Adelaide day game is different from Adelaide pink ball test. This will suit England more battingwise. But they still cannot be reckless as they can implode even on a flat wicket.

Why so many days gap in between tests? This has to be the worst Ashes series so far with injuries and gaps between games. One has completely forgot that Ashes is still ongoing...LOL

Brook may change tack for England in Adelaide Ashes Test

Harry Brook may opt for a more cautious approach in the third Ashes Test as he tries to help England stay alive in the series.

England vice-captain Harry Brook has admitted he needs to change his ways when at the crease against Australia during the ongoing Ashes series Down Under.

Brook has struggled to find his best form through the opening two Ashes Tests against the Aussies, with the attacking right-hander having contributed just 98 runs at an average of 24.50 from four innings in the crucial ICC World Test Championship series.

With England needing a victory in Adelaide to have any chance of overturning their 2-0 series deficit and re-claiming the Ashes from their arch-rival, Brook says he may utilise a different approach when batting throughout the remainder of the five-game series.

"Sometimes we've got to rein it in a little bit," Brook said in Adelaide on Monday.

"Learn when to absorb the pressure a little bit more and then realise when the opportunity arises to put pressure back on them.

"I feel like I probably haven't done that as well as I usually do in this series so far.

"There's no reason behind that, I just haven't identified those situations well enough."

While Brook suggested he may change his tact somewhat against Australia's bevy of quality quicks, the England No.5 said he would continue to play the role of aggressor should the Aussies recall veteran spinner Nathan Lyon for the Adelaide contest.

Lyon was dropped for the second Test in Brisbane as Australia opted for an all-out pace attack for the day-night contest, but is expected to regain his place in the hosts' XI for the series-defining match.

“He’s an extremely highly skilled bowler, he’s persistent and he takes a lot of load off their fast bowlers,” Brook said of Lyon.

“We’ll obviously try to be aggressive against him and try to put him under pressure.

“But that may not be trying to hit sixes and fours all the time. We might have to rotate strike as much as possible, but just stay in the moment as much as possible, read the situations, read the pitch and play it accordingly.

“They’ve been incredibly highly skilled and they’ve nailed their execution. You can’t take this bowling attack lightly, they very rarely miss. You’ve got to try and create your own bad ball. That might be me running down, might be me changing my guard or whatever.”

No.1 ranked Test batter Joe Root is the only England player that can boast a batting average greater than 30 across the opening two Tests against Australia, with fellow top-order performers Zak Crawley, Ollie Pope, Ben Duckett and Brook yet to make much of an impact with the willow.

England skipper Ben Stokes recently suggested his side's dressing room was not a place for 'weak men' and urged his teammates to stand up and Brook echoed his captain's sentiments.

“It’s the pressure situations we haven’t been good at so far,” he said.

“When we’re head-to-head, they’ve managed to be the better side and sneak in front. Everyone realises that, and we’ve just got to stand up in certain situations.”

Aussies make Khawaja call among two huge changes for Adelaide

Travis Head remains at the top of the order as Australia recalled two frontline bowlers

Pat Cummins insists Usman Khawaja's international career is not over despite the soon-to-be 39-year-old being overlooked for a recall in the third Ashes Test in Adelaide.

Cummins and Nathan Lyon will both return for Australia's tilt at clinching the urn at Adelaide Oval this week but there was no room for Khawaja, with selectors instead sticking with Travis Head and Jake Weatherald as their opening pair.

Australia XI: Travis Head, Jake Weatherald, Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith, Cameron Green, Alex Carey (wk), Josh Inglis, Pat Cummins (c), Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, Scott Boland

England XI: Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes (c), Jamie Smith (wk), Will Jacks, Brydon Carse, Jofra Archer, Josh Tongue

Michael Neser is the unluckiest of Australia's two omissions from their eight-wicket win at the Gabba, with fellow seamer Brendan Doggett also making way. Josh Inglis retained his place at No.7. Australia have long rated the wicketkeeper's skills as a specialist batter, particularly after he scored a century on debut in Sri Lanka earlier this year.

Cummins revealed the XI on Tuesday's match eve with the paceman taking back the captaincy reins from Steve Smith in what will be his first competitive match in five months. The 32-year-old is fit again after a bone stress injury sidelined him to begin the summer.

Khawaja turns 39 on Thursday and his career now hangs by a thread.

But Cummins did not shut the door on Khawaja returning at some stage.

"I think the selectors have been quite adamant we're picking a side each week. It doesn't necessarily mean it's got to be exactly the same team as the previous week. We do that with the bowlers," said the skipper.

"One of Uzzie's great strengths is he scores runs at the top. He's scored runs in the middle. If we didn't think he'd be good enough to come straight in, then he wouldn't be here in the squad.

"So absolutely I can see a path back at some point if needed."

The successful Head-Weatherald opening union, a surprise success across Australia's last three innings in this series after Khawaja's back spasms forced the pair together in Perth last month, could now be a long-term partnership at the top.

Cummins was however non-committal on that prospect.

"At the moment it feels like it makes sense for now," Cummins told reporters.

"That might change. In the past, (Head) has done bits and bobs on different tours where it felt like (opening) made sense.

"He'll do it this week. Each game you have a look at what you think the next week needs, but it feels like with the current line-up, we've got plenty of flexibility in the squad.

"The big thing that shifted on us is probably Trav opening after that first test, and how good that's looked with 'Weathers'.

"We were pretty happy that that batting line up, and it didn't feel like (there was) a need to change the middle order."

Smith meanwhile is good to go after missing Australia's main training session on Monday with a mild illness. He was back in the nets on Tuesday, soldiering on a pre-game hit despite copping a knock to the groin by a 'flinger' while batting.

Australia played an all-seam attack in the second Test but have recalled their frontline spinner Lyon, creating a squeeze for bowling spots.

Neser took a second-innings five-for at the Gabba but there was no room for him with Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Scott Boland forming the pace brigade.

Doggett will also count himself unlucky given he has taken seven wickets in his first two Tests to help Australia win.

"It's not only Uzzie, there's Beau Webster who's missed out these three Tests," said Cummins.

"'Ness' is coming off a five-for, 'Doggy' playing the first two Tests and doing really well.

"So there's a disappointed group of players, but they've all been fantastic around the group.

"They're buying in. We know we need a squad to win an Ashes series, and they've all been brilliant."

Khawaja hasn't made the cut for this match, means curtains for Usman in international cricket.

Head will continue to open in test cricket as well.

Fond memories of 2023 has Stokes plotting Ashes turnaround

Ben Stokes is confident his side can return to winning ways when the Ashes series with Australia resumes in Adelaide.

Defiant captain Ben Stokes has recalled England's turnaround in form during the most recent Ashes at home in 2023 as he attempts to help his side overcome a 2-0 deficit in their ongoing series against Australia.

England enter the third Ashes Test in Adelaide that commences on Wednesday needing to win the remaining three matches against a buoyant Australia outfit to have any chance of regaining the famous urn.

While their hopes look forlorn based on current output so far Down Under, Stokes believes the situation remains clear for his side with three games still to be played.

He recalled memories of their turnaround on home soil in 2023 when they faced a similar 2-0 deficit and won matches in Leeds and The Oval to leave the series tied at 2-2.

“We’re able to draw on experience being in this position before,” Stokes said.

“We know what it’s like to be in this situation. We knew we had to come here and win this number of games anyway, so that hasn’t changed from before we started.

“Everyone knows what needs to happen in the coming weeks and the games after, so if anything, it actually makes things a little bit simpler and clearer for us.

“I’ve got full backing that we can do this.”

If England are to work their way back into the series, they are going to need a lift in output from every member of their squad and especially their top six batters, who have collectively struggled to find much fluidity through the opening two matches of the series.

No.1 ranked Test batter Joe Root is the only member of the touring party to have scored a century so far this series, while Zak Crawley, Harry Brook and Stokes himself have mustered a half-century each from four innings across the two contests.

But Stokes is adamant his batters will find their groove in Adelaide, pointing to their record over a long period of time that have helped the side prosper under his leadership.

“We backed a group over a long period of time to not only enjoy this game when it’s all going well, but these are the times when the players that you’ve backed, you trust them to go out there and deliver in moments like these," Stokes added.

“Those are the guys that hopefully this week stand up for the team and the country as well.

“I would never put it like that ‘you owe me, you owe us’. Just go out and do what needs to be done and back yourself to do it.”

Playing XI: Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes (c), Jamie Smith (wk), Will Jacks, Brydon Carse, Jofra Archer, Josh Tongue
