The latest bollywood film to be banned in Pakistan after Aiyaary a few weeks ago is the Anushka Sharma's supernatural horror thriller Pari. The Pakistan censor board has described Pari as “anti-Islamic”.

Producer Prernaa Arora of KriArj Entertainment says she is “stumped” by the snub. “They (the Pakistan censor board) seem to be taking random decisions. How do we explain why they would think of Pari as anti-Islamic? Evil which the film portrays has no religion. We as a responsible production feel very strongly about causing offence to any community. Earlier our co-production Pad Man was banned in Pakistan for being anti-Islamic. Now Pari is also anti-Islamic. Can they please define anti-Islamic? I have no doubt Pakistan will find my next release Parmanu – The Story of Pokhran also anti-Islamic.” Parmanu – The Story of Pokhran which is co-produced by KriArj Entertainment and John Abraham is about the nuclear test explosions Indian government conducted at Pokhran in 1998.

Why would she be stumped if it is not allowed in Pakistan?

Its their country and they can ban anything they deem inappropriate.

I think a thread should be made every time Pakistan allows a movie. Keeping track of all these banned movies is getting too complicated.

Well the chest thumpers would have us believe that Pakistan is insignificant so why are they "stumped" if we ban their movies.

Pakistan is a Big Market for Bollywood, everytime any movie gets banned in Pakistan these Global Bollywood Stars can't stop crying about it.

But its still a shame that Pakistan has banned it. How is it anti-Islamic? And how is the naach gaana in new Pakistani movies Islamic?

They are stumped because they are calling it as Anti-Islamic.. If it was Anti-Pak, fully understandable.. as you know there are Muslims outside Pakistan and more or less equal number in India.. So it is understandable..

regarding the Pakistan market being insignificant, currently it is. Your best earning Indian movies earn less than what most of the flops in south Indian states earn... Kannada movies have the smallest market in south India and their biggest earner more than decade back earned more than twice that of Sultan in Pakistan last year

And the number of theaters in whole of Pakistan is probably lesser than what most of the smaller Indian states would have it. Last year's Box office earning of Bollywood movie Sultan's (highest Bollywood earner in pakistan that year) total earning was less than one single day box office earning of the same move in India

Pakistan is not a very significant market as most of the movies get released later than India and would have already been pirated. Potential is very high, especially as Pak has the same population as that of state like UP, but currently the average revenue generated is less than 5 percent.. Would the producer love to have that extra money, why not. Will it significantly dent their overall revenue if they miss it, not really.

See my comment above.. Pakistan is not that a big market currently.. Potentially, sure, a very big market..

Anyway all these bans are useless as majority of the Pakistanis watch the pirated versions of Indian movies as they will of this one as well.

The premise of the movie sounds interesting.

"Pari is a supernatural horror film in which a man attempts to help a woman named Ruksana, an abuse victim, who he found chained up in a hut."

But again not sure how the movie is unislamic ...

Get a life y'all Bollywood watchers. You lot should be the first one to get banned from everywhere.

Anti-Islamic is the wrong term to use for this movie. By their very nature most horror films would be considered unsuitable viewing for Islamic society whatever their intent because of the gore and violence, not to mention portrayal of evil spirits and such.

That would be the case if we are talking about Hollywood films, but I have no idea if the Indian movie industry churns out horror films which show the same level of violence. It may be they are quite tame in comparison in which case the reason for the ban would be more questionable.

Reason :
"The film not only mixed Quranic verses with Hindu chants but also portrayed Muslims in a negative light as they were shown using Quranic verses to do black magic"
Pak censor board
They also banned raees for the same reason "showing Muslims in negative light" ,yet they allowed padmavat in which muslim characters were portrayed barbaric and unethical.

I want to know whether pakistani movies always shows Muslims in good light ?

What would be the point of that, obviously Muslims are good and bad just like anybody else.

Don't ban it cause it's anti-islamic, coz it's not.

Ban it coz it seems like yet another terrible production from across the border.

Looks like a copy of the Exorcist.

If Pakistan censors feel it's not appropriate, we should accept their actions.

If the bolded part is true then this movie is definitely unislamic. Trying to show that Islam support magic is one of the biggest lie ever.

Using quranic ayahs for black magic ? . Ok how is the ban unjustifiable ?

Pakistan is the one country that can ruin any new movie in Bollywood if it wants to....Pakistan is the hub of piracy and can release any new movie a day before it is played. I remember there was a Shahrukh Khan movie that was released all over Nepal, Malaysia, Indonesia etc..before it was out because of some comments he made or something.

People do use Quran for Black magic .

The post is Gold , hopefully you are consistent on it w.r.t other authorities of Pakistan.

I disagree with the reason the movie has been banned. Generally, all Bollywood should be banned in Pak. Hope the next government does this.

Pakistan banning Indian movies reminds me of BCCI boycotting bilaterals against Pakistan. Almost as if they want to give them a taste of their own medicine. In an ideal world both countries would get over these things. Oh well.

This is one thing I always support whole heartedly. Bollywood should not just be banned but binned and dismantled and destroyed. An ugly abomination that should be wiped from the face of India.

Bollywood produces hideous movies these days anyway, they should all be banned

btw who watched these crap movies

first thing is nether india[Bollywood] and Pakistan film industry make movies on serious issue
like child abuse or how poor people live in these countries or how minority people face real danger day to day in these countries

second thing is nether of them any good anti -war movies which showed real horror of what war is
like full metal jacket or Apocalypse Now

As more and more Pakistanis start understanding English/Mandarin, the demand for trashy Bollywood content will cease too. Until then, I doubt Pakistan can afford to ban Bollywood completely.

Both Pakistan and India need to evolve to a point where banning crappywood won't be necessary. Secretly I wish bollywood with all its clowns had remained in pakistan to spread their ghatiyapan there and leave us Indians pure and pious.

Clowns and ghatiyapan in India isn't exclusive to Bollywood. From Mallu, Telugu to Bhojpuri cinema, there is simply no end to it. If anything, Bollywood makes it easier on eyes thanks to Pakistani looking superstars.

Pakistani industry on the other hand is truly pious, and deserves this Bolly-cleansing more than we do.

I'm don't get how Pakistan is a big market for bollywood movies since everything is pirated in Pakistan (also in India so not sure how they make money). Do people go to cinemas to watch the movie? Please explain.
