Anil Kumble steps down as Indian cricket team head coach

Personally I feel he was doing an alright job the home season went as expected and we reached the finals of CT.. I just hope he is replaced by a suitable coach who can take our cricket to the next level and not someone like Shashtri who will only stagnate the growth of our team..

What do you guys think?

Quite a strange decision. Has to be the Player power problem

If he and Kohli are not in good terms, then its better for Kumble to step down. Indian Cricket has always been star centered.
Ganguly cannot complain as he and Greg Chappel were always at odds and finally Greg was ousted.

Some one like Moody can be a good fit.

Kohli's ego is getting out of control. Now they'll get a yes-man coach and Kohli will run the show both on and off the field. Not good for Indian cricket.

Numerous reports over the last few days of Kumble and Kohli not on the same page.

That's what the news channels are showing "massive crisis hit team India" "bowled by defeat or dissension" sort of head lines..

The problem was there even before CT began.

Yes but don't you think if we had won the CT against Pakistan Kumble would have enough support to continue as coach if he had wanted? Or even if he quit after winning due to rift with Kohli then if for next couple of years Indian team did not perform well people would have made Kumble into a Gary Kirsten type figure..

Modern player wants the coach to be more of a facilitator.....

Think Kumble did well, and can't argue with results.

It seems like a tragedy that this job will now go to the likes of Shastri or Sehwag (who could not even be bothered to attach a CV to his application, and whose cover letter comprised of 2 lines saying he has played/worked with most of 'the boys' before)

Anil Kumble steps down as India head coach ahead of West Indies tour

Best of luck Jumbo for your future endeavors :14:

Anil Kumble has stepped down as the coach of the Indian cricket team, after his contract expired on Tuesday.

The development completes a drastic turn of events following a 'rift' between Kumble and India captain Virat Kohli, which had started to crop up before the Champions Trophy. According to earlier reports, there were quite a few Indian players who were not too comfortable with Kumble's manner of functioning. It was understood earlier that Kumble would have got an extension at least till the West Indies tour got over on 9 July. This though may have been expected after Kumble did not accompany the Indian team to the West Indies for a limited overs series starting on 23 June, citing his commitment to an ICC meeting in London.

According to The Telegraph, Kohli is reported to have met the Cricket Advisory Committee(CAC) members — Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman on the eve of the Champions Trophy final on Sunday, and expressed "strong reservations" regarding the possibility of Kumble continuing as the coach of the Indian team. The report notes that the meeting was also attended by BCCI acting secretary Amitabh Choudhary, CEO Rahul Johri and general manager MV Sridhar. Reacting to Kumble stepping down, former cricketer Atul Wassan felt one can't have differences and yet continue in his position.

The news comes after Kumble recently re-applied for the position of the India coach. The other candidates in the fray include former Indian opener Virender Sehwag and Australia's Tom Moody, who are tipped to be the frontrunners for the job. Richard Pybus, Dodda Ganesh and Lalchand Rajput.

Jumbo did a good job..should invest his time in working with the youth.

I hope we go for tom moody he seems John wright, Gary Kirsten type of a coach and can work with Kohli behind the scenes..

I feel sorry for Anil Kumble as he is one of the gentleman of cricket, and this is coming from a pakistani fan. Whatever differences there were behind the scenes should have been ironed out but looks like people's ego got in the way. A legend like him who has served the game so well should not feel forced to step down as seems now apparent.

And for those who are saying Tom Moddy is a good fit for the job, I have no doubt he would be a good coach, but he is australian and no way would he be a yes man to fulfill someones ego, do people really think he would give into someones else's power trip?

"Virat's ego...... Jumbo was a good coach .. ...... star-centered"

Where are all these inferences coming from? From what I can read, bunch of players were unhappy with Kumble's coaching methods, Virat as captain took up the issue with the coach and the rest follows....

Why does there have to be a scapegoat for everything?

Kohli's ego is getting out of control. Now they'll get a yes-man coach and Kohli will run the show both on and off the field. Not good for Indian cricket.

Only until India is doing well and not under the kosh, as soon as the going gets tough Kohli cowers in the corner while Dhoni takes over the captaincy as seen in the final.

big blow for india.. kumble was the ideal coach... very level headed and hard working individual.. only replacement that comes close would be dravid/ganguly but kumble would still be better than them

Disappointing stuff tbh. What transpired all of a sudden I wonder, because last I heard - Kumble reapplied for the position.

Disappointing the way Indian cricket is going, Kumble put himself on the line for players salary, probably BCCI didn't like it and somehow KOHLI has issues inspite of not performing well during Aus tour and bottling in the biggest match as a captain last Sunday.

Best of luck to Kumble for future, hopefully he will be appreciated elsewhere.

Inevitable really, especially with those reports of Kohli and Kumble not seeing eye-to-eye.

What could he possibly have against a cool guy like Kumble ? Maybe Kohli is starting to become full of himself , i donno. It wasn't a pretty sight to watch him laugh and joke around after getting thrashed by 200 runs in the final.

Respect for Kumble. He was a fighter whenever he played for India. May be now he understands how it feels when you are the coach of an indian team.

When you get thrashed by 200 runs, laughing and joking is all you can do.

I doubt that guys like Dravid, Laxman or Ganguly will ever take up indian coach's role after looking at Kumble's case.

Most of these players are becoming arrogant day by day due to getting easy money in IPL. Look at loud mouth Rohit Sharma. How arrogant is he and how he performs when he is required the most.

Wouldn't be surprised if India hire a yes-man next, Captain Kohli will moretime also become Coach Kohli behind the scenes...Not a good idea, Kohli is not the man I'd want as a captain when the going gets tough.

People are forgetting that Kohli is representing his team. I believe reports are saying that many players had reservations with his authoritarian style. So all Kohli is doing, is bringing the concerns to the board. Not his fault that Kumble is having problem connecting with the team. Main qualities of a good Manager/Leader is to inspire and create harmony in your team, which he failed in.

Kohli should be sacked as captain. He is not captaincy material

The previous gen like Ganguly even though far more obnoxious had to take the team up from the depths of the fixing controversy. Back then every loss would trigger murmurs of "fixing". Kohli never had to face that kind of heat. He's been pampered by a very capable team and a more forgiving bunch of Indian fans. If he can't bring results like Ganguly watch him get torn apart by fans. !

The golden rule has always been : For Indian fans, Its good cricket only when India wins ! Kohli will face the music soon . Lets hope he is capable.

Poor guy, seemed a good, level headed coach.India had enjoyed success under him but it seems that was not enough.

It is unfortunate the folks in the sub continent have not evolved enough that they have to rely on foreign coaches to mentor them.

Feel sorry for him, Kohli has too much power and he doesn't deserve it after being such a coward in the final and making Dhoni basically do everything a captain should. Not leading from the front in a big final but can still get the coach (who's done a good job) sacked.

Disappoing if ita true about Kohli wanting him to go. I've also heard reports that Jumbo is going up in roles, in a similar role to Andrew strauss at ECB. Shame to see him go really. Really knew what he was doing.

Anybody but Sehwag. He's got as much coaching potential as Javed Miandad. Keep him away :59: .

Kohli has lost it lately. He is not the one who he pretends to be. Deep down he is still MC/BC type of player and those kind of characters are hard to deal with and specially when made captain. He has done horrible job as captain, he gets into unnecessary arguments with team Australia. He goes missing in Finals and Dhoni has to take over as the Captain. He does try hard to be someone who he isn't, a mature and respectful person.

Losing the coach Kumble is more hurting than CT final loss to Pak ...

Kumble we miss u :14:

Sad to hear. If anyone had to step down, it should have been Kohli and Rahane should be made captain.

Tactical captain > captain superstar.

Tactical captain will win you more matches by his brilliance in captaincy. Superstar player singlehandedly wont win you that many matches.

Today was the last day of Anil Kumble's contract with BCCI, he politely ended the contract with resignation .. :salute:salute

So the last breakdown they had was in England and Ravi Shastri pretty much walked in and became the coach now.

And now Kumble has gone too, though I wouldn't call this a breakdown.

Wonder who will be the next coach and how long they will stay for.

In dark over cricket coach job, Committee of Administrators disapprove fresh round of applications

The Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA) is learnt to have officially expressed its displeasure over the BCCI keeping it in the dark about the decision to invite fresh applications for the job of the India team’s coach after the withdrawal of Anil Kumble. At a meeting last week in Mumbai, the CoA — Vinod Rai, Vikram Limaye and Diana Edulji — questioned BCCI CEO Rahul Johri about the need to look beyond those who had already applied and why the panel was not kept in the loop. The CoA’s dissent is expected to figure in the minutes of that meeting.

According to BCCI sources, Johri’s explanation that potential coaches had stayed away earlier because of the assumption that Kumble would be retained didn’t go down well with the CoA.

“Not everybody was convinced by Johri’s explanation and Phase Two of the coach selection process was seen as unnecessary. He was even asked if new applications were invited at captain Virat Kohli’s behest,” said sources.

Earlier this month, former BCCI secretary Ajay Shirke had told The Indian Express that Kohli had favoured Ravi Shastri over Kumble a year ago.

Two weeks ago, BCCI secretary Amitabh Chaudhary had told reporters on the sidelines of the Champions Trophy that the board would share the list of candidates with the media by that evening, but is yet to do so. Sources said Shastri’s name doesn’t figure on that list, which had Virender Sehwag, Tom Moody, Lalchand Rajput, Richard Pybus and Dodda Ganesh.

Asked whether he had consulted the CoA before sending out the second invitation on June 23 for candidates to apply for the coach’s position, Johri told The Indian Express: “We had informed all concerned.”

But sources said that even some BCCI officials were upset with the way the selection process has unfolded, with some pointing fingers at the high-profile Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) of Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and V V S Laxman.

“On one hand, the BCCI says they are just following the process of calling an application for the head coach’s job. On the other hand, they haven’t interviewed a single candidate who applied for the job so far. (Former Australia fast bowler) Craig McDermott’s application was rejected because his application was received after the deadline. After all this, the CAC endorsed Kumble without meeting any candidate. So why is there this farce of calling for applications again?” said a BCCI official.

On June 20, BCCI issued a press release, which stated: “BCCI confirms that Mr Anil Kumble has withdrawn his services as…head coach for the senior India men’s team. While the Cricket Advisory Committee had endorsed an extension to his tenure as head coach, Mr Anil Kumble has decided not to continue as the coach.”

The CAC will meet on July 10 to start the process to select a new coach.

Meanwhile, the CoA is also upset over the BCCI’s reluctance to share three managers’ reports from last year, when Kumble was coach. “The CoA wants to know that if so much was happening behind the scenes in the dressing room, did the manager flag the rift?” said sources.

This looks more and moer fishy by the week, It looks increasingly likely that Kohli played a part in trying to get someone new in.
