Angelo Mathews can overtake Sachin Tendulkar, feels Sri Lanka’s outgoing cricket manager

Sri Lanka cricket teams outgoing manager has made the bold statement that the current captain of the national team — Angelo Mathews — can surpass Sachin Tendulkar in number of Test centuries in his career, going by the fine form Mathews has struck over the recent couple of years.

“From the time he (Angelo Mathews) captained in the Bangladesh series through to the end of the 2015 World Cup, it was marvellous to see a young man really filling the shoes he was intended to fill,” Michael de Zoysa was quoted as saying by Sportskeeda. “With Mahela (Jayawardene) not there and once Sangakkara goes, he will have to do it on his own, then we will really see what he is really made of.”

OK, before some angry posters flock this thread calling it blasphemy, please tell me rationally, why it's impossible to equal or overtake the number of Test centuries SRT has scored?

It is very much possible. But there are at least 10 others who have better chances of doing it than Matthews.

err he is 47 tons behind and he is just about to turn 28, technically it is possible but that doesn't make it any less laughable.

Cook is only 30 and is 21 tons closer and few if any think he will reach tendy.

Just because Tendulkar was cricket for 23 years from 1989 to 2012.

First you better find someone who can play cricket at such a high level for 23 years.

Then we can worry about centuries. :)

Angelo Mathews is almost 28 years old and has grand total of 4 test centuries.

Sachin had 29 test hundreds by the age of 28.

Do you seriously think AM can score 47 centuries in about 10-12 years ?

You also think it over logically.
 
Sounds tough but he is probably the only young cricketer who could do it. Remember he's Sri Lankan as well so 30 tons are coming at home alone. He just needs to hit 22 abroad.
 
love him or hate him :srt seems to be the benchmark for everyone.
 
kohli smith williamson and root are all much younger than mathews and already all have more tons, you could just say if they all continue their current form they will all finish well ahead of angelo.
 
Maybe he was speaking of Sanga .... but mistakenly took Matthew's name.
 
After reading the article, all I can say that the reporter is the one who was probably drunk. Reading the direct quotes of manager, this centuries thing can only be assosiated with Sangakarra !!

Whatever the reporter has written, seems to be his own foolish interpretation...

Thank you for calling it possible. Yes, agreed on your second point. There are other batsmen who probably have a higher chance.

Did I mention Mathews in my post? :-/ It was a general question! It could be anyone.

I was just afraid that some would come up calling it a blasphemy to even think that someone can surpass the number of centuries ;-)
 
In today's era, its very much possible to overtake SRT's century record.

Mathews won't (not talking about technically).

Cook even now if he comes back to form can beat SRT's 100 record.

Its got to do with the number of games.

In the past 70s, 80s and 90s era, you would play 15-20 years and have maybe 100 or so tests to your name.

In this era, if you are from Aus or England, you can play a lot of tests.

Cook has already played 100+ tests and he started in 2006.
 
Matthews is a terrific Test batsman. U never know he may turn out to be a beast in the years to come.

Sanga has played only 53 of his 130 tests away, Sachin played 106 of 200. Why this disparity?

Consequently Sanga has only 1 century in Australia, 2 in England and 1 in SA (tough batting conditions of his era).

Sachin had 6, 4 and 5.

No wonder Sanga isn't rated that very highly (in the top league of SRT, Ponting, Kallis), except by Junaid. Maybe he loves Sanga's 4 centuries in tough conditions, of which only 1 was "match winning". :sanga
 
Also, Kohli already has 2 more centuries in the aforementioned places than Sanga. Not sure what to conclude from it. :))
 
tendulkar's 'record' is a record of longevity. it's a nice one to have but i'll take a few of england-series-winning-160s from mathews over pointless, soulless run accumulation.
 
Kallis had the best chance but he couldn't do it.

I don't think Mathews can overtake Sachin in terms of most centuries as he bats way too down the order. If anyone can come anywhere near Sachin I guess it will be Kohli.

was talking about the comparison between sanga and tendulkar. kohli just had a fabulous tour of australia, a proper comparison can be done at the end of his career. i expect him to come out on top even then though.

Playing less is not the reason. Kohli has 15 Tests and Sanga has 24 tests in those 3 countries.

Having said this, number of centuries in places like SA, Aus and Eng can't be the sole criterion for judging batsmen. There are many factors in getting centuries in those venues.

In my opinion - Making tons in SA, Aus, Eng and India in the last 15 years as visiting batsman counts high because those 4 were the top 4 teams in the last 15 years when playing at home.

Issue here - Sanga wasn't really at Kohli's or any great batsman's level in initial years and he did play many tests even then. Anyway, Sanga is currently better batsman than Kohli. Kohli has a long career and he may eventually go down as a better batsman between these two but that's not true right now.
 
On OP - I feel something wrong with reporting here. Mathews is as much likely to take over SRT's aggregate tons as Herath is likely to take over the number of 5-fers by Murali. It's near impossible given their age.

If there is one batsman who can do it , it is AB de Villiers. The guy is a freak and i won't be surprised if he breaks every batting record by the end of his career.

I doubt any one will ever beat Sachin Tendulkars record. IMO! Maybe ODi record Kohli has chance. But both records? Dont think so

True.

Kohli may re-write ODI records but i believe no-one will ever break his all round centuires tally UNLESS the player is a boy genius and starts scoring tons as a teen and goes on to have a two decade career.
 
I really like him and think he's a class act, but there's no way he'll even score 30 centuries, let alone exceed 50. For one thing Sri Lanka don't play enough test cricket. He might have another 7-8 years of peak form ahead of him but in that time I doubt he'll play more than 50-60 tests, meaning that even if he gets to 30 hundreds he would have ATG figures, which I think is just about the highest he could possibly perform. If he got 50 hundreds then he would have Bradmanesque figires.

Why show so much insecurity about SRT?
 
In all seriousness, ODI Cricket has become way too easy with fielding restrictions.. SRT's record is meant to be broken in this format.

Nothing hard. You're a Pakistani, obviously you'll pick Lara, Ponting or anyone else rather than Sachin.

Till there's someone who can more or less at the top of his game for 20 years at least, it won't be possible to break SRT's record and there lies his greatness which most people here fail to recognize.

No insecurity here, I myself consider Bradman, Hobbs, Sobers and Viv marginally better than him. It's about replying to the insecurity of some Pak fans.

You don't need to respond to every single SRT post if you aren't insecure. You are only turning away neutral fans by mentioning SRT in every single post. You aren't doing any good to player's reputation by obsessively defending him..

Some one from Eng can do it without playing for 20 years. They play plenty of tests.
 
Top class player, but he'd do well to end up with ~20 hundreds, let alone overtake Tendulkar.

Yup. If anyone ever does it my odds are it'll be an Englishman. Hell, people felt if Alistair Cook can keep up his form he would overtake Tendulkar on runs scored, simply because he debuted young and played a ton of matches.

Bcoz the ATGs Ponting Lara Kallis Sanga Inzi MoYo and many others were never able to catch up with Tendulkar .....what chance does this Angelo Matthews have man......what stupidity is that.....

Played a couple of good knocks in their recent ODI series against South Africa I think, still a very good batsman. Will be dangerous if he's fit for the World Cup
