Australia tour of India (2023)

Rohit ponders dress rehearsal for WTC final in Ahmedabad

If they seal qualification for the World Test Championship final in England, then India will consider simulating those conditions and personnel in the fourth Test of the ongoing series against Australia, admitted skipper Rohit Sharma.

"There is definitely a possibility of that," Rohit said on the eve of the Indore Test. "We have already spoken about it. We need to get the guys ready for it. The important one is Shardul Thakur, because he comes into the planning for us. We don't know how ready he is since he has just gotten married. We don't know how many overs he has bowled. But that thought process is definitely there. If we do what we do here and get the result we want, we might think of doing something different in Ahmedabad for sure."

Not Shardul thakur for god's sake. If team management thinks he is another Jadeja or Ashwin or Axar they are Highly mistaken.

Can't wait to see the back of this team management.

I think it is for WTC Final preparation. It will be in England and Shardul is 4th pacer.

Smith to captain ODIs as Cummins remains at home

Steve Smith will retain the captaincy reins for the three-match one-day international series beginning later this week after Australia confirmed Pat Cummins would not return to India after missing the final two Tests.

Cummins departed the tour after the second Test in Delhi to care for his mother Maria, who died from breast cancer last week while the final match in Ahmedabad was being played.

"Pat won’t be coming back, he’s still taking care of what’s happened back home," coach Andrew McDonald said. "Our thoughts are with Pat and his family as they go through that grieving process."

It means Smith will stay on as skipper having led the Test side in their final two matches of the campaign that finished in a drawn match at the Narendra Modi Stadium, setting the series ledger at 2-1 in favour of the hosts.

Cummins took over the ODI job after Aaron Finch's retirement last year but has led them in just two matches so far, both coming in a forgettable campaign at home in November against a demotivated England side that had just won the T20 World Cup.

The upcoming series beginning in Mumbai on Friday takes on extra significance given it will be played in the same country hosting the ODI World Cup later this year.

McDonald confirmed David Warner, who has not been among the 50-over squad members training in Ahmedabad in recent days, was set to return to the side after missing the final two Tests due to a fractured elbow.

Cummins has not been replaced in the 15-man squad, but Nathan Ellis was recently recalled after Jhye Richardson was a late withdrawal having been forced to undergo hamstring surgery.

On the pace front, Josh Hazlewood, who also captained the ODI team during that England series when Cummins missed a match, is absent with an ongoing Achilles injury.

Ashton Agar has returned after being sent home midway through the Test series and will reform his spin partnership with Adam Zampa.

The series also marks the returns of Glenn Maxwell (broken leg) and Mitchell Marsh (ankle surgery) from serious injuries.

McDonald suggested the team is considering how many allrounders, among which also include Cameron Green and Marcus Stoinis, can fit into their one-day team.

"We've got a couple conversations around the balance of the team we want to play, we've gone in with a structure with eight batters to bat a little bit deeper, we've tried that," said the coach.

"So there'll be a mix of combinations as we lead into the World Cup.

"(There is) a lot of allrounders picked in the squad and can they all play in the one team. So we've got to answer a few of those questions."

Avesh Khan is a gone case. Not sure why he keeps popping up in the squad every now and then. He seems to have good support from outside.

Prasidh is a joke and Mukesh is a trundler. I would even pick Natarajan over him any day and Natarajan is very average bowler. Sad to see that Umran Malik is not even part of this B-Squad. He seems to be a gone case.

Australia’s tour of India, 2023

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have named an experienced T20 performer as the captain of the team for the five-game T20I series against Australia.

Suryakumar Yadav was named as the captain of the side which will take on Australia in the five T20I home series.

Fast bowler Prasidh Krishna, who was a late entrant to the World Cup squad, is also a part of the squad.

A majority of the members of the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023 have been rested after the gruelling tournament and the build-up to it. Only three players – Suryakumar, Ishan Kishan and Prasidh Krisha – will play in the upcoming T20I series.

On the other hand, Hardik Pandya who has led India in recent times, is still in recovery mode after his injury and didn't make the squad. The all-rounder injured himself during India’s league stage ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup encounter against Bangladesh in Pune.

Pacer Jasprit Bumrah, who had led India in his comeback T20I series against Ireland, has been rested after a high-intensity World Cup campaign.

Suryakumar has been a prolific performer in the T20I format, having scored 1841 runs at an average of 46.02 and a strike rate of 172.7. He also has three T20I centuries to his name.

The series also marks the return of Axar Patel, who was initially named in the World Cup squad but was later ruled out due to injury.

One hell of a battle is coming up between the Winner of the ICC World Cup 2023, Australia, and the runner-up team India.

David Warner withdraws from T20 series as India name under-strength squad

Australia’s selectors have withdrawn David Warner from the Twenty20 series against India, paving the way for Steve Smith to trial as an opener for next year’s World Cup in the format.

Warner was on Tuesday officially ruled out, given the chance to return home and rest before his final Test series against Pakistan.

The opener’s withdrawal serves as another blow to what looms as one of the most overlooked Australian series in recent memory. If ever there needed to be a reminder about cricket’s cluttered calendar, this five-match series is it.

The opening game will be played in Visakhapatnam, just four days after India lost to Australia in the 50-over World Cup final.

The hosts named their squad for the series on Tuesday, with Suryakumar Yadav the only player who featured in the decider available for the first three matches.

Matches will also be played in Thiruvananthapuram, Barsapara, Nagpur and Hyderabad, with Australia having never played in the first two of those cities before.

By series end, Australia will also have played 26 matches in India in 2023, with four Tests and three ODIs earlier in the year, before another bilateral series in September and then the ODI World Cup.

Warner has been replaced in the squad by young allrounder Aaron Hardie, giving him and Tanveer Sangha the chance to impress in front of potential IPL suitors.

Cricket is still catching up contractually-obligated matches from Covid, with a raft of other series meaning these games did not fit earlier in the year.

The series is theoretically the beginning of preparations for next year’s T20 World Cup in the Caribbean and USA. But India’s squad also only includes three players who featured in last year’s 20-over event.

Australia will be without their frontline quicks and Mitch Marsh, but there is some chance to begin plans for the 2024 T20 World Cup.

Smith has spoken about his desire to open the batting, and will likely be able to now do so with Travis Head after Warner’s exit.

The former captain was initially slated to open in matches against South Africa in September, but was ruled out of the series with a wrist injury.

Overlooked for large parts of Australia’s T20 World Cup last year, Smith smashed two centuries at the top of the order in the Big Bash League for the Sydney Sixers last summer.

He now faces competition from the likes of Head, Marsh and Warner to be at the top of the order for next year’s World Cup, after having never opened before in international T20 cricket.

“Anyone would want to open in T20 cricket,” Smith said at the start of the summer.

“It was cool to be able to show what I could do in the Big Bash. Hopefully I can replicate that internationally as well.”

Australia squad: Matthew Wade (c), Aaron Hardie, Jason Behrendorff, Sean Abbott, Tim David, Nathan Ellis, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Glenn Maxwell, Tanveer Sangha, Matt Short, Steve Smith, Marcus Stoinis, Kane Richardson, Adam Zampa.

India squad: Suryakumar Yadav (c), Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ishan Kishan, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Tilak Varma, Rinku Singh, Jitesh Sharma, Washington Sundar, Axar Patel, Shivam Dube, Ravi Bishnoi, Arshdeep Singh, Prasidh Krishna, Avesh Khan, Mukesh Kumar, Shreyas Iyer (last two matches only).

Honestly, series should never have been scheduled. The players who just played the WC must be exhausted. Unfortunately I feel that Steve Smith, Maxwell, etc will try to play every game because their spot in the T20 side is questionable.

I don't know about Maxwell's spot being in question. The others, yes

Point of these useless bilaterals? Don't you play enough t20 in ipl.
Lol what a pointless series. After losing the main game in the final.

Even india fans here won't watch I am sure.

Just don't understand this. There is a Huge rush for India-Australia T-20 match tickets in Visakhapatnam on 23rd Nov, 2023. Tickets likely to be Sold Out. But this was 4 days back before the WC final. Not sure if they will go now after the wc result.

But I thought no one would care about this series. Baffling to me. Feel for Indian fans. They are maligned, but damn it do they have patience, passion and most importantly patience. No non-SC country's fans would tolerate 10 consecutive ICC tournament this is the exact reason, we dont see changes in bcci and they know this crazy crowd will come no matter whats happens -
As fans, they need to demand more. This behavior is why BCCI thinks they can get away with anything. even more damning in Ind case because of BCCI's riches, India's enormous human resources, lack of support for other sports etc. ..this is the exact reason, we dont see changes in bcci and they know this crazy crowd will come no matter what..

Tickets for the first match were sold way before the finals. So it's interesting to see the attendance now. One advantage for bcci is apart from last match, all other matches are in tier 2 cities and its a t20 where lots of new faces are there.so youngsters/kids may watch the game

Tilak Varma established ahead of the second T20I against Australia that he was very clear about his role in the T20 International setup.

India's rising star Tilak Varma maintained that he has a very specific role in the Indian side ahead of the second T20I against Australia in Thiruvananthapuram.

With the 2024 ICC Men's T20 World Cup not too far away, Tilak is among the few candidates vying for a place in the Indian middle-order. The 21-year-old stressed that he was very clear about his mindset in the previous game despite holing out to leg-spinner Tanveer Sangha.

"My mindset was like, in that situation, the leg spinner was bowling, so I want to take charge because we want 10 per over in that situation," Tilak explained in the pre-match press conference.

"So at that time, my mindset was clear. If the leg spinner is bowling, I'll go after him. So for fast bowlers, settled batter and captain Surya bhai [Suryakumar Yadav] was batting. I was confident that he could finish against the fast bowlers. So especially that over I want to charge the leg spinner."

The left-hander further expressed that he wants to stick to his role in the team and does not take too much pressure.

"My mindset is simple. As I said before, I have got a role in the team. So I just want to stick to that role and I'll be clear with my mindset.

"I don't have any pressure like expectation doing well and all. So I just have my role. So I just fulfill my role for the team. So that is what I'm just looking forward to."

Speaking of Rinku Singh and his exploits in India colours, Tilak said that he wanted to emulate the consistency shown by Rinku under pressure.

"I like finishing the games but I am learning from Rinku. He is doing very consistently for India. I also want to do the same. So, I think in coming matches I will be looking to do that."

India vs Australia T20I Series 'Devalued': Cricket Great On What 'Cheapens' The Contest

Australian great Michael Hussey believes the five-match T20I series against India just after the World Cup had devalued the contest, adding that an overkill of cricket was "physically" and "mentally" tiring out the players. Just four days after Australia lifted the ODI World Cup in Ahmedabad defeating India on November 19, the teams squared off for the first T20I in Visakhapatnam on November 23. "I certainly feel like this T20 series has been devalued. It doesn't cheapen the World Cup but it certainly cheapens this series," Hussey, who has more than 12,000 international runs across the three formats, told Sen Radio on Wednesday.

With six Australian players returning home after the third T20I in Guwahati to prepare for the upcoming Test series against Pakistan, or to take a break, Hussey felt this certainly was not the best side competing against the hosts.

"There would be a number of guys who were at the World Cup (for both nations) would probably be in their T20 teams. They got home to either prepare for a Test series or simply to have a break.

"This is certainly not the best Australian T20 team going up against the best India T20 team," he averred.

Suryakumar Yadav is the only player in the current team to feature in India's World Cup squad.

Hussey also expressed his anguish with the amount of cricket being played these days.

"It's just amazing how much (cricket boards) pack on a calendar to play so much cricket. It is physically and mentally impossible to play all of the tournaments that are going on," he said.

Following the grand success of the World Cup, Hussey said ODIs should feature more on the international schedule.

"I might be in the minority here but I think (ODI cricket) is a great game. It caters for so many different types of players (and) over the course of the 100 overs, the better team has more of a chance to come out on top.

"The last World Cup was a great advertisement for the game. There was some unbelievable cricket played. There were some stories to come out (of the World Cup) that will live for 100 years," he added.

Agree with everything Hussey has said.

This T20 series feels like an assault on the senses. To use one comparison, like you’re being offered to consume a hundred Mickey D burgers five minutes after a five course Michelin star meal.

Hussey is right on the money.

An extremely pointless series.

The fourth T20 international between India and Australia will be played today at Raipur's Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh stadium. But with just hours to go for the crucial encounter, there is no electricity in parts of the stadium. Reason: An electricity bill which hasn't been paid since 2009.

The stadium has an outstanding bill of ₹ 3.16 crore, due to which the electricity connection at the stadium had been cut 5 years ago. A temporary connection was installed at the request of the Chhattisgarh State Cricket Association, but that only covers the spectators' gallery and boxes. The floodlights during the match today would need to be run using a generator.

Raipur Rural Circle in-charge Ashok Khandelwal said that the Secretary Cricket Association has applied to increase the capacity of the temporary connection of the stadium.

At present, the capacity of the temporary connection is 200 KV. An application to upgrade it to 1 thousand KV has been approved, but work on it hasn't started yet.

In 2018, there was an uproar when athletes participating in a half-marathon realised that there was no electricity supply at the stadium. It was then announced that the electricity bill hadn't been paid since 2009, and had gone up to ₹ 3.16 crore.

After the construction of the stadium, its maintenance was handed over to the Public Works Department (PWD), while the remaining expenses were to be borne by the Sports Department. The two departments have been blaming each other for the unpaid power bill.

The electricity company sent several notices to PWD and Sports Department for clearance of dues, but no payment has been made yet.

Three international cricket matches have been organised in the stadium since the power connection was cut in 2018.

The Chhattisgarh State Cricket Sangh (CSCS) which currently manages the stadium, said that there is no payment that they owe to the electricity department.

"We can't comment on the previous dues of the department that the stadium was under prior to CSCS coming in. That connection where dues maybe there was in the name of the relevant government department," said Jubin Shah, President-CSCS.

Lol hopefully they cut off the lights in the second innings …. At least we shall have some worthwhile drama instead of this joke of a stupendously pointless series.

In the future Ftp,I see 3 days after 2026 t20 world cup in India, Australia is travelling to pak for 3 odi's. I hope all the ppner's will equally condem that tour too.Seems Australia is hell bent on games in subcontinent after the cup .

To be honest I don't agree with the below argument. Australia could just play a different squad (just like India has) from their WC squad. Even though it's a lot of cricket, and even though this series is kind of pointless, it's still a good opportunity for others to get international match practice. And the stadiums are full which means there is still appitite in India to come to see live cricket.

The below is from Sen:

While Marsh left India days later to continue the celebrations in Australia, six teammates weren’t so lucky.

With a five-match T20I series against India getting underway just four days after the World Cup triumph, celebrations were capped for those who were staying in the sub-continent.

Marsh said he hopes common sense prevails and similar series aren’t fixtured in the future.

“Yeah it was pretty outrageous for the guys that had to stay behind,” he admitted.

“It’s a fine line because we’ve got to respect the fact we’re playing for Australia and it’s a series against India which is always really big.

“But there’s also the human side of it, the boys have just won a World Cup and probably deserve to celebrate for a while and get home to their families.

“It’s an interesting one. You’d hope there’s not too many of those series put on after big tournaments again.”

Marsh added with a laugh: “I celebrated for the six guys who stayed behind, I celebrated for them.”

Steve Smith, Adam Zampa, Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, Josh Inglis and Sean Abbott have since flown home, with Australia trailing 2-1 midway through the T20I series.

What do you guys think?

While the recently concluded T20I series between India and Australia lacked some star power with a host of first-choice players missing from both sides, many fringe performers put their hand up to make the cut for next year's ICC Men's T20 World Cup with some strong efforts.
We look at five players that boosted their chances of appearing for their country at the 2024 showpiece.

1. Ravi Bishnoi (India)

The young right-armer continues to impress at international level and was the clear standout for India during the five matches as he deservedly claimed the Player of the Series award.
Bishnoi picked up a total of nine wickets from the five games - three more scalps than any other player - and his economy rate of just 8.20 was the second best of any India bowler.
While Bishnoi is likely to be battling it out with the likes of Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja and Ravi Ashwin for a couple of slow bowling slots at next year's T20 World Cup, the 23-year-old has already shown he is more than capable of holding down the vital role.

2. Jason Behrendorff (Australia)

A key member of Australia's pace attack at the 2019 edition of the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup, Behrendorff put his name in lights yet again with a standout performance in India.
The experienced left-armer claimed six wickets during four appearances in the series, with his best spell coming in the fourth match when he collected 2/32.
But the most impressive contribution Behrendorff made for his side was his miserly economy rate, with the 33-year-old giving up just 6.68 runs per over - easily the best for all of Australia's bowlers - in a series that was dominated by the batters.
While Australia have good depth in their bowling attack, Behrendorff could prove a shrewd selection for next year's T20 World Cup if selectors decide to go down that path

3. Rinku Singh (India)

On face value Rinku's 105 runs from four hits during the series doesn't immediately catch the eye, but when you delve that little bit further then the efforts of the hard-hitting left-hander display an important factor that could prove vital for India at next year's T20 World Cup.
Rinku's strike rate of 175 when batting was better than any other India player and his efforts to close out innings by reaching the boundary really stood out during each of his knocks.
The 26-year-old proved the match-winner in the opening game of the series when he kept his cool to deliver when it mattered on the final delivery of the contest, while his 31* from just nine deliveries in the ensuing clash catapulted India to a massive total of 235/4.
There's no doubt India selectors would love to have Rinku's boundary-hitting exploits available in the USA and West Indies next year

4. Tanveer Sangha (Australia)

Despite just nine international appearances to his name, the young Australian spinner is already putting together an excellent resume that shows he is a promising player for the future.
Sangha appeared in all five matches in India, claiming a total of five wickets with his best haul an effort of 2/30 in the fourth game of the series.
Only two of Australia's wicket-takers during the series bowled with a more efficient economy rate and Sangha has enough weapons in his armoury to prove difficult for opposition batters in the USA and West Indies if chosen.
While Sangha is likely to be behind first-choice spinner Adam Zampa in the pecking order for Australia spinners, he looks the logical choice to travel as his back-up.

5. Ruturaj Gaikwad (India)

India are well stocked for top-order batting options in the shortest format of the game and Gaikwad continues to show his wares when given the chance at international level.
The right-hander was India's only century maker during the T20I series as he amassed a superb 123* in the third match of the series and his total of 223 runs was easily the most of any player over all five contests.
Gaikwad also finished inside the top 10 for all run-scorers at last year's edition of the IPL and could easily partner skipper Rohit Sharma at the top of India's batting order at next year's T20 World Cup should selectors opt to go down that path.
