A magnificent unbeaten double-century by Alistair Cook has helped him to finish the year inside the top 10 of the latest MRF Tyres ICC Player Rankings for Test Batsmen, which were released today following the conclusion of the Melbourne and Port Elizabeth Tests.

The 33-year-old left-handed opener scored 244 in his side’s first innings score of 491, which has helped him to rise nine places to eighth position. He will now start 2018 with South Africa’s seventh-ranked Hashim Amla firmly within his sights, who is 17 points ahead of the former England captain.

Cook had begun the year in 15th position, while he had entered the Ashes in 10th position.

Meanwhile, Steve Smith’s contributions of 76 and 102 not out have not only strengthened his position at the top of the table but also given him sole possession of second place for the highest-ever ranking points.

For his efforts in Melbourne, Smith earned two points and is now 14 points behind Don Bradman (961) and two points ahead of Len Hutton (945) in the all-time list.

England captain Joe Root is the other batsman to improve his ranking, when he moved up one place to join his opposite number from New Zealand, Kane Williamson, in fourth place. Root and Williamson had started 2017 in third and fourth positions, respectively.

Australia opener David Warner is sixth, 24 points behind Root and Williamson, after his scores of 103 and 86 earned him 30 points. Warner had started 2017 in fifth position.

In the MRF Tyres ICC Player Rankings for Test Bowlers, there is no change in the top nine with England’s James Anderson leading the field. Anderson had started the year on 810 points in sixth position and has finished on 892 points in number-one spot.

The spin trio of Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Rangana Herath had started 2017 in the top three positions, and have finished at third, fourth and sixth places, respectively, while Australia’s Josh Hazlewood started and finished in fifth spot.

The only change in the top 10 is the return of South Africa fast bowler Morne Morkel in 10th position. The 33-year-old claimed five for 21 in Zimbabwe’s first innings for which he has been rewarded with a rise of three places, which has now put him one place ahead of Dale Steyn. It is for the first time in nearly two years that Morkel is within the top 10.

Morkel’s team-mate Keshav Maharaj, who took five for 59 in Zimbabwe’s second innings, has gained two places and is now at a career-high 16th position.

Outside the top 20, Chris Woakes of England and Australia’s Pat Cummins have moved up three places each. Woakes is now in 28th place, while Cummins is now ranked 36th.

Shakib Al Hasan of Bangladesh is the number-one ranked all-rounder and he is followed by India’s Ravichandran Ashwin.

Conseqeuences of playing less Tests I suppose.

The rankings of Pakistan's so-called two best players sums up where we stand in Test cricket today.

It is good to be positive sometimes. Why have you never mentioned Hasan Ali or Babar Azam's one day rankings or Imad's T20 ranking and that singnifying where we are in LOI's under those threads?

T20 rankings are irrelevant. We are a mediocre T20 team but have managed to reach the top thanks to beating some lowly teams this year. Our batting is still poor and we will struggle to post 150+ against pace-heavy teams. Won't look too much into Imad's ranking because T20 rankings fluctuate a lot.

Hasan is undoubtedly the best ODI bowler at the moment and Babar is a very good ODI batsman but #4 is a little high at this point. He is top 10 material, but there are quite a few batsmen superior to him.

The Champions Trophy was a flash in the pan and our so-called resurgence in ODI cricket has not been properly tested by the big teams yet, but it is not surprising to see that are best ODI players are ranked higher than our best Test players.

Our ODI team is nothing special, but it is still considerably better than our current Test team which is awful.

Can’t wait for our “mediocre” ODI team and “awful” test team to prove everyone wrong in 2018.

Anderson is surely the only England bowler to hold the number one Test ranking for more than a few weeks. He has been there for a while now - his career average and strike rate both continue to drop while his wicket tally continues to go up. Very impressive.

Steve Smith has now got the 2nd highest peak of any batsman in history. Still 14 points behind the Don. Don't think he will reach that as he only got 2 points from the recent Test.

Good player and played a good innings. It will be interesting to see if he follows this up with another good performance in Sydney.

Paksitsan tops the chart in T20, T20 ranking is irrelevant.

Only one Pakistani is there in top 10 in Test(even in top 20), that shows the current status of the team, fair enough.
But when Misbah and Younis were in top 10 and Azhar, Asad and Sarfraz were there in between 11 to 20, there were arguments that they have boosted their rankings by playing in UAE.
People need to realise 2 of the best batsmen of the team have retired it will take time for the new team to settle in and start winning the matches. Againsts Sri Lanka it wasn't that Paksitsan were completely dominated and trashed, yes Paksitsan lost both the tests but there is no need to be paranoid about it. The team will eventually start winning.

As far as one day team is considered, the future looks good. A lot of youngsters have shown that they can perform at the international stage, some of the extra luggage (Umar Ajmal and Ahmed Shehzad) have been left behind (well that's a relief). They have a good leader now.
This New Zealand tour is going to give a proper measure of where the team is standing at the moment even a 3-2 victory over New Zealand in their own yard would mean a lot for the young team.

I feel that Usman Shinwari's injury is a major setback, the way he swung the ball in UAE I expected him to have a very good tour, and to top that up even Imad is injured.

Undeserving.. Anderson deserved it though, the only successful performer in the series.
