Australia (181 & 162/4) defeat India (185 & 157) by 6 wickets in the 5th Test match and win the 5-match series 3-1

Which side will win the 5th Test between Australia and India?

On a fifth-day pitch, any target over 250 would have been challenging. As we saw in Melbourne, India was bowled out for 155 and then started making excuses and blaming the umpire :sree

Most of the umpiring decisions have actually gone against India this series. Aussies always do this when they know they can't win by fairplay. I mean who can forget 2008 series when Steve Bucknor choose to play as 12th man for Australia. Highlighting those is not making excuses or crying.

Also, isn't it ironic that BD fans is asking others not to cry abt umpiring decisions? You guys whined about Rohit Sharma no ball in 2015 wc for years. Not only fans, then ICC chairman Mustafa Kamal resigned from his post protesting about that no ball. Then BD fans also cried about Asia cup 2016 final where boundary was given by 3rd umpire when Mashrafe dived and dragged boundary rope. Cried after the Asia cup 2018 finals in the final over of Kedar Jadhav. Cried about umpires after WT20 2022.There was a time when Ind v BD rivalry had lot of interest and even topped Ind Pak matches not bcoz BD team had improved or anything. But to see what excuse they will give when they lose.

So I find it very ironic that the fans of same team are preaching us now to respect umpire decision.

Gambhir was aksed if Rohit was going to play in the last Test and Gambhir's answer was following:

"We're going to have a look at the wicket and finalise it [the XI] tomorrow."

That was a strange aswer given it was asked about the team's captain. So there is a possibility he wont play?

I'll have respect for Gambhir if he drops the captain. When was the last time that happened ever ?

Think this will be the team. I feel Rohit has already played his last test match but they will not announce it officialy considering he will be capatining us in CT next. The next test series for India is in June...so an announcement will probably come later.

This has been the fairest Border-Gavaskar Trophy so far, with top-notch umpiring. Comparing it to the 2008 series is a poor statement.

Far from being fair. Starting from first test when KL Rahul was given out on DRS till Jaiswal's howler in 4th game, there has been many blunders. The 2012, 2014, 2018 and 2021 were pretty fair. After 2008 tour, the current series has been most controversy ridden due to poor umpiring decision.

Also, you didn't respond about the other part of my post regarding pot calling kettle black :shakib

Match is starting on 3rd January but thread started 2 day before match day.

@The Bald Eagle bhut jaldi Main ho india ki har dekhne ke liye

Pant dropped.

He's one of the few players in form. I wouldn't have dropped him. I'd put him in solitary confinement for a day and make him think about his mistakes, then release him just before the SCG test.

Source and if he dropped from the team mean he was one the under performing player and in the MCG test he threw aways his wicket in Both innings.

No one is above team india.

Dropped such a player's atleast for a year.

Bumrah is not a long term captaincy option as he will not play all games. His job is to bowl well and get wickets. No point burdening a premier fast bowler with captaincy.

Gill and Pant can't be captain yet as both are struggling to make it permanent into playing XI.

I know people will hate me for saying this but Kohli is the best option to lead this team. He was a brilliant test captain before Ganguly unceremoniusly screwed him. It kind of started the downfall of Indian test cricket. So give it back to him, ask him to lead the side for couple of years and he can also groom someone like Pant or fellow punjabi Gill under him. Giving him captaincy may also increased his batting performance. Remember Kohli is someone who loves challenges...so this additional responsibility can only motivate him to do well.

Worth the wait as Webster fills all-round role

Beau Webster has earned a place in the Test side on the back of an incredible Sheffield Shield run, where he scored 938 runs and took 30 wickets last summer.

Unlike last week's teenage debutant Sam Konstas, Australia's newest Baggy Green Cap recipient Beau Webster is anything but a new kid on the block.

The 31-year-old, who Australia's skipper Pat Cummins confirmed will take the place of fellow allrounder Mitchell Marsh in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy Series decider against India starting at the SCG on Friday, has more than a decade's first-class experience.

Indeed, the towering Tasmanian graduated to Sheffield Shield ranks in 2014, a season prior to new Test teammate Marnus Labuschagne and a full decade before 19-year-old Konstas debuted at senior level.

But it's only in the past four years that Webster has established himself as a mainstay in Tasmania's Shield line-up, largely due to his evolution from top-order batter who also sent down handy off-spin to hard-hitting middle-order aggressor whose auxiliary skills set is seam bowling.

It's that game-changing batting prowess that has earned Webster Baggy Green Cap number 469 in place of Marsh, whose 73 runs at 10.42 across four Tests of the current NRMA Insurance Series saw him omitted.

In the four years since Webster dropped down the Tasmania batting order and added pace to his bowling repertoire, he has averaged almost 50 with seven centuries and a strike rate around 60.

As Cummins explained today, it's as much the manner in which the reigning Sheffield Shield Player of the Year scores his runs as the total output that has earned him a Test berth at the expense of the incumbent Allan Border Medallist.

And while Cummins hasn't yet decided on whether Webster might be called upon to deliver some spin in addition to his seamers, he holds no doubt as to how the 198cm right-hander will approach his batting.

"If you're going to bat six you're getting picked for your batting which he (Webster) has shown in Shield over the last couple of years where he takes the game on, and he's really changed some games for Tasmania," Cummins said.

"Mitchy (Marsh) hasn't quite got the runs or perhaps wickets he would have liked this series, so we felt like it was time for a freshen up.

"Short turnaround (since Melbourne Test that ended last Monday) so it's always nice to have a fifth bowler, and he (Webster) bowls quite a lot for Tasmania so if we need to call on that we can.

"I'll sit down and work it out today, but particularly that pace bowling Beau's going to be handy and we've got Nathan (Lyon) but also Trav with some handy offies (off-spin) if they are needed."

Webster's elevation means Australia will field three debutants in the course of a single home summer (along with Konstas and Nathan McSweeney) for the first time since Alex Carey, Michael Neser and Scott Boland received their caps during the 2021-22 Ashes.

Cummins conceded he'd not had much to do with Webster until the Tasmanian was called into the Test squad last month, when Marsh pulled up sore following the series opener in Perth.

That's hardly surprising given that, in more than 10 years of interstate representation, the pair have only been on-field opponents in three one-day cup fixtures and a solitary BBL game (at Hobart seven years ago).

"He (Webster) has been one of those star performers with the bat or ball, or in the field," Cummins said at his pre-game media conference at the SCG today.

"He always seems to have a big impact, quite aggressive, can change the game like we've seen Mitch Marsh or Trav Head or Alex Carey do in that middle-order.

"He's been a great personality around the squad, even day five in Melbourne he was itching to get on the field (as substitute fielder).

"It's going to be awesome to see him debut, really love what he's brought to the squad so far."

The excitement of what Webster – who plundered 938 Shield runs and snared 30 wickets last summer, the most productive all-round season since former West Indies legend Sir Garfield Sobers in 1963-64 – will bring was not confined to Cummins.

Amid the disappointment of learning he had missed Test selection for the first time since being recalled to the Australia line-up during the 2023 Ashes in the UK following almost four years on the outer, Marsh's thoughts turned immediately to his replacement.

Marsh was present at the SCG nets for Australia's optional session this morning, but took no active part while Webster spent some time batting.

Marsh offered his understudy a pat on the back when their paths briefly crossed, and then stopped to sign autographs for fans who had gathered at the ground on Test eve.

"He's really excited for Beau," Cummins said of his close friend Marsh.

"The first thing he said was he can't wait to see Beau go out there and give it a crack.

"He's totally understanding, I think his words were 'not necessarily blindsided'.

"He knows he hasn't scored the runs or the wickets he would have liked, and that makes you vulnerable."

Cummins also pointed out that Marsh's omission does not spell the end of the allrounder's 46-Test career that began in 2014, the same year as Webster's Shield debut.

Marsh remains Australia's T20 captain even though he did not take part in this summer's three-match series against Pakistan, with Josh Inglis filling that role while Test players were involved in preparation for the India assignment.

And while his bowling workloads have been light during recent Test matches, the Australia brainstrust has pointed out that is more of a result of reduced need given the effectiveness of front-line bowlers rather than any inability to shoulder a heavier burden.

Since returning to the team in 2023, Marsh has only been called upon to send down 10 or more overs in the course of an innings once, and that occasion was at Perth in the first game of the current series when he bowled 12 in India's second innings.

With Cameron Green is expected to have recovered from back surgery in time for next summer's home Ashes against England, the need for Marsh to maintain higher bowling loads would be further reduced should he rediscover his batting form.

"We've spoken about it a lot," Cummins said today when asked whether Marsh would need to show an ability to bowl longer spells if he's to win back his Test berth.

"He was in the side this summer for being a top six batter, so that's generally a guiding principle when picking the top-order (though) not always.

"When he's at his best he gets into the side on his batting alone, and his bowling's a bonus.

"We've got guys like Cam Green who will be back in the mix at some point as well so that provides another bowling option.

"The way that Ronnie (men's team coach Andrew McDonald) and myself and the selectors look at it, we love pulling a squad of players together who we think we can call on at different times.

"And we thought the time was right for Mitchy (Marsh) to have a freshen up and miss this one.

"But it doesn't mean he won't be back in that team at some point."

It's pathetic that you still want Kohli in the team after the runs he's scored in the last 5 years. This is just hero worship.

Gill and Pant can't be captain yet as both are struggling to make it permanent into playing XI.
Kohli can't fix his spin issues and off stump issues even after 5 years of slump.he will become one more unfit captain aka rohit down the lane .whatever happens an young captain should be there to guide the team. Am not sure with bumrah option as he cant play every game and he is a diamond. We can't treat him like an iron club.

Since 2000, only England has defeated Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground. India has drawn four Tests here.

Parchi Marsh finally dropped. Can't believe we made a hero out of this mediocre cricketer by dropping his catch. We always make it a point to elevate useless players.
He will be backed. He atleast takes some very good catches. Shares a few overs. They need him in the absence of Green otherwise workload will become unmanageable. They can't hope Head to cover the absence in every match.

Seems like it is more or less true Rohit is out. ONe more to go. But as expected Rohit bots are trending RIP GAUTAM GAMBHIR. sick guys.

These Rohit fans are targeting Gambhir's family as well.

Rohit ,Virat and Dhoni fan base are worst things happen to indian cricket .

Their mentality is very sick and they can go to any length to defend own superstars .for God they even didn't spare players wife's and little kids.

Shame on them .i really hate this. I'm one the biggest Kohli supporter but for me Indian cricket is above any individuals.

:kp

First time in history a captain is dropped from the playing xi
No its already happened in 70s and 80s with multiple captain. Front foot journalist already name those captain but i forget Their names .one was indian and other was from England.

:kp

Big call. This can destroy harmony too. In my opinion after giving Sharma backing they should give him the final test.

This is just Indian fan base not specific to individual cricketers. Some of the things I have seen Indian fans say to opposition players family made me sick.

True Indian cricket fans don't go to the gutter level. They even mocked Pant with his accident picture during IPL. That is a whole different level compared to International Indian cricket fans.

I bet limping out of form Kohli still has way more brand value than someone like YB Jaiswal.
It is stating the obvious. Kohli's brand value is 237 million. Next best is retired MSD 95 million. Sachin Tendulkar 91 million. Among the active cricketers next best is Rohit 41 million Next is Pandya 30 million

Overall quality of international cricket suffers because of these PR agencies. There is no way guys like Rohit, Kohli would have survived this long in any other era. They are backed even after knowing they are not good enough anymore.

True cricket fans are more than these shameless fan's base. They are nothing compared to real fans

But negative things always spread more than positive.

You said " this is indian fan fase not specific to any individual " i was taking about Rohit, Virat and dhoni fans base rather than Indian cricket team fan's base. Learnt to differentiate.

I am expecting Rohit Sharma to play it like a T20. Anyway playing cautiously is not yielding anything. Just score a quick fire 30 and keep his place in the team for CT.

Are Rohit, Virat and Dhoni fan base that you are talking about fans of Australian team ?

There is no need to differentiate. Indian is Indian.

Is it confirmed?

I doubt BCCI will humiliate the captain by dropping him. India is a star driven team. Big names will get a lot longer rope than more mortals in the team.
More or less confirmed. Gambhir also did not say yes or no to the question if Rohit is playing. Also his lackluster net sessions confirm that. HE is leaving the ball that is hitting the stumps lol

What a downfall for Rohit. Hope he is dropped and retires immediately.

Mitch Marsh issues classy response to debutant as Pat Cummins shakes things up ahead of final Test

Mitch Marsh has been dropped for the final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Series.

The struggling all-rounder has failed to impress in the opening four Tests, making scores of 9, 5, 4, 2 and 0 for a combined tally of 20 runs during the series.

Marsh has notably been suffering with a back issue after the Perth Test, which has also meant he has bowled just 13 overs across the past three tests, failing to pick up a wicket.

Pat Cummins said that selectors had 'felt like it was time for a freshen up' before adding he felt for his team-mate.

'It's a shame for Mitchy, because he knows how much he brings to the team,' the Australia captain said, adding that the all-rounder 'hasn't got the runs and wickets Marsh would have liked.'

'He (was) totally understanding,' Cummins continued.

'He knows he hasn’t scored the runs or wickets that he would have liked, so that makes you vulnerable.'

There is a lot of excitement around Webster's call-up following his epic season with Tasmania in the Sheffield Shield last year.

Webster was crowned the player of the season for the 2023-24 season, scoring 938 runs while taking 30 wickets.

And while disappointing for Marsh, Cummins revealed the touching words the Western Australia batter had for the debutant.

'He [Marsh] is really excited for Beau,' Cummins said.

'The first thing he said was: "I can’t wait for Beau to go out there and give it a crack".'

But according to Cummins, last week's Boxing Day Test will not be Marsh's last appearance for the Test side.

'Particularly here in Australia, when a batter misses out or gets dropped, it’s always seen as a big thing, but it’s not the case,' Cummins said.

'We love pulling a squad of players together who we can call on at different times, and we thought the time was right for Mitchy to have a freshen-up and miss this one.

'But doesn’t mean that he won’t be back in the team at some point.'

Cummins reflected further on the decision to bring Webster in for the final Test, telling reporters that his skills with the ball in hand will be useful.

It comes amid doubts over Mitchell Starc's fitness. The pace bowler has been passed as fit to play after having struggled with an upper-body issue during the Melbourne Test.

While Marsh has struggled to take wickets, the addition of Webster will give Cummins another option to attack India, with the captain claiming it will be 'handy' to have the Tasmanian quick on the pitch.

'That was definitely a factor,' Cummins admitted.

'It’s always nice to have a fifth bowler that bowls quite a lot for Tasmania. So if we need to call on that, we can.

'Firstly, if you’re going to bat six, you picked for your batting, which he’s shown in Shield over the last couple of years when he takes the game on, and he’s really changed some games for Tasmania.

'That pace bowling of Beau’s going to be handy.'

I think prasid.as per multiple reports, there were concerns raised on harshit long spell bowling effectiveness and fitness.
Nooooo! Prasidh is mental midget and a serial bottler with poor fitness. He will break down after 6 pvers and conceding 6 boundaries.. Anyone but Prasidh.. Harshit is way better..

Hoping Rohit and Kohli say this for Gill, Sarfaraz , Easwaran etc .... Never gonna happen.. Thats the difference b/w Aus seniors and Ind seniors.

Good if true. Ash and Rohit gone. Jadeja and Kohli should be given ultimatums too.
Kohli and jadeja should be dropped as well even for the Sydney test. But Ind wont drop them if they are dropping rohit because they cant drop all 3 at once. Just the way it is. Hope this is the last we see of Kohli and jadeja in tests.

Still no clarity but it does appear after consultant with coach and BCCI, Rohit could be given rest from final test.

Let's wait to see final decision but appreciate the hard work going into decision making process by BCCI and coach. Every match counts for team India.

I think he's an absolutely useless test cricketer. He would never have played this many tests if he wasn't Geoff Marsh's son. Australia are much better off backing someone new in that position. At his age Marsh ain't getting any better.

He is a good white-ball player and should stick to that.

Webster is replacing him by the look of it. They generally go with like for like replacement. After seeing success of Konstas they wil go with Webster. Infact in BGT new players do better with a few exceptions.

That is really awesome. I know Cummins and Marsh were buddies way back in 2015 WC when they were nobodies. It's a shame that some other teams players dont know or understand that they arent scoring runs or getting enough wickets.

I think Marsh has averaged 10 with the bat in this series and has not bowled much either. Whatever Webster does, it would be very hard to do any worse than Marsh.

Yea.. he was not bad before the start of the series like ROhit or Kohli. Even at Perth he made 47 or something in the 2nd dig. So they backed him for 3 more tests. Infact against NZ before this series Australia was starring down the barrel at 80/5 chasing 279. Him and ALex carey put on a miraculous partnership of 140 for 6th wicket in 25 overs. Australia won't stop backing players especially at home. It disturbs their psyche.

It's New Zealand. They have some kind of mental block against Australia. No doubt he has played some good knocks, in the Ashes too he made a roaring comeback. But I have been seeing this for years now. He makes a comeback, plays a few good innings, goes back to his old form, gets dropped, rise, repeat. Saw it in 2018 too when he smashed 180-odd in The Ashes. I just think that Australia would be better off moving on from him. I mean, he's 33. If he was going to stake his place in the playing eleven, he would have by now.

Bumrah's presence has turn this series into a worst nightmare for him. Dismissed him 3 out of 4 last times. Now that Smith has found some form they will confidently drop him.

i just want india to win for sweep shot. it would make him so happy.
we win even if we lose cause rohit and kohli will be sacked hehe.
Kohli will play in the Tour of England.

Sharma should be given last game , a proper farewell

Shan Masood is better than Rohit Sharma as a batsman?

Rohit dropped 5 spots and officially 40th ranked batsman in the world. SHan Masood is 57th ranked batsman. Shan Masood was ranked 40th in December 2020. Since then it was always above 40. As much as Rohit sucks with bat, Shan is even worse

After a span of 39 years, the Marsh family Test era ends.

Collectively, Geoff, Shaun and Mitch:

225 completed innings, 7,202 runs at 32.0

51 wickets at 40.4 (all Mitch).

Unless he starts to drop catches too.
Australians in general have a very high standard of fielding. I don't think Webster will be a terrible fielder and its not necessary that he will be fielding in such a key position like the slips either.

The only good thing I can recall from Shaun Marsh's career is the innings he played in India in 2017 to help Australia draw the test match. Bang on mediocre player otherwise. Same for Mitch who somehow managed to play 46 tests despite rarely averaging over 30 with the bat.

Players like him are used mainly for balance.

Yeah but he is not exactly bringing alot of balance either if he is barely bowling and not picking up any wickets.
Ya. this is his last. Bumrah has finished his career. Possibly sweeney's career as well. Potentially Khawaja as well who has been his bunny. 2 seniors will be gone after this series. Labu lucked out massively due to umpire call, dropped catches, so many close shaves.

Labu is highly overrated but still miles better than all the above mentioned players. Khawaja had a good late-career purple patch, but it ended long ago. He is pretty much is on his last legs at this point.

Labu always missies out on umpire calls and catches .in ci, there was an article how lucky he was. I think almost 3 or 4 dismissals before an actual one.smith and kohli are the least lucky ones as every one is quite attentive when they are in the mix.
