Stokes in denial " This isn't about skill"

It's all about skill. None of your bowlers have the ability to plug away on a length all day long like Boland and Neser did.
Stokes and England experts are arrogant. They deserved this humiliation.

This was the excuse a day before. 👇

Exhausted after playing five days of Test cricket in two matches, even with a 10 day gap included.😂😂😂😂

:klopp :kp

Third class team England, most overhyped captain and cricketer Ben Stokes.

Losing against an Aussie side without Cummins, Hazelwood, Lloyn etc

Unlikely to drop him. They've put their eggs in one basket here.

He's pumped up.

You are right though it's far too late! The series is gone we needed this earlier.

Smith flipping rattled him too with that comment - you bowl fast when there is nothing on the line. Then tonks him for 6!
Yup - Truth hurts.

I’m a great fan of express bowling - I love watching that more than sixes. I love the fire, the aggression and even arrogance of fast bowlers, but I just find myself not wanting to root for Archer. He’s just too lazy, but tries to exude the arrogance that there’s no-one better or quicker than him. If that’s the case, then show it when it matters

I don't think it's about skill. There is some differences in skill but its not too big a gap.

The ability to plug away yes you can say its a skill but its also a discipline thing. This has been forged through repetition and lots of FC cricket for Neser and Boland.

England consistently wilt under pressure and lose key sessions of test matches often due to self-sabotage.

There isn't anyone in the England side that you look at and think these guys shouldn't be playing test match cricket ( apart from perhaps Crawley and Pope).

They are mentally very unfit. Brendan recognised this straight away and to try and take away the doubts and indecision from them, asked them to bash the ball. It worked for a bit and in certain conditions, but has probably run its course now.

From my perspective, as a fan, it has been both enjoyable but also frustrating.

Australia extend WTC27 undefeated run with win over England

The hosts went 2-0 up in the Ashes series in Brisbane, and maintain a perfect run in the World Test Championship cycle.

Australia have moved to a 2-0 Ashes series lead, capping off a dominant display on day four in Brisbane.

The victory keeps Australia top of the World Test Championship table with a perfect 100 percent of possible points in their five matches, while England drop below New Zealand to seventh, with a PCT of 30.95.

Pinning England into a corner at 134/6 in their second innings at the end of day three after posting a first innings score of 511, Australia's all-out pace attack were pushed in their charge, with England opting for a more dogged and defensive approach at the start of day four.

Ben Stokes and Will Jacks buckled down for the first session on day four, but a stunner from Steve Smith off Michael Neser's bowling got Australia the breakthrough.

Neser continued delivering for the hosts, as he ran through the tailenders and secured a maiden five-wicket haul. Stokes (50) was the only England batter to score a half-century in the innings.

Chasing 65, Gus Atkinson troubled Australia early, but Steve Smith's attacking cameo (23* off nine balls) secured an eight-wicket win for the hosts within the 10-over mark.

Coincidentally, this was the same margin by which Australia had overcome England in the Perth Test as well, where Smith hit the winning runs too.

The third Test begins in Adelaide on December 17.

First Test: Perth Stadium, November 21-22 (Australia won by eight wickets)
Second Test: Gabba, December 4-7 (Australia won by eight wickets)
Third Test: Adelaide Oval, December 17-21
Fourth Test: MCG, December 26-30
Fifth Test: SCG, January 4-8

The problem is these are selection choices. England went for bowlers like Archer and Wood for their ability to bowl upto 150 kph.

There is nothing about them that suggests that they are Test bowlers who are particularly durable etc.

Pope and Crawley are problems too.

But England clearly went into this series trying to blast Australia out with pace and it hasn't worked in 3 out of 4 innings

Domestic Shield bowlers like Neser have outbowled them.

Yes, they have honed their skills by bowling for years in domestic but the skill gap is still there .

The Ashes: Ben Stokes questions England's mentality and demands 'more fight' after defeat in Brisbane

A disconsolate Ben Stokes questioned England's mentality and demanded more fight from his side after they suffered another eight-wicket drubbing at the hands of Australia to go 2-0 down in the Ashes.

Having lost inside two days in the series opener in Perth, England were well beaten again in Brisbane as they could set Australia only 65 to win despite showing more resistence on day four at The Gabba.

The skipper himself led from the front, hitting a 36th Test fifty as he shared in a 96-run stand for the seventh wicket with Will Jacks that at least forced Australia to bat again.

But the damage had already been done after a wayward bowling display early on day two that allowed Australia off to a flier in reponse to England's first-innings 334, along with five dropped catches in the home side's 511, and then a top-order batting collapse late on day three that had the tourists limping towards another heavy defeat.

"When the game is on the line, teams are able to handle that pressure better than us," Stokes said in an interview with TNT Sports.

"We are a great team when we are ahead, when we are behind and playing huge catch-up we are great, but when then game is on the line we are not able to stand up to pressure. That is obvious as a captain.

"It's a mentality, a mindset. How you get yourself into a head space to make clear decisions is so

"No one means to drop catches or not bowl where you are supposed to but those things cannot happen at this level."

Stokes: We won't shy away from the battle

At the post-match presentation, Stokes added: "We knew exactly how we needed to bowl and we weren't able to do it for a long enough period to put Australia under pressure, that was evident in the way they were able to score so quickly and easily.

"We weren't able to execute with bat and ball and we'll be having some conversations in the dressing room.

"It seems to be a constant theme that when the pressure is on, Australia keep outdoing us. They say Australia is not a place for weak men and we are definitely not weak but we need to find something."

Despite his obvious disappointment, Stokes backed his side to still turn the series around, urging his team to show more fight as they look to win the final three Tests.

"We won't shy away from the battle but we need to sort thing out pretty quick if we want to bring the Ashes back to England," Stokes said.

"I absolutely believe in that dressing room. I have full belief in the players and coaching staff. We know we have to win these next three games.

"We need to show more fight. It's not a skill thing, so we need to find out why we seem to keep doing what we are doing."

'Root told me after Perth he'd get a big score'

In his follow up with TNT Sports, Stokes also pointed to Joe Root as an example for his side to follow, the former England captain having finally answered some of his critics with a first hundred in Australia in the first innings.

Speaking on the Sky Sports Cricket podcast, Michael Atherton and Nasser Hussain reflected on Joe Root's first Test hundred in Australia.

"Root getting a hundred is a great example for the group," Stokes said. "Just look at the scrutiny he was under coming out here.

"He sat next to me after that first Test in Perth and apologised - which I said he never has to do - and told me he would get a big score next time.

"That is an incredible mindset that everyone can feed off. To do what he did this week, a lot of guys can learn from that, myself included."

Averaged 39.10 with the ball this year as a team.

31 and 29 in 2024 and 2023.

Bowling is extremely mediocre
The lengths were horrible in the 2nd inns at Perth and the 1st inns here.

That said, the five drops didn't help either. According to CricViz England's catch percentage of 58% in night sessions of D/N Tests is the worst in the world.

If anything, we trained too much' - McCullum

What does that even mean? Hope he meant strategy wise because playing few more balls in nets or bowling few more overs cannot be termed as overprepared.

I genuinely felt this ENgland team would impose themselves given the vulnerablity of Australian batting order. Labu looked done a few months back. Head was goign through bad patch. Smith is not queit the same. Khawaja was so done a few years back. Very fragile looking line up. Full strength English pace attack could not exploit that. THey went for Atkinson for imaginary batting depth. They should go with Tongue in the next match.

One thing is for sure, Poms are sore losers.

Atleast Root got a century vs this attack, its gonna get serious now with Cummins and Hazelwood back in the team.

2-0 it is.

After this Ashes series, will England abandon the Bazball philosophy? It is clearly not working as England did poorly in all 3 WTCs.

I think one mistake ECB did was make Brendan McCallum the Test coach. He himself wasn't a great Test batter; he was more like a good LOI batter. How can he be the Test coach? :inti

They should have organised a match with a local side after the first test, they look clueless out thr, and thr 2nd team is getting hammered by aussies 2nd team - cant bring anyone in

It's really laughable how this England team gets hyped up by their fans and pundits despite them regularly coming up with trash performances. Today with them trailing by around 20, 6 wickets down and crawling at a snail's pace, Vaughan in his smug tone says something like - if England can bat without any loss until the break (40 mins later), Australia will start to feel the nerves.

Stokes is a champion cricketer, there is no doubt about that. But to go on and on about something that happened 6 years ago is why the rest of the world laughs at this team when they get shot down.

"Why play your shots when there's no rush on the scoreboard?", says Jofra Archer, a guy with figures of 1-115 in the match

Boycott Slams England After Second Ashes Defeat

England’s hopes of reclaiming the Ashes took another heavy blow after their eight‑wicket defeat in the second Test, leaving Ben Stokes’ side trailing 2‑0 in the series. Former opener Geoffrey Boycott did not hold back in his assessment, delivering a scathing critique of both players and leadership.

“Brisbane was a horror show: irresponsible batting, bowling too short, too wide, or too full, and catches dropped,” Boycott said. “This Australian team was there to be beaten, but somehow, after just six days of Ashes cricket, England needs a miracle. England talks the talk but can’t walk the walk. With this sort of batting and bowling, they couldn’t win an egg cup, let alone the Ashes urn.”

Turning his attention to captain Ben Stokes, Boycott dismissed the team’s long‑term planning. “Ben Stokes said England had a blueprint. They had been planning this tour for four years and know what they are doing. What a load of bull—. We can’t believe anything Ben or his team says. None of them wants to listen to anyone outside of their own camp.”

Boycott accused the squad of arrogance and a lack of accountability. “They are up their own backsides, convinced that Test cricket has changed so much that only they know anything about the modern game. One of the problems with this squad is that it appears nobody tells them off or sits them down and discusses what they could or should have done differently. All we ever hear from the captain is ‘attack,’ and from the coach, ‘keep the faith.’”

Reflecting on his own career, Boycott contrasted past standards with the current side’s shortcomings. “But what do I know? I am just a has‑been who did four England tours of Australia, winning two Ashes series and drawing the other two. This lot aren’t even afraid of getting dropped, which is why we see the same old failings, particularly in the batting.”

Boycott nailed it.

I think England need to drop Stokes and end this Bazball nonsense. Also, Brendon McCullum probably should be sacked. He himself wasn't a great Test player. He was more of a LOI player.

If you are planning for four years for this series and you are 0-2 down, it shows your process was entirely wrong. A change is needed. :inti

4 years preparation for this moment. Australia lost two of their MVPs before even the contest. Bowled Australia out for 120 odd. Yet here we are.

Look at the number of Aussies in the bowling list. Incredible. And they miss 3 of them. Yet England could not beat them.

Pakistanis who go on and on about Indians being jealous of Joe Root or England and hence critical should go through this thread. It's filled with Indians calling him King back then and keep in mind we had King Kohli back then. Every Indian is supporting Smith over England.

It's not a new phenomenon. In Australia vs England, Indians tend to support Australia.

I don't hate Australia or Smith, but these wannabe Supporters ( one Even totally changed his team) are the reason I sometimes target Australia.

@The Bald Eagle Opening thread after thread on india vs australia to makes a point against india but never Open a thread( spoiler alerts) about india vs Pakistan because they knew they can't beat india.

This was the most hyped test series but the quality of cricket has been so poor from england.
Bazball batting has always been reckless, but the bowling was somehow even worse.
2023 bazball was backed by quality bowling , its been shockingly bad this year.
England badly need Tongue.
Pope is a horrible batter, Jacks should be the new no 3.

I would usually say eng have a chance to come back, but the bowling is so incredibly poor atm that they may not have a chance at all.

When you are 0-2 down in Australia, there generally is no coming back. :inti
