Australia v South Africa | Austrlia win 3rd Test against South Africa by 7 wickets in Adelaide

Bold decision to declare on first day itself. SA would have wanted at least one wicket here.

This is awesome from Faf.. very happy for him

Haven't seen the pitch nor the match, will have to catch the highlights. I'm not sure what to make of the declaration nor am I qualified to give an opinion.
Only time will tell.
Good captain's innings by Faf

‘Motivated’ Du Plessis plays out perfect script

Thursday, 24 November 2016

Standard Bank Proteas Test captain, Faf du Plessis, has described his sixth Test century on the opening day of the third Test against Australia at the Adelaide Oval on Thursday as the ‘best’ of his career, considering the challenges in the build-up to the match. Du Plessis, who overcame a hostile reception from the local crown en-route to his second century at the stadium, says he was motivated to pass a stern test of character by leading from the front.

“I was expecting a little bit of hostility but not to that extent,” he admitted at stumps. “When I came out I was aware of it (the boos) but as the innings went on it disappeared a bit. To be honest when I got to a hundred I wasn’t expecting to still get booed, that was pretty disappointing. I’m proud of today, it was a big day for me to stand up as a captain and make sure I lead from the front. To get through all of that and this week in the manner that I did today makes me proud of today’s performance.

“I was extremely motivated today, that helped me a bit more in the whole innings,” he said. “Every ball I told myself that I wasn’t satisfied, I was driven today to make a big performance. It was great to get the hundred at the end of the day.”

The match is delicately poised following the captain’s brave declaration in the last hour of the evening, and will need another disciplined performance with the ball on day two.

“It’s completely unknown, I don’t even know what to expect,” Du Plessis said of the match situation. “We got 250 but it feels like we got more, but it isn’t a massive score. It will be important tomorrow morning how we go. The statistics of the pink ball say that it’s not generally a five-day game, it speeds up a little bit because there is a lot of action on the ball. So 250 is perhaps a 350 with the red ball, but this is all speculation of where we are in the game.

“I think we are in a good position,” he added. “We were under pressure with losing a lot of wickets and the partnership with Kyle Abbott and myself put us into a decent position.”

Australia will resume on 14 without loss with Matt Renshaw 8* and Usman Khawaja 3* at the crease.

All-rounder, Dwaine Pretorius, has been released from the squad and will travel back to South Africa on Friday.

I am 100% sure that the declaration was due to Warner. There was absolutely no reason to declare at that time with Shamshi hitting blindly - it could have been over very next ball. Also, I am not sure about the strategic declaration for D/N Test, for bowling in suitable condition - SAF lost top 5 for 117 against new ball, when it was supposed to be easiest to bat, while last 2 wickets posted almost 100 at around 4.5 when it was supposed to be most difficult - I understand the new/old ball difference, but then we have to think about Amla, Dumini, Elger, Bavuma vs Shamshi, Vernon, Rabada, Abbott as well; as batsman that is. I actually think it's more about how you bat or bowl (& catch) rather than Day light or pink ball or anything else - AUS openers applied themselves & left almost everything that's missing stick - if they can do that in today's 1st hour, AUS'll take a good lead; otherwise it'll be a repeat of WACA, when Aussies lost 10/85 against 40 overs old Kookaburra.

I was just thinking out of box - I wrote during Hobart Test that, if I were in charge, I won't have played Warner as opener, rather would have slotted him at 5. SAF's last pair was at the wicket for about 30 minutes, which was enough time for Warner to re-enter, which he didn't. Also, you don't send your opener out when the last pair is batting. It happens to be that Faf declared, but last wicket could have gone down any time - can this be a deliberate ploy by AUS to send Warner down the line-up? I haven't seen the match after half-way of post tea session, therefore can't tell exactly what was the reason for Warner to go out & stay for that long - was he carrying injury? It wasn't a nature call for sure!!!!!

I have written at length about Pink Ball declarations.

The idea is to bowl in the FIRST hour after dinner when visibility is poor.

But because the ball was old and ragged, and because the poor economy of Bird had left Starc and Hazlewood overbowled, FAF and Abbott were scoring freely and so he didn't declare.

Problem is, now Warner, Khawaja and Smith get sixty overs in daylight and will bat themselves against a very old, very ragged Pink Ball in that same twilight hour.

And this pitch is dryer than last year.

Very bold decision from Faf.

When I saw Warner didn't open, I thought it was a master-stroke by Smith this time (counter tactic if you like), to save him for when it was easy to bat on. Even an 80 odd coming in lower down the order could be decisive when up against 250 odd, but that wasn't the reason.

SAF is keeping it really tight - they'll have the 2nd ball just after dinner; at this rate AUS will struggle to get a lead.

Absolutely fabulous knock by Khawaja. He has left the ball and defended very well, saw off the tough morning spells as well as last night against the new ball under lights. And his back foot play has been superb, he has pulled anything short very attractively.

Very bold decision from Faf

The bold thing was DELAYING the declaration.

It means that his bowlers are trying to knock over the top order in lovely batting conditions with a pink ball that has deteriorated much more than last year due to the shorter grass.

The game today should be all Australia til the second new ball under lights. But that's still forty overs away - probably 260-4.

If he'd declared at 220-8 he would have probably had them 45-4 overnight.

Costly drop by Amla! Smith`s innings could win the game.

The grass is too short this year. It's gone brown - even though it's cooler than last year - so from Dinner onwardson Day One, the pitch offers nothing to the bowlers.

The only way to get wickets is to bowl at twilight with a new ball. The rest of the time is just about accuracy and slowing the scoring rate til dark.

If Pakistan don't pick Asif they will be roadkill.

The same Asif who was getting bullied by Afghani batsman?

Great century by Khawaja.

Very good batsman in Australia.

Yep.

This ain't T20.

If Misbah messes up his declarations and has to bowl in daylight you need a guy who can bowl 20-12-28-1.

Forget wicket taking with the pink ball in daylight except on Day 1.

The shorter grass means that by day you have to bowl every single ball on the right line and length.

Smith should declare before the new ball is due, bet it would annoy the South Africans to bat in the twilight session. Funky declarations and gimmicky field placings are all that should matter in modern test cricket, at least according to the likes of Michael Clarke and Brendon McCullum. Eventually, players would probably discover that pink ball or not, fundamentally the game remains the same.

Junaids bhai I hope you're seeing the stupidity behind that 'aggressive declaration' right about now !!!

All these funky tactics may come off once in a blue moon but to actually think that such a move might benefit you day in day out ---- Lol hilarious !!

Quite the opposite: these are the conditions they should have bowled in yesterday.

The late declaration has lost SA the match.

So you're advocating they should've declared when then were 150 odd for 7/8 wickets down

It's twice as hard today because the pitch has gone brown.

Nope, at 215-8 in 68 overs.

The extra eight overs made a massive difference: SA have had to bowl at length in daylight AND tonight had to bowl ten overs of spin after Dinner when they would have already reached the second new ball.

In Pink Ball cricket Down Under if you bat first you need to understand that you have a maximum of 66-68 overs to bat, and that the extra runs after that come at the cost of not bowling by twilight.

Hanscombe looking impressive

Top 50 on debut, vicious shot to bring it up.....he made this look ridiculously easy

Abbott is so dang underrated. Top notch in all forms.

No. Those eight overs should have been spent slogging for extra runs and if you get out you get out.

Apart from Day 1, the shorter grass means that the only way to dismiss the top order is at night.

Misbah really needs to understand this. If they aren't going to use greentops, you have a pink ball which doesn't seam, swing or spin in Daylight after the first day.

Faf declared after overhearing the convo between Llong and Warner/Smith wasn't it. Made total sense at the time for mine. Can't fault him.

Hanscombe doesn't seem to come forward much at all in general

not surprised he got like that. His technique really just hanging back in the crease

Neverthless great knock some shots were delectable

So about me,if SA gets any openers yesterday itself then that move would have become the million dollar one

Yeah the gamble didn't pay off but commendable move imo. Hats off. Very impressed with Faf's captaincy. Clearly a natural leader. AB getting injured was probably a blessing in disguise for SA :))

Steyn getting injured hasn't worked out too bad either for SA actually. Rabada and Philander picked up their game almost immediately and Abbott has been brilliant. Best bowler this series for mine.

Philander get off the mark.

Still 11 over to go, Can SA close out this inns tonight?

I have to say I was surprised by Maddinson.

I thought he'd miss a lot, get bogged down and get out caught trying to slog but instead he got bowled.

He missed that by a mile

though that was a good ball to a new batsman

Gilly Convict how is KP's commentary being received in Aus?

I hope he's a permanent fixture, he's a fantastic color commentator IMO.
