We should assume that in such arbitrary team all players play at their prime best/best form! Otherwise things can get screwed up just like how it happens with current/ongoing teams! (For e.g., Dhoni today is not even 30% of what he was at his best!)

Sachin
Sehwag
Ganguly
Kohli
Yuvaraj
Dhoni
Kapil
R.Jadeja
Srinath
Zaheer
Kumble

Sachin & Sehwag should be the best opening pair, even though you will be tempted at including Ganguly, but Sehwag's best utility is as an opener! Even though he may get out at times, but on his day he can take the game away from the opposition completely. This is more true in test matches, he actually under-performed in ODIs. If Sehwag fails there is Sachin to provide the solidity and also Ganguly. Actually I want more fitter Ganguly who can bowl some overs. Yuvaraj scores over Dravid as a matchwinner in ODIs. Dravid would have found place in ODI only if Dhoni was non-existent (I mean as an WK/Batsman, because barring Dhoni there is no one actually who was even marginally good with bat! We would have taken Dravid's bits & piece WK skills as better prospect) Kumble will definitely play for India in both formats (except T20) I think people have not seen his best at his early days... He is at least better than Harbhajan & Ashwin whose prime didn't last long! That's why I tell that such arbitrary teams is all about picking the players looking at their overall impact and not necessarily on their form at certain period and whether they outplayed someone at some point (at one point when both played together definitely Harbhajan outplayed Kumble, and Ashwin outplayed Harbhajan, but actually Kumble was miles ahead at his prime when neither Harbhajan nor Ashwin played along with him!) I will also have R.Jadeja as 2nd spinner, will utilize his whatever batting skills (in fact he has decent record in ODI with bat) and definitely he is all-time best fielder for India! We also have Yuvaraj & Sehwag's part-time spin... Raina will be reserve/12th man... Also Gambhir, Prasad & others will join the reserves...

Having said that the 1983 Indian WC team can upset this all time team. Same goes with 1985 world series team which was even better... Sometimes the team combination works well instead of putting all the big names together... That is also one of the reason how Pakistan beat India in CT finals...

Big call with Pandya but really he can become an Indian great, if not ATG, in ODI if he plays as well as he did against Aus or CT final, Pathan is very underrated, was MoM in his last LO game!

5th bowling has to be done by Jadeja + Yuvi+Sachin.

Think Pandya will sooner surpass jadeja and make it to Indian alltime XI.If he comes in at 8 in this lineup, our side would look very strong.

Great opening pair followed by one of greatest no. 3 batsmen and a very good odi player in ganguly who was destructive against spin.
Yuvraj in his prime was brilliant match winner with bat. Dhoni the best ever finisher and kapil dev among best allrounders.
Kumble capable of bowling attacking and defensive lines according to situation. No mug with bat either.
Agarkar could bowl well at his prime and be used as an attacking option.
Zaheer was excellent odi bowler and srinath was pretty good too.
A great side with atg level batting and pretty good bowling to go with it. The 4 pacers could be expected to bowl around 30 to 35 overs with kumble and almost everyone else except in the team capable enough to bowl 3 to 4 good overs.

Mine would be pretty much this, except I will probably ask dada to open, with Sehwag at 4. Or when chasing, Sehwag at 4 and Kohli at 3. And when batting first, the other way round.

Batting is crazy but the bowling is MUCH weaker than other ATG sides. The pacers are decent without being outstanding and Kumble was more of a containing ODI bowler. The 5th bowler is a mix of Yuvi, Sachin, Sehwag and Ganguly.

India really lack a world class pacer. Of the 8 long established sides (we are new-ish), they have by far the worst pacers.

i wouldnt take Kumble in my ODI team.He was at max a containing bowler and would get blasted in today's era.Was a pathetic fielder and batsman.Bhajji is much better option than him in ODIs

We dont even have an ATG odi spinner let alone an ATG pacer.

Imagine how would an ATG lineup fare vs Zaheer, Srinath, Kapil, Bhajji and Kumble?

All decent and deadly on their day but other AT X1 lines up could flay that attack to all parts.

we have a riches of openers and spinners to choose from. not so much for pace bowlers due to our many years of neglect.

Gambir over ganguly anyday

Ganguly is a legendary figure in terms of sheer impact towards Indian cricket. He pretty much was the most influential figure in terms of changing the mentality of Indian cricket and enforcing the winning culture in Indian team.

Hence, Ganguly over Gambhir/Dhawan anyday and twice on Saturday and guess what, yes you got it right, thrice on Sunday.

That's 10 times in a week.

Gambir helped india win the title though. For me gambir is greater than ganguly who was pretty bad vs pace and bounce. Can't really rate such players.

Lol as if Gambhir was anything special. He has zero tons vs Australia or South Africa:)))

Ganguly is several notches ahead as a cricketer and is just a shade below Tenda, Kohli and Rohit.

Srinath has no impact in ODIs.
lol yeah, Srinadh just about makes it ahead of Agarkar. I really don’t have anyone who can fill in the gap as of now.

Madan Lal, Balwinder Sandhu, (our heroes from WC 83, or Zaheer / Prabhakar were also considered.

Yea I dont just judge a players based on 100s. Did ganguly help india win key games in world cup events? Gambir did. He was a match winner. Ggnguly with such major flaws against pace and bounce shouldn't be in atg lineup.

I take it that ATG XI doesn’t necessarily mean a combination which will become a winning team in future were they all playing contemporarily.

I would say it is a combination of 11 players who absolutely dominated their respective team positions albeit at different times

For example, I cannot vote for clutch players such as mohindar Amarnath or Madan Lal even though they were instrumental in WC’83.

ATG XI member has to be the absolute best player in that position over many years and across ages. For example Dhoni as wk or Kohli as one down or Sachin as opener. Azharuddin, Gavaskar, Vengsarkar or Dravid though ATG in their own right do not make the ATG XI ODI list.

We have a problem of plenty when it comes to spinners or batsmen.

Yes. It was done to accommodate both Sehwag and Rohit.

Also, Tendulkar was a middle order batter in Test anyway.

tests. Maybe. but in tests we will have VVS, Sehwag and Rahul Dravid also in the race .

ODI ATG XI will not be complete without Sachin at the top.

Ganguly 's record is terrific at 3. Averages 50. At 4, his record is poor.

Kohli's record is terrific at 3 & 4 both. I think Ganguly can bat at 3 and Kohli at 4.

You can pick second spinner there. Kumble or Jadeja or Kuldeep are options. Jadeja and Kuldeep can be an ideal two spin combo. Jadeja adds depth to batting and there are plenty 6th bowler bowling option as an additional option to Jadeja for overseas conditions.

Guys, try and explain your thought's behind some of the selections, it makes for a more interesting discussion that way.

I feel like Zaheer Khan was overrated because he was the best seamer out of a pathetic bunch at the time.

When watching Zaheer play I never felt he would run through any line up. He was just a bog standard bowler capable of good spells at times.

I don’t think Zaheer holds a candle to the frontline pacers India has today who can be genuinely scary.

Basically todays bowlers with yesterdays batters and Kapil in there for good measure.

This team is right up there and would probably only fall short against the all time Aussie and WI teams.

There is absolutely no reason for selecting Sehwag over Rohit in ODIs. It is not even a worthy comparison.

Rohit seems mostly effective on flat pitches.

Sehwag is better. He has an X factor. He can bowl too.

Sehwag is an underachiever in ODI. Not good enough. Almost all the one day stars do well only on flat pitches not that Rohit doesn't do well in other places. As the recent stats show he was the best in England in swinging condtiions and also he was a country mile ahead of other Indians on raging turners in India.

We don't need to pick Zak or Srinath anymore in an ODI XI. Just pick the three best pacers - Bumrah, Shami and Kapil and two best spinners. Second spinner can be Jadeja also to add batting depth. Plenty of 6th bowling option available in form of Yuvi or Sachin or Saurav.

I think Zaheer brings that leftie option and adds variety.

Rohit's knock vs England was on a tough batting wicket. It's probably one of the top 3 knocks of this tournament.

Good Question. Ganguly doesn't warrant a place over Sehwag.

At 3 or 4, Ganguly can warrant a place. Sehwag is competing for opener spot. Ganguly changed the mindset of Indian cricket. Always helps when you have more inspirational leaders in your team.

Ganguly over Sehwag?
Sehwag never fulfilled his potential. very inconsistent. very erratic. When he comes off he was like a dream. He was a great test player. India has produced some fantastic openers. Srikkanth, Sidhu, Tendulkar, Ganguly, Gambhir, Sehwag, Rohit, Dhawan. Only Rohit is better than ganguly there.

Dhoni was a leader when a lot of greats played in his team. I think it would be difficult to handle Ganguly. Sehwag gives the team the X factor and a decent spin option.

He had a test hundred vs England on a raging turner in Chennai too. He's incredible against the turning ball and has improved against the moving ball. India will miss him after this world cup

Well, Dhoni was the captain in a team full of greats. He was tactically astute.

Ganguly was pivotal in revolutionizing Indian cricket again as he made his team battle ready by bringing in the correct talent pool for the future after the dark phase India had in the 90s with all the losses overseas and the struggles faced during the match fixing saga.

Dhoni will captain this white ball team but having multiple leaders in the unit helps. Sehwag adds that extra dimension of hitting in powerplays but Rohit showed that he can provide that too so ideally Sehwag isn't required anymore. Also, he mostly opened the batting. Ganguly can bat at 3.

Nah. Sehwag is one of the greatest FTB’s ever, but Rohit is better though even on non flat tracks.

Sehwag is superior in tests though by a good distance. Could make a case for him being the best test opener in Asia.

P.S. Nothing wrong with being an FTB. I don’t like how being an FTB in LOIs has a negative connotation to it.
