him boring but I don't. I absolutely LOVE watching Azhar Ali, more then Umar Akmal or any others tbh.

So glad this moron has been dropped from ODIs. Getting too big for his boots and not backing it up with performances.

OK, seems like he will NEVER learn anything.

First, he's hell bent on saying "he's right, others are wrong". Tweets saying "never change yourself for anything". Surely this guy doesn't give a damn about improving and does not respect the shirt he wears?

And secondly, he's now retweeting Chris Gayle tweet directly lashing out at PCB for dropping this "TALENT"...

What is he made of?

Do we want another Afridi?

Hes far worse. Afridi at his prime was still a pretty handy player. This clown cant get into a county side...

Chris Gayle on Ahmed Shehzad "dont waste this talent"

it doesn't matter. he should go back to domestic and work on his shortcomings.

Amazing that contracted players continue to show up PCB - am guessing a show cause round the corner.

Oh please that tweet is not in reply to Gayle's tweet. Don't put them together. You don't know what the tweet was about. He also said stay humble.

He favourited another one which said Shame on PCB they are a joke.

Maybe its his nephew...

Gayle has always rated Shehzad very highly. I think they batter together in the Windies t20 league. I agree with Gayle - massive talent now being treated badly. Yes he didn't have a strong World Cup but neither did several others. His sacking from test cricket is completely unjustifiable.

Shehzad should not have been dropped from the test side, that was very silly and illogical.

Where did I say "never change yourself" was in reply to Gayle's tweet? It wasn't. It's most probably in response to what PCB/Team management is asking him to do: CHANGE HIS ATTITUDE... become responsible, learn from mistake, improve himself.

But he thinks he has already achieved everything and is a super talented bat, so he don't need to improve or change.

He retweeted Gayle's tweet, which is very immature, but not related to the other.

"Never change" is such an idiotic attitude for a professional sports player. It's not like you're some religious minority being persecuted and you're standing firm in your beliefs. You're a cricket player with a horrible attitude who refuses to learn and adapt, no matter how many chances you're given. That doesn't make you a hero, that makes you selfish. Afridi and Shehzad's "me-first" attitude is frankly unpatriotic.

Compare him to someone like Fawad Alam, who has been treated like crap and still continues to be positive, humble, and gracious. What an immature tweet, combined with his favorites.

Afridi is really wearing off all my little remaining good wishes for him. Good riddance on his captaincy very soon.

Great post.

Off topic but I read somewhere Fawad turned his phone off when he was omitted for the world cup as he was upset and just didn't want to speak to anyone. Compared to Mr Social media on here its a great contrast and shows the marked difference in dare I say it not just maturity but upbringing and pride for your country.

We need players like him....

Did anyone watch Ahmed shahzad at post match presentation in ongoing one day tournament
i cant beleive he is made captain . immature comments and trying to copy afridi body language
first of all he explains everything in so much detail which isnt needed at post match presentation
then he blames bowlers and his players openly
then he goes on to also say that PCB should check are these players fit to play for this tournament and have the required skills.
after that he complains we dont have enough time to gel togther
then his next point we dont have impact players

1st of all why talk in english?!
Also such a drama queen.
He himself first needs to the basics right and then talk about others.

I dont see anything wrong in what he said. Shouldnt PCB conduct fitness trials before inducting players for the domestic one day cup? Also, there are people who have issues when sarfraz has linguial issues calling him classless and then when our players speak eloquently that crowd still has issues.

he is talking like he is Misbah or Afridi or Younis . these kind of comments coming from player who himself has been failure doesnt seem good. wonder how he is in dressing room with his subordinates
he basically is saying some of his team mates arent good enough .how about him
indirectly he says my bowlers are useless . in last match presentation

well .. ppers here always use to complain about pcb announcing teams just before tournament and all..
so he is just stating what you guys were complaining about that its not easy to gel together in this short period of time.

Its the same for all teams.
The tournament has been a good one.

According to a media report, Shehzad was fined 40% of his match fee during the Pakistan Cup.

It was due to an incident during the KP vs Balochistan match. Shehzad was run out due to a misunderstanding with batting partner Rizwan Hussain, which lead to his using 'uncivilised language' towards his partner. The umpires took notice of that and he was fined 40% of his match fee.
