Are contests such as Miss World demeaning to women?

Charity and free stuff cannot be forever unless the person is disabled mentally or has a condition that renders him or her out of work force.

The idea should be to give those poor people the skills to survive. Giving them free food or housing will never work. Nobody should get free stuff unless they are disabled. Adult industry at least in the west is controlled and the women have to agree to perform. No one will force her as laws are strict.

Exploitation is when people take advantage of poor women just because they give them money and food. Women there has no say and have to obey her abuser.

It was your contention that working in the adult industry is preferable to begging and charity. You introduced the charity angle and I suspect without thinking it through properly.

If a woman is destitute and desperate and to ameliorate her condition she takes to prostitution, that amounts to her being exploited. Moreover, whether the customer is aware of her material condition is irrelevant; the fact that her desperation has led her to make an undesirable choice is the clincher.

If you were to offer the woman in the example above any other employment and even if it was substantially less paid, most self-respecting women would prefer that to selling their body.

Miss Universe 2021: India's Harnaaz Sandhu wins amid controversies.

This year's competition met with several contestants defying pressure to boycott in support of the Palestinians.

ISRAEL: Miss India Harnaaz Sandhu was crowned Miss Universe in the Israeli city of Eilat early Monday, with several contestants defying pressure to boycott in support of the Palestinians.

The 70th edition of the annual pageant, held in Israel for the first time, has also faced complications from the coronavirus pandemic.

Sandhu took the top prize in the Red Sea resort with Paraguay’s Nadia Ferreira first runner-up and Miss South Africa Lalela Mswane taking the second runner-up spot.

South Africa’s Ministry of Sports, Culture and Arts had urged its contestant to stay away from Eilat, citing “atrocities committed by Israel against Palestinians.”

The call echoed Palestinian groups who pleaded with contestants to avoid the event.
The Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel wrote: “We urge all participants to withdraw, to avoid complicity in Israel’s apartheid regime and its violation of Palestinian human rights.”

The 80 contestants also included Miss Morocco Kawtar Benhalima and Miss Bahrain Manar Nadeem Deyani, whose majority Muslim nations normalised ties with Israel last year.

In an interview with AFP in Jerusalem late last month, the outgoing Miss Universe Andrea Meza, of Mexico, said the pageant should steer clear of politics. "Miss Universe isn’t a political movement, nor a religious one. It’s about women and what they can offer.”

Muslim-majority Indonesia and Malaysia, nations that do not have diplomatic relations with Israel, have not sent contestants but both cited complications related to the pandemic, not Israel’s rights record.

The United Arab Emirates, which also normalised ties with Israel last year and where Prime Minister Naftali Bennett made a historic visit Sunday, has also not sent a candidate.
But the UAE said that was “due to time constraints,” in selecting its national winner.

Contestants for the pageant landed in Israel late last month and have since toured sites, sometimes coming under criticism for cultural insensitivity.

In one stop in the Bedouin city of Rahat, the candidates wore robes with traditional Palestinian embroidery while rolling grape leaves — which Miss Philippines Beatrice Luigi Gomez tweeted was a “Day in the life of a Bedouin.”

The Bedouin are a traditionally nomadic people who belong to the community of Palestinian citizens of Israel. They have long complained of discrimination in housing and education.

“Colonialism, racism, cultural appropriation, patriarchy, whitewashing, all in one place,” tweeted Ines Abdel Razek of the advocacy group the Palestine Institute for Public Diplomacy.

Participants in the pageant, which was co-owned by Donald Trump before he became US president, must be between the ages of 18 and 28 and may never have married or had a child.

Following the quarantine in Jerusalem, the contestants used several stops on their way to the southern city of Eilat for taking photos.

"Coming here has just been such a wholesome experience," Miss Morocco, Kawtar Benhalima, told The Times of Israel. "Because of the historical side of things, because I'm here experiencing Miss Universe, because I am learning every day."

However, after having posted photos and videos by using the hashtag #visitisrael, an uproar backlashed on social media.

The depicted scenes followed the tour's title, "A day in the life of a Bedouin," with the beauty contestants wearing traditional Palestinian dresses and making sweets.

Outrage on social media addressed the oblivion necessary to present Palestinian heritage as Israeli culture.

"Congratulations India" was trending on twitter and I was wondering what the hell had happened. Turns out an Indian girl had won the Miss Universe pageant, a competition I had no idea was taking place, and seemed like a lot of Paraguayans were unhappy about the result and calling it a robbery.

Always find these pageant competitions a bit amusing tbh. There's no shortage of drama:91:

can you name various fields and than we will make objective analysis of leaders in these fields.

go on I am really curious.....

CEOs of big tech firms. Please start the "objective analysis of leaders".

he said fields not firms so there is the difference , now we constitute a new field for your catrgory , "success of diasporas" and "Indian american tech CEOS" will be one sub field in this newly created field of ours.

In the 90s when Sushmita Sen and Aishwarya Rai won - beauty pageants became big news in India. every beauty pageants was watched with so much anticipation in India. In the 90s winning beauty pageant was like winning cricket world cup. Most Indians still remember the joy when Sushmita Sen won in 1994 and the devastation when Manpreet Brar came 2nd following year

Then slowly it became clear these pageants were scripted. When Priyanka Chopra won after a wrong answer - it became so obvious that she got trolled badly in Indian media. After that interest diminished in India and no wonder Indian girls stopped winning as well

Honestly most Indians did not even know there was Miss Universe happening yesterday night. Nobody knew about Harnaaz Sandhu either

Not against beauty pageants though. There is little harm in doing such events. If anything such events help women in conservative societies like India.to go out and seek education and a job instead of staying at home. It also opens doors to Bollywood for aspiring girls

You are quibbling over semantics. Every field can be argued to be a "sub field" of something more inclusive. For example, beauty pageants may be considered a "sub field" of "contests for attractiveness" which could also include "most beautiful women" lists in magazines.

Still waiting for your analysis of the field "CEOs of big tech firms", as you are "really curious".

Imho it’s an useless competition and someday women themselves will boycott it.

Latin countries take this way too seriously should just had it to them..

Indians are leading every field! Good job!

Winning a genetic lottery and using that to objectifying any gender is a field now? lol

Oh yea! person had to answer a random question so that makes it much better, lol.

These pageants are nothing but objectification of women. It is demeaning and hurtful to them.

whats the criteria of this event ? i can find 1000 of good looking and beautiful girl in my neighborhood. i cant understand it.

Your post captures the problem nicely, albeit in a weird way. Its meant to objectify women and thats exactly how a majority of the world looks at these things.

Indeed such competitions show ladies as sexual objects of desire. No way are the winners the prettiest in the world, impossible. I don't need to be told or advertised how beautiful Pak ladies are.

Dressing in such revealing costumes is against Pak and Muslim culture, we all know that.

The winners were selected to get TRPs from India at the time, and land some contracts in the fashion and beauty world. Nothing more, nothing less.

Karolina Bielawska from Poland won the title of international beauty pageant Miss World 2021.
Indian-American Shree Saini from the United States bagged the first runner-up title, followed by Olivia Yace from Cote d'Ivoire as the second runner-up.

The pageant took place on March 16 (March 17 IST) in San Juan, Puerto Rico, after it was delayed in 2020 due to COVID-19.

Femina Miss India World 2020 Manasa Varanasi represented India at the Miss World 2021. She reached the Top 13 contestants but could not make it to the Top 6 finalists.

The newly crowned Miss World is preceded by Miss World 2019 Toni-Ann Singh from Jamaica.
