After Pakistan were once again "Herathed", Posters on PP got down to the usual banter, Point scoring and in some cases wrist slitting.I will admit that yours truly was also involved in some. But in all this we may have all forgotten what a remarkable test match this was.

Coming to "Fortress UAE" a Lankan team, thats had just lost 9-0 to India at home was expected to just roll over.It had been labelled as mediocre and the entire selection committee had resigned.Few days before the test they lost Angelo Matthews.

The test match started and soon Lanka were 60 odd for 3 and people just expected them to collapse. They didnot.First Karunaratne and Chandimal and then Chandimal and Dickwella steadied the ship and took Sri Lanka to 419.Dinesh Chandimal, a man who was widely believed to be the heir to the throne of Jayawardena and Sangakkara, showed glimpses of his ability which is undeniable, but so is his inconsistency. His 155 was instrumental in getting Sri Lanka to 419.

In reply, Pakistan began solidly ending the day with 64 for no loss. The next day they reached 100 for no loss and then went onto play excruciatingly slow to end the day at 221 for 4, with Azhar Ali still holding fort. Pakistan lost a flurry of wickets and was staring at a first innings deficit before the debutant Haris Sohail guided the tail and took Pakistan to a slender first innings lead.A few lusty blows from Hassan Ali helped the cause.A certain HMRKB Herath had silently taken a fifer.

By the time Sri Lanka finshed the 4th day it was evident that the pitch was turning, not alarmingly, but still turning. Sri Lanka were cleaned up by Yasir Shah on day 5. The recently declared "fit" leg spinner ran through the Sri Lankan side picking a fifer, only Dickwella showed any resistance to his magic.

Pakistan were expected to chase down the paltry total, with the pitch still not doing anything alarming. Sami Aslam went first, falling to Herath. Azhar Ali inexplicably fell to the "Fast Bowling" of Lakmal on a 5th day pitch in UAE.Shan Masood fidegeted for a while before falling to one of the Perera's from a long list of Perera's from Sri Lanka.Babar Azam also fell to Perera, convincing many that he may not be a "Test Batsman" yet. Asad Shafiq once again showed why the logic of picking him actually defies logic. Sarfaraz Khan and Haris Sohail steadied the ship and slowly took Pakistan towards the target. Then, to put it in the words of a certain Australian cricketer Sarfaraz had a brain freeze,he went down the pitch and got himself stumped. Pakistan were staring down the barrel. Once Haris Sohail lost his wicket to Perera,it was all lost.

Pakistan lost the test by 21 runs.Their first in Abu Dhabi. A "mediocre" side had suddenly sent a message of competence. A star batsman has shown why he was considered a "Rising Star" and why he isnt a lost cause yet. A debutant making his return to cricket after a long injury lay off at almost 29 justified his selection. Two spinners, whose abdominal girth may have made a lot of news recently, showed that while fitness is important, its not everything. Above All dont forget that he may be 39, but you can still be HERATHED.

Lets enjoy this buffet of cricket performances that this test match has served us.

Trying to keep test matches to 4 days will not allow tests like this. 1 day extra makes a huge difference in pitch and you see such tests. ECB proposal is a bad one.

Its a atrocious proposal. If this was a 4 day test, it would have been a dull draw.

May be scorecard wise but actually it was very boring test match apart from last day. I know Pak or SL fans may criticize me but when ever I tried to watch the match, it nearly put me to sleep.
It was a rare occasion for me to get a four day off, I was literally waiting for this test match as usually I don't get to see test match in Asia because of work timing. Both team batted with negative attitude on first 3 and half day nearly flat track, even on last day Pak lost it with bad batting.

I am assuming the idea behind 4-day Tests is to shorten the longest format, and to keep shortening it until it no longer exists. It is basically an admission that Test matches are dead. So enjoy the unique finishes like today's while you still can.

Did you record the match? Just in case if you are having trouble sleeping some time.

Absolutely agree with you, most matches in subcontinent will end up as a draw.

I think more than being great, it was a contest between two teams who were trying to outdo each other in how to lose a match Lanka did it's best to lose ,but were outdone by the ineptness of Pakistan as far as batting is concerned, this is not how you approach on slow pitches, Play the ball on it merit not bowler

Let’s not sugarcoat this. It was a boring test with 2 sides trying their best to drag out a test match.

It was atrocious, slow, defensive, and boring.

There are no two ways about it.

Anyone who thinks that it was an intriguing or interesting test match, really needs to review their cricketing taste.

You can blame the ECB's greed for that, I doubt India, Aus or even NZ/Pak/SA/SL are considering this. You can say buh bye to test cricket if it;s anything less than 5 days, more is welcome of course, because most Indians fans will reject this insanity :133:

The words purists use is absorbing or attritional :))

Thats why we should savour it while it lasts.

absolutely.only the ineptness of srilanka has thrown this match open .

alas pak squandered it with even worse ineptness

Win, lose or draw Pakistan are rarely in a dull game :)) No one outside Pak fans will ever feel the ecstasy of being a Pakistan fan. It was a great game and we also got to take our hat off to Lanka for their courageous fightback after the awful series they had against India, they are now in a position to end the undefeated test series streak in the UAE :floyd

It was a good script to romanticize but the quality of cricket (batting, bowling, fielding, team selection, tactics) left a lot to be desired. Cannot be called a great test if the teams are competing for being the worse.

Quality of cricket was poor from both sides, but you can still get a good test match.

This is the reason we need to introduce two tier system in Test arena. Srilanka and Pakistan are almost equal in terms of strength and hence the matches are exciting. On the other hand, we have got SA toying with Bangla and fans wonder why Test Cricket is dying.

But if the footage of most part of a test match can be as useful as an anti-insomnia drug, then it hardly falls under that category.

Well, I only say the last day. I don't see matches in UAE most of the times. Bad place to play cricket. These two teams can produce much better cricket in pitches with some pace and bounce. Yah, not everything will change and quality of cricket may not be that high, but it will improve.

To hell with it being a good test. Pakistan lost.

huh!!!!?? great test match? seriously? even umpires looked bored and wanted to just end the test. last 40 overs of test where ball was dancing looked ok rest of the 4 days? both teams played on snail's pace. 30s 40s SR

I don't see Pak loosing this series, this will be either drawn series or win by Pak.

Good test? definitely not. Boring 4 days, and only the ineptitude of the two batting sides lead to a result on what was a horrible cricket pitch.

OP trying way too hard for a POTW. This was a horrible Test match where nothing happened for 3 and a quarter days. Tests in UAE are excruciatingly boring for the first 4 days on most occasions. Day 5 was great and that's it. Overall it was definitely nowhere near an entertaining exhibition of Test match cricket.

Oh unlike you i already have a POTW.

It wasn't a classic test. For 4 days we got the usual UAE rubbish. Then due to poor batting we got a close and exciting games.

Great thread. The authorities also dont realise the impact 4 day tests will have on fast bowlers bodies. Its the best way to kill tests.

Not too disappointed with the loss- we have lost some key players and are in a rebuilding stage.

Fantastic game.

Fantastic Test.

Not nice to come out on the wrong end of one but that was an exceptional 5th day.

Though the result may have surprised many, from the very first day I felt that having Pakistan bat last on a 5th day wicket gave SL a chance. The Pakistani team is very volatile. It will sometimes perform far beyond expectations but is also prone to 5th day batting collapses.

Last innings was exciting for a while, till Sarfaraz batted. Not otherwise

I don't think I've ever predicted a test as well as I did for this one.

Save for Harris Sohail's innings everything was on (Ian) Point.
