Asim declared on oath his wife has no ‘business capital outside Pakistan’
The growth of the Bajwa family’s business empire in the United States and later in Pakistan directly matches the rise in power of retired general Asim Saleem Bajwa, who is now chairman of the country’s massive China-financed infrastructure project and a special assistant to the prime minister.

Asim Bajwa’s younger brothers opened their first Papa John’s pizza restaurant in 2002, the year he went to work for General Pervez Musharraf as a lieutenant colonel on the military dictator’s staff.

Nadeem Bajwa, 53, who started as a delivery driver for the pizza restaurant franchise, his brothers and Asim Bajwa’s wife and sons now own a business empire which set up 99 companies in four countries, including a pizza franchise with 133 restaurants worth an estimated $39.9 million. Out of total 99 companies, 66 are main companies, 33 companies are branch companies of some of the main companies while five companies are dead now.

The Bajwa family’s companies spent an estimated $52.2 million to develop their businesses and $14.5 million to purchase properties in the United States, while Asim Bajwa and his department were encouraging Pakistanis to invest within their relatively undeveloped country. The businesses of the Bajwa family through different companies were named as Bajco Group.

Asim Bajwa’s sons joined the Bajco Group companies in 2015 and also started establishing new companies independent of the Bajco Group in Pakistan and in the United States after he became director general of ISPR and commander of the Southern Command.

Asim’s wife was a shareholder in all the foreign businesses from the very beginning. At present, Asim’s wife, Farrukh Zeba, is associated with or is a shareholder in 85 companies including 82 foreign companies (71 in United States, seven in UAE and four in Canada). The records of US state governments and other records related to companies show that some of these American companies (all jointly owned by Asim’s wife Farrukh Zeba) also have investments in real estate sector and own some thirteen commercial properties in the United States including two shopping centers. Estimated current net worth of businesses and properties of these companies jointly owned by Farrukh Zeba stands at $52.7 million.

In his declaration of assets and liabilities signed in June as special assistant to Prime Minister Imran Khan, Asim Bajwa declared an investment of $18,468 (rupees 3.1 million) in his wife’s name. Asim declared that he and his wife have no “Immovable Property Held outside Pakistan”. Asim also categorically declared that neither he nor his wife have any “Business Capital outside Pakistan”. If in his declaration, Asim wanted to declare his wife’s investments in United States by writing Rs3.1 million in the column of “Investments”, he could never have written word “NIL” in the specific column “Business Capital Outside Pakistan”. Asim Bajwa, 57, is also now the chairman of China-Pakistan Economic Corridor.

Family Background:

The six Bajwa brothers and their three sisters came from a middle-class family in a small town in Southern Punjab that was struck by tragedy while they were still young.

Their father, Muhammad Saleem Bajwa, a medical doctor, started as a government employee in early 1950s and then in 1960 joined Millat Hospital, a small private hospital in Sadikabad. Bajwa was shot to death on Nov. 25, 1976 while traveling on a Karachi express train.

His family’s assets at the time of his death included a few acres of agricultural land, a house in Sadiqabad, shares in a pharmaceutical company, and some shops in the city. Their father’s brother had to help them pay for family expenses.

The two eldest sons, Tanvir and Taloot went on to become doctors like their father and practiced in different cities of Punjab. The third son, Asim joined the army in 1984. Two brothers Nadeem and Faisal came to the United States in the early 1990s after completing their education from Punjab University in Lahore. The youngest brother, Abdul Malik, 49, went to the U.S. in 2002.

Management of worldwide businesses through a parent company:

In 2007, a few months after Asim Bajwa’s promotion to brigade rank by the military dictator, the Bajco companies were brought under the umbrella of one parent company, Bajco Global Management LLC, which was registered in the United States and Pakistan (liaison office). The official documents of this parent company show that Asim Bajwa’s wife, Farrukh Zeba, is an equal shareholder in the businesses of Bajco Group along with his five brothers. Farrukh Zeba is a housewife with no known business experience.

Asim declined to respond to Fact Focus when asked through different WhatsApp messages and a Twitter post if there are any bank accounts maintained in the name of his wife in the United States, and why he declared that he and his wife have no business capital outside Pakistan.

The changing websites

The Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan, the organization which regulates companies in Pakistan, started deleting data of companies owned by the sons of Asim Bajwa from its official website after Fact Focus started this investigation. Fact Focus has maintained dated digital footprints of the record tempering by SECP.

In first week of August, Bajco Group website bajco.net went offline and later came online with a new interface and data. In the previous version of the website, the Bajco Group showed only 58 franchises of Papa John’s pizza restaurants in the U.S. and Canada and was not showing its investments in real estate. After questions about the assets were raised on social media and from Fact Focus, the Bajco Group started updating the website and partially revealed its real estate holdings publicly for the first time. Fact Focus is releasing complete details of all real estate properties acquired so far by the Bajco Group.

Year-wise detail of setting up of Franchises along with estimated investment
Click here to check other details of franchises in United states like addresses etc.

However, the updated website had not acknowledged the investments of Bajco Group and its associated enterprises in Pakistan until Aug. 25. These enterprises include investments in the human resource and telecom sectors of Pakistan. The website was being changed often in subsequent days. A complete track of the website, the digital footprint, was saved by Fact Focus. Also the old website still accessible via the internet archive Web Archive. Now the Bajco, according to the company’s new website, “has grown to become the largest privately held franchisee of Papa John’s International.”

Social Media responses by the Bajwa family:

Abdul Malik Bajwa, the president of the Bajco Group and brother of Asim Bajwa, stated on his Twitter account (@MalikBajwa) that neither Asim Bajwa nor the general’s sons are involved in Bajco.

Contrary to the claims, official documents obtained by Fact Focus from the government of UAE confirmed that a son of Asim has an association with Bajco Group Companies in the UAE (Document are annexed in the companies database given below). Furthermore, Bajwa’s wife is an equal shareholder with his five brothers in the parent company Bajco Global Management and co-owns 84 foreign companies in the United States, UAE, and Canada. The names of other Bajwa brothers are Tanvir, Taloot, Faisal, Nadeem and Abdul Malik. So both the claims made by Bajco Group president were not factual.

‘Indian attack on CPEC and role of RAW’

After questions were raised about Bajwa’s family business empire, a campaign on print and social media was launched to connect those asking questions with India’s foreign intelligence agency, the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW). Questions about properties of the former general’s family in the U.S. were termed as an attack on the CPEC project and a conspiracy by India, allegations with no basis in fact. Asim’s son specifically tweeted blogs and pictures portraying author of this story as working for Indian agency RAW and becoming part of India’s attack on CPEC.

why should i believe him ? whos he ? JIT ? Judge ? NAB ?

The same website is going gaga over Musharraf buying flats in london and dubai after retirement, quoting prices and figures and calling it corruption without mentioning even once how he was rolling in $200,000 for speeches around the world on a weekly basis at the time, clearly a PPP biased nonsense website.

First time hearing about this site, but it would be something quite harrowing if true.

It should not be an issue as long as Asim Bajwa has not misused his powers as the chief of the army to grow his family's private business. Is there any evidence that he has done that? I presume there is no law in Pakistan that says that the family members of military staff are not allowed to run their private businesses.

Asim Bajwa was never Chief of the Army. You are thinking of Qamar Bajwa.

Asim Bajwa is the head of CPEC, not the COAS. Recently he declared having no immovable property held outside Pakistan, which the articles supposedly debunks.

Why do I get the feeling that people are desperate to stop CPEC at any cost. I wonder who needs to slow down the work of CPEC?

This story is nothing but a lame attempt by PPP guys trying to divert attention from the destruction of Karachi under PPP watch

Theres nothing in Ahmed Noorni's hyped up story except one thing:
Lt Gen (r) Bajwa did not declare his wife's shares on his SAPM declaration.
This is the same case as Justice Faiz Esa, nothing more nothing less.
Now if youve been defending Justice Esa, sit this one out.
— Waqas (@worqas) August 28, 2020

Funny how this PPP shill OP is quick to post any fake news of corruption by IK or army personal but when it comes to Zardari and Bhutto clan he stops barking.

This guy lost whatever credibility he had with the Land Cruiser fiasco. He will get away with this as well because of his uniform. No surprises here.

Funny how a women who has had no business experience ends up opening many businesses. That itself is a red mark

What trash is this? I'm truly appalled at the state of these blind PPP & PML - N supporters...It's truly sickening.

The Indians are desperate to stop the work of CPEC, they see Bajwa as someone doing a good job. If Bajwa was like NS, they would be praising him on every forum.

Fake News

There's need to be a Pakistani fact checking website, this a smear campaign engineered from Pakistan's geopolitical foes.

30 lakh ke.
Btw its a common secret in pakistan that these army people get non custom paid cars at very cheap prices. But i doubt our overseas brethen would even know or care....

Theres the problem we have in Pakistan

Anyone inside or outside pakistan who has a family member in the armed forces cant be succesful in life, business or there career because if and when they do, the smear campaign is ready by the pmln/ppp to put them down and blame it on corruption. This is what the army has to suffer with, there soliders go to war and there family members lives become a living hell due to politics.

Not surprised the two posters on PP who have the greatest love for India are the ones rejoicing at this news and celebrating it even though it has already been rebutted and proved to originate from some Indian propagandist.

NOT!

Looks like another PML-N/PPP fiasco in the making.

To these people and their followers ever learn?

Can anyone explain where we can buy a top of the line, 2016 Land Cruiser for 30 lakh rupees like Mr. Bajwa?

The land cruiser scandal and the contents of this article should surprise nobody. It's common knowledge that the Pakistan Army is a money making machine. I'm sure the usual suspects will be out to defend Bajwa. Looking forward to their replies.

Privilege sickens me - no matter who gets it.

This entire episode has been debunked but hopefully the courts and relevant authorities investigate the matters and put facts in place and if needed, Bajwa sb. needs to clear his name and provide money trails. If not, then he needs to be treated exactly like any other criminal or wrongdoer.

Are you out of your mind? Courts do not have the clearance to investigate any wrongdoings of the Pakistan military!

Forget Indians losing sleep. If your lot take Gaurav Arya seriously then you are insomniacs of the highest order.

The man is an nobody - just a former Army officer working for Indian right wing media. He makes a statement on Balochistan and gets his effigies burned all over Pakistan? What's up with you, one must ask?

I'm sure that behind all the vitriol spewing, Gaurav Arya must be secretly thanking Pakistan for having made him a social media and online celebrity.

I am all for open govt but this whole episode is just so obvious that, I as a layman can see what's going on. And look at the thread starter, a guy that can't even bring himself to say a single word about the trillions the PPP has stolen and the lives they have destroyed in PK. If that is not a badniyaat person then what is.

When was his effigy burned all over Pakistan? :))

In this case, Gaurav Arya is being referenced because a lot of the claims in this article were originally made by him in a video a while back. It looks like the writer got a lot of the information from that and dug a little deeper.

Same way Biloo Rani can declare prime sea front property in Clifton Karachi to be worth a few lakh ruppees. You didn’t seem to have a problem with that.

you really dont know the pakistani election laws.

the law states that when declaring assets for election, you have to mention the price at which it was bought for and not the present day price.

I think i have told you this 10 times, but yet seem to be ignorant.

MULTAN: Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi says the authenticity of a news report on alleged offshore properties and businesses of China-Pakistan Economic Corridor Authority Chairman Lt-Gen retired Asim Saleem Bajwa and his family will be clear soon.

“It is now a common practice that the news is run without confirmation. A news should be made public once it is confirmed. The truth in this case will come to the fore soon,” he said in response to questions put by some journalists here on Friday.

Answering another question, Mr Qureshi said the government was not worried about the announcement of a multi-party conference by the opposition.

He said former prime minister Nawaz Sharif was allowed to leave the country for treatment on humanitarian grounds after consultation with Prime Minister Imran Khan. “However, he (Nawaz) is not sharing his medical reports with the government as per the condition. Rather, he is doing politics while sitting there. Shahbaz Sharif is also violating the affidavit he had submitted. Ethically, Nawaz Sharif should return to the country and face cases against him if he is in good health,” he said.

So, hold on for a second, are we implying that being a Pakistani means that you can't have any property/business outside your country? Right? Cuz that's what we've learned from Panama case? Just like Aleema Khan owns properties outside Pakistan and is, hence, a corrupt lady. Right?

I thought you could spend your INCOME freely as a Pakistani. Guess I was wrong.

Corruption in Pakistan happens like this

Govt officials are checked all the time. Thus, what many govt officials do in Pakistan is that they either use their brothers/sisters, their wife or have a very trust worthy friend under whose name the property gets bought or business is started

This way the govt doesnt find out.

Patwaris do this alot in Pakistan as there are some rules regards to them owning land. They can't own land or something like that so they keep a friend who buys the land when they tell them to. The land is owned by the patwari but on paper its owned by the friend.

Here the businesses are owned by a lady who had no prior experience yet has shares.

The agenda is if you have anyone in your family or distant in the army and become successfull in anyfield, you are automatically part of the establishment and it was the army that made you successful and not yourself.

2420 carores is the amount bajwas wife made just by staying home

See this is what i talk about. Selective investigation. Justice isa's wife has to prove herself by going to court because she is a bloody civilian

Bajwa and his wife dont have to face the court or care. In there case its alright to open businesses.

First off all watch you tongue. You are one to talk you didn't even have the morality to condemn PPP atrocities in Karachi on an online forum posting anonymously. Nearly 50 people died from rain related incidents and all you could do was hide.

As for General Bajwa's wife:

People who are brushing this under the carpet shows because the khakis allow imran to be pm even their fans cant say anything

Isa is the judge that gave the Hudbiya decision, his wife buys property in London. Your lies on Bajwa show your desperation.

FIA and others will be taking action against the author now.

Its funny, how Justice Isa's wifes personal statements got into Imran and other officials hands but no action or investigation to happen there.

Rich coming from you. What political party do you support?

You can’t debate with corrupt people.
Best to just ignore them because,
1. They have too much to lose
2. They won’t answer your questions and then pop up elsewhere with some other hogwash.

in other parts of the world, it is not the govt that takes action against investigative journalist, it is the mafia or the gangs themselves.

When the cali cartel were being investigated by a journalist in the US, one of their own members shot the poor guy.

He is not an investigative journalist, he copied Indian propaganda and claimed it as his own. Its these traitors that need to be dealt with. This is what they call 5th generation warfare.

2420 carores is the amount bajwas wife made just by staying home

Court cases are not made based on allegations from twitter, otherwise there will be 1000 cases a day on every MNA, another 1000 on all judges and another 1000 on all generals, and then the next day there will be another set.

No country runs based on investigations done by fools on twitter, especially when the source comes from india, and even worse when its an indian army gen, accusing your army gen of nonsense,

when 2 countries are on a battlefield, and the other sides captain makes baseless allegations on yours, would you leave your army and joins theres, it seems like thats what you have already done.

It's common trait of left 'liberals' like Major Sahab to worship everything Indian.

Here is a person whose views closely matches with OP Sahab. Mind you close to 50 people died in the rains and millions saw their lives turned upside down.

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Bar Council (PBC), Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) and Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) in a joint statement “strongly condemned” death threats hurled at senior journalist Ahmad Noorani for writing an investigative piece about the business fortunes of close relatives of a retired army officer and prime minister’s aide.

The statement, issued by PBC vice chairman Abid Saqi, HRCP chairperson Dr Mehdi Hasan and secretary general Harris Khalique, PFUJ president Shahzada Zulfikar and secretary general Nasir Zaidi, “denounced this well-orchestrated campaign” against the journalist, declaring him anti-state and agent of the enemy.

The statement maintains that if anyone has any complaint against Mr Noorani’s story, they should approach courts. “The bar, press, and civil society leaderships urge the government to provide protection to Mr Noorani and investigate elements behind these threats to the journalist.”

They reminded the government that Mr Noorani had been brutally attacked a few years ago and the culprits got off scot-free.

Shibli says Asim Bajwa will soon speak about assets

Expressing full support for Mr Noorani, the statement calls upon all human rights organisations and civil society to take note of the situation where voices of dissent are being curbed through brute force and even abduction of journalists.

“Freedom of expression is under more threat under this government than it was during the martial law regimes. We stand for freedom of expression and speech, and would resist any attempt to impose any curbs on them,” the statement concluded.

Assets of PM’s aide, family
In a separate statement, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) secretary general and former senator Farhatullah Babar on Monday demanded a thorough probe into the investigative news report published on a website about alleged offshore properties and businesses of Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) on Infor*mation retired Lt Gen Asim Saleem Bajwa and his close family members.

Mr Babar said there was a need to carry out investigations to ascertain how the alleged businesses of Mr Bajwa’s family members multiplied in other countries in proportion to his rise along the official ladder in Pakistan. “The official documents quoted in the report apparently lend credence to it,” he said, adding that this had raised serious questions about the fidelity of solemn declarations made by the SAPM last month.

NAB’s silence
The PPP leader said that the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), the anti-graft watchdog that always claimed to have looked at the nature of cases and not the faces of individuals, was totally silent in this matter. “Too much is at stake to turn a blind eye,” he added.

“Restoring credibility demands that the report is appropriately responded to in a transparent, effective and convincing manner,” he said, adding that “silence or closing eyes is no an option”.

He said: “Discrimination, selective application of the law, some more equal than others has weakened the fabric of state and society which must come to an end.”

Following the report’s publication, retired Lt Gen Asim Saleem Bajwa, who is also chairman of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) Authority, denied the allegations on Twitter. He said: “A malicious propaganda story published on an unknown site, against me and my family, is strongly rebutted.”

Talking to reporters in his hometown Multan last week, Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi had claimed that the authenticity of the news report on the alleged offshore properties and businesses of Asim Saleem Bajwa and his family would be clear soon.

“It is now a common practice that the news is run without confirmation. A news should be made public once it is confirmed. The truth in this case will come to the fore soon,” the minister had stated.

Speaking at a protest demonstration organised by the Defence of Human Rights and civil society organisations outside the National Press Club on Monday evening to observe the International Day of the Disappeared, PPP leader Farhatullah Babar said enforced disappearance was a crime against humanity under the international law and warned that one day the world might wake up and take notice of the impunity with which people continue to disappear in the country without a trace.

Meanwhile, federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Shibli Faraz through a tweet stated that Mr Bajwa would talk about the news report regarding his assets in the next few days.

He is supposed to be an administrative, financial genius

No one from any of our business schools is qualified enough to do his job truly an angelic being sent from heaven to serve Pakistanis

Oh if you criticize him they'll send guys to kidnap and torture you or even kill you since you're a traitor for criticizing this pious man :inti

There has been social media and electronic media bashing against him for a week based on fake news. How many of the critics were picked up?

Now foreign born confused people who never been to Pakistan for more than a month during summer vacations are experts on Pakistan?

As for his credentials, his job description is to cut through the red tape and be a bridge across all the ministries. He is not a business manager but a strong administrator. Since he took charge of CPEC authority a whole multitude of new projects have been pushed through that were previously stuck in bureaucracy. Such as ML-1, Kohala, Azad Pattan and Mahl HPPs, Daimer Basha dam, Western Route of CPEC with multiple motorways, Thar coal projects etc etc.

So please first educate yourself then speak.

Not surprised that Indians and internal enemies of Pakistan have an issue of Asim Bajwa because of how CPEC had greatly accelerated since he took charge.

Where did the information emanate from, and why?

When leftist liberals and Indians join hands to malign a Pakistani, you know that he/she is doing something right for the country.

These sort of campaigns are an indicator of his stellar performance so far.

100%... Only makes me more confident that CPEC and Pakistan are headed in the right direction.

Similarly leftist liberals and Pakistanis join hands to malign Modi, so you know that he is doing something right for India.

See? This is the same stupid logic that bhakhts give. Opposite sides of the same coin.

I don't think there are many Indian leftist liberals who use Pakistani sources to malign Modi.

And btw, I am not sure if Modi is the right person for India but he is definitely good for Indian Hindus.

i have said this before and will say again its an investigation report, and whether more will come out of it lets see because rumours are “they” are taking ahmad noorani to court. But lets eee how it unfolds.

Why don’t you make threads on investigative reports against PPP ?

We already know Ahmed Noorani’s credibility as a journalist. Why does his facts and figures match with those made earlier by Gaurav Arya ?

It is a fact that Bajwa has accelerated the progress on many CPEC projects which were stalled before him. You would know this if you were following the events on CPEC but instead, you are more interested in OBOR in India.

You probably support PPP due to family reasons but it is your duty as an educated citizen of the country to use your intellect and reason instead of being swayed by emotional rhetoric and agendas.

I have made threads against ppp and posts agains them but people will remember what they want, and i dont support zardari.

I do hope that bilalwal would come out as a leader but till now if he has done nothing of sort in his province.

Im sure noorani knew what he was doing and what he was getting into when he released a report agains the army. No one does hawai firing and that to against army.

Remember cyril almeida, people also downplayed him aswell when those dawn leaks happen.

Lets wait and see what will get unfold or what wont be unfolded

PML-N vice-president Maryam Nawaz on Tuesday said that the process of accountability of one person would not affect the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and asked CPEC Chairman and Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) on Infor*mation retired Lt Gen Asim Saleem Bajwa to face the allegations against him.

Referring to a recently published investigative news report about alleged offshore properties and businesses of Bajwa and his close family members, Maryam said that the answer to questions raised by the report should not be that it was a "conspiracy against CPEC".

She was speaking to reporters after appearing at the Islamabad High Court (IHC) for the hearing of an appeal against her conviction, along with that of her father, Nawaz Sharif, and husband, Muhammad Safdar, in the Avenfield reference.

"If the founder of CPEC [Nawaz Sharif], who brought investment of $60 billion to Pakistan and was removed because of one iqamah and that did not affect the project, then the removal or addition of one person won't affect CPEC.

"It is the matter of an individual. Allegations have been made against him [Bajwa] and he should answer them."

Maryam said that the evidence against Bajwa was "huge" and called for him to clarify his position in front of the nation.

"If you have been appointed to a government post on taxpayers' money and allegations are made against you and evidence is presented, you should face them," she said.

"In our case, it was like making a mountain out of a molehill but still we served punishments thrice. If you have been accused and evidence has been brought, then you should not hesitate to face the law," she added.

"[Imran Khan] used to say that Nawaz has left the country which has weakened his narrative of accountability. Then he used to say that someone has gotten bail [or] someone has been acquitted so his narrative of accountability has weakened.

"I want to question Imran Khan and his government that today, when allegations have been made against Asim Saleem Bajwa with proof, why is his narrative of accountability sleeping? Is there no challenge to his narrative of accountability now?"

The PML-N vice president said that everyone was equal under the law and if she and her father could serve jail time for "false cases", then nobody else could be exempted either.

"If Nawaz Sharif can face the law and serve jail time, if his daughter who is not holding a government post can serve punishments twice, once for six months and the second time for five months and stay in a death cell, if Nawaz Sharif can reach the point of death in jail and surrender to the law then whether it is Nawaz Sharif, Maryam Nawaz, Shehbaz Sharif, Imran Khan, Asim Saleem Bajwa, Mir Sahkilur Rehman, Qazi Faez Isa or Sarina Isa, they are equal in the eyes of the law," she said.

"If Qazi Faez Isa, while being a sitting judge of the Supreme Court, and Nawaz Sharif, a three-time former prime minister, [and] their wives and daughter while not being government employees can face the law then there is no exemption for anyone," she emphasised.

Responding to a question, Maryam said Nawaz would return to the country "the day his condition was out of danger".

She also spoke about the sacking two months ago of Judge Arshad Malik, former judge of an accountability court who had convicted former prime minister Nawaz Sharif in the Al-Azizia reference and acquitted him in the Flagship reference.

"His [Judge Arshad Malik's] [confession]5 was a black mark on justice which [the PTI government] tried to wash away," she said and demanded that the conviction in the reference be overturned.

"After this case, Imran Khan and his government should make preparations for the burial of their accountability narrative," she said.
