Cricket Victoria has launched an investigation into serious allegations of ball-tampering in a First XI match on Saturday.

Victorian Premier Cricket operations boss Darren Anderson confirmed on Sunday that there were serious allegations of deliberate ball-tampering during Casey South Melbourne’s clash with Melbourne, with an umpires report being prepared on the matter.

Code Sports reports that umpires immediately noticed the deterioration of the ball on one side after it was thrown in from the outfield.

It has been alleged that the ball had been scraped along a concrete path beyond the boundary.

It was immediately replaced and the umpires awarded a five-run penalty to Melbourne after the alleged act on Day 2.

A photo from the ground shows a long red streak along the concrete at the site of the alleged ball tampering.

The ball has now been collected, and a written report is set to be lodged on Monday.

“From what I understand, it happened early and the umpires noticed something that didn’t seem right and under the laws of cricket followed the procedures from there,’’ Anderson told Code Sports.

Melbourne won the match, chasing down Casey South Melbourne’s 306.
