"Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger described the criticism he has had this season as "a disgrace" he will "never forget".

The Frenchman, 67, has faced fierce protests from fans calling for him to leave the club he has led since 1996.

"I don't mind criticism because we are in a public job," he told BBC Sport's Football Focus before Saturday's FA Cup final against Chelsea at Wembley.

"I believe there's a difference between being criticised and being treated in a way that human beings don't deserve."

He added: "The lack of respect from some has been a disgrace and I will never accept that. I will never forget it.

"The behaviour of some people during the season, that is what hurts me most. It's not my person that is hurt but the impeccable image of the club around the world. That kind of behaviour does not reflect what Arsenal is.

"A strong club is a club that makes a decision. It is wrong that in modern society it is not a question of whether a decision is right but whether it is popular. That has nothing to do with competence. People with responsibility have to make the right decision."

Wenger will become the most successful manager in FA Cup history with a seventh title if his Arsenal side beat Chelsea in Saturday's 17:30 BST kick-off.

But the Gunners missed out on Champions League qualification for the first time in 20 years by finishing fifth in the Premier League,

Wenger's contract expires this summer, with his future set to be decided at a board meeting on Monday.

He has previously admitted that Arsenal's season was affected by the uncertainty around his position, as well as the protests calling for him to leave.

Analysis

Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown on Football Focus

Wenger seems very defiant. He doesn't sound like a man who is about to go. He is calling out the board, asking them to not go with the popular decision - because the fans are against him.

In that interview, he is a different Arsene Wenger. It is his life! He doesn't want to let go of Arsenal Football Club. He said "retired people die!" That's how serious he is about it.

His life is dependent on staying in management. I cannot believe that after all he has achieved over the last 12 years that the fans are against him. "

I suppose fans have gone overboard at times but I understand their frustrations

At the same time we must not forget Wengers achievements

British footy fans have a knack for stabbing the one person in the back who fed them, in the same way Chelsea fans turned on Jose despite all he achieved for them. Really sad to see.

He should leave after this season and then when Arsenal becomes a mid tier club like Everton people will realise what all he did for the club..

Some fans on Arsenal fan tv have gone personal with there comments which isn't acceptable. But criticism of his tactics and transfer policies are fair.

What do you think of the Wenger Out movement, banners, chants/songs etc during games and after them

People are free to protest but it should never be during the game. After or before the game protest as much as you want.

Clubs don't allow fans to have a say in the club at all, so protesting is fans best chance of saying what they feel.

Also none of the protest should be disrespectful or resort to personal insults.

Watching that clip in the BBC video of fans abusing Wenger while he stood there in the dug out made me feel sorry for him, but the fans are also beyond that point where they are PC about their feelings

There fustration is understandable, but you don't see Wenger resorting to personal insults despite the abuse he has received.

I am a Liverpool fan, but I have lots of respect for Sir Alex & Wenger - both proper football managers. Wenger is doing perfectly - he is paid by his Yank & Russian boss, not by the fans.

Without the fans no one gets paid though.

For example, do you even know how much a season ticket cost for Arsenal compared to Leicester FC? Arsenal fans are generally the most exploited among all football clubs given their loyal support and they have every right to be angry when their expectations are not being met, it was only a matter of time before those top 4 finishes were not going to be enough and this season they couldn't even achieve that, but hey the FA Cup win will cover all the cracks and long live Wenger; hopefully he manages Arsenal even after death

I know the ticket price at least - there are several article in football magazines. Emeritus is based in north London, probably the richest place on earth, after lower Manhattan - and the sell lots of corporate boxes at premium price. Also, facilities in Emeritus must be like 5 star hotel compared to King Power. Besides, what else do you expect from a Yank in a soccer club? Usmanov is trying to buyout Kroenke, but he won't sell it ever as long as money is coming. Kroenke & his wife (Walton's daughter), doesn't need one time cash - they are happy with the profit from their running "asset".

Majority of Arsenal fans come from working class communities in inner cities not all of them are wealthy and even the lower strands below the VIP treatment their tickets are overly priced. But you do raise an interesting point which rings a bell I think the best way for Arsenal fans to protest is to hit their club where it hurts, in their pocket; but they are just too loyal

But what if they start winning titles :akhtar

lol that's gonna be extremely difficult seeing how rich the other clubs are.. Also depends who the replacement for wenger is whoever it is needs to improve on wengers style of free flowing football a great manager/tacticians won't do any good at a club like arsenal they need someone like pep guardiola..

Congrats Arsenal fans on the FA Cup win ! just disappointed personally because a very prestigious record was broken by Wenger today :mv

Congratulations to Arsenal.

Yes the critcism against Wenger has been over board. Sure ask for his head but dont demand a chainsaw to do it.

Arsene has done a lot of great things for the club he should go now on a high. I dont feel he can take us back to being real title contenders again. Id rather he go now but i feel he will feel like he has what it takes for one more go and will re-sign for 2 more years.
