Mohammad Hafeez - 30 t20 matches - Avg 19- SR 115
One day - 30 matches - Avg 18- SR 52.

Shoaib Malik - t20- 30 matches - Av 25- SR 114
One day - matches 20- average - 20- SR 61

Those figures are mediocre and yet these two players continued to get chances to even further there mediocre careers. Both played a combined total of 600 matches for Pak.

Why are we so keen to write career obituaries for our current players , when these two played so much beyond what they deserved .

hafeez and malik got chances because they were tagged as all rounders. whilst hafeez became a good test and odi opener neither player became dominant t20i players.

many players from that era hid under the all rounder tag, providing sporadic performances with bat or ball.

the problem with our current batsman is the lack of obvious development, and in haider and khushdils case, what looks like a regression.

tbf to haider he was in form against west indies, before he was dropped for ifti and number 4. there was no justification for that, now he's playing like someone who has had no competitive cricket for months.

If we gave enough opportunities to the likes of khushdil and Ifti etc it is possible they will deliver similar performances to the likes of Malik and Hafeez .
I am not saying they should but nowadays it seems every two games your either a hero or zero .

Agreed. Older fans who were watching cricket in early 2000s know this really well, but younger fans did not see Hafeez/Malik in first 30 matches. Malik I don’t think started as a batsman anyway, I think he was no10 or something in 99/00.

Yes, I was surprised to see that Haider was dropped as well.
He actually did OK in Bangladesh as well when others around him were failing, and saved Pak from embarrassment.
I have no clue why he was dropped? Does anyone have official stance?

official stance, from the team where the coach says people who question the national team middle order arent really supporters.

pcb really need to sort out saqlains media skills.

Lol! I don't find Yousuf and Saqi are coaching materials, but that’s a debate for another time.

If I had to venture a guess, I think Babar/Saqi went with the “experience” of Ifti at 4, which meant Haider had to make way for Fakhar and Ifti. Ifti’s decent performance in Aus during last tour was probably factored in given next WC is in Aus. Fakhar obviously gets the chances because he keeps doing well in ODIs and brings “experience”.
Unlucky for Haider, but he should now get all 7 games, and if he’s good enough, he will come through…
