ISLAMABAD: Iran’s Foreign Minister Javad Zarif is due to arrive in Islamabad on Thursday (today) as part of Tehran’s efforts to garner Pakistan’s support against the backdrop of rising tensions in the Persian Gulf region.

Foreign Office officials confirmed that Zarif would be in Islamabad for daylong trip to hold meetings with civil and military authorities.

The primary purpose of his visit is to brief the Pakistani leadership about Iran’s ongoing tensions with the United States, they said.

The top Iranian diplomat has already travelled to other regional countries, including China, Japan, India and Turkmenistan. Iran’s state-run news agency, IRNA, said Zarif held meetings with top officials of the four Asian countries on the US moves to create tension in the region.

He also briefed them about Iranian commitment to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) endorsed by the UN Security Council Resolution 2231.

Iran decided to review some of the commitments to the July 2015 nuclear deal after the United Stated withdrew unilaterally a year ago and led Iran to take reciprocal measure based on Articles 26 and 36 of the JCPOA.

Zarif’s visit comes against the backdrop of heightened fears of a clash between the US and Iran. The US has recently sent an aircraft carrier and a bomber taskforce to the Middle East in response to what officials called “a credible threat” by Iranian regime forces.

Saudi Arabia said that several of its oil tankers had been damaged in mysterious “sabotage attacks” after US warnings that Iran could target shipping in the region.

Observers believe that any serious conflict between Iran and the US would test the diplomatic skills of Pakistan, which has close ties with Iran’s arch rival Saudi Arabia but at the same time does not want to antagonise the neighbouring country.

Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi has said recently that Pakistan would not join any camp in case of a conflict, warning that any escalation in tensions would be detrimental for the entire region.

Pakistan has also urged both the US and Iran to show maximum restraint and insists that dialogue was the only way forward to resolve contentious issues.

The Foreign Office officials said Islamabad would reiterate its stance during the visit of the Iranian Foreign Minister. It is expected that the two sides would also review the bilateral ties during the visit of Zarif to Islamabad.

One of the issues that would come up for discussions is the Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline project. Pakistan has recently informed Iran that it could not proceed with the project as long as US sanctions remain on Tehran.

Pakistan is in a very tricky situation and staying neutral will be seen as supporting Iran by Saudis/Washington.

We should always talk to everyone. Would be be nice to get lease on that chabahar port, though.

Iran should ask thre best friend, India to save ther @ss from US, i hope US will listen to India.

Why will Iran need the help of India? I thought India is a fake and a wannabe supa powa!!!

Pakistan should help their Islamic friend. India is an outsider.

I think India should help Iran out. A strong Iran is necessary for the geopolitical stability in the region and India’s interest

India's relations with Washington are really good atm so i don't think Modi would like to change it.

No Iran was breeding indian agents, selling cheap oil, chahbhar project is also for india so they should seek help from india & for india, india shouldnt show its @ss to iran in these circumstances & should act like a grateful country.

India is outsider ? LOL, what happend to chahbhar port thn ?
India is supa pawa for Iran.
Islamic friend dont wage proxy wars with the help of pakistan's enemy.

I thought Islamic countries should stand together?

After the revolution we always found Iran missing whenever we needed them most they were missing from the list most of the time while Saudi/China/Turkey were there. We do share borders and same religion but our relations are very limited (even though Pakistan is the second largest shia country after Iran).

Not sure what we can do for them honestly. The current government is pretty keen to enhance trade relations with Iran, we were even setting up a barter committee after Imran Khan's visit but the US is trigger happy with the sanctions at the moment and Pakistan does not want to come in the line of fire.

We've just negotiated an IMF structural adjustment package. That is as good as the US neutralizing us in this conflict. Even if have sympathies for the people of Iran amid crushing sanctions, there'll be nothing we can do for them. Plus, we have found a new-found love in MBS who will never end his antagonism towards the Iranian regime.

Pakistan should do what it can to ensure no military conflict arises. It should firstly tell the US it wont be part of any conflict, no help with bases or intelligence as it wants to stay neutral. It should then advise Iran, it will not take Saudi side unless the holy cities are under threat.

Iran should just get on with producing nuclear weapons. The US , Israel will then **** forever.

If there ever was a war Pakistan should be smart and clean out baluchistan from Irani proxies and maybe some surgical strikes in Iran to clean out the proxy filth wont be too bad either. I hope there never is a war for the sake of innocent people.

Iran & Saudia, both represents two different, 180° tricks of USA and USA will never attack Iran. Between Iran & Saudia, Pakistan should never trust Iran. Habitual Opportunistics. Can not be trusted.

Although USA won't attack Iran, still fencing the Iran-Pak border should start immediately.

close the pak/iran border.
if war happens, expect a tsunami of iranian refugees into balochistan. And no, Pakistan is Not the patron saint of iranians or indian muslims. there is no place for more refugees here.

Tell the iranians to to go to india for help. India being the super power it is, will no doubt intercede and save its friend Iran.

Pakistan should stay neutral, and we need to fully get out of the USA block as quickly as possible.

Pakistan itself needs help. Maybe they should seek help from their friends in Russia and Syria. Good luck to Iranian people, hope they can find better leaders.

We definately can not afford to alter the population demographics of Blauchistan as things have improved in the last decade or so. The ethnic baluch will also not like others coming into their land. We also don't want a PTM like situation in Balochistan; where Iranians join and fund a movement against Pakistan.

Close borders. Pakistan has its own issues and our economy is recovering atm. We can afford to be indulging in others wars.

No need for us to support Iran when they have always supported India by assisting terrorists like Kulbushan. They have also been creating trouble in our Baluchistan as well. America will attack Iran if it wants no matter what Pak thinks. They should ask India to support them, not us.
