Argentina defeat France 4-2 on penalties after a 3-3 draw to win the 2022 FIFA World Cup

Morocco going down with lots of injuries. It’s been a thrilling ride for them and they can be very proud, but it’s also turning out to be a long tournament & is starting to take its toll now.

Looks like Croatia are winning this one.

It's okay. Both can feel like 3rd. It is a dead rubber game.

Farewell to Luka Modric. He seems like a humble guy.

Modrin, Ronaldo, Messi, and Suarez. End of an era.

Congratulations to Croatia for the bronze medal, they are a tremendous team for such a small country.

Adios Luka Modric, you have been a magnificent player. Enjoy your time away from football.

Morocco lost the last 2 matches, but they can still be incredibly proud of what they have achieved in this tournament.

It should be a historic day tomorrow no matter who win.

If France win, they would be the first team in 60 years to win back to back World Cups.

If Argentina win, Messi would get his first World Cup win and can cement his GOAT status further.

Superb goals from Josko Gvardiol and Mislav Orsic helped Croatia beat Morocco 2-1 to finish in third place for the second time at a World Cup.

The victory also sees Croatia captain Luka Modric end what is likely to be his last World Cup with a bronze medal, although the 37-year-old has yet to call time on his international career.

Defeat for Morocco saw them miss out on the chance to become the first African nation to pick up a medal at a World Cup, while Croatia's victory meant a European nation has now won the third-place play-off in the last 11 tournaments.

World Cup final: Argentina vs France
Will WC stars be ready when the PL restarts?

Croatia took a seventh-minute lead through a stunning diving header from Gvardiol to cap off a fine tournament for the impressive 20-year-old centre-back.

But Morocco responded immediately as Achraf Dari nodded home from close range just two minutes later.

Croatia restored their lead, though, in the 42nd minute with a wonderful curling winner from Orsic as his first-time effort inside the box bent past Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou and went in off the far post.

Morocco came close to a late equaliser but Croatia goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic denied Youssef En-Nesyri to ensure they claimed their second World Cup bronze medal after achieving the feat in 1998.

Turkey in 2002 was 3rd, so they will still be better than Morocco by 1 place lol but Morocco as such played better than them.

Deepika Padukone Off To Qatar, Expected To Unveil FIFA World Cup Trophy

Popular Bollywood actor Deepika Padukone has flown off to Qatar and is expected to unveil the FIFA World Cup trophy at the Lusail Iconic Stadium in Qatar ahead of the final on Sunday. She was photographed at the Mumbai airport where Deepika was all smiles. The Lionel Messi-led Argentina will face defending champions France in the title clash on Sunday.

Meanwhile, France coach Didier Deschamps was sweating on the fitness of several key players on Saturday as his team battled a mystery virus on the eve of the World Cup final against Argentina. With little more than 24 hours to go before the world champions face Lionel Messi and Argentina at Doha's Lusail Stadium on Sunday, France have been left reeling by a viral outbreak that is believed to have affected five players so far.

Central defenders Raphael Varane and Ibrahim Konate, and winger Kingsley Coman were the latest players to be laid low by the illness, forced to miss a training session on Friday.

That came two days after Adrien Rabiot and Dayot Upamecano were ruled out of Wednesday's semi-final victory over Morocco.

Players, staff and other sources close to the French squad have spoken of a range of symptoms affecting the team in recent days including fever, stomach pain and headaches.

Both Deschamps and France captain Hugo Lloris said Saturday they had no further medical updates as they appeared at a pre-match press conference just after 11:30 am local time.

"I left quite early this morning from the camp -- they were all still asleep," Deschamps said. "I haven't had any recent updates.

"We are trying to take as many precautions as possible, to adapt as necessary and get on with it. Obviously it would be better if this wasn't happening but we are handling it as well as possible with our medical staff."

Lloris, who also said he had not seen his team-mates early Saturday, added: "We are never really prepared for this type of thing but we are trying to prepare in the best way possible."

There are some similarities between this side and the one of Turkey's in 2002. I think on paper this team is stronger.

Turkey got knocked out by an amazing Brazil side whereas Morrocco will feel more aggrieved when you consider the lower calibre of opposition that were left to beat in order to lift the cup.

Turkey's journey was easier than Morocco's.

Turkey faced Japan, Senegal, Brazil, and South Korea in knockouts. Morocco faced Spain, Portugal, France, and Croatia.

I am happy for both though.

With so many injuries France are still in with a good chance to win back 2 back World Cups. Whadda team Les Blues are.

Croatia is a top class tournament team.

They know how to win.

Best game I've seen Croatia play all world cup. I feel they could have been a bit more adventurous in the earlier games, they played some really good football today when they went to a more adventurous formation. But you can't knock third place when you look at the teams who didn't make it even to the last four.

2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar: Matchday & Tournament Thread

Close to six hours to go for what promises to be a cracker of a Final. It´s Messi versus Mbappe, it´s Argentina versus France. Two best teams of the tournament up against each other on the big stage; it can´t get better than this, it can´t get bigger than this. Can´t wait!

France playing their 1st match at the Lusail stadium, while Argentina are playing their 5th game here.

So advantage Argentina, I would say.

Maradona - daylight - Messi.

With that rubbish cross hes looking like Maradonnas sister.

Diego had nerves of steel, something which Messi lacks imo.

He's always bottled it.. levels with the greats that even subs can inspire their team to trophies against favourites.

I think Dutch have the courage to take this now...too much nous

Haha!

Yes, Maradonna had nerves of steel, and balls of steel! He'd have wrapped it up in 90 minutes.

Never run your mouth against the GOAT. Hope your learned something about football.

Messi creates world record in FIFA WC final vs France, Argentina captain surpasses Matthaus and Maldini in elite list

Argentina captain Lionel Messi has shattered multiple records in the FIFA World Cup 2022 final against France at the Lusail Stadium on Sunday. Messi is the first men's player in FIFA World Cup history to score in every round at a single edition.

Leading two-time champions Argentina in the final of the FIFA World Cup 2022 on Sunday, talisman Lionel Messi has shattered a massive record by surpassing Germany great Lothar Matthaus in an exclusive list. One of the greatest players in the history of the beautiful game, Messi created a world record when Argentina squared off against defending champions France in the final of the Qatar World Cup at the Lusail Stadium.

One of only six men to play in five editions of the FIFA World Cup, Argentina captain Messi has recorded his 26th appearance at the grandest stage. The 35-year-old has surpassed Germany's Matthaus to become the most-capped player in the history of the FIFA World Cup. No player has played more matches than the Argentina talisman in the history of the showpiece event. Rewriting history in the 2022 edition of the FIFA World Cup, the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner recently shattered Gabriel Batistuta's record in the semi-final stage of the prestigious event.

Messi was on target for the two-time champions in Argentina's 3-0 win over Croatia at the FIFA World Cup semi-finals. The 35-year-old eclipsed Batistuta by scoring his 11th goal for Argentina at the FIFA World Cup. The charismatic leader of La Albiceleste holds the record for most goals (11) scored by an Argentina player at the FIFA World Cup.

Messi now also holds the record of playing the most number of minutes at the FIFA World Cup. Messi has surpassed Italy legend Paolo Maldini, who appeared for 2,217 minutes at the FIFA World Cup. Messi created history by going past Maldini in the first half of the FIFA World Cup 2022 final. Since his debut at the grandest stage in 2006, Messi has recorded 19 appearances as captain in the FIFA World Cup.

The record goal-scorer of the South American giants is followed by Rafa Marquez (17) and Diego Maradona (16). Messi is the only player to record an assist in five editions of the World Cup. The Argentina captain became the highest goal scorer at the Qatar World Cup when he scored his 6th goal to give his side an early lead in the final. Messi is the first men's player in FIFA World Cup history to score in every round at a single edition. Messi-led Argentina side is aiming to become the second team in World Cup history to lift the famous trophy after losing their opening game. Former champions Spain achieved the lesser-known feat in the 2010 edition of the FIFA World Cup.

I think this just might have been the best World Cup of all time.

Lionel Messi has led Argentina to World Cup glory after beating France on penalties (4-2) in one of the most thrilling climaxes in final history.

Historic World Cup .

Congratulations Argentina 🇦🇷

Played with heart & passion . Messi joins Diego as GOAT , fully deserved it after a special career .

Congratulations Qatar 🇶🇦 for producing best World Cup ever

And one for all those that tried to spread negativity regarding this tournament.

It was brilliant, a great spectacle and so well organised.

Never run your mouth against the GOAT. Hope your learned something about football.

As a millenial you have never seen Maradonna play live. That's why I refuse to debate GOAT status with millienials.

Stick with Messi vs Ronaldo debate, and stop changing the debate now to Maradonna vs Messi now that Messi is a WC winner.

Maradonna - The GOAT.

:)

Indeed.

This was a fantastic tournament. Host did a brilliant job.

Take that, haters.

And probably you have never seen Pele play as well, so the debate will continue till eternity.

That save by Martinez right at end of game was pretty much match winning, as it took game to penalties.

Qatar should be proud of event they put on, and the final was icing on the cake.

Argentine goalkeeper was awarded the goalkeeper of the tournament award (golden glove award).

He deserved it.

Not the biggest fan of the sport but always watch World Cups. I knew ths bloke Messi was special when I first saw him in 2006. But didn't think he'd be in the conversation for GOAT status !

A legendary career . Commiserations to the French. Mbappe is one helluva player too. A very enjoyable final

Messi is getting golden ball award. He is the player of the tournament. What a end to his career!

Lionel Messi finally achieved his World Cup dream as Argentina won their third crown on penalties following one of the greatest finals in the tournament's history at Lusail Stadium.

Argentina won 4-2 in the shootout after a spectacular game which developed into the much-anticipated confrontation between the 35-year-old maestro Messi and his France opposite number Kylian Mbappe, who scored a hat-trick - the first in a World Cup final since 1966 - but still ended up on the losing side.

Messi looked to be securing the one major honour missing from his glittering collection in comfort as Argentina cruised into a two-goal lead, only for an explosive intervention from Mbappe turned a spectacular encounter on its head with two goals inside a minute late on.

Messi had given Argentina lead from the penalty spot in the 23rd minute following Ousmane Dembele's foul on Angel Di Maria. It made him the first player in World Cup history to score in the group stage, last 16, quarter-final, semi-final and final of a single tournament.

He then contributed a delicate touch within a magnificent counter-attack that ended with Brighton's Alexis Mac Allister setting up Di Maria for the second 13 minutes later.

Argentina were untroubled until the closing stages, only for Mbappe to give France a lifeline from the penalty spot with nine minutes left - then restore equality with a magnificent volley moments later.

Messi bundled Argentina back in front in extra time, but Mbappe completed his treble from the spot two minutes from the end of a frantic, chaotic added spell.

And so it went to penalties, with the two greats opening the scoring. But Argentina and Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez saved from Kingsley Coman, before Aurelian Tchouameni missed, leaving Gonzalo Montiel to win the World Cup.

Messi, a World Cup winner at last, collapsed to his knees in the centre circle and was engulfled by jubilant Argentina team-mates.

Messi becomes the first player to win a second golden ball after winning his first one in 2014. Another record broken by the GOAT.

Before the WC I thought Argentina were laboured and looked poor. Messi seemed to have slowed down but today they showed the mental strength needed to win the WC. Well deserved

This is the greatest match of football in the history of the sport. Hands down, no contest.

Where is Messi.. Where is Messi..
Lol..Saudi Arabian fans trolls after one fluke win against Argentina..

Tight slap in the face.

Just when you thought qatar couldnt do something better than this, they give a robe to messi :)))
