So Pakistan's quest for the second ODI world cup title begins in a few hours. No matter how successful we are in life and career (I have been been fortunate and blessed to be so, putting it with humility), we always want some small part of our success from the land of origin which in this case is Pakistan. But unfortunately there has been nothing positive in Pakistan for the past however many years thanks to political and social turmoils. Typically sports is something we all turn to for a nice feel good factor about the land. But Pakistan's performance in all other sports outside of cricket has been abysmal. This only leaves cricket as a source of that feel good factor.

I know this puts immense (and undue) expectation in my mind for the team to perform but one cannot help it if this is the only source of a possible feel good factor about Pakistan.

Given the above, is anyone else also nervous/anxious for the team to perform well?

it's quite common for cricket fans to feel nervous for their team but as a Pakistani Fan it's always more like a heart attack.

Pakistan won’t make the semis so nothing to be nervous about.

We’re more likely to finish bottom 4 than top 4.

Offcourse we all are nervous. That is what being a fan is about.

Pakistan doesnt have any other sport that takes place all year long. PSL is for one month, thus a World Cup is a marquee cricket event and we always hope against hope the team will win it this time. Even if we have failed in the last 7 World Cups, but a fan will always support, back his team and hope again. Yes, we will have heartbreaks if we get knocked out, but thats what sports and being fan is all about.

Often, before the start of the ODI World Cup I look back to my first World Cup which was the 2007 World Cup. How I looked at the groups and predicted that Pakistan would easily beat the 3 teams in their groups. Yet when we got thrown out of the tournament and the fans were angry and ready to give up on Pakistan cricket, they were all back supporting the team in the World T20 that took place in the same year.

It gets annoying with the so called fans that will watch every game of pakistan, follow the score cards and news, but will still come here and say we will lose. Yet, if we win, than they go into hiding just like during the Champions Trophy of 2017.

I am quite nervous, and will be extra nervous next saturday when we take on against India.

I'm 100% nervous

our team is a mess. Our batsmen (except Babar) are either terribly out of form or mediocre. Our backup batsmen have played a grand total of like 3 ODIs between them. The bowling attack is mid, even more so with Naseem out. Shaheen is our only good pacers, Haris Rauf is expensive and goes into spray gun mode, and our other bowlers are T20 merchants with no experience in 50 over cricket. The less about Shadab said the better, he's in terrible form these past few years (was he ever that good in ODI cricket anyways?) but he will continue to get matches over Usama Mir who is one of the few people in the squad on merit.

We got humiliated in the Asia Cup and are going into the biggest event of the sport with practically the same squad. I see this team winning 3 games max, but I pray I get proven wrong

I’m nervous thinking any score we post batting first may not be enough..

Really hope we end up chasing in most of our games

Not yet, but the bigger games always bring along a bit of nervous energy with them.

Nervous against Netherlands? Get real! If you lot are nervous against Netherlands, what will your condition be before the match against India?

Dependant on performance leading up to it. Likewise, india losing opening match would mean differing attitudes leading up to it

It is normal as a fan to be nervous before big games. Sometimes you can't even sleep night before big game lol.

First off, I congratulate you for being succesful in your life. May Allah continue to bring good fortune upon you ❤️❤️.

Secondly God has been trying his damn hardest to make pakistan succeed by giving them lifelines like he did in t20 2022 cup, Asia cup 2022 and he will try this cup ad well, it is unfortunate that despite godly intervention like Sri lanka giving 11 wides before the first ball even being bowled in the Asia cup, we still lost cause of rizzu. 😂😂.

Bro I'm supporting my home country Australia and by some extension my neighbouring country New Zealand.

I will support pakistan when nepotism ends and we start grooming players the way other players groom players via 2nd string sides, and selecting on merit, and all this nonsense media hype or babar being Don Bradman, Imam being top 5 odi players drama ends.

I say this as non biased as possible, looking at SENA and Indian sides, Pakistan stands no chance in hell unless God intervenes, even then expect rizzu and Babar and imam to undo all of God's work 😂😂. They've already managed to do so 2x lol.

Pakistan's chances of beating India with this line up are zero.

Only hope was naseem, Shaheen, Rauf trio doing the job. That ain't happening this time, and our batting can't compete. Kuldeep will eat babar, Bumrah will take care of Rizzu and Imam, Depending is fakhar or Abdullah open, doesn't matter cause siraj will handle the rest, Pandya is also a solid bowler.

We literally can't play any of their bowlers besides jadeja lol. And maybe pandya depending on the occasion.

I won't say that. Once both the team lock horns, past history and team strength goes out of the window. It's always about which team punches over strength on that particular day.

Not may expect Pakistan to reach Semifinal with poor openers and Naseem less bowling attack, and spin duo that will not trouble big teams.

This squad is on a similar level to the 2019 one but difference being other teams have improved at a much faster rate.

It wasn't a great performance today was it.

At 38/3 we were on the edge of a cliff and anything was possible, but it was heartening to see Saud and Rizwan bat well together and there was some effort from the lower order which took Pakistan to a decent total.

The bowling was a mixed bag against a fairly weak opposition.

It was a win, but not without problems and concerns.

It’s concerning, that we had 3 early wickets fall v Netherlands, a better team might have run through the rest for lesser score. And bowling wise whilst we recovered, the Netherlands started off really well I think around 100-2. If we bat or bowl like this against better opposition we don’t stand a chance.

It’d be great to beat India next week of course, but I fear the Indian batsmen are going to be a level above us playing in India. If India bat 1st I can see them getting around 350-375, and we won’t stand a chance chasing that under that pressure and against their bowlers.

I was very nervous today at 38/3 but good to see Saud and Rizwan pulling it out as @Saj said. I also wanted to check the game thread here but somehow felt I will jinx the team if I read or post in any game thread or forum post (irrational fan superstition) so I stayed away from PP for the duration of the game.

The fact that Pakistan could be bowled out by a team like Netherlands is concerning.

Pakistan seems to be lacking in a few departments but that's a usual Pakistan of slow concerned start in tournaments.

They will likely play similar concerned game against Sri Lanka but I have a strong feeling Pakistan will pull it off against India and that will inject much needed confidence in the side. India wouldn't know what hit them, bring it ON and back your team

Not with this playing XI. We have assembled the finest possible starting lineup. I would be astonished if we fail to clinch the World Cup. The crucial strategy is to maintain the current playing XI until the final match. Any alterations at this point could spell our downfall

Start was a nervy one but the way out middle and lower order stood up, I am impressed.

Pakistan won’t make the semis so nothing to be nervous about.

We’re more likely to finish bottom 4 than top 4.
Oh cmon now. Let's back the boys. Don't be a downer. We are capable of finishing top 4

Be realistic, stop overhyping the players, lower your expectations, and all your nervousness will then go away.

Anything is possible in ODIs, but there are at least 5 teams in this World Cup whose batting is superior to us.

As a PCT fan you are always nervous when they are playing but after watching today's wonderful chase I am very confident that Pakistan is going to finish in the top 4.

Man, I was super nervous today when I woke up to find Pakistan lose 2 early wickets with Babar gone. To be honest the bad bowling and fielding by SL also helped alleviate concerns besides Pakistan's good chase.

How pakistan chased down this massive target against SL, i am getting my confidence back on them.

They are getting closer to a good XI but a few tweaks and harsh decisions are still needed. However, I think they can solve most of these issues within the next seven games and put themselves in a prime position to win the semifinal.

Not just the batting but Hasan Ali has also looked good. That's a real surprise and has given me confidence about a proper run by Pakistan.

Now they need to hope Usama Mir can solve the spinner issue that is lingering in the background. Those middle-overs are a serious weakness on flat pitches.

Pakistan always comes up with something extraordinary. This chase is evidence of that fact and their confidence will be boosted with this win.

I wasn't nervous before but with this win I am. They will stumble and not make into semis now.. peaked too soon

Things will get tougher from here on .India game can damage pak psychologically and than their is Afghanistan whose spinners will be licking their lips on spinning track of chennai .

The pressure is now on us, not on Pakistan. They have nothing to lose if they lose on the 14th. While we have everything to lose if we lose that match.

Little bit of nervousness is normal when you’re a fan of a team. You are feeling a fraction of the nervousness the players would feel. Means you are in tune with them.

Unless you’re Iftikhar Ahmed then you are immune to nervousness.

My excitement as a fan is definitely transgressing over the anxiety+nervousness land now.

If Pakistan bat first - I'm on the edge (borderline scared) if Bumrah will make any inroads against the top order.
If Pakistan field first - I'm on the edge if Rohit or Gill/Ishan will unleash against Shaheen early on.

Will this be a 7-1 result or an 8-0 result ... we will know soon.

if Pakistan bats second then there is a chance of 7-1.

However India is looking so organized it would be 70 / 30 ration in favor of India.

Batting 2nd is the way to go for Pakistan. Defending is very difficult on these grounds.

Today was a big heartbreak. It is not just the loss but the humiliating defeat. It felt like we were barely in the game and the boys just felt overwhelmed and scared of the big stage.

We were well in the game by the 30th over of our innings and then we imploded.

They still have enough talent to recover and win the cup

England has a great chance of sneaking past Pakistan into top 4 with a win over Afg tomorrow.

Pakistan now has a run-rate in minus and we may see them dropping to number 6 or number 7 on the table before their next game against Australia.

I'm more concerned about the dignity of Pakistan cricket with this squad representative of us.

I am not that concerned about the dignity given there was no lower point in Pakistan cricket than the 2010 Spox Fixing saga, and we bounced back back with dignity with flying colours.

Pakistan is a master at bouncing back with dignity! :)

That was different and was led by tough men like Misbah, YK, Azhar Ali, Ajmal and Sarfraz. This team is a bunch of boys with no maturity or mental strength.
My 10 year old son would take most of these boys down.

This! Our biggest opponents saying we do not have any fight in us after giving us a whooping defeat is a lot more humiliating then even the spot fixing saga of the yesteryears in my opinion.

Dignity hit from the fixing saga - "we do not have ethics" which sort of goes along with such scandals from most other major team (Indian fixing in 90s, South Africa in 90s, Australia's sandpaper gate ...)

Dignity hit from opponents saying we have no fight - "we are not brave enough".

As much as the embarrassment from fixing is bad, the embarrassment from "Pakistan are not brave enough" from our biggest enemies is so much worse in my mind.

Country is in shambles, we are not as good in other sports. Only sport we can compete (and can look forward to as a positive national thing) we are not only heavily defeated but verbally humiliated by arch enemies! This is gut wrenching for me

What the Pakistani fans should complain about:

- Top 4 each scored 20 or over but none went on to score big
- None of teh batsmen had a s/r of over 100
- Bowlers appeared toothless
- Number of dot balls played out by pakistan
- Not even a 6 in whole innings
- Not hit a single 6 in PP in 2023 after facing over 1000 balls
- AFG played teh whole 50 overs but PAK got all out

What the Pakistani fans are worried about:

- Crowd Booing
- No Pak fans in the stadium
- A small section of crowd chanting Jai Sri Ram

Not really even if they get to the semis or final they will get mauled and annihilated by India again who are going all the way so rather save the embarrassment again and exit in the group stages

They still have every chance to reach the semi-finals and you can never be sure when team Pakistan is playing. They looked good until the 29 overs in their innings and were very much in control of the game but then they collapsed and couldn't make a competitive total. I am sure that if they are again at 150/2, they will surely going to make a total of around 280-300 that would be very competitive. Their next game against Australia would be very important and if they can beat them, they are very likely to reach the semifinals where they can once again meet India.

I was nervous for us at 155-2 which says it all. I'm always waiting for the bubble to burst... and oh boy did it.

It wasn't a dominant 155-2 it was like navigating icebergs in the sea, creeping and ambling past in a dominant ship, but just never quite safe and then boom, iceberg hits.

Beat Australia and Pakistan are in a good position for the top 4.

Lose that match and they still have NZ, England, S Africa to play and they'd probably have to beat them all which is a tough ask.

I guess the worse scenario has come true and now we must beat NZ/ENG/SA or at least 2 out of these 3 while dodging the Afghans.

Do not underestimate Bangladesh

They definitely have a more balanced batting line up than Pakistan
