ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan is of the view that social media apps like TikTok are badly harming the society's values and should be blocked, Information Minister Shibli Faraz said in an interview with The News.

While talking to the publication, Shibli Faraz said, “PM Imran is extremely concerned about the ‘growing obscenity and vulgarity’ in the society and has directed all the relevant sections to check the trend before it destroys the socio-religious values of Pakistani society”.

The information minister said that the premier had discussed this issue with him not once or twice but 15 or 16 times and wants a comprehensive strategy to check the vulgarity being spread in society through mainstream outlets as well as social media and its applications.

The prime minister in an earlier interview had also shared his views on the matter when his attention was drawn on the barbaric motorway gang-rape incident.

"World history tells when you increase fahashi (vulgarity) in the society, two things happen: sex crimes increase and the family system breaks down," the prime minister had said, underscoring that it is not only the responsibility of law enforcement agencies to battle out the prevalent sexual crimes in the country in fact it is the responsibility of the entire society to fight against such heinous offences.

Shibli Faraz said that the premier recently told him that apps like TikTok are badly harming society's values and thus should be blocked. The minister said that he told the prime minister that the owners of such apps will first be approached to respect the values of society and ensure that no indecent and obscene content is shared.

“He (Imran Khan) is a man who has spent his life in the West and thus understands the strength of our social and cultural values, which must be protected,” Faraz said, assuring every step will be taken to check obscenity.

According to The News report, PM Imran has also directed Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to cleanse the internet, social media and various apps of vulgarity for users in Pakistan.

PTA Chairman Maj General (retd) Amir Azeem Bajwa recently told the publication that PM Imran Khan is worried about the destruction caused to the social, cultural and religious values of society by vulgarity.

The PTA chief said that as per the constitution and law of the country, nothing obscene, vulgar and indecent could be shared.

Recently, the PTA had blocked five dating applications, which were found involved in spreading nudity and promoting homosexuality by sharing indecent photographs and videos of lesbians and gays.

Earlier in July, the telecom regulator had also issued a final warning to Chinese-owned social media app TikTok, ordering it to filter out any obscene content. It had also blocked the video-streaming app, Bigo Live, though the ban was lifted a few days later once the platform agreed to moderate “immoral and indecent” content.

The PTA has also directed internet operators to ensure that no “immoral or illegal” content is made accessible to users.

Bollywood should be banned, TikTok should be banned. Next he will advocate for Netflix to be banned as well.

Looks like Imran wants us to only watch Ertugrul all day long.

It couldn't have come sooner, this is most useless and disgusting app, ky has no rules no values, pure garbage.

Imran has gone mad! After spending his youthful years as the world’s biggest playboy, now, he wants everybody to watch Ertugrul and listen to Tariq Jameel and Zaid Hamid.

Idiotic statement. Immy should focus on the issues we have right now instead of nonsensical comments that have no bearing on the issues that affect us. If someone doesn't like tiktok don't use it. Noone is forcing you to. If I don't like lamb I wouldn't ban it, I'd just not eat it

To the contrary, if you ban pornography, co education and social media apps, it will only serve to increase people's appetites and desperation.

Family values are a function of your upbringing first and foremost

Ban TikTok, ban bollywood, ban youtube, ban PUBG, silence anyone who speaks up against the military or the government, ban Tindr, ban TV channels, ban VPN's. Ban everything and turn Pakistan into an authoritarian state.

Idiotic comments. Wish he would learn to govern rather than cover up his incompetency with moral policing.

Seems just like a rehash of his Bollywood speech except this time the target is TikTok. Is it not the same speech being quoted again?

LOL

The “west” that these people are whining about have better standards than religious societies in Asia and elsewhere. The sick are taken care of better, minorities are looked after better, the rule of law is there (and enforced) to protect all, those who cannot work are given an income, those who cannot afford a house are given social housing etc.

People like Khan (and others like him in the region) like to go on about bringing back the seventh-century state of Medina (or in some Indians case the Ram Rajya from several thousand years ago) yet these same people bad mouth the west. These leaders cannot even give their people a decent standard of living, comparable to the west, yet they are having dreams about Riyasat-e-Medina or a Ram Rajya.

There is a difference in saying it should be blocked vs saying it will be blocked. He is trying to score political points, nothing wrong with that, as long as it does not actually get blocked.

Maybe he’s learned from the mistakes he made in his youth and doesn’t want young Pakistani boys and girls to fall in the same trap?

He turned out fine. But not everybody does.

Though we should not judge others but IK is as fake as they come.

TikTok trend featuring tiny magnets could be life-threatening - and NHS wants them banned

A TikTok trend where teenagers use tiny magnets as fake tongue piercings has prompted the NHS to call for the metal balls to be banned.

The viral challenge involves people putting two magnetic balls on either side of their tongue to give the appearance of a tongue piercing.

But accidentally swallowing more than one magnet can be life-threatening and cause serious damage within hours.

The NHS said there has been a rise in hospital admissions among older children as many have taken part in the online craze, leading the NHS to issue a patient safety alert earlier this month.

An 11-year-old is among those who suffered serious complications after apparently swallowing several of the magnets, according to Worcester News.

Ellis Tripp was rushed to hospital and forced to undergo a six-hour operation to remove five inches of his bowel.

His mother, Amy Clarke, pleaded with other parents to watch out for the TikTok trend.

"I'm in a nightmare. This TikTok craze could/would have killed him if left any longer. Please talk to your children and tell them how DANGEROUS THESE ARE," she wrote on Facebook.

A 13-year-old girl is also reported to have had major surgery after trying out the social media trend.

Her mother, Faye Elizabeth from Rainhill, said her daughter swallowed 15 of the magnetic beads, according to the Liverpool Echo.

The tiny balls are less than 6mm in diameter and can be easily swallowed.

Once ingested, they can become forced together in the intestines or bowels, squeezing the tissue and cutting off the blood supply.

At least 65 children have been admitted to hospital in England for urgent surgery after swallowing magnets in the last three years.

Professor Simon Kenny, paediatric surgeon and national clinical director for children and young people at NHS England, has called for the magnets to be banned.

He said: "There is nothing fun for children or their parents about surgery to remove magnets that have been swallowed and become stuck together through different parts of the intestines, or the long-term physical problems and internal scarring that can be left behind.

"I would urge parents to be aware of the dangers associated with magnetic toys but ultimately, the only way we can prevent future incidents is to stop these items being sold altogether."

The NHS said anyone who has swallowed magnets should not wait to develop symptoms and should instead go to A&E immediately.

IK is spot on. As a parent you will realise what he means. Lets not put faith in resident Pakistan haters on PP.

Remember, these pseudo Hindutvaas supported RSS quest to ban Twitter and wait for this, did ban Tik Tok.

Move on from the haters and pretenders.

Such a boomer take. Very rich coming from someone who did far 'worse' (by Islamic and Pakistani standards) in his youth than watch some cringey videos.
