What's new

Australia [288] defeat West Indies [273/9] by 15 runs in ICC World Cup 2019

lol feel bad for the windies

The one time in his career that Coulter- Nile actually does something with the bat

What a champion side Australia is. Only they could have made this comeback.

Shades of Kapil Dev’s innings of 175* vs Zimbabwe 1983 in Nathan Coulter Nile

Never underestimate Aussies in a major tournament, each of their players are fighters and often the guy shaky for his spot delivers. This is because of their uncompromising, ruthless grooming in domestics.

This is scary.. Aus's entire bowling attack can bat. How r they not wining this WC?

He hammered India quite a few times too. He can smash.

before this game, the likes of Hasan Ali had more performances with the bat.

It was obvious he had the ability, but coulter nile has been a dud most of his career

the pitch is defintiely flat now.

windies should chase this , unless batsman should not do anything silly,

He is basically a bowler who can bat a bit..like Faheem.

Haha Faheem can only dream of playing an innings like this. Hope he gets a 100. Fantastic innings.

Australia on course for 300+ :O

Every run Coulter-Nile scores is a slap on the face of Michael Holding. He’s very biased. Horrible commentary.

The best thing with them is mostly full developed players are selected to national side, not just a player who has only one good season in domestic.

But this has been a very flawless world class innings so far. Shows his batting talent

Pak crumbled against WI from almost a similar situation which Australia was under today. Whether they win or lose, it was an exceptional come back and they are known for it in the WCs.

Faheem has played quite a match winning innings in the PSL too.

No doubt Aussies are a champion side..but the question beckons..if you have no confidence in Nurse why is he playing...secondly why is braithwaite bowling in the death when Holder has few overs left???

And their genes too :).

This is where we needed the Baber typical knock but too bad he wanted to please keyboard warriors with his high strike rate.

Faheem actually aint a bad comparison when it comes to batting. You are looking at this innings in isolation

I would rate an innings in ICC tournament especially WC higher than in a series. World cup is still on so you never know someone else might play a blinder in the middle order.

You were mentioning the number of impactful innings. Obviously this is Pandyas first WC and he had a fantastic innings in CT 2017 final as well. This innings of NCN is better but then no other AR innings would be better in history apart from maybe Kapil against Zim.

Yup Imran khan has not produced an innings remotely close to What NCN has done here. That doesn't make NCN better than Imran. These kind of innings happen alll the time in world cups. Some random guy and smoke the bowling around in one innings. Bichel did twice in 2003 world cup. Both match winning

NCN is not that good a batsman. This was pretty unimaginative stuff from them. Hemtyer shelled an easy catch.

agreed

this is reminiscent of Gul smashing England for 65 during a test match on a green top. It was more crap bowling that made his innings better than it was.

Obviously, though being a World Cup, this innings will go down in folklore

One thinf impress, Aus didn't shut their shop after losing Maxwell. They kept on finding odd boundaries to keep WI in check. Pak would have settled for a 250 total at best

Amit Mishra scored 86 in England when top order that had Tendulkar, Dravid crumbled lol These things can happen. Will continue to happen in the world cup. Y day a grossly out of form Chris Morris made a 40 out of the blue.

Actually other way round - they pick top talents for FC cricket at very early age. Most of their U19 top players play in U19 WC as FC players and they are genuine U19. Therefore by the time they are picked for National team, often 5 years veteran by the genuine age of U23. Also, they identify future Captains and make him domestic Captain often well before 23 ... Ponting was Tasmania Captain at 21, Taylor was Captain for that ATG NSW team at 23, Greg & Ian both Captained SA & NWS before 23, Border was Queensland Captain at 22 ...... Benaud was NSW Captain at 21.....

Early candidate for the best innings this World Cup, from Coulter Nile

250 lol, if we had got to 130 it would have been some achievement.

I agree about Kapil's and also that Pandya played a pretty impactful innings in a series. However, I dont rate his innings in CT17 much, there was no pressure and match was almost already gone by then but still he played well.

Is this "never give up" attitude force-fed into all Aussie kids growing up?? :danish

From 80 odd for 5 to a target of 289. Only Australia can do that.

Well, that is what I am saying, before a player represents his senior national side he is completely ready, no matter if it is an 19 years old or a 35 years. And I agree with you on how they select a player and make him captain later, same was the case with Michael Clarke. You alteady knew he would take over after Ponting years before.

In that case there is nothing to disagree

That is why they won 5 World cups, they never give up

This is the biggest myth in sports - not giving up is not a born attitude, rather it's a developed quality and one can do that only if he has the capability, mindset and past experience. The biggest difference with ENG & AUS cricket is that, ENG always (from 1870s) have backed multi-skilled players, someone can do both (facets) a bit but not necessarily good at either (there are players like Hammond, Botham, WG, Greig, Flintoff, Rhodes ...); but Aussies won't ever pick players on contribution factor - their players must have to be good at one core skill.

Things have changed a bit with so many T20s around, therefore these days players like Stoinis, Maxwell are given lots of backing, but a player like Greg Mathews had 5 years career (that too during their worst period) tells lot about their selection criteria. Specialists will always do better in crisis than jack of all trades - even Aussie bowlers can fight is out with bat not because they are better batsman, rather they play (used to play till Big Bash cursed their domestics), on similar situation half the games in every season.

Now that Aussies have got a score lets see some Gayle and co fireworks. The WC has been a bit boring so far with the exception of Eng v Pak game.

Great innings by Nile to put his team in the driving seat from nowhere. A lesser team like Pak would have collapsed to 120 all out after losing five quick wickets. This is what world champions are made off that someone puts up their hand when the chips are down to take responsibility for the entire team. Marvellous!

No other team in this WC would have come back like Aus did today. From 147/6 to reach 288. Simply stunning

Fully expect their bowlers to rip through Windies now. This is why they should be favorites for title

By the time we play WIN, I hope half of their squad is serving a ban for over rate ......

Should be harsher punishment and instant punishment - WIN took their comfort in this game and gave Aussies a tough time, benefit will go to next team (s) if Holder & OThomas are suspended, which isn't fair. They should add penalty runs for slow over rate.

We can bt WI at full strength. Only a coward wants to play a reduced strength side.

They should add extra runs based on the final RR and overs short. RR could be based on from the time the innings should've been completed.

Once stage saw WI had the aussies 6 down for 160 odd or something. How they managed to get 280 odd is impressive by the aussie tailenders.

For BD, Pk, even SL, Windies losing is better. We all know Aus is a guaranteed top 4 team.

I took a nap and woke up to see Aussies setting up 280+ :afridi

Now I can enjoy my second Eid holiday

My favorite fast bowler in the world cUmmins !! Got a wicket. He is going to be set the world cup ablaze

Definitely. What a comeback. Shows the value of never giving up until the end.
