Since the Asia Cup is taking place in the ODI Format, this would be a good exercise to make an All Time Asian ODI Eleven

1) Sachin Tendulkar
2) Jayasuriya/Afridi
3) Virat Kohli
4) Kumar Sangakkara
5) Inzimam-ul-Haq
6) MS Dhoni (wk)
7) Imran Khan (captain)
8) Wasim Akram
9) Waqar Younis
10) Chaminda Vaas
11) Muttiah Muralitharan

What is yours?

Mine will be:
1. Sachin Tendulkar
2. Saeed Anwar
3. Mahela Jayawardene
4. Virat Kohli
5. Inzamam-ul-Haq
6. MS Dhoni (WK, Captain)
7. Shahid Afridi
8. Wasim Akram
9. Muttiah
10. Anil Kumble
11. Waqar Younis

Mahela with a 33 average? I feel he was a bit overrated in ODI. there was just no comparison between him and Sanga

How does Inzamam get selected? He couldnt bat in SENA and sucked in icc tournaments.

These 11's are not even pratical, its more about 11 players from asia that were famous.

yes, we can change Mahela with Sangakara based on stats. But having 2 WK in a team who have not fielded in the outfield is a tough decision.

Were famous for a reason. Reason being they were actually good over a long period of time as can be seen from the high batting/low bowling averages

Sanga was a good batsman when he was a wicket-keeper. However, after he left the gloves, he became an ATG ODI batsman

1. Sachin Tendulkar
2. Sanath Jayasuriya
3. Kumar Sangakkara
4. Virat Kohli
5. Babar Azam
6. Yuvraj Singh
7. Mahendra Singh Dhoni
8. Wasim Akram
9. Waqar Younis
10. Muthiah Muralidaran
11. Chaminda Vaas

Maybe a little weak on 5th/6th bowler but to be honest this was a 'top of my head' list without thinking about it much

Sanga was a good batsman when he was a wicket-keeper. However, after he left the gloves, he became an ATG ODI batsman
Surely he is an ATG, and if he fields in the outfield with Dhoni as WK, then Sanga will be my choice in place of Mahela.

I'd have Viru in there, not the best ODI average, but I reckon you need a power hitter in the top 4
I'd also have Shakib in there, 37 with the bat and 29 with the ball. He is too good to ignore

1) Sachin
2) Shewag
3) Kohli
4) Sangakkara
5) Inzi
6) Shakib
7) Dhoni (wk)
8) Imran
9) Wasim
10) Waqar
11) Murali

1. Tendulkar
2. Rohit Sharma
3. Kohli
4. Babar (surprised no one has picked him, he is already good enough)
5. Yuvraj
6. Dhoni (c)
7. Imran
8. Wasim
9. Waqar
10. Akhtar ( I think he’s a bit underrated here, he played enough ODIs)
11. Murali

Could put Shakib for Imran but I don’t know how well he’d play lower down. And you just can’t play him in the top 5 given how good the other batsman are, plus Yuvraj could provide the part time spin option.

1. Tendulkar
2. Jayasuriya
3. Afridi - Designated pinch hitter
4. Kohli
5. Yuvraj
6. Dhoni (Wicket-keeper)
7. The Immortal Kapil Dev (Captain)
8. Wasim
9. Kumble

Everybody agrees Tendulkar and Jayasuriya are a perfect foil for each other, meanwhile Kohli and Babar will be run machines at 3 and 4.
I've gone for Yuvraj over Sanga or Shakib at 5 as he is a better finisher which is more important as the top 4 is so strong.
The all Pakistani pace attack will be brutal then no let up as you have Murali and Kumble to contend to in the middle overs. On a pitch offering less for the spinners, swap Kumble for Shoaib Akhtar.

Jayasuriya

Imran plays as a floater. Comes in at 5 if early wickets fall. Yuvraj and Dhoni get bumped up if the score is 200/3 after 35 overs.

I'd put sangakara ahead of inzi, Imran > Kapil, Imran bowling is > Bumrah's lol. The era that kapil played isn't too relevant anymore otherwise zaheer Abass deserved to be on here.

Also ik 12th man misbah is a troll 😂😂, but in a serious note saeed Anwar would be in my reserves alongside jaysuria and waqar younis

IMO Inzi >> Babar, Inzi was one of the most talented batsmen Pakistan has ever produced after Zaheer Abbas.
Of course, if a yoyo test was a part of the selection criteria, it would be Javed instead of Inzi.

You have two excellent new ball bowlers, two death over merchants, and the GOAT spinner.

Openers are beasts batting first, and the middle order are chase experts.

Only weakness I see is everyone in the batting lineup has a max SR of 120, except maybe Sanath.

I'll go ahead and come up with a ROW XI to see how our lot compares:

Gilchrist
Lara
King Viv
Ponting (c)
de Villiers
Bevan
Flintoff
Pollock (Vettori if it's a turner)
Starc
Warne
McGrath

Asia XI are favourites both at home and abroad. But the ROW XI has three players (Gilchrist, Viv, and de Villiers) that can run away with the game.

Sanath for Rohit and it’s perfect team. Rohit is a modern ODI great but Jayasuria plays a similar role.
Kapil in place of Imran. The latter is overrated as an ODI cricketer.

Sharma (Anwar and Jaya are nowhere near)
Tendulkar
Kohli
Sangakkara
Yuvraj
MSD (wk and captain)
Imran Khan
Kapil Dev
Wasim
Mushtaq
Bumrah

I'd put sangakara ahead of inzi, Imran > Kapil, Imran bowling is > Bumrah's lol. The era that kapil played isn't too relevant anymore otherwise zaheer Abass deserved to be on here.

Also ik 12th man misbah is a troll 😂😂, but in a serious note saeed Anwar would be in my reserves alongside jaysuria and waqar younis

I have to admit I was torn between Sanga and Inzi. The comparison is difficult statistically because one played during the 90s whereas the other played 10 years later, so they played in different eras.

I went for Inzi because I felt he had more impact and was a more versatile. He knew how to bat throughout a run chase but he could also play the finisher role. Inzi's innings in the 1992 World Cup Semi-Final was an innings from the future. It was something you would expect in today's game. It was so good, it would've been an exceptional knock in any era of white ball cricket.

I don't think Imran was better than Kapil Dev in ODIs. Imran was an ATG bowler in tests but for me he was just decent in ODIs. There's not much to separate them from a bowling standpoint. But it's Kapil's batting for me that stands out. He would've been an amazing number 6 white ball batsman in today's era. Imran Khan's batting and his contributions as a whole in ODIs is overrated. I feel he's overhyped in ODIs because of the 1992 World Cup and also because of his ATG status in red ball cricket as a bowler and all-rounder, so people by default assume he was also an ATG in white ball cricketer. But I don't think he was.

Bumrah is way ahead of Imran Khan as a white ball bowler. It's not even worthy of comparison. To average 23 with 144 wickets from 85 matches and to have an economy of approx. 4.5 is just unreal in today's game. There hasn't been much swing for bowlers in this World Cup, but Bumrah has managed to get prodigious swing and seam in almost every game so far. Not just with the new ball but also in the middle overs as well which is quite remarkable.

I really wanted to pick Saeed Anwar ahead of Rohit Sharma but what the hitman has been achieved can't be overlooked. Sanath Jayasuriya would definitely make my reserves as well. He revolutionised how white ball cricket should be played by openers.

Fair enough.

Select the all time best Indian XI and make space for Wasim Akram, Muralitharan and Saqlain Mushtaq and you have your All Time Asian XI.

My all-time Asian ODI XI:

Tendulkar
Jayasuriya
Kohli
Sangakara
Mahela
Imran Khan (c)
Dhoni (wk)
Wasim
Vaas
Saqlain Mushtaq
Shoaib Akthar.
Rohit has surpassed jayasuriya and in no world does mahela deserve a place in this xi. Waqar over vaas too

Rohit
Sehwag
Kohli
Inzy
Yuvraj
Dhoni (C)
Afridi
Razzaq
Wasim
Shami
Murali

The batting depth and power is unbeatable.

SRT, Kohli, Wasim, Dhoni, Murali, Bumrah

These 6 spots are pretty much locked.

Another opener spot is between Jaya and Sharma. One gets picked over another depending on if you need Jaya's bowling.

That leaves spots for two bowlers and two batsmen. I will actually stack the side with IK and Dev as two bowlers because that makes batting really long and explosive due to Dev's X factor. There have not been many better bowlers than them and if if some one can make a case , their batting will tilt it in their favor.

In batting I will take Sangakkara and Yuvraj. Sangakkara case is simple, and Yuvraj if you need a second spinner to bowl some good overs.

SRT
Jaya/Rohit
Kohli
Sangakkara
Yuvraj
Dhoni ( Keeper & Captain )
IK
Dev
Wasim
Bumrah
Murali

You have batting till 8 and probably 9 because Wasim could bat a bit as well. Batting is actually very explosive, solid and have tons of X factor.

You have 4 very good pacers and one gun spinner. If needed you get to have Jaya(if selected) and Yuvraj coming in to bowl as well on spinning tracks.

You cna get slightly different combinations and they cna be equally good, but it's pretty close.

SRT
Rohit
Kohli
Sanga
Yuvi
MSD(c/wkt)
Kapil
Imran
Wasim
Murali
Bumrah

Rohit sharma
Sangakarra
Sachin
Kohli
inzamam
Dhoni
IK
Wasim akram
Saqlain
Shami
Bumrah

Originally I had Anwar as an opener but after seeing rohits breath taking performances, it's just impossible to put him in.

A case can even be made for k.dev over imran in odi. In tests its a no contest. Imran is light years ahead of kdev but in odi the difference isn't much at all if you consider the whole package.

Tendulkar
Rohit Sharma
Kohli
Sangakkara
Zaheer Abbas
Dhoni
Imran Khan
Kapil Dev/Kumble
Wasim Akram
Vaas
Saqlain

Sachin Tendulkar
Saeed Anwar
Virat Kohli
Kumar Sangakkara
Yuvraj Singh
MS Dhoni (wk)
Imran Khan
Kapil Dev
Wasim Akram
Jasprit Bumrah
Muttiah Muralitharan

From 90's onwards(Cant comment on cricketers from earlier generations)

Tendulkar
Sharma
Kohli
Aravinda
Yuvraj
MSD (wk/c)
Razzaq
Wasim
Murali
Shami
Bumrah

You are probably someone who only watches IPL.

Jayasuriya is a level above Rohit.

Vaas was better than Waqar in ODI.
No he isn't lol. Jayasuriya averaged 32 and was massively inconsistent. He made his name bashing Indian trundlers. Chocked in both the semis and finals when Lanka won it in 96. Even counting for the difference in eras, rohit easily clears him. Rohit is the greatest odi opener after sachin

I agree with Jayasuriya being underrated but if rohit wins the WC for India then it's hard not to put him up there tbf.

Vaas vs waqar. There is a case for vaas over waqar in odi.

Jayasuriya can bowl too. He has 323 ODI wickets.

Jayasuriya has also won 1996 WC.

That is true. Guess it's a matter of preference. Both are destructive. Can't go wrong with either.

Anwar too but he is slightly inferior

Since the Asia Cup is taking place in the ODI Format, this would be a good exercise to make an All Time Asian ODI Eleven

1) Sachin Tendulkar
2) Jayasuriya/Afridi
3) Virat Kohli
4) Kumar Sangakkara
5) Inzimam-ul-Haq
6) MS Dhoni (wk)
7) Imran Khan (captain)
8) Wasim Akram
9) Waqar Younis
10) Chaminda Vaas
11) Muttiah Muralitharan

What is yours?

Just imagine this, Inzi and Kohli running in tandem 😂😂😂
