People in Pakistan who follow Test cricket ardently are the minority. PPers are cricket nerds and they do not represent the nation. For the country, the third Test vs the WI was not even 10% as important as the match against India in the Champions Trophy.
Everyone in the country - even with passive interest in cricket - turned up for that match, while half of the country were not even aware that we had a Test series vs the WI.
The only hype was for the retirements of Younis and Misbah, not the series itself. We don't like to admit it, but cricket is centered around India for a lot of people, and that is why the schadenfreude when they lose. While the point that Pakistan cricket is centered around India is certainly up for debate, there is no denying that an ICC tournament match vs India is always the most important one for the country, where the passion for cricket has started to dwindle slowly because of the persistent of mediocrity of the team.
However, nothing unites them more than a Pakistan-India match, even though the result tends to be a foregone conclusion.
