Alex Hales, James Vince, Chris Lynn & Tymal Mills amongst players who leave PSL due to Coronavirus

Update: HBL PSL 2020 to continue as planned

Karachi, 13 March 2020:

The Pakistan Cricket Board, as part of the normal process, held a conference call with the team owners on Friday morning. The following are the outcomes:

• The HBL Pakistan Super League 2020 will proceed as planned, including tonight’s Multan Sultans versus Peshawar Zalmi match, which will commence at the National Stadium at 8pm

• The match will be played behind closed doors and only event accredited personnel will be allowed to enter the venue

• All players and players support personnel have been given the option to withdraw from the HBL PSL 2020 should they wish to do so.

• The following players have to date confirmed they will not take any further part in the HBL PSL 2020:

 Karachi Kings – Alex Hales

 Multan Sultans – Rilee Rossouw and James Vince

 Peshawar Zalmi – Tom Banton, Carlos Brathwaite, Liam Dawson, James Foster (coach), Lewis Gregory and Liam Livingstone

 Quetta Gladiators – Jason Roy and Tymal Mills

• As per the event regulations, the teams will be allowed player replacements, which will have to be approved by the Event Technical Committee

• The PCB will continue to assess and monitor the situation and make decisions as appropriate in consultation with the team owners

• No player has to date tested positive for Coronavirus

• No discussion has taken place as yet with regards to the upcoming Pakistan Cup One-Day Tournament and home international matches against Bangladesh

PCB Chief Executive Wasim Khan said: “This remains an evolving and unprecedented situation with a number of moving parts that require constant and regular monitoring.

“Today, the PCB and the team owners, as part of their duty of care, have decided to give all the players the option to decide if they wish to return home. Ensuring that the players feel comfortable remains paramount to the PCB.

“As of now, it is important to emphasise and clarify that the main concern of many of the 10 players and a coach, who have chosen to return home, revolves around avoiding a potential situation where they might become stranded either due to flight cancellations or border closures in their own countries.

“The PCB will facilitate their safe return and will ensure the same for all of the players and support staff personnel who decide to withdraw from HBL PSL 2020.

“As stated previously, we will continue to assess and review the situation and will not hesitate to make what we believe are the right decisions for everyone involved.”

PCB to facilitate safe return of four Islamabad United players

Karachi, 13 March 2020:

Following the Pakistan Cricket Board’s decision to provide an option to squad members to withdraw from the ongoing HBL Pakistan Super League 2020, four Islamabad United players and a member of the coaching staff have decided to return home.

United players Colin Munro, Dale Steyn, Dawid Malan and Luke Ronchi and trainer Corey Rutgers will not take any further part in the tournament.

As such, the PCB will facilitate their safe return and United, who play their last group match against Karachi Kings on 14 March at the National Stadium, can bring in the players’ replacements following the Event Technical Committee’s approval, as per the HBL PSL 2020 regulations.

Foreign player update from Karachi Kings

With New Zealand closing its borders, team management had a discussion with its star Kiwi and superb teammate, Mitchell McClenaghan, and it was decided it would be best for him to get back home safely as soon as possible.

The Kings organization wishes Mitch all the best for the future and most of all, a safe, healthy return home.

Sane decision.

PSL should just have been cancelled to avoid embarrassment.

We held the tournament. Was a success. Move on.

Sources tell us that PSL teams in discussions and situation is a little fluid at the moment.

No need to discuss over it. They should reach their homeland. Corona beast should be taken seriously and with concrete conviction.

Pakistan and foreign lives are the same - PSL should be stopped or title awarded to whoever is leading with agreement of all.

Major football leagues and Uefa competitions are being suspended that have the most advance medical facilities in sports and they couldn't prevent Coronavirus. Then how can Pakistan stop Coronavirus?

Edit: I'll be happy if PSL winner title is awarded to Multan Sultans. They deserve it.

Australia - New Zealand matches are played in front of empty stadiums. PSL should follow this for the remainder of the season, which ends in like 10 days or so.

Everyone of us is at risk. Asymptomatic Carriers are the individuals who have Virus but have not shown any symptoms but can transmit virus to others. We don't know who among us is an asymptomatic carrier.

Everyone deserves to be with their loved ones in times like this. So they should reach their homeland. A country can block all travels at ANYTIME and foreigners will be trapped for an indefinite period. Pakistani players don't have this dilemma so they can play.

From Quetta Gladiators Media:

We can confirm that none of our foreign players has demanded to go back so far and everything is normal in Quetta Gladiators’ camp.

I think it shld be PCB+PSL committee taking the decision

some players leaving and some remaining leaves a bad taste

we have had a beautiful emotional even till date... no1 can fight the nature ..... so PCB and the security forces, and most of all, the crowd should feel proud for what they have achieved

but sane thing will be suspend the psl and mark it as victory to the PSL rather than any team.

This is most frustrating, PCB have done everything to host a succesful tournament and its been ages since we have had this many foreign players coming to pakistan but its completely out of everyones hands what has happened and unfortunetly this is the nature of how things are going to be over the next little bit with major sporting events hosting matches in emoty stadiums.

Its frustrating for PCB, for the fans and for everyone involved.

They keep embarrassing us!

How are they embarrassing us? The UK that probably has more cases currently diagnosed then pakistan is carrying on as normal, premiership is yet to be cancelled, schools business are still going on, this is a sensitive situation and to date the PCB have handled it well, let the players decide if they want to continue, of course if it gets worse cancel it.

Are you even for real?

Even SL vs eng series just got canceled. IPL is canceled.

Every freaking sports event in the world is getting canceled.

NBA is cancelled.

What is PSL?

You don't care about your own players and country people?
Pathetic.

PCB and PSL management, what a disgrace.

In UK you are far more prone to be hit by the Coronavirus than Pakistan. Good luck to the English players going back!

That is definetly the right decision.

However, I don't see any issue with continuing the competition behind closed doors.

PCB has achieved what they wanted to achieve and that was to show Pak is completely safe to carry cricket related activities. Unless the world is ending PSL has already made its mark in a Pakistan and we are gonna see numerous international stars coming in for future seasons.

Same is the case with international cricket, after so many series and such a mega event there is no excuse left for anybody.

You are confusing different scenarios. Its easier to cancel events which havent yet started then the one which is already 80% there.

Its only a week left for the tournament..playing in closed doors like aussie and nz are doing is the option..

If they feel that they should be with their family members at this critical time, then they have taken the right decision.

That being said, European countries are struggling even more than Pakistan at the moment, with 1,000s of new cases being reported everyday. Players are more prone to be tested positive in Europe than in Pakistan.

Yup - which is why it is understandable that the players want to be with their friends and families in the UK during these uncertain times rather than abandoning them and go playing games thousands of miles away :)

Play behind closed doors - like they have decided to do in Karachi and will probably do in Lahore - what's the issue? What is so embarrassing and pathetic about that... :afaq

Or is your issue that the 22 players on the field should not even be anywhere near one another? In which case 99% of people probably come in contact with at least 22 people in their day to day lives, in their day job, and on their way to and from work. If that is unacceptable you are suggesting that Pakistan should be put on lockdown like Italy and certain parts of China....?

Eng team is already in SL.

No, even to organize a match, it requires hundreds to thousands of people. Security folks included.

Then travel in convoys. Close buses.

Crowd gathering or public events with more than 50-100 people are getting banned everywhere.

It's better you call it off now.

No foreigner will be there. No crowd. Why play a domestic match essentially and put our own people and players at risk?

Even one infected player will be a major embarrassment.

It's a farce.

Yes but it has been postponed not completely cancelled, international tours get a separate window same isnt the case with leagues unless its IPL.

You can convince the broadcaster sponsors etc with postponing of an event, its really difficult to manage when you want to cancel a tournument in its later part and there are not much future dates you can adjust the remaining tournument.

Also playing matches behind close door is as safe as it gets anywhere so unless a player already has it, it should be safe. Again Pak isnt highly affected by this virus as of now.

Nope Eng-SL is cancelled according to my skysports news report. IPL date is deferred until mid April.

Going to have to agree to disagree.

I get that it's more than 22 people to organise the game, but it's people going about doing their day to day job. If the game is being played behind closed doors you are preventing the congregation of crowds and that is the primary concern when it comes to COVID-19

So in my mind either you put the country in lock down and prevent everyone from going about doing their day to day job, or you continue with plans but carry out actions to.mitigate the risk e.g. not allowing crowds in the stadium.

Its very likely that someone at some stage involved with the PSL will be infected with COVID-19. Thats just a fact. But it's also extremely likely that someone from every walk of life is likely to be infected at some stage. So either we put the country in lock down or we try mitigate the risk.

I feel they should rush the final to this Sunday-Monday. Waiting till Wednesday; we don't even know what's happening tomorrow.

Its part of WTC and England and Srl will find a future date as per other sources. It probably wont happen until 2021 mos probably due to busy schedule of England.

Its this kind of scare mongering and over reaction which has put us in the situation we are in anyway and as an fyi nothing has been cancelled just postponed ipl, premiership, nba etc. Health always comes first im not denying that but you cant just cancel everything and ask the whole world to lock themselves in their houses for the next 2 weeks.

Rules have been relaxed to allow PSL franchises to replace the overseas players with locals. There's no minimum foreign players requirement any more.

Yea just seen now. News keeps on changing.

COVID-19 is definitely a concern for players. Regardless, the best option is try and mitigate the spread of the virus. The PSL is being played behind closed doors, with extreme security. Which means players are limited to interactions with fans even outside the stadium. Unless , we propose putting the country on lock down , I think the PSL should continue. The fear mongering and belittling of the management is somewhat annoying and seems unnecessary. Players have the option and are mature enough to make their own decisions in regards to playing or not.

Yeah totally understandable. As long as they don't turn up in the IPL in April if the virus is still around.

Can't blame the players.

Health comes first.

The situation between europe and Pakistan is vastly different the WHO has labelled europe the centre of the epidemic. Britain for example currently has 800 cases if I'm not mistaken, and doesn't have enough funding to carry out the scale of testing the WHO has stated we need.

Pakistan has less than a tenth of cases and is largely restricted to people who have travelled from a particular region. Also, with weather temperatures reaching higher and summer arriving sooner, the virus is less likely to survive.

I think players making the decision to leave is fine, although they are leaving to go back to more infective countries. I also think the PCB is also well within it's right, based on current data, to carry on with the tournament.

They are leaving due to the risk of borders closing and not being allowed back home in case. So get home while you can is the thinking

It's less about the foreign players getting infected in theur iwn countries and more about them getting stuck outside of their home countries because of a border ban. Imagine if one of their loved ones get ill and the foreign players can't enter their own country because of a border ban, to see said loved ones?

I don't have an issue with the tournament continuing as long as it's held behind closed doors completely in Lahore. Because Sindh has confirmed cases, you don't want to risk infection even in a behind closed doors setting.

It's unfortunate but I hope fans & teams understand if some players prefer to be home until they understand what is happening or feel safe & with familiar healthcare.

Several of the biggest sporting events in the world have shut down, so PSL is just another sport to feel the impact.

Those saying it is an over-reaction: I have relatives & friends working in health care in HK & Taiwan, they are saying that some people who have "recovered" were left with lung damage that may be permanent- they struggle to walk stairs, let alone exercise or play top level sport.

Some or many of the symptoms may be flu-like but that is not the ENTIRETY of the symptoms or potential effects. An athlete has more to lose by catching it than you may think.

Sane decision. All sport events needs to stop for the moment around the world, not just cricket.

These games aren't the same without the overseas players.

The final will be played behind close doors as well. So depressing.

Should have cancelled/postponed the rest of the tournament.

Oh for sure, I don't blame the foreign players for leaving, regardless of where they are headed back to. My response was to a particular poster criticising the PCBs handling of the PSL, with Europe being used as an example for sport being suspended.

The discussion related to Watson's alleged comments has been removed for now as we can't verify the statement.

It is incredibly impressive how many players have stayed on for the PSL.

Make no qualms, this is a big issue that is far beyond cricket and sport in general.

However for people to stay back, knowing what’s happening worldwide, is a testament to the organisation of this tournament and how the players have been made to feel while in Pakistan. They would not stay if they were not impeccably looked after.

We have bashed the PCB a lot, but credit where it’s due.

In the long term this could really help with resumption of cricket in Pak. 12 months ago, we were struggling to get players to come to Pakistan even if we paid them extra. Now players like Watson and Dunk are staying back despite a global pandemic that is causing much bigger events to be cancelled and borders to be closed.

Pakistan and foreign lives are the same - PSL should be stopped or title awarded to whoever is leading with agreement of all.

Can you talk some sense, what risk players are facing if they are playing in empty stadiums and we're all watching on TV? Why exactly some people think PSL should be suspended ? Foreign players made the right decision to leave as flight might get suspended and they would be stuck

UK is more risky place for catching corona virus infection than Pakistan ATM.

Some people , probably some of our neighbors asking for PSL to be suspended . Can anyone of them tell me what risk players are facing while plying in a closed stadium and fans are watching on TV.

Majority of the foreign players have left due to possible travel ban and also they wanted to be with their families at this uncertain time, makes lot of sense, but nothing wrong if PSL continues with majority of local players and some foreigners who opted to stay at their own will.

Bless in disguise for some local players, who have been warming the benches.

In UK you are far more prone to be hit by the Coronavirus than Pakistan. Good luck to the English players going back!

It's not about where there are more cases. Countries are rapidly putting up border restrictions. Many people do not want to be stuck in a foreign country for an indefinite period of time.

Mitchell McClenaghan has left Karachi Kings (See Post #1)

My question is, why are they leaving to countries where it is far more prevalent?

Only sane answer could be family.

respect all the players who left and who are still there.
Hope everyone in this world stays safe and healthy.

What???? That’s news to me. Don’t think he’s leaving at all, besides the tournament only has a few days left now.

Aussie gun Chris Lynn heading home early from Pakistan in midst of coronavirus pandemic

Australian Twenty20 star Chris Lynn is heading home early from the Pakistan Super League in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic.

Lynn has spent the past three weeks playing for the Lahore Qalandars in the PSL and in what turned out to be his final innings for the side this season blasted an unbeaten 113 against the Multan Sultans.

“Thoroughly enjoyed my time at the @thepsl unfortunately in these circumstances I’ve chosen to head home, I’ve always said there is more to life than cricket and this is certainly one of these cases (sic),” Lynn posted on Instagram. “I have full faith in the @lahoreqalandars to go all the way but more importantly have fun lads! Thank you to everyone involved, Pakistan you have been a blast (sic)”.

Lynn will need to spend 14 days in self-isolation when he arrives in Australia, with the goverment enforing tighter border security laws for anyone landing in the country after midnight Monday.

Lynn scored 284 runs at 40.57 for the Qalanders this season, while his Australian teammate Ben Dunk has made 266 at 53.20.

At this stage, Dunk is reportedly comfortable staying in Pakistan for the remainder of the tournament.

Dane Vilas takes his place, local player comes in for Weise. Prasanna was benched anyways.

So Dunk, Patel and Vilas vs
Delport, Walton and Jordan

I understand that but isn’t health the number one priority?

Umm what?? So you are saying a player should be stuck for an indefinite period in a foreign land? Imagine the additional costs if you are stuck at a hotel as opposed to being at your own home. Furthermore, you would feel much more comfortable at home and around you loved ones.

PSL should be done and dusted as quickly as possible. Players need to return home as soon as possible.

The more the foreign players leave better it is we get to see local players in action in the remaining high pressure games - such exposure is good for their experience.

I don't think we'll have many foreign players left by the time Final comes.
